Do Magisk and Xposed actually root your phone? Or are they just tools for rooting? - General Questions and Answers

I just got an S22 Ultra, and I'm really missing the Now Playing feature from my Pixel (along with several others, but this is the biggest one). I'd like to try and install the Ambient Music Mod, which looks like it might be the only option for this, but it requires both Magisk and Xposed according to their git. I don't really want to root my new phone. I sometimes have had bad luck with that in the past. Will Magisk and Xposed either root my phone or require root? Or are they just tools that go on the phone so that other tools can be installed?

I start root Android from S2 and I finish to note 9, I have a lot phones different Android and iPhone, but now on s22 I stop root. Why? Because you just lost a lot time for play on root.... and possible happening, when you go shopping and You card it's home... you just can't pay , just because one simple update your phone it's detected rooted. So no time for playing this thing's.

Advice needed: root or not to root?

Hi all.
I'm a long-time Android user. I managed to make my old HTC One M7 running alternately cyanogenmod and Google Play edition last for three years or so, and just switched this week to a lovely new S7 here in the UK.
It looks to be the perfect phone- very fast, nicely designed, lovely camera.
The first thing I did was install CF-autoroot, but I chose not to affect the system partition with the decryption option yet as I didn't know whether this would be strictly necessary yet. Then i installed titanium backup and restored all my apps and app-data from the HTC.
So, here I am a few days in, and I'm considering whether I should de-root it and go back to stock. My battery life isn't great, and by my reading it really should be. I'm getting to need a charger by ~7pm.
Things I want:
1- android pay is excellent- the option to never have to have my wallet with me is really attractive.
2- good battery life
In the past I've been a great fan of having TWRP to do backups, and switching between different ROMS using titanium backup to restore apps. I've always run xposed to tweak things.
Now, my basic understanding here is that xposed and root mean that I can't use android pay. That really does swing it for me.
Unfortunately the battery life is also currently a problem. I'd like to get rid of all the useless samsung bloat as well.
The options appear to me to be:
1. Wipe and go full stock, unrooted.
2. Remove verity and start from scratch with a debloated ROM. Lose android pay.
3. Stay as I am and accept that the battery probably isn't as good as I'd hoped.
4. Unrooted stock and somehow debloat without using root (don't know how to do this without titanium backup 'feeze' option).
Is there an optimum way forward here? I'd appreciate advice.
4. Unrooted stock and somehow debloat without using root (don't know how to do this without titanium backup 'feeze' option). <<< look for Package Disabler Pro in Play Store, I used it to disable (but not delete) lots of bloatware. It does not require's root, it installs as Device Manager so you'll have to authorize it.
So far I'm happy with the battery life I get from my S7, no need to root & try to improve battery life so far as I had to do with all my previous Androids.

You can disable bloat with package disabler pro, from play store. No need to root and list of what safe to freeze is availlable here on lovely xda. Or you can do it manually with app manager.

Play Store and FE:Heroes "incompatibility"

So this is the first time I've witness a problem like this, where I want to download an app (Fire Emblem: Heroes), but the Play Store does not show it on my phone! When I search it on my computer it says it's not compatible with my devices. I figured it was due to root, so I unrooted a device that I soft rooted and it worked. I can now play on that device. However, my main device, my phone, is much more deeply rooted. So, is there a documented issue with apps not appearing on the play store due to root and is there any way to circumvent this? I want to avoid downloading apks from third party websites preferably, but the app itself has root detection on it as well once you DO install it! But basically, I don't want to miss out on a potentially good app because of some silly root check. If I don't see it I may never know about it!
Same problem here. So you are you sure that before the unroot the game wasn't working on your other phone? I never heard of apps not appearing in store due to root, usually you can download the app and then the ban happen as soon as you run it.
I'm on Galaxy S7 rooted android 6 tried on Nougat too but no luck. Also tried on Galaxy S4 and also i saw in the compatibily list also my old Lg G2 is not compatible, both are rooted too. I remember i was able to pre register too so now i'm pretty mad i can't play it since i'm a fan of the series.
Yeah, I'm sure. At first I was super confused. Then I tried using someone else's phone, and it not only showed up, but it showed an advertisement for the game on the front page! As soon as I unrooted my device, the app showed up on the front page of the play store and was searchable as well. Now when I search for the game on my computer it says "Some devices not compatible with this game" and it only shows my rooted phone as not being compatible. I agree with you that this is pretty bizarre. I didn't know Google Play went through that kind of effort detecting root, especially since they have apps that are root only. So the question now is, how do you hide root from Google Play?
How do you unroot your phone? I used the option on supersu to unroot but still the game says is not compatible.
You could try using Magisk to hide root.

I tried Magisk but still no luck.Maybe there are some others remainings files on my phone that are detected or maybe i simply did something wrong i don't know.
I guess that's it, i'm not going to remove my root, really Nintendo surprise even on mobile with their retarded politics, i would have probably spended some money on the game only to support it like i did with other games i liked.
I removed root AND xposed. Maybe if you have xposed it still detects it. My unroot method was just using the superSU removal option. But like I said, my root was pretty light, I just rooted to uninstall a few stock verizon apps. If you have a rom with root embedded in it, you might not be able to unroot without reinstalling a new ROM. I understand Nintendo wanting to block rooted users since rooting is how you get hacks for your paid apps. However, they're isolating a pretty large base of players by doing that and it's probably not a good business decision. They're losing out more on the majority of people that don't risk installing said hacks on their phone. Those kind of hacks don't even break the game either, which makes it even more asinine. It would just be some guy ruining the game for himself by removing the limitation of orbs or experience.
P.S. It is a pretty good game and I'm fully enjoying myself with it. I might recommend getting a cheap $150 tablet to play it if you can't unroot.

Owners! Are you surviving without root?

Hey Sprint Galaxy S8 owners,
I'm looking to upgrade from S6 soon, and wondering how everyone is coping without root?
How did you get your apps (and app data) over to the new phone without Titanium Backup?
It's going good. Can't say I really miss root though. Maybe just YouTube background. As for ads, I use a VPN anyway and there's an option to block ads so that's not an issue. I had to start brand new when it came to app data. No big deal for me. I haven't had root since october, when I got my S7 and no root was available.

That's promising. The things I really use root for are:
Titanium Backup
Unlimited HotSpot (Sprint)
OS Customization Hacks (Status Bar, etc)
And before I upgraded to Android N, I used a ton of Xposed modules.

I still miss Titanium Backup, but am surviving so far without root. A few apps (like uber, lyft and navigation) work better without root (while they do their best to vacuum up my info).
As for unlimited hotspot--- there's a pretty simple workaround which has been posted elsewhere so you can still have it. Only catch is every time you update your profile, you might have to re-do the simple workaround.

Also-- I've found that the $1.99 app BK Disabler (PLUS THE PLUGIN, YOU MUST ALSO INSTALL THE PLUGIN) is definitely worth it. It let's you disable much of the otherwise blocked spam and notification apps and packages.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplysecuresolution.pdplugin
It has a widget functionality so that I can turn off and on a whole group of packages with a single click-- like location-- which I only use when i need it for navigation, but otherwise don't want to be tracked.
Hope this helps some.
Just got the S8. So here we go! My first order of business is trying to get my AppData transferred. Hoping Helium does its thing.
Next, I'm not much of a fan of AI or personal assistants.. I might get used to it, but that Bixby button would make a great back or home button. Actually, I'd be fine with it just being press to go Home and hold for kill app.
Good news, it looks like root has been achieved. Just waiting for the release!
OMG.. Best news of the day!

Tips and Tricks

So just moved from a note 4 to the a71 5g uw for verizon. 2 hours and I hate not having access to magisk or custom roms. Additionally, I want to know what fool at verizon decided to make netflix a system app
Down to the point, before the note 4 got root, they had a thread in regards to what is missed about root and work arounds for it. I would like to start that here. For instance the thread on managing ads with dns rather than adaway (which required root). Mine was the sheer customizability. Root allows so many different changes from just uninstalling system apps (*cough* Netflix *cough*) to changing the operating system.
In regards to uninstalling system apps, the note 4 group had an adb script that was probably pulled from somewhere else, that permanently disabled all the bloatware. Does anyone have anything like that for the A71?

Very well explained, and works pretty good on non root devices.

App that allows root permissions without root?

Hello,
I was browsing around XDA the other day. I stumbled across the name of an app with a GitHub page. I am trying to remember the name of the app and cannot. It said it would allow root apps to function without actually rooting your phone. Does anyone happen to know what it is called?
I have a Pixel 4xl. I can and have rooted it before. However, even though I hid Magisks and excluded a app for a real casino I got banned. They tried to say it was because I was not able to be geolocated. However, the app confirmed with a message stating my phone was rooted.
I would like to be able to run AdAway without having to allow it to work via VPN. I already have a VPN which I use when I am not playing one of my online casinos. There are also a few more root apps I like. I would like to use them without any worry.
Thank you,
Rocky

Pixel 4xl I ended up finding the app. It was Shizuku. I did not get a change to read all about it when I first heard about it. The page I was viewing almost made it sound like a magisk replacement. Then, my phone died and I couldn't remember what it was called.
I wish there was an app or something that will allow this permissions for apps that need them to work better. However, remain undetectable at the same time. That would be great. There are a few root apps I love to install. However, root is not as popular as it once was to me at least.
that app allows running as adb shell, no root access can be provided.
