Has anyone gotten Dex to work? I have tried on two Macs, and a Windows machine. It doesn't launch when I plug in my phone, and if I manually start the app, it doesn't show anything. If I unplug the phone it closes.. I do not have Dex disabled, so, I don't know what's going on? Any suggestions?

start the dex program on pc/tv

plug in the usb or choose wireless
authorise the connection on your phone

Windows 11, working fine.
I've gotten to work on Windows 11 and a Samsung smart TV (both wired and wireless).
You have to make sure Link to Windows is turned off to make it work with Windows.

S2AVDC - Verizon. No it doesn't.
if your device isnt registering in windows for file transfer, it appears that you have a driver/usb issue, try updating samsung drivers, and using a different usb port, if that doesnt work try checking your device manager, plugging and unplugging to see if it updates when you plug it in, we can go from there fo further tests if device manager doesnt update

gernerttl i noticed that u quoted my message to gettinwicked, so this message was in response to that
Make sure you are using a good USB cable. Cheap charging cables do not always have all the pins wired so data transfer will not work.
I have the correct drivers installed on both my Windows VMs. Transfer and ADB work fine. I also have good USB cables. I tried a couple just to be sure. I'm not sure I have the driver for Mac though? I'm having trouble finding it online too. If someone can point me to a place to grab that, that would be great.

For me wirelles Dex for Windows works very well. I just downloaded Dex for Windows and installed it on my computer. Windows 10
I connected my phone and computer to the same Wi-Fi network and that's all I did. I have not installed anything more, except that the option in Advanced features/ Samsung DeX s active.

I had this same issue with my Note 10+. It would only turn on DeX if Link to Windows is turned off.
Which variant are you using? For both my Note 10+ and my S22 Ultra, I am on the Verizon variant.
SP1A.210812.016.S908USQU2AVDC
To be fair. I don't use DeX all that much when using my Dell desktop or Surface Pro 6. When I'm either of them, I prefer Windows Phone Link to DeX. I like the ability to receive and respond to text messages. It takes up less screen real estate, where as DeX takes more space and, for me, doesn't provide anything I can't do on Windows.
I prefer to use DeX on my Tab S7. I have the keyboard cover and I can connect to a monitor using USB-C to HDMI, or wirelessly if it is a smart monitor or TV with Miracast built in. That combination works fine when I am someplace that I don't have my Surface Pro, but need more than just a tablet environment.
my device is in my signature, i dont use dex or phone link either really, i prefer to use teamviewer accross all my devices apart from my 8k tv which i just send and receive via bluetooth using the tizen inbuilt ui

What version of Link to Windows are you on. I'm on: 1.22041.186.0-beta.
I signed up for the beta program. I'm wondering if that is why I can't run DeX with Link to Windows turned on.
Update: I noticed that Link to Windows was just updated and now I am able to start DeX without turning off Link to Windows.
Update to the update: I tried to start DeX on my phone this morning and it said I had to stop Link to Windows. I restarted my PC and before I connected via Phone Link, I started DeX and it started up.
Evidently, you can run both Phone Link and DeX at the same time, but you have to start DeX first then Phone Link. If you shut down DeX then you have to disconnect from Phone Link to restart DeX.

Can you pls describe why you would want to run Phone Link and DEX at the same time. They both are doing almost the same thing but in different ways. I'm a long time DEX user and just tried out Phone Link again after a few years and noticed it is much improved over the old Link to Windows version. I think MS and Samsung got it right with Phone Link and I'm considering just not using DEX anymore. Phone Link connects without any effort (no connecting cables) and I don't need to be concerned about DEX stations or multi-port adapters. Plus, I always hated to have my phone constantly charging while using DEX. It still appears to not work when using a VPN on my phone though.

I don't normally use DeX and Phone Link at the same time. I usually just use Phone Link. If I need to transfer files to or from my phone, I just plug it in and copy then via Windows Explorer.
Normally, when I use DeX, it is on my Tab S7 with the keyboard cover.
My testing was originally to help the OP troubleshoot his problem.

Hey there,
When using MTP to transfer files it takes forever!!!
Using adb push/pull it takes a bit less than forever (It takes quite a while)
Is there any way to transfer files between the PC and the Android device faster (since it doesnt support sdcard)?
Im trying to transfer a 13gb Folder from my OPO to the PC and it just wont end transfering.
Thanks for the attention
Can you elaborate on what you would consider forever? My PC only has USB 2.0 and it still transfers stuff to the phone at around 20MB/sec. 11 minutes for 13GB is not bad.

Unless you have a USB 3.0 port you won't notice any big difference, no matter what method you're using.

Nah, I think that there is something up that's out of the ordinary. Back when I had my 16GB Galaxy S3 and USB 2.0, it still didn't take long to fill that. I even had 64GB sandisk extreme sdxc card with it and that thing was very fast on USB 2.0, and I'm spoiled now that I've used USB 3.0 for so long.
Anyway, it may just be the drivers he used... I can't think of anything else...

I have USB 2.0
Just plugging in and using mtp would take more time
Try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lutey.FTPServer
And then on your computer use a FTP Client and connect to your phone (connected to WiFi of course) and then try transferring the files from there.
The fastest way truthfully is having a WiFi AC card in your laptop, an AC router and ten running airdroid. That way transferring files will transfer at much faster speeds than USB but again, you'll at least need an AC enabled router

Yes there is a faster wy. Just Zip the Folder and Data you want and copy the .zip file
IME the fastest file xfer is via adb push/pull, second is ftp using ES File Explorer's ftp server. MTP sucks balls, doesn't even work properly on Windows.

MTP works perfectly fine on Windows for me.
Transmitted via Bacon
The USB / MTP method takes for ever or fails out-right.
I've switched over to FTP via ES filemanager -> Remote Manager and it's transfering alot quicker / not failing after hanging for a few minutes.
My dad and I both got new Samsung Galaxy S7's (Sprint) over the weekend. Every time he plugs his phone into his computer, it always brings up the prompt "Allow access to device data - An MTP connection will be established to access the data on the connected device."
If he presses "Allow," it does NOT remember and asks him each and every time it is plugged in.
However, when I connected my S7 to my PC for the first time, I only had to press "Allow" once and it never asked me again after that.
It's a minor annoyance for him, but an annoyance nonetheless.
Things we've tried:
Rebooted Phone
Re-installed the official Samsung S7 drivers on his computer (straight from their website)
Enabled developer options on his phone and turning USB debugging on
Tried several different USB cables
Tried several different USB ports on his computer
I am no Android/S7 expert so I thought I would ask here. Is anyone familiar with this issue and know of any fixes? Hell, I'll even take wild shots in the dark at this point. Thanks in advance!
It does the same for me. Guess this is done intentionally by Samsung.

Same here, super annoying.
I was happy that the S7 no longer had port flaps, so it got rid of the stupid message to close the port flaps that was displayed EVERY SINGLE TIME you unplugged the USB cable from it.
But now we have the MTP confirmation without adding known hosts to a whitelist.
Yep same here too I get asked every time. I've just learned to live with it although it is super annoying

That's odd. I just had an S5 plugged into my laptop yesterday to access the internal storage and flash via odin. And I had my S7 plugged in as well for some file transfers. My laptop has had Windows 10 since the first day it was rolled out and downloaded automatically overnight. It has also been connected to the internet and had all updates installed automatically...
I received the message everytime I connect via usb to my pc. Recently I accidentally hit DENY at the prompt and now I can not access the files on my phone any longer. NOPE, I do not get the prompt any longer either to just be able to say allow!! WTH, I've been searching, no luck. Nice tip. At least it works for me in the way that now only ask for permission once. Befere, just two times...last week, 7 or 8 times every time I plugged in!
I think that it was because of the Android Studio Adb driver, but no.
In windows 10, only asked the very first time and never more...in windows 7, as I mention before.

The security for that is the lock screen...no phone contents are shown if the screen is locked, but Android 6 added this another "allow/deny" method that is buggy by now.
Greetings!
You have to unlock the screen before plugging in the USB cable, then he won't ask permission again. They changed this behavior in some of the recent OS updates, because I remember that I could access files without unlocking first (just allow once for that PC). The only real solution for this is root, as always...
On Windows, it works fine. The ALLOW is remembered. But, on Linux, i have this popup EVERY TIME i plug in to PC... so annoying

Has anyone experienced problems connecting the phone and running Dex on a PC.
I installed DeX app on my PC from Samsung website, installed drivers, but cannot make it work. When I connect the phone via USB cable nothing happens with DeX. The PC sees the phone, I can transfer files etc even run Your Phone app on Windows.
Could it be because of USB cable? The included cable is USB-c at both ends, so I am using my old cable from Note 9.
Could you make it work?

Hello, I am having the same issue with Windows 10. Did you have any luck on making Dex work on the PC. I can see that it starts but then the dex windows doesn't open. I can see it in the taskbar but when I click on it (the dex window in the taskbar) nothing happens. Samsung Dex website is no help.
Thank you!
I know this happened a while ago. I had to reinstall windows and all the apps for another unrelated problem. After I did that, once I installed DeX it started working. I do not know what prevented it from working before.
FWIW, I was having this same problem and, unrelatedly, decided I needed to do a full wipe and reinstall of all my apps (a full day's work). As soon as I did that, Dex popped up as soon as I plugged in. So my guess is that some customization, over the course of owning your Note, killed Dex.
When I use dex on my S22U with my Samsung TV it connects and right after diaconnects with this message:

I can make Dex work between my phone and my PC
I can make Dex work between my TV and my tablet.
Why the hell my phone-tv Dex isn't working?
Plus, i remember that I could make it work (not used much, TV is new) and suddenly this started happening.
I tried reseting dex app cache, as well as phone cache and dalvik.
Also tried formating the TV. Didn't tey formating phone because of the trouble it is.
The phone seems to remember the TV. How can i delete Dex data so to start freah again? There is no option in settings.

Try rebooting your phone into recovery mode and clear the cache partition then connect again. If that doesn't work, try turning off your WiFi on your phone; a WiFi network is not needed to use DeX or Smart Mirror.

I already tried clearing cache and dalvik in twrp.
Just tried without wifi on and got the same message.

Try connecting to your TV via Smart Mirror. Based on your OP, it works on your PC and it works on your tablet, but not your TV. It seems to be the TV end, not the phone end. You should be able to clear out the devices your TV. If not, then try factory resetting your TV.
You also try cold rebooting your TV.
How to discharge or cold boot your Samsung TV
When your TV is not working properly, it could be the product of a strange glitch caused by a residual electric charge. This guide will show you how to discharge your TV.

Smart mirror gets the same problem.
The phone-pc works. Phone-tv doesn't .
However tablet-tv works, that is whats weird...
I thought it was a TV issue, but it works with my tablet, so idk what is.
Already tried factory resetting tv, didn't work. Also tried removing from power socket. Gonna try cold reboot with the remote, but I don't expect this to work.
I was asking how to make Dex app from the phone to "forget" the TV, but idk how.

I don't think there is a way to make DeX "forget" the TV. I don't think DeX actually "remembers," nor cares about what it is connecting to. It only cares if the connecting device is compatible with it.
Since you are getting the same issue with Smart Mirror, it still leads me to believe it is the TV end.
Do you have access to a different smart TV? If so, try connecting to that one and see what happens.
If Link to Windows is turned on, turn it off.
Unfortunately, I can't replicate the problem. I have an older 2016 Samsung smart TV and I have no issues connecting with DeX or Smart Mirror. I've also connected to my 5 year old Samsung smart 4K BD player, and 6 year old Sony smart BD player.

I think it's on the TV end as well. But why does it work with my tablet?
I don't have another TV to test, just my PC. I have in total 4 devices with Dex: PC, TV, phone and tablet.
Dex seems to remeber because it says "previously connected" under the TV name.
Is there any way to get a log to see whats causing this issue? Idk how to filter the logcat for this situation.

Ok. I THINK I found out how to clear DeX's settings.
Go to Settings -> Apps
Tap the sort icon to the right of Your Apps.
Toggle Show system apps on and tap ok.
Scroll down until you find:
Samsung DeX
Samsung DeX home
Samsung DeX System UI
From there you can clear cache and data. Caveat to this. You can clear cache and data on Samsung DeX Home, but only clear cache on Samsung DeX and Samsung DeX System UI.
Let me know if that works.
Update: I just cleared cache and data on Samsung DeX Home and cleared the cache on Samsung DeX and Samsung DeX System UI. When I turned on DeX all my devices were cleared. It was just like I turned it on for the first time.

That I don't know. It would be so much easier if you had access to another TV.
This may sound like it's coming from left field. Is Link to Windows turned on? If so, turn it off. Link to Windows has caused me problems. It wouldn't let me turn DeX on at all.

I did a little research last night and found out that VPN can cause problems. I tested it out this morning. Here are my results:
S22 Ultra (WiFi On, VPN Off) -> Samsung TV - Connected no issues
S22 Ultra (WiFi Off, VPN Off) -> Samsung TV - Connected no issues
S22 Ultra (WiFi On, VPN On) -> Samsung TV - Connected, then disconnected. TV gave error
S22 Ultra (WiFi Off, VPN On) -> Samsung TV - Connected, then disconnected. TV gave error
Both errors were too fast to read.

I don't think it is a router setting, but it won't hurt to check. If it was a router setting, then it should have worked with the phone's WiFi turned off. Somthing is not letting the wireless traffic go through properly. It could be an app on the phone or on the TV.
Do you have Developer options enabled? If so, did you make any changes from the default settings? In particular the WiFi settings.
I did find this. But it doesn't seem right. You don't need a WiFi network for DeX to connect to a smart TV or monitor. That I have already stated and shown.

Also tried connecting the TV and phone in same frequency 2.4 GHz amd 5GHz. Didn't work for both.

I can't seem to get my Pixel 7 Pro to communicate via USB to Windows 10 x64 File Explorer. Under no circumstances does Windows File Explorer recognize the Pixel. Have gone through all the driver and change cable steps. My prior LG V35, Samsung Note 10 5G, and older Nexus 6P connect to my computer. Not the new Pixel Pro 7. PTP mode also doesn't work either. Have tried different ports and cables. Do see that Pixel is charging and do hear the PC da-ding when I plug it in via the USB and when I change the drop down mode to file transfer, but the Pixel does not show up in Windows File Explorer, yet I can see the V35, Note 10, and Nexus. Finally, went into settings and permanently set USB mode to file transfer so I didn't have to change it every time I connected the Pixel.
I also loaded, then unistalled, then reinstalled the latest Google ADB Windows drivers and set Pixel USB debugging to on. But no go. Do see that ADB does show up in Windows Device Manager.
Thought this issue was a thing of the distant Nexus 6P past, but, I've run into this again (on a newer different PC, too).l and remember what a pain that was to get to work. Frustrating, as I just wanted to copy some music files from my PC to the Pixel (yes, I know I can use Google One Drive).
It should not be this hard. Anyone run into this? Any ideas?

Yes, thank you. I had found that thread and tried it. Did not work. Can try it again, maybe clean other drivers ahead of the retry (do prefer not to uninstall the LG and Samsung drivers, but maybe they are creating conflicts; however, the Nexus works with the new Google Drivers). I did leave the PC with latest Google drivers installed.
check out the post(URL) on the bottom here...
it had a great idea of doing the little known & thought-of "show hidden devices" option -- it is explained in more detail by him in the post. You might find some of the issue there.
Also, I think there's a better way to make sure you are using a particular driver vs. whatever generic one Windows looks for; I talked about it in below's quote
(make sure you have google's windows usb drivers downloaded & extracted so you know where to find the .inf file to point to and use; OFFICIAL most up-to-date google windows usb drivers can be found HERE )
simplepinoi177 said:
{after right-clicking driver and selecting "update driver" and clicking on "Browse my computer for drivers"...}
....Also, I found more/most success by clicking "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer", clicking "Have disk", and finding the .inf file to get the exact driver than doing the "Browse" and "Next", because that tends to have Windows just keep with the driver that is already applied and kinda only looks to see if the driver version number is less than the version number given in the folder...;

Hi,
What about device manager? Is it recognized?
Good luck,
Sébastien.
Try installing these Google USB Drivers:
8.29 MB file on MEGA
mega.nz
Also, make sure you set your internet connection to private not public because if it's public, sometimes Windows might not download the required drivers.
Go to Settings > Network & Internet > WiFi or Ethernet, then click on the connection and change it to Private then go to Windows updates and perform all the updates including optional ones which might be drivers
Okay, have been working on this for hours.
-Do see all my phones in Device Manager via ADB phone:
(Android ADB Interface and/or Android Composite ADB Interface).
-Correct myself in that neither the Nexus 6P nor the Pixel show up in Windows File Explorer.
-Did remove LG, Samsung, Fastboot entries.
-Did still hear the Winders sound when I change USB modes or turn on ADB.
-Did install the Version 11 Android USB Drivers. Later I updated to V13.
-Did remove then read Windows USB drivers via Android Studio.
-Did go into Device Manager, showed hidden USB and Android and removed grayed out USB entries. Reconnected phone.. ADN entries showed up but moved a bit in Device Manager Categories (LeMobile and Android).
-Keep checking that File Transfer MTP is set. Fiddle with ADB on/off.
-File Explorer still quiet as far as Google Android Phone or Pixel, but, LG and Samsung show up (despite that I uninstalled their drivers - I assume windows added support at some point).
you should have just downloaded the .zip file that had the usb drivers here (https://dl.google.com/android/repository/usb_driver_r13-windows.zip).
At any point did you directly point and an .inf file to load the driver? just because you uninstall drivers doesn't mean that when you reconnect the phone/device, windows will point the the new or correct driver; usually windows keeps a memory or repository of drivers of a specific version to refer to -- so if that driver isn't doing the proper handshaking to your phone/device, no matter how many times you uninstall the driver, windows will keep referring to the same driver that doesn't work when you reconnect. You have to specifically "update driver" and point it to the folder, or better yet specifically the .inf file, to change windows pointing to the correct and/or newer driver.
hope this helps...
-Yes, have tried both methods and keep getting the 'You already have the latest driver installed'.
-Pointed to Android 'USB Drivers' directory.
-I do see 'Pixel 7 Pro Hands-Free HF' in 'Systems Devices' portion of device manager.
-Still nothing in File Explorer.
@tonyo123 Have you tried rebooting both the computer and the Android devices?
To confirm: when you are connected to the computer, do you get an item in your notification shade (it could be silent/at the bottom) that lets you choose USB mode, and you can select MTP mode there? I assume yes due to:

I know this sounds silly and you've probably already tried it, but while connected, try changing to a different USB selection on the phone, and then back to MTP. Does PTP mode work? I'm guessing not, but worth finding out.

Funny enough, I'm having the same issue as of 15 mins ago, after connecting it fine previously.
Not silly. Yes I have been back and forth trying the different USB connectivity modes. One of the first things I did. The pc recognizes the change (I get the USB connect/disconnect sound), but the Pixel doesn't show up in Explorer Only ADB seems to connect properly. Really, I am just trying to enable USB file transfer without having to resort to the slower cloud. Of course with Nexus and Pixel I can't use an SD card to move the files either.
Get VMware Player, install Windows 10 inside of it, and use the Shared Folders function in settings to share your MP3 folder.
Your other option is to try Linux, which tends to handle Android phones quite well out of the box, or reinstall Windows...
EDIT: I just tried it and like every other Android phone I've ever had, I didn't have to install a driver to get it to pop up in Windows after putting it on file transfer mode so something is broken on your Windows installation.

I mean it's certainly possible it's a bug, wouldn't be the first bug that ever affected USB file transfers, it just seems odd to only have two reports with how popular this device is proving to be (I have never before seen a poll show over 60 people having a device on this site within 2 days of its release day before).

you may not be doing the steps/directions I outlined because you wouldn't get the message "You already have the latest driver installed." That was my whole point, that by doing it in such the way that you are doing, you will be getting the driver that Windows merely defaults to, not necessarily the updated, proper, and specific/particular driver that actual Google intends for you to use for this purpose which is a specific/particular mode (i.e. some drivers have different modes like "MTP device", "ADB Device", "ADB Interface", etc). that you have to change & specify & intentionally select than Windows choosing for you.

I'm certain it has to do with the multiple other devices he has installed drivers for. I will also quote the great @roirraW "edor" ehT's guide on the subject on his quintessential guide's Post #2, "Unlocking the Bootloader" section, step 10:
roirraW edor ehT said:

The "updating that driver to Google's driver" is specifically what I'm trying to directly do; not merely letting Windows choose whatever default driver (probably one set up for another device) for itself....
