[Q] Is there a way to transfer files faster? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
When using MTP to transfer files it takes forever!!!
Using adb push/pull it takes a bit less than forever (It takes quite a while)
Is there any way to transfer files between the PC and the Android device faster (since it doesnt support sdcard)?
Im trying to transfer a 13gb Folder from my OPO to the PC and it just wont end transfering.
Thanks for the attention

Can you elaborate on what you would consider forever? My PC only has USB 2.0 and it still transfers stuff to the phone at around 20MB/sec. 11 minutes for 13GB is not bad.

I think that there is something wrong on your end because it doesn't take long for me to fill up my OPO with music, shows, and movies.

I agree. I frequently copy huge amounts of data without any problems.

Unless you have a USB 3.0 port you won't notice any big difference, no matter what method you're using.

Nah, I think that there is something up that's out of the ordinary. Back when I had my 16GB Galaxy S3 and USB 2.0, it still didn't take long to fill that. I even had 64GB sandisk extreme sdxc card with it and that thing was very fast on USB 2.0, and I'm spoiled now that I've used USB 3.0 for so long.
Anyway, it may just be the drivers he used... I can't think of anything else...

You ever tried plugging in the USB cable in the One and the computer, unlock the One (type the pin or swipe to unlock), and simply copy the files over?

It took around 1 hour to get all the files to the point :/

I have USB 2.0
Just plugging in and using mtp would take more time

Try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lutey.FTPServer
And then on your computer use a FTP Client and connect to your phone (connected to WiFi of course) and then try transferring the files from there.

The fastest way truthfully is having a WiFi AC card in your laptop, an AC router and ten running airdroid. That way transferring files will transfer at much faster speeds than USB but again, you'll at least need an AC enabled router

Try going into settings->storage and then press menu key to access "USB computer connection". Check the box for MTP and the phone should show up as a portable device drive.

Got it Fixed

Yes there is a faster wy. Just Zip the Folder and Data you want and copy the .zip file

IME the fastest file xfer is via adb push/pull, second is ftp using ES File Explorer's ftp server. MTP sucks balls, doesn't even work properly on Windows.

MTP works perfectly fine on Windows for me.

The USB / MTP method takes for ever or fails out-right.
I've switched over to FTP via ES filemanager -> Remote Manager and it's transfering alot quicker / not failing after hanging for a few minutes.

[Q] An app to make my phone act like a USB flash drive

I have a galaxy s, running android 2.2, and I was wondering if there is an app I can get which would make my phone emulate a USB flash drive, when the micro USB is plugged into the top.
The reason for this is I have USB input for my car stereo, as well as iPod/iPhone and all that fancy stuff, however that doesn't help for the phone I have. So I would like to be able to somehow 'fool' the head unit into thinking there is just a USB flash drive plugged into the USB input, but instead, it's actually the phone through the micro usb to normal usb cable. The head unit could then play music that is stored on the phone (hopefully by me selecting which directory to use as the emulation)
Is there anything like this around?
Thanks
Denno
I thought every Android device can do that. Just connect device, tap new notification and select enable. I have used G1 with my Samsung TV, so it works well with non-PC devices.
Is there anything special you need to do on the phone or on the tv to get to the location of the media files?

I dont think it comes up with that option unless its connected to a computer. Like when you plug it in to charge it, it doesnt let you mount the sd card.
To OP, if your stereo allows you to plug into the headphone jack, you can use the music player to play the music and it will go to your car that way. I havent seen an app that will fool the phone into thinking its plugged into a computer or similar. Good idea though, I could see where an app like that would be useful.
It's not the phone that I want to trick into thinking it's plugged into a computer, it's the head unit. I want it to think that it's connected directly to a normal USB flash drive.
Unfortunately there is only USB and iPod inputs, no 3.5mm jack. I could hack one together, but I would much rather an app so everything stays neat lol.

I did it with one of my friends phones a while back. Plug into USB on the head unit and android should ask you if you want to 'charge only', 'mount as disk drive' etc. Just choose 'mount as disk drive' and the head unit will have access to all the folders on the SD card.
The folders with music in them are listed on the head unit's screen and you go from there.
Maybe it's less of a phone problem and more of a 'that particular head unit' problem.
Oh cheers chjade84, if that's the case, I might go try that now... Who cares if it's 3.44am :/ haha
I'll be interested to know if you get it working.
No good . I tried both with USB debugging on, and with it off, and both times the head unit said Device Error when I selected USB as the source.. Bugga, not going to be an easy solution lol. Surely there would be a way of making the phone 'behave' like a flash drive when I plug in the micro usb (and subsequently select the app to do the fooling).. I wonder how hard it would be to program something like this myself... Probably too hard lol.
when I say debugging, I mean with the usb connected. I have debugging turned on on my phone, so I get a different screen to that in the video posted above. So I don't mean turning debugging on and off, I simply mean 'connecting usb storage', and not having it connected.. if that makes sense..

Still you don't understand. Android works as normal USB flash drive already. But seems you can't use this mode, because Android does not detect, that it should enable it. cwill0303 is right, you need to somehow force-enable usb mode.
Oh i see, thanks for clearing that up, I didn't know android ran in that way..

You could try "Extended Controls" widget. It has a toggle for as "Mass Storage - enables and disables mass storage" although my EVO gives me the error "Your device does not support direct control of USB".
It's a paid app ($1.09) but it's well worth it for all the options it gives you for toggling stuff from your homescreen.
I don't know if it will help or not.
EDIT: See my next post before buying!
Do you have root? You could try to run this command from a terminal:
Code:
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
I could confirm that it works on my G1 and it enables USB mode permanently - if I unplug phone and plug it back, it will mount automatically. So I think it should work even with device, which isn't recognized as a PC.
Few notes:
I think it requires root permissions.
You will have to disable USB manually. If you won't do that then most probably you won't have access to your SD-installed apps and it may drain battery.
If it will work, you should be able to create some widget or other method to easily enable/disable force-mount.
EDIT:
To disable force-mount run: "echo '' > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file"
Try this app.

It's called Widgetsoid and it lets you toggle USB Storage - Connect/Disconnect SD card to PC.
And it's free!
I actually already had widgetsoid, so I tried with that widget, however it still didn't work. Still tells me 'device error' on the head unit display.
I do have root permissions, but I have no idea how to run terminals or anything, plus I think that's just going to be doing the same as the widgetsoid widget does...
I will have a look into the format type of the card and what the head unit can read...
Ok so I've just checked the file format of my sd card, and it's FAT32, which the head unit should be able to read.. So I'm out of ideas...

You need root to modify /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file file and Widgetsoid doesn't need root for usb mount, so it definitely uses different method to enable it.
You could try to mount sd card from recovery. I know its an option on clockwork not sure about others.

Having just gotten one of the Galaxy S family last week, they approach the USB options slightly differently from other Android devices (Due to Samsung's 'awesome' Kies suite, I believe). Assuming you're using Froyo, go to Settings/Applications/USB Settings and choose Mass Storage. Make sure debugging is disabled. That should trigger the regular Android mass storage interface when you plug in the microUSB cable.
It still might not play nicely though, most of those USB readers in stereos aren't good for reading anything bigger than ~4GB. Also, since the Galaxy S family have internal storage 'and' an SD slot, it'll mount as two mass storage devices instead of one, which may confuse things further.
Best of luck.

[Q] Computer won't recognize my Atrix 2 through USB

So I just got an used Atrix 2 off of eBay today. Seems like it went through factory reset by the previous owner, the phone came with the standard 2.3.6 with MotoBlur and everything, ver. 55.13.25.MB865.
Anyway, as you might've guessed, when I plug it into my computer through USB port, the computer says that it cannot recognize this device. I installed the Motorola device manager app from the website, to no avail. Tried adding MotoCast later, but no result, either. Am I to understand that these two applications also install the drivers for the Atrix 2?
Anyway, I'm dying to root my A2 (I used to be a flash junkie with my old Samsung Captivate :silly, but there's no way to connect it to my laptop..
I'm all ears if anyone have some advice for me Thanks.
No those applications do nothing for your phone, other than advertise for motorola.
Go here: http://www.motorola.com/consumers/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=bda09ec8009a0210VgnVCM1000008806b00aRCRD
These are the drivers for your phone. however, it should recognize it without them also.
What kind of computer do you have?

Hiya. I already had the Device manager in your link in the first place, though, but it still doesn't recognize the phone. I'm using a laptop. Tried it with another laptop as well, but it still shows the "Device not recognized" error. By the way, is there something like a MotorolaDeviceManager.exe kinda program that should run after installing it? Because there is none that I can find.
Oh, and one more detail. Sometimes when I plug the phone into the USB port, the phone acknowledges the port as "Common Charging", just like a wall outlet, instead of a computer.
Do you have usb debugging enabled? And allow unknown sources?
Also, use "charge only" mode usb connection in gingerbread (they removed that option in ics - found out last night trying to system dump my buddy's razr - camera mode worked though, fyi..)

Your computer should recognize the phone with or without the drivers installed though. Weird.

Yup, I've tried with both USB debugging on and off. The same goes with all options in the Application menu.
The thing is, when I plug the phone in, it sees the computer as a "Common charging" aka wall outlet, thus no USB connection menu is available through the notification. I don't have the option to change charge-only or mass storage (which I'm trying to achieve).

i was trying to sync my phone to the pc at work, it would not connect. MTP fail was the error code. i had to disable the USB Debugging in order for it to automatically install the drivers for my phone.
Problem solved (?)
Hi guys. Thanks for trying to help me out. I just solved the problem by the most primitive way..
Plugging, unplugging, and plugging in the phone over and over again. I know how silly it sounds, but it works, around once every 10 times, if I do it successively.
Now my Atrix 2 is happily rooted and loaded with Lithium v 1.3.1.
Thanks
If you keep having problems, you should unplug your phone, uninstall all moto drivers and reboot. Reinstall moto drivers and reboot again. Finally plug in your phone, everything should be newly detected and good to go.
Also, it's always much better to use OEM cables and the most powerful USB ports on the computer. Since it's from eBay then you probably don't have an OEM cable, but just make sure that you're using one that's high quality.
Congrats on getting it working, though!

OPO won't connect to PC in MTP mode.

I don't recall having this problem a few months ago when I tried this the last time so I think it might have been an update that made this happen.
Normally, in the notification bar I get a option to change the connection mode to the pc from "Charge only" to "MTP" or "Camera". However I don't get the notification this time. It will only charge my phone and it doesn't show up in my explorer.
I tried enabling USB debugging but for some reason it is greyed out as seen here:

have you try compare the same cable with different phone, if you had another phone, to make sure if its the cable problem or phone problem.
I do have similar problem with OPO original cable and recently a new remax cable, after sometime the usb connect function is stop working. Tried the same cable with my find 5 and its still not functioning. I do still wondering what caused that, because at first both cables usb function works normally.

yes that's right but then the usb cable can't really be the problem.
I have the same problem on a couple of different ROMs. I used to be able to use PDAnet and connect but now that doesn't even work.
I was finally able to update my ROM using an OTG cable and flash drive. A bit awkward but it works.

But i still wondering why i got two cables that at first every function (charging n data sync) works but then after sometimes only charging function works and i can't no longer used data sync function with the same symptoms as you.

S7 always asks for permission to allow data/MTP when connected to PC

My dad and I both got new Samsung Galaxy S7's (Sprint) over the weekend. Every time he plugs his phone into his computer, it always brings up the prompt "Allow access to device data - An MTP connection will be established to access the data on the connected device."
If he presses "Allow," it does NOT remember and asks him each and every time it is plugged in.
However, when I connected my S7 to my PC for the first time, I only had to press "Allow" once and it never asked me again after that.
It's a minor annoyance for him, but an annoyance nonetheless.
Things we've tried:
Rebooted Phone
Re-installed the official Samsung S7 drivers on his computer (straight from their website)
Enabled developer options on his phone and turning USB debugging on
Tried several different USB cables
Tried several different USB ports on his computer
I am no Android/S7 expert so I thought I would ask here. Is anyone familiar with this issue and know of any fixes? Hell, I'll even take wild shots in the dark at this point. Thanks in advance!
It does the same for me. Guess this is done intentionally by Samsung.

Same here, super annoying.
I was happy that the S7 no longer had port flaps, so it got rid of the stupid message to close the port flaps that was displayed EVERY SINGLE TIME you unplugged the USB cable from it.
But now we have the MTP confirmation without adding known hosts to a whitelist.
Yep same here too I get asked every time. I've just learned to live with it although it is super annoying

I have a problem connecting S7 to Windows 10. "The connected device is unable to access data on this device. Reconnect the USB cable and try again". Actually it doesn't work. It always ask me to install MTP driver (I installed Samsung drivers before), but when I try to do that, it said it is already installed. Recent Windows 10 update made this mess, because on my laptop, I didn't update Windows 10 for a long time, probably since January or so and S7 is connecting without any problem. Grrrr ...

That's odd. I just had an S5 plugged into my laptop yesterday to access the internal storage and flash via odin. And I had my S7 plugged in as well for some file transfers. My laptop has had Windows 10 since the first day it was rolled out and downloaded automatically overnight. It has also been connected to the internet and had all updates installed automatically...
I received the message everytime I connect via usb to my pc. Recently I accidentally hit DENY at the prompt and now I can not access the files on my phone any longer. NOPE, I do not get the prompt any longer either to just be able to say allow!! WTH, I've been searching, no luck. I've found the USB debugging is on and the USB configuration is MTP, any other suggestions. All I did was hit the Deny, you think it would prompt again when I plugged in.
Enable Dev Option and tick usb debugging this worked for me !
I think it serves as a good security feauture
Imagine if you enable it premanently, someone could take your phone and plugin to another pc without unlocking and extract your personal data...

Nice tip. At least it works for me in the way that now only ask for permission once. Befere, just two times...last week, 7 or 8 times every time I plugged in!
I think that it was because of the Android Studio Adb driver, but no.
In windows 10, only asked the very first time and never more...in windows 7, as I mention before.

The security for that is the lock screen...no phone contents are shown if the screen is locked, but Android 6 added this another "allow/deny" method that is buggy by now.
Greetings!
You have to unlock the screen before plugging in the USB cable, then he won't ask permission again. They changed this behavior in some of the recent OS updates, because I remember that I could access files without unlocking first (just allow once for that PC). The only real solution for this is root, as always...
On Windows, it works fine. The ALLOW is remembered. But, on Linux, i have this popup EVERY TIME i plug in to PC... so annoying

Switch off annoying MTP access popup
Finally found it in settings. Switch on Developers options in configuratien. Then there is a USB modus setting. Set it to Charging rather then MTP Transfer.

Question Dex?

Has anyone gotten Dex to work? I have tried on two Macs, and a Windows machine. It doesn't launch when I plug in my phone, and if I manually start the app, it doesn't show anything. If I unplug the phone it closes.. I do not have Dex disabled, so, I don't know what's going on? Any suggestions?

start the dex program on pc/tv
choose where you want it displayed
plug in the usb or choose wireless
authorise the connection on your phone
that should be it
Windows 11, working fine.
I've gotten to work on Windows 11 and a Samsung smart TV (both wired and wireless).
You have to make sure Link to Windows is turned off to make it work with Windows.

S2AVDC - Verizon. No it doesn't.
if your device isnt registering in windows for file transfer, it appears that you have a driver/usb issue, try updating samsung drivers, and using a different usb port, if that doesnt work try checking your device manager, plugging and unplugging to see if it updates when you plug it in, we can go from there fo further tests if device manager doesnt update
edit....
gernerttl i noticed that u quoted my message to gettinwicked, so this message was in response to that

Make sure you are using a good USB cable. Cheap charging cables do not always have all the pins wired so data transfer will not work.
I have the correct drivers installed on both my Windows VMs. Transfer and ADB work fine. I also have good USB cables. I tried a couple just to be sure. I'm not sure I have the driver for Mac though? I'm having trouble finding it online too. If someone can point me to a place to grab that, that would be great.

I can see the phone on my PC when connected via USB. I thought you meant connecting wirelessly.
In both cases it tells me to turn off Link to Windows.

For me wirelles Dex for Windows works very well. I just downloaded Dex for Windows and installed it on my computer. Windows 10
I connected my phone and computer to the same Wi-Fi network and that's all I did. I have not installed anything more, except that the option in Advanced features/ Samsung DeX s active.

I had this same issue with my Note 10+. It would only turn on DeX if Link to Windows is turned off.
Which variant are you using? For both my Note 10+ and my S22 Ultra, I am on the Verizon variant.
SP1A.210812.016.S908USQU2AVDC
To be fair. I don't use DeX all that much when using my Dell desktop or Surface Pro 6. When I'm either of them, I prefer Windows Phone Link to DeX. I like the ability to receive and respond to text messages. It takes up less screen real estate, where as DeX takes more space and, for me, doesn't provide anything I can't do on Windows.
I prefer to use DeX on my Tab S7. I have the keyboard cover and I can connect to a monitor using USB-C to HDMI, or wirelessly if it is a smart monitor or TV with Miracast built in. That combination works fine when I am someplace that I don't have my Surface Pro, but need more than just a tablet environment.
my device is in my signature, i dont use dex or phone link either really, i prefer to use teamviewer accross all my devices apart from my 8k tv which i just send and receive via bluetooth using the tizen inbuilt ui

What version of Link to Windows are you on. I'm on: 1.22041.186.0-beta.
I signed up for the beta program. I'm wondering if that is why I can't run DeX with Link to Windows turned on.
Update: I noticed that Link to Windows was just updated and now I am able to start DeX without turning off Link to Windows.
Update to the update: I tried to start DeX on my phone this morning and it said I had to stop Link to Windows. I restarted my PC and before I connected via Phone Link, I started DeX and it started up.
Evidently, you can run both Phone Link and DeX at the same time, but you have to start DeX first then Phone Link. If you shut down DeX then you have to disconnect from Phone Link to restart DeX.

Can you pls describe why you would want to run Phone Link and DEX at the same time. They both are doing almost the same thing but in different ways. I'm a long time DEX user and just tried out Phone Link again after a few years and noticed it is much improved over the old Link to Windows version. I think MS and Samsung got it right with Phone Link and I'm considering just not using DEX anymore. Phone Link connects without any effort (no connecting cables) and I don't need to be concerned about DEX stations or multi-port adapters. Plus, I always hated to have my phone constantly charging while using DEX. It still appears to not work when using a VPN on my phone though.

I don't normally use DeX and Phone Link at the same time. I usually just use Phone Link. If I need to transfer files to or from my phone, I just plug it in and copy then via Windows Explorer.
Normally, when I use DeX, it is on my Tab S7 with the keyboard cover.
My testing was originally to help the OP troubleshoot his problem.
