Question Flashing with Heimdall instead of Odin? - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Is it possible flashing S22 custom rom with Heidall (https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall) instead of Odin?

I am also looking into using Heimdall, I'm a Linux user too. I currently run Manjaro Linux and the Heimdall front-end looks very similar to Odin. The "easy way" instructions say to choose the flash file and flash it. Problem is Heimdall doesn't see the file when I browse to its location. I can also successfully detect the S22U but I can't find read the PIT file. The handshake process fails.
Currently troubleshooting those issues.

On, mac, we have an issue. I am a Mac and Windows user. I can't use my mac for flashing. I need windows. Why, because Heimdall is "compatible with mac". Unfortunately, everyone has had issues with Mac Heimdall above 10.6 Snow Leopard. this means that Leopard and under, work just fine.(I believe) I have Lion (10.7) which also is incompatible with Heimdall.
Dual boot with Leopard or Linux or Windows for it to work.
This guide is for windows
Thanks for all your help

This guide is outdated now and probably a good example of why you shouldn't hard link to a particular version. The latest version (1.3.0) works fine on all Snow Leopard and Lion versions. The READMEs includes detailed instructions for each platform.

Yes, it's normal.
finish flashing phone in rainbow screen for long time
you need the correct bootloaders. Use the heimdall 1 click collection and find the beta 2d kernel with bootloaders. Flash it through the first page of heimdall. You will be good to go.

How exactly did you try to flash it with Heimdall? In his [KERNEL][UVKJ6][BETA3.1] Subtly Modified Stock with CWM5 + Voodoo Lagfix [1/14/2012] thread he has instructions on how to flash the kernel via Heimdall & the command prompt. I have not tried it with this kernel yet, so I'm not 100% that's what you're looking for.
thanks for the kind concern and sorry for the late reply.my problem is that i installed the drivers in heimdall as given in post and then i put my phone my phone to download mode and then when connected to pc heimdall says no device compatible download mode detected i tried reinstalling the drivers, installing kies, restarting laptop and nothing worked for me please help
I just tried this and it works fine. Win7 64bit
I'll post my steps in a minute.
======================================
Install Heimdall - C:\Test\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32
Unzip “kernel-sms-kj6-v0.2.0-bml”
Copy "zImage" from \kernel-sms-kj6-v0.2.0-bml\kernel_flasher to C:\Test\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32
Put phone in download mode
Install driver “zadig” at “C:\Test\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32\Drivers”
Option list all devices – select Samsung and install driver
Open Command prompt “Run as administrator”
cd C:\Test\heimdall-suite-1.3.1-win32
heimdall flash --kernel zImage --recovery zImage
Phone boots with new kernel
so you say you have to copy the zimage file in heimdall suite folder itself?
when i load the file into heimdall firmware package or pit file i get either "tar header contained invalid file size" or "invalid pit file" error message
and also i am sure i installed drivers for my phone in heimdall as stated in the post
but still heimdall is not detecting my phone it says "failed to detect compatible download mode device"
please help me if you know anything abt this
thanks for the reply
Attached are two jpgs, first is device with Hiemdall driver (libusb) and the second is with Samsung driver in device manager screen. To change driver just un-install the device in device manager and then let computer scan for hardware changes, this will get you back to Samsung driver. You must use Heimdall to install driver for libusb. Hope this helps... Are you trying to use the Heimdall frontend? I'm not using frontend just command mode, try it...
actually i used frontend first i found it not detecting my phone and so i used heimdall cmd no luck there too
i tried uninstalling samsung usb drivers from the system and installed it again
today morning i found a samsung composite usb device option list(which i was not getting it before)
so the changes i made is changed the compatibility to windows xp and tried it worked fine but still its not detecting help me please please
this is what it looks like after i install heimdall driver
when i go to cmd go to heimdall and flash kernel image it says device not detected
From off
I press both up volume and down volume together
then connect the usb cable to my phone ("Warning!!" screen displayed)
then press the up volume to get download mode ("Downloading" screen displayed)
I enter at the command prompt: heimdall detect
the system returns: device detected
If heimdall is connecting ok then open the command window in the same folder you have the zImage in.
then at command prompt type: heimdall flash --kernel zImage (hit enter)
it will flash the zImage and reboot.. Done.

Stop racing and smell the roses. The OP has a problem where heimdall does not see his device. Have you seen this type of error? Read the entire thread, maybe. Thanks for the help and look out for that tree!
i hope changing the os to windows xp will help i installed drivers for heimdall as instructed in the forum i followed every step suggested by some other devs but still no luck i dont know wt to do now
You can wait for them to finish CM7. You can make sure you are using the correct Heimdall Suite for your computer. You can look at Juls guide in the general section for additional help with Heimdall.
i will tell wt i did frm the begining
first i already had samsung galaxy s usb drivers installed in my windows 7 with which i used to odin roms into my phone then
and downloaded heimdall 1.3.2(binaries it says) for windows and i changed compatibility of zadig to windows xp and ran as an administrator
now i put my phone in download mode and connected to pc while on zadig
i found samsung composite usb device in the list i selected that & installed drivers (wtever was selected by default) then i disconnected my phone and restarted once and then put it to download mode again
this time i opened heimdall-frontend and in utilities i clicked detect
it said "failed to detect compatible download mode device"
i copied zimage file from bhundven's kernel to heimdall folder
now if i load heimdall firmware package and select zimage file i get an error saying "tar header contained invalid file size"
if i load flash pit file and select zimage file it says "invalid pit file"
so i tried this command in heimdall cmd
"heimdall flash --kernel zImage"
it said device not detected
i dont know wt to do please get me out of this situation and thanks for taking concern and replying me regularly

If you still have the Samsung USB drivers installed, then I suggest uninstalling them. They don't seem to get along with the Heimdall drivers.
Next, put your phone in download mode & plug it into a USB port on the computer.
Run Zadig again. Try to reinstall the drivers from there if you can.
Run the Heimdall front end. See if it recognizes your phone now. If so, you should be able to open a command prompt and run the command:
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage --recovery zImage
Let us know if it works.
as i stated earlier that i am gonna use windows xp for doing this i shifted to my pc which has windows xp in it.i followed all the instructions and it worked pretty fine in that now i am able to install cm7 but i dont know wt has happened to windows 7 as it dint allow me to properly work with it
anyways thanks to all of you guys for supporting me and for spending your time for me
i defenitely owe you guys thanks a lot

[TOOL] Heimdall 1.4 RC1

Hi everybody!
You might have already seen the flagship Galaxy devices (S, S2, S3) getting support for various new tools. One of these is Heimdall. It is an Open-Source Cross-Platform Flashing Suite originally meant to run on the Galaxy S, but thanks to its popularity, the S2, S3 and other devices also got the support. Literally speaking, it is the Linux and OS X alternative of Odin (It supports Windows as well.). (Read more about Heimdall here.)
Since our device is a variant to the SGS2, the download mode protocol of the two devices are the same. This enables us to use this tool with our device so we don't have to stick with Windows if we want to reflash a stock rom or install a recovery via download mode.
I have compiled the latest version (1.4 RC1) for Linux if you want to try it out. I'm running a 64-bit Ubuntu 12.10. The tool might work on other distributions, but not on 32-bit systems! (There are precompiled 32-bit versions on the website of the author.)
So what do you need to get it running?
Download my precompiled binary (http://www.mediafire.com/?85nny8d1mpea5hp) and extract it somewhere. Then install libusb-1.0 which is a prerequisite of running the tool. Finally, give the Heimdall executable execute rights and make sure you run it as root.
First steps to do for making it sure that the tool works and communicates with your device:
Put your device into download mode by holding down Volume down, Home and Power keys.
Connect your USB cable.
Execute: 'heimdall detect' (This will show if the phone cannot be detected.)
Execute: 'heimdall download-pit --output SGR.pit' (This will download the PIT (Partition Information Table) file of the device.)
Execute: 'heimdall print-pit --file SGR.pit' (This will give you detailed information about the partition structure of the device and this information can be used to identify partitions which you will flash to.)
The three most important information shown by the PIT file are 'Identifier', 'Partition Name' and 'Flash Filename'. For example if you want to flash a recovery image, you will look for 'recovery.img' as 'Flash Filename'. You can find that the corresponding 'Identifier' is '14' and 'Partition Name' is 'SOS' for our device. You can flash your recovery.img with one of the following commands:
Code:
heimdall flash --[COLOR="Red"]SOS[/COLOR] /path/to/recovery.img
Code:
heimdall flash --[COLOR="Red"]14[/COLOR] /path/to/recovery.img
Notice the 'Partition Name' and 'Identifier' values highlighted in red.
This was just an example scenario. You can flash full factory images, repartition the device, change the bootloader, or dump a whole partition. There are many opportunities. If you are interested in using this tool, don't neglect taking time for reading about it first as it can seriously brick your device (Even though APX mode gives an enormous help in recovering the device.). I don't recommend that you use this tool for those not having much experience in what they do. However, this tool can help a lot if you use Linux and don't want to reboot to/use Windows if you want to return to a stock rom.
Every custom modification to devices have risks. Use this at your own risk!
Have fun and enjoy!

It should be. The website says that 1.3.2 has some issues with certain devices, it also recommends 1.3.1.

[Guide] Upgrade to 4.4.2 with Heimdal, keep root and all data.

This thread is for anyone who would like to upgrade to the 4.4.2 using Heimdall and keep all of their data. If you are coming from Cyanogenmod or another non stock ROM you will probably have to wipe (you can try it first just be sure to backup everything). Coming from Cyan to stock didn't work for me, but upgrading from 4.4 stock I was able to keep everything.
This method worked for me without a problem. I am not responsible for your device. If it doesn't work and you followed the instructions post and I'll try to help you out.
Make sure you are using the latest version of Heimdall from the official site. If you are on Linux you should manually download and install since using apt or another package manager may not get you the latest version.
Downloads:
I9505GUEUBML4_FULL_ROOTED.tar.gz
Instructions:
- Backup everything in your recovery just in case.
- Download I9505GUEUBML4_FULL_ROOTED.tar.gz from the link above.
- Extract I9505GUEUBML4_FULL_ROOTED.tar.gz so that you have a folder with the following files
NON-HLOS.bin, modem.bin, system.img.ext4, boot.img
Click to collapse
- Do the following:
Linux/Mac: Open your terminal and navigate to the I9505GUEUBMKG_FULL_ROOTED folder you just extracted.
Windows: Open your command prompt as administrator and navigate to the I9505GUEUBMKG_FULL_ROOTED folder you just extracted.
- Put the phone in download mode and plug it into the computer.
- Run the following command.
Linux/Mac:
sudo heimdall flash --APNHLOS NON-HLOS.bin --MDM modem.bin --SYSTEM system.img.ext4 --BOOT boot.img
Click to collapse
Windows:
heimdall flash --APNHLOS NON-HLOS.bin --MDM modem.bin --SYSTEM system.img.ext4 --BOOT boot.img
Click to collapse
It should take a minute or two to flash. Then it will reboot. First boot can take a couple minutes. If you are having trouble being able to read/write to the SD card head over to this thread and flash the fix.
Before you ask this is only for the I9505G. Flashing these files to any other device will brick it.
Flashing Clockwork Recovery:
You won't need this if you are upgrading from 4.4, but if you need to flash a custom recovery here is a guide for doing it with Heimdall.
- Go to the ClockworkMod site and download the 6.0.4.4 recovery for I9505. Either the standard or touch will work. For the example file names I am using the touch version. If you are flashing the non-touch version the file name will not have "touch" in it.
- Linux/Mac: Open your terminal and navigate to the Download folder or wherever you put the recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.4-jfltexx.img file you just downloaded. Windows: Open your command prompt as administrator and navigate to the download folder or wherever you put the recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.4-jfltexx.img file you just downloaded.
- Put your phone in download mode and connect it to the computer.
- Run the following command: (unless you are flashing the non-touch version then you will need to change the filename to match)
Linux/Mac:
sudo heimdall flash --RECOVERY recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.4-jfltexx.img
Click to collapse
Windows:
heimdall flash --RECOVERY recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.4-jfltexx.img
Click to collapse
- Heimdall will now flash the recovery. It can take a couple of seconds to connect to the phone, flashing the actual recovery should be real quick.
Please let me know if you use this guide, I would like to gauge demand for Heimdall guides. If you have a request for a Heimdall guide let me know.
I can't seem to get the tar.gz file to download completely. Tried two different internet connections and it always stops around halfway.
Has anyone been able to successfully download this file? It keeps timing out and download stops around 20%
OK Tried from my home network and was able to download this file and upgraded using Heimdall (Fedora 18). Many thanks
