Probably an easy question but, External Hard Disks?

Hi All
Finally been able to order a TF700 from Amazon in the UK, I'm off travelling around Europe at the end of next week and intend to take the 700 with me, my question is can I take my external 1TB drive with me and use it as storage (for films, music etc)

Should be doable, although much depends on the power consumption of the drive -- I haven't got a portable model on hand to test it for you. A power-hungry model could either drain the battery too fast to be practical, or it may just be plain impossible to power it from the tablet, causing it to just bork out on you.
Obvisouly, a powered model would cope just fine,but that's not very practical when travelling, isn't it? I have read reports of people using external hard drives on the TF700 before, so I guess it shouldn't pose too much of a problem, though.

assuming you have the keyboard dock too, not only for the USB port but for the extra battery capacity too.
but my WD 750gb works just fine!
I'd suggest MXPlayer 'cause the stock apps suck at decoding divx and other random container formats.

Cool thanks, just ordered a Toshiba Stor.e Alu 1TB (ebay special buy) which is bus powered, should both be here on the 2nd so will plug it into the dock to check.
I am heading down to Spain as I have an apartment there then going to see where the mood takes me, I have 3 months off work (well I say off work, taking the Infinity with an RDP program and my iPhone so I can tether the data) that way I can still work from where ever I am!
The infinity + dock seems the perfect device for me, can carry it easily, brilliant battery life and the full qwerty keyboard.

I plugged a 500GB bus powered USB drive into the dock USB port and it works great!

My 2TB Western Digital MyPassport works just fine. I did format it to get rid of the silly software, though. Don't really notice any powerdrain at all.

I've somewhat accomplished this before with a 2-usb hard drive. The main usb port for transferring I plugged into the infinity, and I plugged the port for power into a portable external battery. It was recognized as another SD card on my infinity. It worked flawlessly when transferring 800MB+ files.

Yup. It works. Mine is WD 1TB, connected via USB of the dock.

I've tried plugging in a standard usb drive (8gb thumb drive) in the usb port before but I can't browse to it in the stock file browser,"external storage"just shows as empty. Do you use a special app for that?

I use a Seagate 2.5" external. It transfers fine and is recognized but playing videos using either mxplayer or bsplayer is imperfect. There is a lot of stutter. My imperfect solution is to rotate out video files on my device.

Not only is an external a great solution, and works perfectly with the dock. It also has a really nice transfer rate. I was getting over 20mb/ps transferring from my 128gb flash drive to the micro sd. I have yet to spring for a 128 sdxc for the dock, but it's on my list.

So far I tried:
- External usb 2.0 disks
- Wireless mouse
- Linksys usb to ethernet
- Usb sticks
The dock's usb port seems to accept anything: even ethernet that allows me to even use my Infinity in the basement of my house (only wired connections there)

Wow good info in this thread. I never even thought to try my external hd with my infinity dock. Will save a ton of time during file transfers.

I'm one of those people that traded in there TF201 for TF700... I know this was asked and answered early on in the TF201 threads, so I guess I just carried over from there and never bothered asking it again.

For those that care I also had success with a USB 3.0 External right away. It comes with a secondary USB to power cable but that has never actually needed to be used. The USB 3.0 is actually an internal from my laptop in a USB 3.0 case (Put a SSD in lappy ). So long story short USB 3.0 devices should also work but at 2.0 speeds.

I did the same thing with my laptop, but shortly there after, I came to realize that I wasn't using it at all in complete favor of my TF201/700.... Now I've got a lappy with a pretty 120 ssd, and not being used. Coincidentally, I have more space than that in my tablet now...

I can test it tomorrow, but I would imagine the storage part of it would work. The issues you would run into is not being able to write to it, not being able to play a regular dvd movie as it would have to be mp4 formatted, and other minor issues that require software support.
We already know gamepads, keyboards, mice, flash drives, sd card readers, and other such work..

Hi there, unfortunately nexus 4 don't have micro SD slot for memory card. I thought about how get to device additional memory. At the market there is nice gadgets like Seagate wi drive and other portable WiFi drive. I had the same problem and here's what I did..
Got a small MP3 player like the Sandisk Sansa Clip+ .. put a 16GB memory card in it and now i'm good to go.
Amazon has it for $30.
SQ will be as good/if not better than your Nexus 4 and you will save on your Phone's battery also.

Would a WI drive work? Not sure how their companoin app works though.

Thanks! i never looked into an OTG cable. Ive always thought it was only meant for video output.

Advent Tegra Note Connectivity Info

Hey everybody,
I bought an Advent Tegra Note a couple of days ago. I always connect my devices to a TV at some point but there wasn't too much infomartion out there about the Tegra Note before I got my hands on it so I just wanted to put some info out there for people who might be interested.
The Note has both micro USB and Micro HDMI ports so I bought a micro HDMI to HDMI cable to test out a few things with it connected to a TV. I've used MHL a lot in the past so I'm not sure whether or not some of what follows is specific to the Tegra Note or applies to any tablet with both HDMI and USB ports.
HDMI to TV:
When you plug the HDMI cable into the Note it automatically kicks the display into landscape so you don't need to worry about the orreientation of the tablet itself.
Sound output seems to be at line-out level. It sounds great if you happen to have your TV plugged into a HiFi, but it does mean you can't alter the volume on the Note itself while it's plugged in.
In my experience, when you plug a phone into a TV via an MHL adapter it seems to really load the hardware which has a negative impact on performance. I don't know if it's because the Tegra 4 inside the Note is so powerful or if it's a feature of having a separate HDMI output, but there's no noticeable slow down at all. By way of example, when I ran Epic Citadel with ultra high settings in benchmark mode, it still achieved 59 fps. Web browsing was flawless too with very smooth performance.
I should probably point out that I was testing this on a 720p TV, not full HD.
USB On-the-Go
With a small OTG adapter plugged into the micro USB port I tried plugging in a wireless keyboard and mouse and it works perfectly (bear in mind if you have a UK QWERTY keyboard some symbols are in the 'wrong' place which is bit stupid for a device being sold in the UK). Next up I tried a bus powered 80GB hard drive and this also worked fine. Finally I tried a mains powered USB hub with the keyboard and hard drive plugged into it and that also works properly too. The tablet appeared to be drawing charge from the USB hub.
Simultaneous HDMI and USB OTG
At first this didn't work at all, but I found if I plugged the USB OTG adapter into the tablet first, then the HDMI cable, everything worked fine. In this setup it really is like a little media pc - it performs very well indeed.
I also tried using a small bluetooth keyboard with trackball mouse with it and that works too. I haven't tried a controller yet. I've read elsewhere that Six Axis Controller won't work with it which is a real shame, but there you go.
Apart from the rather creamy/yellow colour tint to the screen on the Tegra Note, it really is an awesome little device. 35,000 points in Antutu for $200? Awesome!
If you're in the UK and you're frustrated by the lack of UK QWERTY keyboard layout ( no £ symbol etc) you can use the Median External keyboard app from the Play store without root. This will add a UK layout under the hardware keyboard settings area under the 'Language and Input' menu. Hint, you have to connect the keyboard to get the hardware keyboard menu to appear in the input menu.
UPDATE: After the official OTA update to 4.3 I noticed a few things:
It is no longer necessary for users to download the Medion External keyboard app to get access to a UK QWERTY hardware layout. Under the input settings menu there is now an option to select a UK Android PC keyboard layout. On both my bluetooth and wireless desktop keyboards, the internet explorer shortcut key works as the Home button. Regrettably the auto correct options for hadware keyboards still don't work.
Unfortunately bluetooth is even worse than under the original or updated 4.2.2 ROM. When steaming via A2DP there are regular dropouts and reconnecting paired devices such a Moga Pro gamepad repeatedly fails at times. A factory reset didn't help.
When trying to disconnect an external HDD in the Settings/Storage menu, not only does the USB drive get unmounted, the MicroSD card stops working. The capacity and free space and of the MicroSD card will read as zero after the external drive has been disconnected. Restarting the Note (or remounting the SD card) will fix the problem, though for me the Gallery and Google Music apps became corrupted and I had to clear the data in Media Storage, Gallery and Music apps and reboot to get things working again. This bug was not present before.
I've also been playing with an Justop EZCast dongle that I bought from a reseller on Amazon. Results are very mixed. In EZCast mode pictures are streamed to the dongle very well. Videos are really hit and miss. Some stream flawlessly while others stutter to the point of being unwatchable. In EZMirror mode where the whole of the tablet's screen is mirrored on the TV results also vary. Music streaming sounds good but there are often dropouts and 'pops' and 'sqeaks' every so often that are really annoying. Also, altering the volume on the tablet does not change the volume on the dongle (whereas it does if you stream from a Galaxy Tab 3 8.0). Streaming films is also problematic in that there are periodic interruptions that are really annoying. Finally, if you connect to a wireless access point while in EZMirror mode you can mirror your browser etc to the TV which opens up a range of possibilities. You can even mirror writing on the screen to a TV so the Note would make an interesting presentation device in various scenarios. Gaming is not recommended as there is latency of about a quarter of a second. In short, when the dongle works it's great, but for now it is flawed and I wouldn't recommend one. I'm not sure whether future firmware updates will improve the dongle, but I suspect its internal hardware isn't powerful enough, especially for HD content.

I've not noticed a yellow tinge to mine, im pretty impressed especially at currys current 130 quite price!
Was going to get a micro hdmi adapter at some point, I'd like the slide cover, but that seems non existent in the uk

I think maybe it's because I'm used to to Super LCD screens. If you put one beside the Note and look at the gmail and Play icons they look a little creamy and yellow. Next to a 2013 Nexus 7 it looks awful, but now Currys have dropped the price to £99, who cares?
You need an Micro HDMI plug not a Mini HDMI plug as I found out last week. I bought mine from an Amazon reseller for about £2. Asda sell them in store for £6-9 dependent upon brand from memory.
Make sure your headphone jack works properly, mine had an intermittent fault.
If you bought your Note in the last seven days you may be able to get Currys to refund the difference, especially if you ordered online.

I felt the same way but I found a non 0844 contact number and gave it a shot. Allegedly the difference has been refunded onto my card, though I haven't checked yet. The number is 01594 332592 and it answers as Currys Know How. I should add that I paid online and had the Note delivered to store rather than Click and Collect (or whatever it is where you reserve then pay in store).

I have picked a UK Tegra Note up for 99 quid. Really is very quick and have found that enabling 4xMSAA in developer options doesn't degrade performance in gaming.
I picked up a 30 quid miracast box from Curry's. Miracast works okay, image quality is good, but sound can fall out of sync. However with only one WiFi channel you cannot use streaming services. Although you could always set up another android device as a Bluetooth tether connected to WiFi.
Anyone got an Apps to SD solution?

Doh! I didn't realise Currys sold them - I just ordered one online from Amazon. Good point about the lack streaming services.
I only tried 4xMSAA in Modern Combat 3 and I couldn't see much difference in quality. Perhaps I'll try again. I'd love to be able to get rid of the colour banding in certain scenarios (colour crush) as it's very unattractive. Into the Dead is a good example.

USB c hubs, mhls/slimport adapters?

I want to get something to plug my g5 into an HDMI port, but so far I haven't found any conclusive evidence that the g5 supports mhl or slimport adapters. I've also seen some of those hubs for the macbook or chrome pixel, but I can't find any indication those would work either.
Anyone have any on hand that they've verified to work? Ideally I'd like a hub that has a USB 3.0 a port, HDMI port, and another USB c port for charging.

I bought a Cable Matters USB type C male to HDMI female, tried it out, feels like the LG G5 goes at 15 fps or at least lower than 24fps and my minimal testing confirms 2ch (nothing more than that) support, felt a little too disgusted with the quality (mind you, still played 1080p) and lack of overall resolution. I would definitely love to hear others input from other people with different products as well. I'm hoping it isn't like this with everything else.

I'd imagine (read, hope) that would just be a function of a cheap adapter. Due to the fact that the g5 can drive the vr goggles at a decent framrate, I would think 1080p 30hz would be no big deal for it.

Bad news
Well, only bad news. The g5 doesn't even recognize there's an HDMI port there. I'll fiddle with some settings but I have a feeling it's not going to work. The USB 3 port kept mounting/unmounting every few seconds, and when it did stay mounted, I only got transfer speeds of 2MBps. The charging worked though. 1/3 is a bad ratio IMO.
UPDATE!!!!1!1!1ONE!!!
So I'm slightly retarded, I didn't have the input on my stereo receiver set to the input the phone was on. Once I changed the input, it worked like a charm. It's 1080p 24hz and only 2 channel audio, but I think the audio is an Android limitation. Also I guess es file explorer just didn't like my flash drive cuz an actual portable hard drive worked great on the USB 3 port.

Awesome! I would be so down for this, but I have a surround sound setup and 2ch is something I can't get past, unfortunately. Have you tried the stock video app or VLC to stream for the audio?
I have streamed through the Google Cast, but sometimes my files would be too large over my network or the streaming apps like AllCast would only support some audio types, VLC can stream but its just too muffled and not that great over network.

Nah, I was using MX player, I'll try vlc or stock later and report back.

I have been considering that same one. Guess I'll go ahead and get one. Going to try a keyboard and mouse on the USB port. No reason just want to see if it works.

Way ahead of you, im typing this with a wireless logitech keyboard also mouse works great! I'd never actually used a mouse/keyboard with android before and im surprised at how nice it is.
Update: for those curious, it also suports USB hubs. I only tried a 2.0 cuz I don't have e a 3.0 hub. However multiple USB storage devices gave it issues, but I don't see why one would need more than 1 of those at any given time.

Per the developer website the G5 should have display port alternate mode (maybe only 2 channel) on the type C connector. Some of the mono-price adapters should allow you to use this but I haven't tried one yet.

For video out I got the cheapest usb type c to vga adaptor I could find on Amazon (the brand is Techvilla) and it works perfectly.

With that adapter can you charge while playing video?
For football season I normally find a working mobile version & then deal with casting to my TV, but the casting has been less then stable so if I can hard wire it would be awesome. Need to be able to charge simultaneously though to make it through a full day (even a normal non QC is good enough).

I used it last weekend, you can charge it while using it, but the percentage didn't actually go up. It stayed the same over the 2+hours I was watching. It may have just been my power source though (cheap battery bank). As long as you start with a decent charge you should be fine for extended periods.

Probably not as the G5's video out is slimport standard and not MHL. See link below:

I own the similar noname adapter. It works fine, but sometimes it spontaneously disconnects. And i can't guess is it a problem in the phone's firmware or in the adapter itself.
Have you encountered this?

I have the Samsung Multiport Adapter for my Galaxy TabPro S, so I figured I could hook up the G5 to the adapter. The picture shows up on the TV, but I don't hear any sound. Need to try more when I've got more time. I'm also curious if passthrough charging and USB works... that'd be rather cool, though I don't know what I could use it for. Maybe run Kodi...?

USB C to Headphone Adapter is Spotty

My headphone adapter from Google does not consistently work. What's the deal?
I plug it in and usually gives me the notification for different USB options: charge, supply power, transfer files, transfer photos, MIDI
But sound just plays through my speakers or calls come through the ear of the phone.
Any ideas? Is there some secret to it that I'm not getting?

It is the adapter that came with the phone from Google.

Sounds like a defective cable. What I'm unsure of is USB-C was suppose to be a new "standard" but Google changed pins or something preventing other adapters from working. Really piss poor. Just sent back my second after market adapter that did advertise pixel2 compliant. Nope.

What I'm unsure of is USB-C was suppose to be a new "standard" but Google changed pins or something preventing other adapters from working. Really piss poor. Just sent back my second after market adapter that did advertise pixel2 compliant. Nope.

You don't say which after market adapter you got.
Google is using the standard but requires DAC which meets the standard. If you get a cheap adapter, the chances are they don't have the necessary DAC chip in them or a cheap version which doesn't work.

Another solution would be to get a BT to 3mm device which allows you to use BT on your phone to any 3.5mm plug devices. I have been using a several of these for a couple years to hook up my TV and other devices which use the 3.5mm jack to use with my really good BT headphones.

Yes, I can confirm that the HTC adapter works with the Pixel 2. However, aftermarket adapters designed for Motorola phones won't because Moto aren't following the USB-C digital standard there (and they key is "digital", which is why, as the post above says, the adapter needs a DAC in it).

I have the same problem and apparently I am not the only one.
I heard that people got 2 or 3 replacements and the problem persists. It is probably software related.
I will see if with the Moshi splitter I have the same problem.

Has anyone fixed this? I'm on my second pixel 2xl and have 3 Google adaptors that work intermittently

The designed in difficulty Google lovingly put into the Pixel 2 surrounding that oh so special USB-C socket, that lonely and inadequate solitary physical output port, to get music to output through there is ridiculously difficult to next to impossible. To Google's credit they have _tried_ to help when I've called - repeatedly - in the past 6 months but it's just simply not designed to send music out that sole output socket. Which is stupefying trying to grasp how those brilliant Mtn. Viewers could have thought such a design a 'good idea.' All previous versions of android allowed me to 'choose' output to fill-in-the-blank - device speaker, b-t, or the cable/port. With the design push err shove toward b-t headphones or devices that then send your signal to your sound system/speakers they evidently just decided no one would want to send music through the cable. That fact is, as I have indicated, perplexing not to mention maddening. It's also a glaring design flaw. The short of it is it will only work if it's plugged into some device that I guess is factory designed to work with Oreo. Then and only then will the Pixel 'see' that resource as an option to play the signal - and it works automatically. Physically choosing to send your music out that USB-C port & out your cable is not an option, according to Google tech support who I finally called after months of frustration and finally giving up on finding resolution online on my own.

Maybe there's something I'm not understanding, but it's certainly not true that music output only works "if it is plugged into some device that is factory designed to work with Oreo". Mine plays music fine through a HTC adapter that predates Oreo by about a year, or a Dragonfly Red portable USB DAC/amp that predates Oreo by a couple of years and isn't even USB-C. And conversely the Google adapter, which I infer you are having problems with, surely was designed for Oreo since it was released with phones that have never had any earlier version of Android.
Now if you are saying that the OS doesn't allow you to send sound out through the socket when it doesn't identify a device capable of handling it as connected, well OK. But would a previous version of Android allow you to route audio through the USB socket if there was nothing connected to it (or nothing more than an OTG connector)? I never tried that (for obvious reasons) so don't know. But I do know it also didn't allow you to route audio out of the headphone jack unless there was something in that making the correct electrical connections. So it seems to me that the main difference is that this is purely digital audio out, so a digital handshake replaces the electrical connection. But as I say, maybe I'm missing something you are trying to say?

I seriously got fed up with the USB-C to 3.5mm jack playing music out loud in my office is no bueno. I decided to buy a FiiO BTR1, it works while charging so ill just leave it plugged in at work.

Update to 2020 January 7. I just bought a new headphone for my Pixel 2 and it won't recognise it with the dongle I got with the phone. I read it was a problem known by Google in 2017 and a fix would happen on a software update. I've also heard masses saying the cheap dongle won't work and Google saying they would replace it. I've also tried a high quality Apple dongle and it didn't work. I'm on Android 10.
