Hey everybody,
I bought an Advent Tegra Note a couple of days ago. I always connect my devices to a TV at some point but there wasn't too much infomartion out there about the Tegra Note before I got my hands on it so I just wanted to put some info out there for people who might be interested.
The Note has both micro USB and Micro HDMI ports so I bought a micro HDMI to HDMI cable to test out a few things with it connected to a TV. I've used MHL a lot in the past so I'm not sure whether or not some of what follows is specific to the Tegra Note or applies to any tablet with both HDMI and USB ports.
HDMI to TV:
When you plug the HDMI cable into the Note it automatically kicks the display into landscape so you don't need to worry about the orreientation of the tablet itself.
Sound output seems to be at line-out level. It sounds great if you happen to have your TV plugged into a HiFi, but it does mean you can't alter the volume on the Note itself while it's plugged in.
In my experience, when you plug a phone into a TV via an MHL adapter it seems to really load the hardware which has a negative impact on performance. I don't know if it's because the Tegra 4 inside the Note is so powerful or if it's a feature of having a separate HDMI output, but there's no noticeable slow down at all. By way of example, when I ran Epic Citadel with ultra high settings in benchmark mode, it still achieved 59 fps. Web browsing was flawless too with very smooth performance.
I should probably point out that I was testing this on a 720p TV, not full HD.
USB On-the-Go
With a small OTG adapter plugged into the micro USB port I tried plugging in a wireless keyboard and mouse and it works perfectly (bear in mind if you have a UK QWERTY keyboard some symbols are in the 'wrong' place which is bit stupid for a device being sold in the UK). Next up I tried a bus powered 80GB hard drive and this also worked fine. Finally I tried a mains powered USB hub with the keyboard and hard drive plugged into it and that also works properly too. The tablet appeared to be drawing charge from the USB hub.
Simultaneous HDMI and USB OTG
At first this didn't work at all, but I found if I plugged the USB OTG adapter into the tablet first, then the HDMI cable, everything worked fine. In this setup it really is like a little media pc - it performs very well indeed.
I also tried using a small bluetooth keyboard with trackball mouse with it and that works too. I haven't tried a controller yet. I've read elsewhere that Six Axis Controller won't work with it which is a real shame, but there you go.
Apart from the rather creamy/yellow colour tint to the screen on the Tegra Note, it really is an awesome little device. 35,000 points in Antutu for $200? Awesome!
If you're in the UK and you're frustrated by the lack of UK QWERTY keyboard layout ( no £ symbol etc) you can use the Median External keyboard app from the Play store without root. This will add a UK layout under the hardware keyboard settings area under the 'Language and Input' menu. Hint, you have to connect the keyboard to get the hardware keyboard menu to appear in the input menu.
UPDATE: After the official OTA update to 4.3 I noticed a few things:
It is no longer necessary for users to download the Medion External keyboard app to get access to a UK QWERTY hardware layout. Under the input settings menu there is now an option to select a UK Android PC keyboard layout. On both my bluetooth and wireless desktop keyboards, the internet explorer shortcut key works as the Home button. Regrettably the auto correct options for hadware keyboards still don't work.
Unfortunately bluetooth is even worse than under the original or updated 4.2.2 ROM. When steaming via A2DP there are regular dropouts and reconnecting paired devices such a Moga Pro gamepad repeatedly fails at times. A factory reset didn't help.
When trying to disconnect an external HDD in the Settings/Storage menu, not only does the USB drive get unmounted, the MicroSD card stops working. The capacity and free space and of the MicroSD card will read as zero after the external drive has been disconnected. Restarting the Note (or remounting the SD card) will fix the problem, though for me the Gallery and Google Music apps became corrupted and I had to clear the data in Media Storage, Gallery and Music apps and reboot to get things working again. This bug was not present before.
I've also been playing with an Justop EZCast dongle that I bought from a reseller on Amazon. Results are very mixed. In EZCast mode pictures are streamed to the dongle very well. Videos are really hit and miss. Some stream flawlessly while others stutter to the point of being unwatchable. In EZMirror mode where the whole of the tablet's screen is mirrored on the TV results also vary. Music streaming sounds good but there are often dropouts and 'pops' and 'sqeaks' every so often that are really annoying. Also, altering the volume on the tablet does not change the volume on the dongle (whereas it does if you stream from a Galaxy Tab 3 8.0). Streaming films is also problematic in that there are periodic interruptions that are really annoying. Finally, if you connect to a wireless access point while in EZMirror mode you can mirror your browser etc to the TV which opens up a range of possibilities. You can even mirror writing on the screen to a TV so the Note would make an interesting presentation device in various scenarios. Gaming is not recommended as there is latency of about a quarter of a second. In short, when the dongle works it's great, but for now it is flawed and I wouldn't recommend one. I'm not sure whether future firmware updates will improve the dongle, but I suspect its internal hardware isn't powerful enough, especially for HD content.
I've not noticed a yellow tinge to mine, im pretty impressed especially at currys current 130 quite price!
Was going to get a micro hdmi adapter at some point, I'd like the slide cover, but that seems non existent in the uk

I think maybe it's because I'm used to to Super LCD screens. If you put one beside the Note and look at the gmail and Play icons they look a little creamy and yellow. Next to a 2013 Nexus 7 it looks awful, but now Currys have dropped the price to £99, who cares?
You need an Micro HDMI plug not a Mini HDMI plug as I found out last week. I bought mine from an Amazon reseller for about £2. Asda sell them in store for £6-9 dependent upon brand from memory.
Make sure your headphone jack works properly, mine had an intermittent fault.
If you bought your Note in the last seven days you may be able to get Currys to refund the difference, especially if you ordered online.

I felt the same way but I found a non 0844 contact number and gave it a shot. Allegedly the difference has been refunded onto my card, though I haven't checked yet. The number is 01594 332592 and it answers as Currys Know How. I should add that I paid online and had the Note delivered to store rather than Click and Collect (or whatever it is where you reserve then pay in store).
I have picked a UK Tegra Note up for 99 quid. Really is very quick and have found that enabling 4xMSAA in developer options doesn't degrade performance in gaming.
I picked up a 30 quid miracast box from Curry's. Miracast works okay, image quality is good, but sound can fall out of sync. However with only one WiFi channel you cannot use streaming services. Although you could always set up another android device as a Bluetooth tether connected to WiFi.
Anyone got an Apps to SD solution?

Doh! I didn't realise Currys sold them - I just ordered one online from Amazon. Good point about the lack streaming services.
I only tried 4xMSAA in Modern Combat 3 and I couldn't see much difference in quality. Perhaps I'll try again. I'd love to be able to get rid of the colour banding in certain scenarios (colour crush) as it's very unattractive. Into the Dead is a good example.

they pair and connect and works great,
i run a streaming server from home and take my phone with me everywhere. i like to listen to my music, tv shows, and movies and its awesome streaming them through my phone.
but most of all its about the fact that they hook up to our HDTV's you do need the MHL adapter found one on amazon for 8.99 + shipping =12.89 works great
also found a mini bluetooth keyboard with a dpad on it. cost 49.99 + shipping
i connect my phone to my friends tv anytime i stay at a hotel ect.
are phones work great as a little theater pc. hook it up to a tv. use the mouse and keyboard to operate it and you can do anything with it watch movies in this case the ones at my house on my theater pc i have access to. not everyone will have that but you can still have movies on sd card ect. I even play angry birds on my 42" sitting on the couch with this. love the new Skyrocket and wanted to share. didnt know how many people were aware of the keyboard and mouse being able to connect to our phones and were able to make our phone function with them. just like a pc.

How does the mouse pad work? I'm assuming that a mouse pointer doesn't just pop up or does it just scroll and such.

I picked mine up from eBay last year. Works amazing. I have had it linked to my playbook, MacBook Pro, and all my phones to date. Just wish the trackpad was a bit bigger. Thats the only complaint.
I bought the Mini Rii over a year ago, and maybe I've got a bad one, maybe I'm hard on it, but it didn't last. The quality isn't great, and once the battery starts to die it gets wonky. In the beginning recharging fixed it and or cycling the power switch, but now it takes several key presses to make it wake and respond.
The power cycling wasn't a big deal, and I didn't mind, until the microscopic switch's thumb knob fell off and was lost forever. Now I need a tooth pick or paper clip to cycle the power.
Another thing it does is lose it's mind on the cap lock. Sometimes it will cap lock, without the cap lock light on, and you have to turn cap locks on (light comes on) to get lower case. If that makes any sense.
The touch pad is also less responsive now too.
It didn't cost much, but I still expected it to hold up better than it did. This is just my experience, so take it as you will.
At this point I have a half working PC remote, and great laser pointer for the cat.
Has anyone with a Revolution 3.6.13 rooted Sensation 4G (T-Mobile USA) tried this MHL adapter for $10.20 from monoprice.com and how is the quality? I'm in need of an MHL hookup but not exactly sure which to get.

Tried it on the resound, and would lose internet when connected. I keep meaning to pick up the official 15 pin HTC unit. Costs more, but you get what you pay for. If this is useless, please ignore..

Yeah those are the kinds of glitches I'm hoping to avoid, as having wifi dropout while it's connected would partly defeat the purpose. I found this one also on ebay which has the HDMI cable connected, so it only requires two separate pieces/cables, though I'm not sure if using my own HDMI cable might get better results.
Be careful. For example I'm in need of one too but I don't have HDMI, only DVI.
When using MHL with DVI, you only get a picture on the screen when it updates the screen. It's black the rest of the time unless scrolling, playing a movie, live wallpapers, etc.
So I'm a little SoL.
xhigh, not sure I get the point of your post.. are you saying your tv/monitor only has DVI input? I did mention HDMI specifically in my post, not DVI, so whatever DVI issues there may be aren't an issue.

HTC Sensation / Revolution 3.6.13 via XDA app
So what is a recommended MHL adapter? Or are we really to spend $30+ on the HTC one?
Looking to be able to play videos (x264) over dlna / samba or whatever to hdmi. Preferably outputting sound through the analog jack still for now.
I took a chance on the Monoprice one, and just received it this morning.. I haven't had time to test it extensively yet, but here's my experience so far...
Pros:
I was able to connect to my 1080P hidef tv without any problems.. connected to HDMI-4, plugged the usb into the side of the tv, and was up and running in literally under 60 seconds. No reboot was needed.
Picture quality is not 100% perfect, but it's nearly so... much more than adequate for viewing movies, previewing photos from the camera, etc. Audio quality via HDMI was also extremely good.
I did *not* lose wifi while connected, as some others have reported. Wifi signal remained strong. I was able to connect via SMB and CIFS and stream music and video, though I haven't tested this extensively yet.
Cons:
I'm not sure if this is normal with MHL connectors, but while the adapter was powered via USB on the side of the tv, the 500mA coming out of the tv was not enough to provide a charge.. During the 30 minutes I played with it, there was a gradual discharge of the phone, so it's not able to keep up with the rate of discharge of the phone, though technically it should prolong the battery life since it is providing some power to the phone. (Technically, the USB power connection to the MHL is to power the HDMI signal, so maybe what I observed is perfectly normal). While plugged in via USB, Minimalistic Text showed a status of 'USB Charging' which was to be expected...
Next I tried plugging the power directly into AC and not the television's USB port.. Interestingly enough, Minimalistic Text again showed a status of 'USB Charging' even though it was plugged into mains power, so it must have something to do with the fact that the mini-USB end of the AC charger isn't being plugged directly into the phone, but through the MHL dongle instead. In any case, and also interesting, the phone was again discharging faster than it accepted charge from AC, but it seemed to be a slower discharge than when plugged into the tv's USB port...
So, all in all, given my intended use which for now is mainly going to be for previewing photos, working with some documents via bluetooth keyboard, and playing P90 and Tapout workout videos, I think it's well worth the price.
If anyone can comment on the USB charging and discharge rates on OEM MHL adapters, that would be helpful.. Is it normal that the phone discharges while connected to MHL, even though it's in a charging state? If so, then I'm more than happy with the one I got from monoprice.. If, however, OEM units do actually build charge while connected, then I might consider one down the road if I find I have more elaborate requirements than I do now...
Offtopic, can anyone recommend good affordable bluetooth keyboards for our phones?

Is MHL/HDMI purely a clone of the phone's screen or what? Wondering if there's any apps out there that can have the phone function as a remote / file navigator, and have video output only go through hdmi.
MHL is a clone of the phone's screen, so you can use ES File Explorer to navigate your CIFS shares, touch your video file, select the appropriate viewer, and it will stream and clone to the tv..
I tried it and it works great

The one you can buy from Samsung works. Keep your eyes open for a 50% off coupon.
you can probably get one from Monoprice.com pretty cheap. Just check to see if the microUSB end is a 5pin or 11pin. You may need to get a 5pin to 11pin adapter.
Confirmed a generic mhl adaptor will work with a 5 to 11pin adaptor. With or with out power cable. I keep a power cable on it because it drains more battery while playing
I had one that worked with my Note II and it works just fine with my note IV
So it looks like Samsung didn't mess with it this time.
I read some of the reviews for the Samsung mhl adapter ,lots of complaints about it not charging the phone fast enough and it stop working after a while. Guess I'll have to try it out thanks for the responses .
Do you need the 5 to 11 pin adapter with the Samsung mhl adapter?
I have the Samsung one and it's working great. It charges the phone enough so that the battery doesn't drain while the phone's connected. Don't get me wrong, the percentage may go up, but of course not as fast as if it were charging normally. And it certainly doesn't go down. So all in all, a worthy investment.

I just ordered the MHL 3.0 HDTV Adapter from Samsung's store and I think that may be what you're looking for. Unfortunately, I can't provide any user feedback for it myself because I haven't received it yet. Probably will once I do.
I think the reason why the Samsung MHL adapter has been getting bad reviews, particularly for the Note 4, is because they're using the MHL 2.0 adapter, which supports everything from the Galaxy S5 and older.
The MHL 3.0 adapter supports higher power charging and should be able to support the Note 4's power demands, as well as display out 1440p video, something the MHL 2.0 adapter can't do.
I'll report back on the Samsung MHL 3.0 adapter after I receive it (hopefully Monday, ordered it just this morning).

Also, like previously mentioned, there is a 50% coupon code out there. Apparently you were supposed to receive this when you registered your phone. Have you considered getting a Chromecast? You can mirror you phone to your tv wirelessly. Best thing about it is it only costs $35.00. I've got 3 of em and use them regularly for my Note 4 and other devices I have...highly recommended

yes, you need wifi, but its a really good solution, I love mine, I got 3 as well and they are very good and reliable.

I tried setting up chromecast using fox fi ( I don't have a home isp ) don't think its possible to set up without wifi.looks like a hard wired connection is the way to go.
Anybody use one of those HDTV adapters that have usb, sdcard spot and power area. It looks really cool.
Okay, so I finally got the official Samsung MHL 3.0 but I had to wait til I got back from work to test it out.

Only tried it briefly, and it's exactly what I expected and yet kinda floored with the results after testing several wireless mirroring with my Note 4 lately.
If you need a video out display for gaming, where input lag needs to be non-existent, accept no substitutes, the MHL 3.0 adapter does the job like it's supposed to. I tried playing Secret of Mana with it and it feels just like normal console gaming. I don't have to play mind games with myself to convince myself that it's good because it is. Press left, you move left, right there and then.

EDIT: I wrote the above earlier but I need to change my opinion on that after trying the adapter for a longer period of time. There *IS* STILL lag with the MHL 3 adapter. It's much shorter lag than any wireless solution for sure though... I'm talking in the microseconds BUT it's still noticeable enough to affect your experience. This was evident to me when I was playing Sonic The Hedgehog and depended on precision input to make jumps and avoid spikes and pits. At first I thought I was just playing real bad, but when I was playing while looking at the phone's screen instead of the TV I did just fine. I think it might be a framerate issue when projected to the TV. The gameplay just feels slower, inputs feel heavier. If you have a Game mode on your TV it will definitely help this issue and does lessen the lag, but the lag is still there. That said it's playable unlike with wireless streaming, although it's really compromised gaming. I don't recommend playing this way.
I can also confirm that Samsung's MHL 3.0 adapter *WILL* power up and charge the Note 4 while gaming (and I'm using a Dualshock 4 bluetooth controller too) when used with the stock charger. No charger is included with the adapter. No HDMI cable is included with the adapter either. You'll need to supply both on your own. If your TV has a 1.0A USB port or higher, it will also be able to charge your phone. 0.5A USB ports though (on older TVs) will NOT have enough power to keep up with the Note 4.
I was worried about the width of the adapter's USB connector since I use a case for my Note 4, but I'm happy to report that it will still be able to connect without the need to remove the case. I did have to wedge it in to get a secure connection to the microUSB port but it will fit. For reference, I'm using a Tech21 Classic Mesh case.
If you want to stream video, don't want to worry about dropped signal connections, and do not mind a (what frankly feels ancient now) tethered setup, this adapter will also do the job for you. Just be careful to get the MHL 3.0 adapter and NOT the MHL 2.0 adapter. The 2.0 adapter won't be able to keep up with the Note 4's battery discharge even when it's connected to a power adapter.
Beware though, if you're powering the adapter using the TV's USB port, it will NOT keep up with the Note 4's discharge it is an old tv because it most likely has a 0.5A USB port. If you use the charger included with your phone though you will be fine. It's not fast charging but it will charge your phone.

If you're in the market for just video streaming, like previous users suggested, the Chromecast is a pretty good bet for now. Its specs are getting long in the tooth and there's rumors of a new version coming out in the relatively near future, but it still does an admirable and versatile for cross-platforming between Android and iOS if you own both types of devices. Since the Chromecast is dependent on a wifi connection (it won't work on a wired-only environment) its reliability will vary from user to user. For example, the Chromecast uses only single band wifi- the 2.4 range. I live in an apartment with TONS of wifi connections and the 2.4 is congested enough to take a performance hit. Wifi connections perform way better on 5.0 for me. That's why I experience disconnects sometimes on the Chromecast.
For gaming, the Chromecast does an impressive job when screen mirroring, but that 0.5 to 1 second lag is still noticeable and just not good enough for action gaming. It WILL leave you frustrated if you attempt to try it, and you will play like you totally suck at the game too if it's an action game. For slower games or turn based games, it will just test your patience and tolerance lol...
Chromecast's screen mirroring for gaming still performs better than a miracast connection with a Netgear PTV2000. The lag on the Netgear was just a lot more noticeable... maybe a 1.5 to 2 second lag?
For wireless video streaming, I recommend the Chromecast over standard miracast from a miracast receiver like the PTV2000 because on apps that support Chromecast, you can sling the video over to the Chromecast and still use your phone to do other stuff, and use other apps simultaneously. It may be the closest experience you can get to Apple's AirPlay on an Android device like the Galaxy Note 4. With a standard miracast connection, it's strictly screen mirroring. You can't multitask. If you close the video player on the phone, it closes on the wireless display/TV.
If you have a reliable local wifi connection and just mainly do video streaming not gaming, I recommend a Chromecast over the MHL 3.0 adapter solution. Going wireless is just so much better than having your phone tethered to the tv.
But if you are gonna go for the official MHL 3.0 adapter remember to get the 50% discount from Samsung's store. I think that would make it the best going price out there (24.99+ tax&shipping) for the official brand adapter. I don't recommend getting it for the full $50 though. That's overpriced as hell.

I was worried about the width of the adapter's USB connector since I use a case for my Note 4, but I'm happy to report that it will still be able to connect without the need to remove the case. I did have to wedge it in to get a secure connection to the microUSB port but it will fit. For reference, I'm using a Tech21 Classic Mesh case.
With all that said, I can only wholeheartedly recommend the MHL 3.0 adapter for gaming-use only. If you want to stream video, don't want to worry about dropped signal connections, and do not mind a (what frankly feels ancient now) tethered setup, this adapter will also do the job for you. Just be careful to get the MHL 3.0 adapter and NOT the MHL 2.0 adapter. The 2.0 adapter won't be able to keep up with the Note 4's battery discharge even when it's connected to a power adapter.
Beware though, if you're powering the adapter using the TV's USB port, it will NOT keep up with the Note 4's discharge it is an old tv because it most likely has a 0.5A USB port. If you use the charger included with your phone though you will be fine. It's not fast charging but it will charge your phone.

If you're in the market for just video streaming, like previous users suggested, the Chromecast is a pretty good bet for now. Its specs are getting long in the tooth and there's rumors of a new version coming out in the relatively near future, but it still does an admirable and versatile for cross-platforming between Android and iOS if you own both types of devices. Since the Chromecast is dependent on a wifi connection (it won't work on a wired-only environment) its reliability will vary from user to user. For example, the Chromecast uses only single band wifi- the 2.4 range. I live in an apartment with TONS of wifi connections and the 2.4 is congested enough to take a performance hit. Wifi connections perform way better on 5.0 for me. That's why I experience disconnects sometimes on the Chromecast.
For gaming, the Chromecast does an impressive job when screen mirroring, but that 0.5 to 1 second lag is still noticeable and just not good enough for action gaming. It WILL leave you frustrated if you attempt to try it, and you will play like you totally suck at the game too if it's an action game. For slower games or turn based games, it will just test your patience and tolerance lol...

Yeah it can mirror. It's the only type of display out it can do. So your phone and your TV will be playing the same thing at all times. It's probably the most reliable screen mirroring option out there. But ask yourself this: Do you really want a wired solution?
For video streaming I actually prefer the Chromecast. It chokes up every now and then but the freedom of a wireless connection is so much better.

I can see where the MHL 3 adapter has its uses.
If you need a portable HDMI adapter solution for on-the-go presentations or video-out to an HDMI display, it's for you. It's more reliable than a Chromecast/Roku Stick/Fire Stick because it doesn't need wifi to work. You'll just need to supply the HDMI cable. It can also run on the phone's battery without a USB wall charger and display-out for as long as your Note 4's battery can hold.
I DON'T recommend the adapter for gaming though. It's a shame. It's so close but it just comes up short to fulfilling expectations.
In the end, for me, I DON'T think the MHL 3 adapter is worth it. Its original price is expensive and my Chromecast can do the same things wirelessly and better, and it's cheaper.
Buy a Genuine Samsung one. No doubt, that works 99% of the time.
Can confirm, just registered my phone even though I purchased it on 11/17/2014. Immediately recieved my 50% off coupon for an item less thn 50 dollars. I want to get something to plug my g5 into an HDMI port, but so far I haven't found any conclusive evidence that the g5 supports mhl or slimport adapters. I've also seen some of those hubs for the macbook or chrome pixel, but I can't find any indication those would work either.
Anyone have any on hand that they've verified to work? Ideally I'd like a hub that has a USB 3.0 a port, HDMI port, and another USB c port for charging.
I bought a Cable Matters USB type C male to HDMI female, tried it out, feels like the LG G5 goes at 15 fps or at least lower than 24fps and my minimal testing confirms 2ch (nothing more than that) support, felt a little too disgusted with the quality (mind you, still played 1080p) and lack of overall resolution. I would definitely love to hear others input from other people with different products as well. I'm hoping it isn't like this with everything else.

I'd imagine (read, hope) that would just be a function of a cheap adapter. Due to the fact that the g5 can drive the vr goggles at a decent framrate, I would think 1080p 30hz would be no big deal for it.

Bad news
Well, only bad news. The g5 doesn't even recognize there's an HDMI port there. I'll fiddle with some settings but I have a feeling it's not going to work. The USB 3 port kept mounting/unmounting every few seconds, and when it did stay mounted, I only got transfer speeds of 2MBps. The charging worked though. 1/3 is a bad ratio IMO.

So I'm slightly retarded, I didn't have the input on my stereo receiver set to the input the phone was on. Once I changed the input, it worked like a charm. It's 1080p 24hz and only 2 channel audio, but I think the audio is an Android limitation. Also I guess es file explorer just didn't like my flash drive cuz an actual portable hard drive worked great on the USB 3 port.

Awesome! I would be so down for this, but I have a surround sound setup and 2ch is something I can't get past, unfortunately. Have you tried the stock video app or VLC to stream for the audio?
I have streamed through the Google Cast, but sometimes my files would be too large over my network or the streaming apps like AllCast would only support some audio types, VLC can stream but its just too muffled and not that great over network.

Nah, I was using MX player, I'll try vlc or stock later and report back.
I have been considering that same one. Guess I'll go ahead and get one. Going to try a keyboard and mouse on the USB port. No reason just want to see if it works.

Way ahead of you, im typing this with a wireless logitech keyboard also mouse works great! I'd never actually used a mouse/keyboard with android before and im surprised at how nice it is.
Update: for those curious, it also suports USB hubs. I only tried a 2.0 cuz I don't have e a 3.0 hub. However multiple USB storage devices gave it issues, but I don't see why one would need more than 1 of those at any given time.
Per the developer website the G5 should have display port alternate mode (maybe only 2 channel) on the type C connector. Some of the mono-price adapters should allow you to use this but I haven't tried one yet.
For video out I got the cheapest usb type c to vga adaptor I could find on Amazon (the brand is Techvilla) and it works perfectly.

With that adapter can you charge while playing video?
For football season I normally find a working mobile version & then deal with casting to my TV, but the casting has been less then stable so if I can hard wire it would be awesome. Need to be able to charge simultaneously though to make it through a full day (even a normal non QC is good enough).

I used it last weekend, you can charge it while using it, but the percentage didn't actually go up. It stayed the same over the 2+hours I was watching. It may have just been my power source though (cheap battery bank). As long as you start with a decent charge you should be fine for extended periods.

I own the similar noname adapter. It works fine, but sometimes it spontaneously disconnects. And i can't guess is it a problem in the phone's firmware or in the adapter itself.

I have the Samsung Multiport Adapter for my Galaxy TabPro S, so I figured I could hook up the G5 to the adapter. The picture shows up on the TV, but I don't hear any sound. Need to try more when I've got more time. I'm also curious if passthrough charging and USB works... that'd be rather cool, though I don't know what I could use it for. Maybe run Kodi...?

I just bought another Logitech MX570 trackball mouse. My 3rd. I like to go back and forth between traditional mice (MX Performance) and trackball so I don't get carpal tunnel and tendonitis. I'm up in the air about the dedicated keyboard. I will probably get the Logitech K800 as that has been my favorite so far. I would like to try the Craft but too expensive.
I know many of you are just going straight usb-c to HDMI adapter and using Bluetooth accessories. Those are welcome too. It would be really nice if Logitech came out with a sweet sweet keyboard with touchpad built in. There are a couple but the cheap one is just that, cheap and low quality. I bought my mom the K400 and it works fine for her but not for me. Logitech needs to step up their game on a keyboard with touchpad built in.
I am also using Logitech because of the unifying receiver so only USB port is taken for 2 accessories. Have not decided on a USB thumb drive yet.
What setups are you running for productivity with DEX? Please share so there is a thread peeps (that actually use the search function) can come and see what options there are to fit their workflow. Or haven't thought of.
I will update later today see if my USB controllers work for emulators and what the latency is, which I am hoping is just as good as mouse input. I was expecting critical latency that would make the experience bad.

I invested in this dex stuff just as a hobby. I already have 4 pc’s plus a laptop and an iPad Pro 12.9 i carry with me daily.
I passed on it with the note 8 but thought to give it a go the note 9.
I also use the mxperformance mouse for my pcs but i picked up a jelly comb foldable portable wireless keyboard. It has a click-style mouse pad and the keypad is pleasant to use. I also picked up the dex pad , hdmi 2.0b latest spec hdmi cable.
I guess a good way to use this setup will be when I download films to the device. Rather than copy the file over to the pc, i can just connect the dex to the display and have better flexibility.
I found the jelly comb folding keyboard to be crap. Double characters everywhere. Moved to a generic wireless mouse on one of the USB ports and an MS folding BT keyboard. It's replaced my work laptop for 80% of tasks. Oh and powering the HDMI adapter by a Nintendo switch USB C power supply as it kicks out 2.6A which is enough to charge the phone at the same time.
I probably won't post a pic (if I even remember) until Friday or Saturday. I think I will try using it one day and a USB 3 thumb drive. I think DEX only supports USB 2 though. Another missed opportunity by Samsung to make this an even better pseudo desktop experience. Did Sammy use 3 or 3.1 for their USB C? Having two or even one USB 3 A port would've been sweet for local storage. Between a Logitech unifying receiver and a SanDisk UltraFit USB 3 drive and you're talking one smaller desktop.
Samsung could make some corny commercials pitting it against Intel NUC boxes like their Apple commercials. ???

I'm using my Note9 with Dex running on HP X3 lap dock. Great setup for travel but also when I need to edit things locally on the phone----tasker for example. Everything works on the lap dock including sound. Track pad works but could be better.

Woah, you have a working sound for hp elite? Is there any special way to get it?
I had picked up a DeX dock from Amazon for 60 bucks. I used a logitech anywhere BT mouse and the blue BT keyboard. Mouse and keyboard work great. Resolution looks crappy, seem kinda blurry for a 1080p screen. Still needs work, I was hoping to get the DeX working good enough to use as a htpc streamer for my living room TV. Still fun to play around with tho.

dex output is crystal clear for me. I have used this on an lg 4K 27 inch monitor and my old school plasma Panasonic 3D display from 2011
I have a late spec hdmi 2.0b cable and again the resolution is not blurry at all. Plenty of videos on the web to also show the clarity .
Yes dex works with a regular hdmi spec cable usb c to hdmi. I have also used dex with just a cable (waiting on the pad tho show up)

Can somebody tell me if I will be able to use the Note9 as a normal handset with an incoming call? (While in Dex). Everything I see indicates the acutal Note9 runs independent when docked but I can't find any example of making/receiving a call on one.
I want to use a USB extension cable and just be able to use the phone like normal when connected to Dex. Not sure what happens to the audio if I'm also using external speakers via Dex.

I've received several phone calls when on DeX.. Since I'm working in a personal room, I'm just answering the phone calls using speakerphone.. If you're using external speaker, the audio will be routed there (I once used my UE Boom 2 speaker for answering call)

Apple's Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse 2 work both flawlessly. I only wish my Dex cable was longer, to truly be able to have the TV far from me...

which one did you get for 15 bucks? I got one from ebay for 7 bucks (only the adapter hdmi to usb c) and didn't work at all but maybe is my hdmi cable which is really old
