Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy S9+'s camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Well to be fair I own both phones and they both have their strength and weaknesses. I prefer the google pixel 2 PICTURES right now however once GCAM gets ported to the S9 I think the advantage will 100% go to the galaxy. For now the video on the S9 is much better but if your into auto snapshots the pixel 2 still probably beats out in good lighting. Move to low light and of course the S9 just destroys the pixel 2.

Thats just my personal opinion. Also I believe this will change once gcam gets ported to the S9. Its all subjective and really depends on the situation but Id much prefer the S9 camera over the pixel 2 in 95% of the situations because #1 I care more about video and #2 the daytime shots are very similar and almost not noticable however once you get in low light the S9 really flexes its muscle for sure. The dynamic range on the pixel 2 IN PICTURES during the day definately is slightly better HOWEVER when it comes to video the S9 can pull off some pretty impressive dynamic range if you have the right app or if you edit the footage in post. I dont like how contrasty samsungs video is but luckily you can pull out a ton of detail from the shadows in an editing program if you need to.

After having the Pixel 2 XL and now the S9+, I prefer the camera on the S9+, because Pixel 2 XL processes the pics too much and they look unreal. They are just social network ready, but not natural at all, and it usually oversharps and put a lot of drama to the pictures. They look nice at first sight, but just try to zoom a little in details and you will notice the loss in detail and quality. In low light, Pixel is just noise and grain.
Anyway, I leave here a video I really liked and to say this guy made a great job comparing both cameras:

UHD/60 is amazing.
Compared to my Note 8, well there is no comparison.
I'm talking low light. I can take video in a dark passageway and play it back and see more than my eyes can AND it's not a snowy, grainy mess!

Seriously You can see MORE with S9+ than with your naked eyes? Do You use flashlight when looking at dark areas with S9+?

Nope, when I look at video taken in a dark room I can make it more details than I can with my own eyes.
My eyes are good in the dark, all I need is a single 3 lumen night light to walk around in a 400 ft^2 room. Just as a security camera night (IR) mode can reveal details, it's far inferior to a brightly lit room. Our eyes work the same way. The image processing is amazing that it can reduce noise reasonably well and preserve color balance. Non of my other devices can do this.

So it's final then, S9+ broke all barriers for smartphone cameras. It's the best in the world. No doubt about it. Iphone X and Pixel 2 can not hold a candle to S9+

Well let's put it this way. I have an iPhone X. I use it for work and Apple dev projects. I like it a lot. It's the best iPhone I've owned. And I preferred it over my Note 8 for video based on the fact that it can do UHD at 60fps. It still has issues with AF hunting though. I have not tested the 9+ to see how it fares in that department. In the dark, however, off come the kids gloves. Video is the best I've seen. I also use Filmic Pro and ProCam on the X to get the best out of the hardware. Tough to beat physics with f 1.5. The processing helps too. SEC does need to work on the glare problems, however. And given such a small lens aperture I suppose reflections are just impossible to avoid (inter element reflections). Take video of a bright light on the ceiling or at a concert with multiple points of bright light, you will see.
As for the Pixel phones, my last Google device was the Nexus 6. Loved the dev on that phone but its time has come and gone. Hated the aesthetics of the Pixel series. The N6 had a great camera but horrible software. I don't care for TW but SEC got it right on the camera software out of the box. Ever since the S6E+. I wish they would move back to a 16MP sensor though. Shooting RAW in pro mode yielded some incredible shots that are hard to get today still.

I bought OP6 few months ago and went back to pixel 2xl. I was gonna go for pixel 3 but not gonna do it because of alot of issues with the device. Anyway im thinking of buying a OP6 (no 6T ) but the only thing hold me back is the camera. So my question is how's the current development with GCAM + OP6? Is is working like on OP3 + Gcam? HDR working + greenish photo issues have been fixed? Highly appreciated your input
Don't know how it worked back with the OP3 but I come from a Moto G4 Plus and GCam was miles better than stock on that phone although it was very slow to take shots.
My experience with Gcam on my OP6 has been really good. I didn't start using Gcam until a couple of weeks ago but I'd say it's pretty solid when it comes to regular photos. Video doesn't work but the stock op app works fine for that. When I compare pictures between stock and gcam the gcam can be a bit too aggressive when it comes to background blurring and zooming in on text on a whiteboard is better on stock though nightcamera is miles better on gcam.
My point being that gcam isn't superior in every single way compared to stock. Don't know if it might be gcam not working the same as on pixel 3 or the stock just being superior in some scenarios.

Let me get this straight.
You bought OP6, then went back to Pixel 2 XL (because the camera wasn't good? Or is it something else) Then you wanted Pixel 3, but it had issues.
So you want OP6 with the power of a Pixel camera by using the Gcam mod apps?
Ok, I think I can advise on this particular scenario, since I have been testing it extensively.
1) When in good lighting conditions, the stock camera of OP6 is almost as good as cameras of other flagship phones (iPhone XS, Galaxy Note 9, Huawei Mate 20 Pro etc.) I have seen multiple reviews of this camera, and during daylight, it's excellent. My own shots with this camera were very good as well.
2) When in dim lighting conditions, the stock camera of OP6 uses an oversharpening algorithm that makes images look grainy/noisy and also makes images lose a lot of fine detail. Gcam does superior noise reduction, and preserves a lot of detail, but the images come out softer than other flagship phones' . I would definitely use Gcam for low light shots.
3) However, a lowly GS9 cam (which I have access to) is still superior to this OP6 camera, in both daylight and low light scenes. There's not a large but definitely noticeable difference in detail and focus at night, and a slight difference during the day.
Conclusion: The Gcam app will not change your camera experience, unless you take a lot of shots of dimly lit scenes. Using the Gcam app will significantly help you bridge the difference between the OP6 camera and other flagship cameras.

Lol. Yeah i went back because of the camera. Once you use a pixel it is hard to find a good camera phone. Yes. I dont wanna go for Pixel 3 due to remaining issues. Here is the thing, only thing i love about Pixel devices are Stock fluid system + superior camera. But i was a oneplus user few years back. Thanks for your long explaination. Sorry, but GS9 camera comparisons are from an actual GS9 phone, which my friend owns.
If your sole issue is camera performance, then don't go back to OP6. It's just not as good as flagship cameras.

totally agree. let's also say that other flagship could cost (in some cases) more than 2 OP6 put together.

I spend most of my free time looking comparisons between phones but we gotta face the fact that there is a CONSISTENT price difference between a MATE 20 PRO or the lastest iPhone and an OP6 (or maybe two, lmao), and still I think that so much money won't giustify the quality difference.

Thank you both. The reason that pixel camera is great beacuse it is just point and shoot. 9 out of 10 it will produce blurr6 free perfect photo without any editing. Most of other cameras won't do that. To be honest im not a photographer or i dont take photos alot ( like used to be). So it is good that i can relay on a camera that will capture that moment without a fail. But if the GCAM port can catch up to that I'll ho back to Oneplus. I know that there is a huge price difference. Thanks though. Really appreciate your help
I have downloaded this on my Netflix App Stranger Things 3 Ep1. I was using Xs Max prior to this. So when watching this episode I realised its too dark even in daylight scene. So I compared it to iPhone 8 Plus & Xs Max at the same scene & there was Night & Day Difference
No Matter whichever mode I selected the scene looked crap on Op7 pro ,Video Enhancer seemed to have no effect whatsoever.
No my question is ,Is That due to Hdr or screen is very much inferior? Or is it just the calibration done wrong by Oneplus.
If I root & flash custom kernel Will I be able to make it better?
Images attached are in full brightness on all the phones without any edits.
Even Lcd is better than Op7 Pro
Vs 8 plus its Nature Mode & Vs Xs Max its Srgb

In general screen is vibrant & sharp but In videos when compared its not as bright as others

Can we tweak this with custom kernel or custom rom like Havoc or Lineage OS
The 7 pro should get brighter then the 8 plus. Compare hdr videos on YouTube.
I noticed the note 9 gets brighter with more clarity in direct sunlight compared to the 7 pro. But the 7 pro istill gets plenty bright and overall I prefer its larger 90hz display. It's possible there could be some variation in displays between units. Only way to test yourself is compare it with another pro.
To me it simply looks like the 7 pro is dimmer, which is normal, and the calibration is different but that mostly depends on how you set it on both. If you're going from an XS Max to a 7 pro DO NOT expect a similar quality screen, apple has way stricter QC and have the best calibrated screens, probably cherry picked as well, it's just a phone that costs nearly twice as much as the other so no surprise. I don't mean the 7 pro is bad, I think it's better than the s10 plus if we leave brightness out of the equation, you just shouldn't expect it to be on par with the more expensive iphones, which are demonstrated to be the best on the market.
For Me Brightness is not an issue, It's just that the screen in the videos seem dull or less vibrant when compared at same brightness levels.It looks like its calibrated in such a way that it suppress colours.
Is it possible to change that with a custom kernel or roms like havoc have their own calibration?

I have the OP 7 Pro and a friend with an iPhone XS Max and his gets brighter but he likes the looks (color) and sharpness better on the 7 Pro. The pro is more true color and you can punch up the saturation more if you like. I think I have my 7 Pro display set on advanced>Display P3 and the slider bar about 55-60% if you used the Cold at 0% and Warm at 100% so it's slightly toward the warm side from the half way mark of the slider. This gives the 7 Pro display a bit more of a richer color.
Forget about the 90hz, the 7 Pro is just full on ridiculously better then any other phone but the one that's 120hz (Asus or ROG phone I think) especially since you can just force 90hz all apps on the fly (JOnePlus Tool app in Play store) and really see very little battery drain differences.
There is a HBM (high brightness) app you can use. Not sure if you need to be rooted or not. No issues here. Screen is beautiful.

It's a netflix HDR problem, even in 4k TVs.
Try a non HDR movie or series.
I was disappointed as well, but seems like it's got nothing to do with OnePlus.

I was watching the same show on Netflix today and I thought it was bad to. It was daylight out, but was very hard to see. Way to dark. I'm rooted so I don't think that matters. Maybe it's just that recording or stream.

Can we tweak with a custom kernel that supports it? I'm not rooted but will root if this is possible
You've probably already tried this but try playing around with the different picture settings (Screen calibration).
Also maybe try toggling the video enhancer option as well.

I think with the alternative kernel is possible only to active the bright mode that push the nits at the max. I think is not possible to modify the contrast ecc... Like the s10+ video mode

As the name of the thread, can someone explain the difference between the two types of Lens group?
8p are only on pro version
7p on normale mi note 10
Reading some info in the web, there s a lot of confusion about this:
some say that 8p can capture more light than 7p, but it is something that I don't think because the sensitivity to light is determined by the sensor itself and by the aperture (f1.7 on both), not by the lenses.
some others say that the images are sharper on the 8p, and it's another thing I don't believe in, unless the quality of the lenses themselves, regardless of their number, is lower on the 7p. And i don t think so
I think instead that this famous extra lens on the pro version has been inserted to correct the strong distortion at the edges of the image that is encountered on the standard version.
below I insert a link (the only comparison I have found) where both models are compared. even the result of the mi note 10 standard is described as sharper!?
but it is difficult to evaluate because none of the photos in this video are enlarged enough to find out if it is true.

Lens element is used mostly for correction, whether its distortion or abberation, it can be color abberation, fringing, and elses,
Some people won't believe it though (i guess most of them were never used and know about how lens elements work and used in all those other lenses in other camera system, named it medium format, 35, dslr, mirorless, etc), and keep saying that it can bring more light. But again, how can you bring more light when you put an extra glass/plastic in front of your sensor, right ? ;b. The correct term is not "more light" but, "better light", since the lens element filter out/correct out flaw from the light. Example would be how "achromatic" or "apochromatic" lens used to minimise the color fringe effect (caused by lens dispersion) - read here if you want to read details : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration
Btw, the light is indeed determined by the lens apperture and the sensitivity of the sensor itself. I have both and the difference is very little, only the pro manages better backlight and in dark areas a little more light

so how, using logic, I thought ... the improvement from 7p to 8p is not on the sharpness, contrast or brightness of the photo, but on the various chromatic imperfections that can be found in the saved shot.
moreover, things that can be easily corrected with lrm, i think.

so do you think that the 8p pro version has more sharpness in the shots against the 7p version? I m quite thinking ti sell mine and buy the pro but i don t understand if the img quality in terms of sharpness exists.

The First thing i see Is a different White balance.
In terms of contrast and sharpness i see the same result, but near the external limits of the image, there s some distorsion and lack of sharpness on the mi note 10 standard. Pro has a Better result: look at the leaves at the left limite of the images! There s a difference.
instead in the rest of the image I see the exact same quality of detail, definition and sharpness.
Am i wrong?

Ok now i have both versions and i can directly compare the difference.
first, I notice a larger area of focus, it seems that this additional lens gives a better direction to the light and to the ability to focus. this is also noticeable when taking a photo at night, in a street with public lighting, and the rings around the light are much more concentrated and less widespread than on the standard version.
there is also a better dynamic range, with more details in the dark areas, especially in the low light shots.
another interesting thing is the software, because it is not the same as the standard version. the differences are minimal, but I notice a different white balance, a higher jpg compression, greater contrast and oversharpening.
the images are less "soft" and more processed by the sw.
different speech in the photos of the interior and on the photos to people, where the pro version works better getting better details and faster and more precise focus.
ultimately, the differences are not in favor of one version rather than the other, but in a different way of interpreting the scene.
0.6 x, macro, 2 x, 5x are the same, while from 10x up there is a better detail because the interpolation of the main sensor intervenes, which thanks to better optics, guarantees better details.
verdict:
Is 8p better than 7p?
yes, but only if you want to take photos at "pedal to the metal" of the search for detail and the final result after post production.
but this is such a small difference that 99% of users will have no real benefits in this upgrade, unless they want more ram and more rom.

Can you post the original file from both on pro mode (108mp and raw format enable) in the same condition? Maybe we can see more clearly when heavy editing their photos (raw file) in the lr ?

Hi, sorry for bringing this so late, but I'm interesting in this phones. It's not clear to me which version above has higher JPEG compression? I assume it's the Mi Note 10 (not Pro)? It wouldn't make much sense the other way around. Also, which one has higher contrast and over-sharpening - Pro or non-Pro?
I know you probably don't remember it now, but it's worth a shot to ask.
So I just got the oneplus 8t and the camera processing is really, really bad. It's way too saturated and worst of all, it just clips all shadow details to black, it's horrible compared to my mi 9 which has the same exact main sensor, without ois as well. BUT, it's very annoying as I really enjoy the phone in regard to other aspects but don't know how to put up with a much worse camera.
I'm pretty sure I'll return it even if it makes me sad, but would like to get the oneplus 9 for 100 euros more instead if the photos aren't so contrasty and saturated. To the people that have taken photos with both, can you say if the photos on the 9 are on the more natural side with a focus on more shadow details instead of insane levels of contrast?

Yeah, have done that a day after I put this thread up, it improves the main camera by a lot, sadly only for pictures, video is still crap on both. Front camera behaves better too but adds a greenish tint to my face in some situations. Glad I don't have to return this phone too, woulve've been my 6th return, at least this one doesn't have issues down to very basic levels like I found on the s21 ultra or the 12 pro max while costing 500 euros less than these.
What's the most stable gcam version? Cos most of them i have tried have some kind of problem.
