If you can get into your recovery(cwm or twrp) you can plug it into usb and mount it as usb storage.

Just fix the bootloop. Sounds like you gave up on it. Can you get into the bootloader? Hold volume down and power. Till the device shuts off. Then redo that method and poof. Hboot. If you can. What hboot version are you on?

Just rooted HTC One S TMOUS using Hasoon 2000's tool. tried CWM backup of rooted stock, then followed instructions for PA 2.52 + gapps. Got stuck on PA boot screen. Won't boot all way up.
Phone will only boot into recovery. adb reboot bootloader goes into recovery. can't get into hboot to restore stock using RUU.

did anyone solve this? I have an unbranded unrooted HTC One S that is also stuck in a bootloop. I was just scanning the WIFI networks from settings and then the phone started looping by itself and only stopped after the battery was empty.
The phone is not modified in any way. I can get into hboot with power-volume down but then what? I don't really feel like doing a factory reset. Is there any other way out? Does the factory reset help?

I made factory reset, then when i configured my Google account i disables the "sync Internet" Option.

Ya seen someone say that not sure if it was you but also some people have found having to many saved hotspots can also send you into a bootloop.
in my case for sure it was the google account cause i did factory reset, and had no saved hotspots and still it happened when i switched the wifi on\off after the factory reset(i mead got into boot-loop and needed a factory reset).
it is a serious bug\problem - i can't believe this can happen because of such a silly configuration.
the OS of HTC is not stabled at all!
If your bootloader is locked, then you dont have too many options re getting information off of your phone. Someone else may be able to post ideas. A factory reset may be your only option..
If you have already unlocked your bootloader, my suggestion would be to flash the latest TWRP Custom Recovery (google it). You can connect to your computer via usb through TWRP and access your sd card to get pictures, videos etc off of it.
Through TWRP you can also have access to adb.exe (ie using adb.exe commands and not just fastboot.exe commands, and thereby access all sorts of adb related commands (backups, linux shell, etc).
In order to actually fix the bootloop, well, usualy I find this is due to issues with the Kernel and custom ROM you are flashing (either one or the other), and so would reflash whatever worked before (ie a previous ROM or previous kernel).
But if this is all happening on a device you have not rooted nor flashed anything custom... Well, then that is a good question!

Ya I'm not saying what you said is wrong or didn't work for you but I do think I could be right about kongo09 and Bond246 issue since it did happen when dealing with wifi and seen a few people say the same thing.
I am in a bootloop. What i did to get the phone start is just press first down volume button then power button (keep holding them until the phone goes oof). Inmediatily when the phone go off, stop pressing anything. ANYTHING, BE FAST, and it will boot normally. I am now tryying to get the stock recovery to avoid this sht.

Did the factory reset make you lose all your data? As in: pictures etc? I have read varying stories regarding this, some say you lose it all, some say you don't.
I have some recordings of interviews on there that I really(!!!) cannot lose. Does anyone know if HTC has the possibility to recover files from a phone in this condition?

If you unlocked the bootloader then you could flash TWRP which will let you mount SD for the PC.

Unfortunately not... Unrooted, stock bootloader and all... I spent all day reading threads on different forums, but so far it seems that there is no other solution to this bootloop problem than just doing a factory reset. But like I said, I have some very important recordings on my phone and before I give up on them I want to make sure I tried everything.
If anyone knows of a way to root and flash a new bootloader without wiping all my data in the process, that would be highly appreciated.
Or if anyone knows whether it is possible to somehow approach the storage (maybe through Linux) while the phone is bootlooping (not normally recognized by computer).
But also: I would very much like to hear from people who have done a factory reset from the stock boot loader: has it wiped just your apps and app data? Or has it wiped your files as well (photos, music, recordings etc)?

Not much you can do then because even unlocking could wipe SD.
Not sure if its possible with a locked bootloader but you may want to try getting into your bootloader then try typing fastboot boot <working kernel file>
Replace the phrase "<working kernel file>" with a stock boot.img that you know works.
As you can see this command is different from fastboot flash boot <working kernel file>.
This may get you out of the bootloop if you had kernel issues, and may allow you to load a kernel temporarily. Not sure if it works on locked bootloaders but it might.
If all you can access is the bootloader and fastboot, then you really have to play around with fastboot commands. See http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Fastboot for the list.

Stock bootloader, same bootloop scenario - factory reset wiped everything including photos, music, other files. Clear storage seems to keep everything except the installed apps and configuration. It's the 4th time I'm doing it unfortunately :

I figured Encrypting my device and doing a factory reset or wipe within TWRP would suffice, but does it? Has anybody achieved a completely clean device and how?

IShredder works for me.. Or just do it oldschool.. Delete and factory reset. Stuff your phone with crap files to overwrite old files and do that as many times as you feel safe and done.. And if you want to experiment with it try to use some recovery software after to see if you got rid of everything

I think that only works for traditional hard drives rather than on flash memory (SSD/NAND) -- It would seem to me encrypting and factory reset/full wipe in TWRP would work better.
Installing stock firmware encrypts the phone, factory reset/full wipe to completely wipe the data including the key that unlocks the data and doing that another time would probably make data inaccessible especially after a time of use.
AFAIK custom roms are usually not encrypted to allow root to be installed.
I could be wrong however... Has anybody got experience using this method?
The phone needs to be encrypted first before performing a factory reset. Factory reset will make it look like all data has been deleted but actually personal info like photos, texts, emails etc will still be stored in memory and just marked as deleted. This means they can be quite easily restored if someone decides to use a data recovery tool on your phone once it's out of your hands. Both data encryption and factory reset can be done easily from the phone's settings. Data encryption is in the Lock Screen and Security section. Reset can also be done remotely from the findmymobile.samsung website

My phone and all my personal data (4 years of photos, videos, and other app data) just got WIPED.
Here's how it happened:
* I was on OS 5.1.5 till yesterday. Had TWRP as my recovery and Magisk as my root method. Everything was hunky dory.
* Oxygen OS 5.1.6 hit my phone today. I downloaded the update and installed it. Before installing - it clearly stated that my phone will be unrooted by the update. I was ok with that, as I would have simply installed Magisk again from TWRP.
* After the reboot, I opened Magisk manager and saw that Magisk wasn't installed.
* So I did a reboot to recovery from the phone's reboot options (advanced reboot was ON in developer options)
* It did not boot to TWRP. Instead, I saw a stock recovery type screen (black background, OnePlus logo).
* There was a single text called "Decrypt" and a terminal type basic keyboard displayed on the screen.
* At this point I knew TWRP is gone and this would definitely be the stock recovery, asking me for my PIN, to decrypt storage.
* I entered my PIN and pressed ok. IMMEDIATELY after that the screen displayed the message - "Wiping" along with "do not turn off your device while this happens" or similar.
* I was shocked to see this, as all I had done was enter my PIN in a stock-looking recovery with the OnePlus logo.
* The phone rebooted, and lo and behold - I see the new installation screen saying "Hello" to me!
ALL MY DATA IS GONE. Without any fault of mine! I simply did an OS update, and boot to recovery!
PLEASE HELP!
So you went 4 years without doing a backup? I think your out of luck.
First, I am pretty sure all your data is gone absent some expensive recovery.
Second, when you took the ota, you went back to stock, which is why twrp and magisk disappeared. This is actually how the system is supposed to work.
I don't know what you did in the stock recovery to cause a wipe. You should have rebooted to bootloader and reinstalled twrp from fastboot.

pretty much. was just migrating data from one phone to the next using titanium backup/restore.
How could 4 years of photos and vids be gone? The phone is only weeks old. Surely you have backed these up to a cloud or even a pc at some stage? If you habe data backup turned on, you should have all your apps ready to reinstall.
You should have booted into bootloader, flashed twrp and magisk after the update. The OTA will always resort any custom recovery to stock.

I just kept migrating it from the previous phones to the next phones. Google photos does have backup of photos and videos. But there was so much more: SMS, call logs, whatsapp photos (the ones which were unlinked due to being moved to SD card earlier), screenshots, voice recordings, telegram images/videos, google authenticator tokens, and many apps whose data doesn't get backed up as part of android/google backup.

You have a rooted device with a custom recovery so how did you install those in the first place and not loose data then? That wipes your phone doing that. It wiped again because it was being unlocked and relocked that always wipes it. Don't claim this is no fault of your own your running a modified device so yes it is your fault don't come on here and play victim it's really annoying

That happened to me too, but I solved it because after I flashed stock and then upgraded to 5.1.6 I installed TWRP in fastboot before booting to recovery.

Surely you have those titanium backup files though still right? Just restore from that, sure you may lose a week or two but it's better than 4 years.

Android is supposed to wipe data only on unlocking the device. Once it's unlocked there's no reason Android should automatically wipe data.
It did not get relocked. It is still unlocked. How did you come to that conclusion?
Also, I root my device ONLY to install TitaniumBackup and Helium. I do not meddle with anything else being root (no ROMs, tweaks, etc.). Is it my fault that Android STILL doesn't have a way to backup everything without having to root your phone and install special backup apps?
How can the OS just wipe the data partition without user consent? With NO message displayed whatsoever. Just ask a password go on "Wiping.. please wait". What the hell.

Yes I could recover some data from the SD card of my previous phone. Not the TB backups though.
I really need a way to (a) image the phone so that I can possibly recover/pay for recovery in the future (b) recover the data from the phone
I did a little reading. Apparently forced encryption is something that Android Oreo comes along with. All the data files are now by default encrypted (at a file level not a partition level). It is apparently encrypted with some randomly generated encryption key decided by Android, and not the PIN you have set to lock the phone. The PIN is just associated with that key. I'm pretty sure that key got deleted as well when the device was wiped (I'm assuming it must have been implemented like that as a security measure). So I have a wiped data partition with encrypted files!

It did have consent when you took the OTA with your modded device and it said decrypt and asked for your password it was about to wipe. Again you modded your phone and didn't keep a back up this is no one's fault but yours
Yeah I always back up my messages, photos, etc.. To a PC before any type of flash or update, I use smsbackup and have it uploaded to Google drive also titanuim backup and move the files to PC and just back ur DCIM folder. Sorry for ur luck but we all learn lessons the hard way, and no u Cannot recover, but if u have ur old phone may still have the texts on them and use oneplus switch to move them over

Got the (important parts) of my data back. It only wiped the "data" partition - which contained internal app data and sms/calls, etc. It did not wipe the "sdcard" partition (also called "internal storage"). Found this out when I was installing TWRP again (before going through the OS welcome process) to create a dd image of my device for possibility of a future recovery. Android file transfer (thanks to TWRP's MTP support) popped up and showed all my files on the sdcard partition. Immediately backed it up.
To all those senior members who're making fun of this, thanks for all the help, really. You guys were really helpful.

I think this is impossible.. First the phone didn't return to me the root message before updating like oneplus 5 and second point, if you enter the pin to decrypt your data in recovery it never do an automatic wipe i'm a bit confused on what you've really done, but for sure you did something wrong because updating system had never wiped anything

Well this is completely possible, I just had the same thing happened to me. It was exactly as OP described it (except it was OOS 5.1.7, and it did not even ask me to input a pin when I rebooted to recovery). Fortunately I had a backup, so it didn't impact me much but still, it is a very weird thing.

Sorry we can't hold your hand and fix all your problems because your not responsible for your own actions of modding your phone and can't take the consequences when they arise. Maybe you should learn how some more things work and what can happen when you do this before you do it and don't backup your device ever
Will the eSim be deleted during flashing or will it be retained and can it be used again after flashing?

If you reset from the phone itself, it is not deleted, as there is an option not to delete it.
But with the option of factory image and flash-all.bat I won't know what will happen with the esim

Neither the flashing of a factory image nor the entry `Wipe data / factory reset` in recovery mode delete the eSim.
It seems that the eSim can only be deleted via the SIM-Manager and with the option to delete it at the factory reset.

so if I download the complete firmware, and from fastboot I do a flash-all.bat with all the files I'm not going to delete the e-sim?
It's good to know.
It's a good thing it doesn't get deleted unless the user asks for it, that is definitely standard behaviour and good practice (you wouldn't want to lose your number just for changing roms or hoing back and forth from beta software, right?)

I ask you again, I know that from the recovery you tell me that it is not deleted, but if you download the full firmware of the Google website and run the flash-all.bat you delete it?
That's what I'd like to know.
Maybe there is to remove some file so that it does not flash it, but I would like to know it

That has been answered already: no it doesn't remove esim. The only way to erase it is by manually erasing the partition where they are stored yourself, or choosing to erase it when you factory reset the phone from the menu in the android settings.

So, what's the partition where eSIMs are located?? If you backup it on TWRP we can safely restore it again right?
Don't know, but you shouldn't need to back it up as long as you don't do unusual stuff
Any way to back the esim up? Always good to have a backup regardless, software is never bulletproof
I suspect there is no easy way to backup the e-sim. It would be the equivalent to copying a sim card - not a good idea.
I installed the Android 11 DP2 and when setting up the phone, I have no eSIM.
Edit: Looks like the eSIM is still there after it failed to work during initial phone setup. I wasn't able to enable it. Not even the physical SIM worked. So this might be more of a warning for anyone with an eSIM, DP2 might not be able to get you mobile network access.
I reverted back to the stable 10 build, and my eSIM is STIL there. So. An eSIM does survive a bootloader unlock.

I just flash a factory image on a Moto E5 play with a sim card inserted in the phone to go back to Android 8, so I could use the Netflix app on the phone!
I was unable to use the phone, because the operator in the factory image was different than the one on my sim card!
So my sim was useless. I could not have the phone to see the sim card in any way.
I had to flash another rom (lineageOS 18.1) to be able to use the phone again.
Now the phone works, but I cannot install the Netflix app, probably because of the unofficial lineageOS 18.1

About two months ago I successfully rooted that phone through Magisk. Now I am facing the told problem. I searched for some problems like mine, but it is not because of updates. I do not remember I have done something dangerous for the system. However, I tried to install this package. When I tried with the Android package installer, I got an error "it could not be installed". Then I tried to do it through this app manager for rooted devices, and it just stayed loading for a while until I just closed it. I entered the custom app manager and I realized that the app was recognized as an installed app, but however, I could not see it in the poco app launcher. I launched the app and it worked fine, but when tried to make f-droid a system app it displayed an error "/ directory could not be remounted as read-write". I left it be and removed that app. Everything fine... But the next morning the phone was asking for the SIM unlocking code. I unlocked both, the SIM and the phone, but after about five minutes it rebooted to MIUI recovery 5.0. If once in recovery mode the phone is inactive for a while, it automatically reboots to system. The rebooting time once unlocked the SIM was decreasing to two minutes. Apparently, it only will reboot if the SIM is unlocked, and the time is five minutes when the phone is cold and it decreases as it is being restarted. The phone it is not too hot when rebooted.
Thank you if you spent your time by reading the text above. Now the question: How can I fix it without losing my data? Regards.
PD: I do not have enough time to make a backup till it is rebooted, at least from system, and safe mode did not solve the issue.
You tried to install an obsolete app for moving apps to system, an app from 2016... no less?! What were you thinking?
Let me be honest and tell you that that move was extremely stupid. Chalk up your mistake to a brain fart, take the loss and try to reflash the firmware without formatting anything prior to doing so. Leave internal storage, dalvik, cache and everything else untouched. You just might make the phone bootable to backup your data, and then do a PROPER flash procedure.

flash the stock firmware with miflashtool and select de option "save_user_data" and done, the firmware will be flashed and your data will stay there

OK, that flash was successful, the root and the custom recovery were lost, but it is still rebooting. Should I flash all?

if you flash all your data will be lost, any way to install custom recovery and save your data from it ?
