Question Review/Comparison (Gear S3) & Mods - Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

I moved from the Gear S3 Classic to the 46mm Classic GW4 a couple of weeks ago so I thought I would share a review. I have modified it a bit to a homage Rolex GMT Master II and have posted some photos. I ran the same look on the Gear S3.
Hardware - Coming from the Gear S3 I am impressed by the overall size and feel of the GW4. That slight reduction in weight and thickness does make it wear a bit more comfortably. Not that the Gear S3 was uncomfortable but the difference is apparent. I initially wasn't a bit fan of the buttons but they have grown on me but I still think the Gear S3 buttons a bit nicer. The slight increase in screen size is good for those of us with old eye sight but not a change I am that bothered about.
Software - A mixed bag here. Overall look and feel is more or less the same which is good. Some bits are better some worse, but I would hope the way it works and looks will improve over time as Tizen did. It runs fine with minimal lag but I can't really say I notice it compared to the Gear S3.
Samsung Pay works much better than the Gear S3. This was always a bit hit and miss for me where it would sometimes take a restart of Pay for it to register with the till. So far it works every time with the GW4.
No issues with notifications and all the apps I use (Timer, Alarm, Flashlight) all work as they did on the Gear S3.
Finally Battery life.....has been okay. Initially it was under two days (Gear S3 was 2.5 to 3 days for me) but it is now giving 2 days 5-6 hours. This is with AOD off, Wrist wake up on, auto screen brightness, HR every 10 minutes, Blood O2 manual, Wifi off, Bluetooth on, NFC off.
So quite happy with the switch over. I also got £115 for my Gear S3 trade in which I got on ebay 3 years ago for £150 so a bonus there.
Mods: Bezel cover is from KSR Watch. They do a Silicon based bezel ring. I managed to get a box of 4 GMT rings from them last month and it looks like they have stopped producing them which is a shame. The one currently on the watch has lost the silicon cover so is just really a vinyl sticker but it does the job.
The watch face is mod of https://www.svartling.net/p/watch-faces.html DeepSea Dweller face with a GMT complication added and change to the name. Check out his Watchmaker faces they are very good quality.

Thanks for this - very helpful, as I am considering the same upgrade. Although I must admit, given that, as you mention, for the most part there aren't dramatic differences and the Gear S3 has significantly better battery life (I reliably get 3+ days) I'm still not convinced that the GW4 is worth the expense. BTW, I have a similar (aluminium) bezel ring by Ringke that I'm very happy with: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07LGTPN9R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thinking of getting a Huawei

Does anyone have a Huawei? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013LKLS2E/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_M6zfwbGFJG3STI'm loving the look of it, but don't know much about how it compares to other aw.
I'm new to the whole idea so any insights or suggestions are appreciated. My fitbit is giving signs of dying and rather than drop money into another one, I started looking for something to work with my s6 edge+ that will do more than just count steps.

Since this section is so quiet I would suggest giving it a shot and purchase it from somewhere with a return policy and see if you like it and will fit your needs. I personally have the LG Urbane and love it... but this looks like a nice watch.

I love the style of this Huawei smart watch.
I haven't got any of this but one of my friend already did. As far his confirmation, he is not so satisfied with its performance. He thinks that this Huawei smart watch is not so innovative.
I like the style of the Huawatch, but it's quite thick, and personally I don't see the extra cost to be worth the style advantage over the LG Urbane. Technically it seems to be pretty much the same.
For me the missing component is ambient light sensor.. So the Moto 360/2015 i's my favourite device, but it's a shame they can't figure out how to fit an ambient light sensor into a device without having to cut out a section of the display.
I don't have a Wear yet, I keep bidding for Urbanes on eBay but get outbid. I'm just a cheapskate I guess
I have the Huawei wach and, I have to say, I love it. The screen is great and the battery life lasts all day with no problem.
The only issue I have had is that the notification vibration is a little weak. I installed the Feel the Wear app and that had helped.

Feel the Wear says to, "Turn off the vibrate in the individual apps on your phone." I like them to vibrate on my phone too, so I use Light Flow to set custom vibrations. My Nexus 6 is rooted, which I think you have to be for Light Flow to do that.
It looks really good, but for that price! well I'd wait for the new gear from samsung.
This is my first smartwatch and couldn t be happier. Never had so many people noticing it and commenting on how nice it is. Don't think you'll be dissapointed if you do get one.

I can help!
I have the Moto 360 2nd gen 46mm and my Huawei gets here later today so when it does I'll post my initial thoughts and then after using it for a couple days I'll let you know if its worth it.
Update
Ok guys I received my Huawei Watch at 4:00pm today and it is now 10:22pm. So far I am in love with this device. However I will give you my negatives first then the positives, then a comparison with the Moto 360 2nd Gen. 1st negative the vibration on the Hauwei is so bad that you actually hear it rather then feel it. 2nd negative is that if you go for the metal link band you will more then likely need to take it to be resized for you which can cost up to 25 bucks. 3rd Negative depending on how big you are this watch may seem thick on your wrist however to me it feels perfect. Now on to the positives, 1st Positive The screen is nothing short of breathtaking compared to the Ips on the 360 where as when the 360 dims for always on it is pixelated the Huawei on the other hand remains crisp and stunning no matter what watch face you are using. 2nd Positive this watch looks like a real watch I got compliments even at the jewler who at first thought it was a Movado which range in the thousands of dollars. 3rd positive the box and unboxing is as luxurious as the price demands it to be and you truly feel like your money was well spent. These are my thoughts on the Huawei Watch and I'm my opinion if what I say sounds good to you then go for it. This watch is worth every penny even the $450 black with black metal band version I have.
Could you comment on the vibration on the Moto 360 in comparison to the Huawei? If the Huawei is as bad as people are saying then, for me, it defeats the whole purpose of having a smartwatch to notify you about notifications, if you can't even feel the vibration in some cases.
The Moto 360 has very nice vibration that you can feel so of that's what you want go for the new 360 I could feel it even while I was at the club with all the bass around me
Besides the vibration and missing light sensor (in combination with the brightness setting begin pretty deep in the Android wear menu), which I think is annoying;
- ambient is still pretty bright in dark room (again, no sensor). Can be annoying when watching TV, this made me having the watch with screen off and only manual screen on.
- can only measure heart rate when resting, while running is no option - it doesn't work and isn't accurate
- the pixels wont completely turn off when black, there is a red tint (my watch its unnoticeable (only while testing the extreme it is) but there is a topic here on xda with other examples.)
- the charger isn't as good as others, you must align the pins perfectly and pay attention if its charging.
Next to all this it's a pretty damn nice thing with a beautiful screen and probably the best smart watch, if it wasn't for the price. I hate and love it a bit more i guess

Try the app SWApp True Dark. I have found it to be the best way to have separate brightness for ambient mode. Note: sometimes you have the toggle the switch "On for Always On" off and back on again to make it control ONLY the ambient brightness. If you turn that off, it controls both, and gives you way more levels of brightness than the stock 5 (like 20 levels). I use watchawear and make custom blackout versions of the watchfaces, and set the brightness for ambient on 65 in SWApp True Dark and can almost get two full days (as in 45 hours) on a charge. If I wanted to I could only charge every other night.
Edit: BTW, the app is free with no ads...not a plug.
Oh yes that's so much better! Got it at 75 and it seems like a normal non glowing watch in a dark room now, love it.
Didn't even think to check for an app, cheers!
Edit: doesn't really work as it should, after the night I'm unable to get it to control only the ambient mode, somehow the toggle doesn't work either.
I've had the HW for a bit over a week. I got the M360 2015 46mm 2 days ago. I am returning the HW to Best Buy today.
I posted a long, detailed comparison over on the AC forums. The short version is the Qi charging and the bigger screen on the M360 won. Also, I and other people I showed them both to all agree the M looks nicer (comparing H Silver/Black leather to M Black/Black knurled bezel/Black leather).
The M is also just very slightly thinner. And, as another poster noted, the M ambient mode is not as bright, which is actually nicer (to me).
Also, the M 46mm has a 400 mAh battery. The H is only 300. The H got through the day with about 40% battery left, normally. The M seems to be getting to bedtime with 50% or a little more left. That could come in handy on days with extra heavy usage. Certainly, being able to plop the M on the Qi charger on my desk at work or the one in my truck could be handy.
Huawei has a speaker like the ZenWatch 2 for when 6.0 drops.
Thats all the reason you need.
I found some good deals on the Huawei Watch.

Got mine yesterday, and I think it's fantastic. I previously owned a Samsung Gear Live, and this is much nicer - the screen is brilliant, it's much better looking, the button is nicer and the whole thing feels very solid and well made, battery life so far is much better (I turned off the detection of bringing the watch up to look at it, which helps - when I do that mostly I only need the time, and I can press the button or screen for more), and the charger is better too (though still not the best).
Hi, I am using black steel with blackleather bracelet for 2-3 weeks. It is my first watch so I cant compare to anything and say what are pros and cons.
So shortly I am very very satisfied with the build quality and it's design.
The only thing that didn't met my expectations was that it doesn't have built in GPS. However I am not sure if it's very bad thing
Good work Huawei!

Gear s2 3G compared to Apple Watch size-wise.

This is not meant to be a full comparison here. Just was in my local ATT store today and put one on next to my Apple Watch to see how it compares size wise. Here are the pics.

As you can see, the thickness of the Gear S2 is for real. More than the Apple Watch even, at least eyeballing it. And it was pretty heave on the wrist too. However, this may have been related to the security device that was attached to it as well. The speaker on it was decent. I turned on some Samsung tunes with it and turned it all the way up and could hear it pretty clearly in the crowded ATT store. Functionality is basically the same as the non-3G version of the watch that I have for now.
Still torn on weather I wanna stick with this, or go with the LG Urbane 2nd generation.

Thanks for the pictures. Looks hideous! Maybe it actually looks better than your top picture? Was gonna run up to my local at&t store today, now definitely will to see for myself.

Thanks for sharing...wow that looks thicker than i imagined (or wanted). Looks like I will stick with my classic after all, considering i already have a gear s.
Fyi, I read the lg urbane lte will be 14mm...also very thick!

yeah the Urbane LTE is thick, but since it is larger overall, it probably won't look as weird.

Exactly my thoughts. I think it will hide the thickness better because the lugs and band are bigger too.

???
Even? Of course it's more than the Apple Watch. Apple Watch is thinner than a lot of smart watches..
Apple Watch - 10.5mm
LG Watch Urbane - 10.9mm
Gear S2, Huawei, Moto 360 - 11.4mm
Gear S2 3g, 13.4

That is just the case though, Apple is kind of being disingenuous about the real thickness of the watch which is 12.46 mm including glass and sensors:
Too bad! I've been waiting for a while for the gear s2 3G to show up, but as everyone can see, it is NOT worthy at all. Look at the thickness of the normal Gear S2.
The normal one is beauty, but it doesn't have a speaker. The second one is ugly af, but DOES have a speaker.
Conclusion: Wait for LG Watch Urbane 2... 1 week ago or so I was happy knowing that i'll buy the gear s2 3G sometime soon, guess i'll just stick with something else. Too bad, it was too good to be true...
just dont wear it under a long sleeve dress shirt, and it will be just fine..
It's not that bad. It's not really noticeably bigger/thicker than a normal 42mm watch (ex rolex)

Just went and checked one out at my local AT&T ... it's DEFINITELY bulkier, and it's extremely noticable, I had every intention of going 3G version, but it literally looks like you have a mini cereal bowl strapped to your arm and I'm a big dude and it still just looked big, bulky, stuck out too far and overall just kinda dumb looking, if I went straight from the Gear S then maybe I wouldn't notice, but after having the S2 reg version, the 3G looks like crap, can't say it's really the thickness that ruined it, it's more about the contoured bottom they put on it, that's what makes it look weird.
My 2 cents ... but I guess I'm gonna go ahead and just stick with my non smartwatch looking, sleek beautiful Gear S2 BT. .. damn Samsung lol

Nah, we were kind of in and out, spent about 10 minutes with the wife looking at it and both of us trying it on, she's petite and she has a S2 BT that she loves and looks good on her, but when she tried this is just looked ridiculous, can say the same for me as a big guy though, just looked really odd and bulky and even one notch below what I would put to fit me properly with a little extra space it still felt like the edge of the bottom was poking into my wrist bone, the way it's shaped and the edge around the bottom contour aren't confortable, from straight on it looks good, but from the sides it looks like a dolls bowl on your arm, feels heftier which was a concern, feeling cheap or something from the added plastic but I can say I didn't feel that was an issue, but everything else was.
I'm 90% sure at this point I'm not gonna bother with the 3G version and the 3G was all I wanted and just 1 try on turned me off of it.
I wanted the GPS for when I bike or hike, but my S6 Edge+ in a book bag will work fine for those days, and same with the speaker function, man do I miss that feature lol and there will be times I'll keep missing it (quick answering at work or while driving) but for the rest of the time I can grab my phone, and when I'm walking, biking or hiking I'll just wear my BT headphones as I would anyway ... I'm definitely sad the 3G doesn't seem to be what I hoped but if it was never an option the BT model is a win regardless.
But again I'm only 90% sure it's not for me, I might go grab one after release and give it a real world run, or maybe not. But I figured I'd give my 2 cents on it, they seem to be at every local AT&T so if anyone has any doubts definitely go play with one.

Vertical line on Gear S2 Classic display

I recently bought a Gear s2 classic and just noticed it has a very small vertical black line on the display. It's only probably a pixel wide and it runs up and down the screen a few mm left of center. I first noticed it on solid backgrounds such as the weather app. You have to look pretty close to notice it, but it's definitely there. Also, once you see it you cannot un see it! You can also see it on some of the watch faces that have sold color backgrounds. It is unnoticeable on darker or black backgrounds. I returned the watch and bought another Gear S2. Same problem. It has that small line in the exact same place! Am I super unlucky? Do you think this is some display defect? Is it just a normal part of the display? Has anyone else seen this issue? Again, you have to look close, I didn't notice it from far away.
Getting a third Gear S2 classic in the mail tomorrow! We'll see if it has the same issue.
I just have the regular S2, but checked on the blue "add city" Weather widget screen using 3x magnifying glasses. I have no line(s) whatsoever. Seems like you did get unlucky, twice.

I guess so! I Took a pic of it with my phone. Exact same place on both Classics. I had a regular Gear S2 and never noticed the line. The line is vertical right in between the zero.

In case anyone was curious, I just received my third Gear S2 classic. It has the same line in exactly the same place. However, It is not quite as dark this time. I bet all the displays have the same issue. It might be part of the manufacturing process? This also may only be an issue on the Classic models, as I haven't seen a regular model with the line yet. If you have a classic take a real close look at the display. I have a hard time believing i'm the only person with this issue. Especially since the issue is the same on 3 different watches from different stores! (Macy's, Best Buy, Amazon)
Photo ?
I'm too new on here to post links/photos... Can I PM you a photo? I took a good one of it actually.
Here we go.. 3 watches with the same exact line... :/

Thanks for the photo. I just rechecked my regular S2 with brightness at 5 and 10 on the add city weather screen wearing 3x magnifying glasses and I definitely do not have that line where you do, or anywhere else. That sucks!
Thanks for looking into it again. I still think this is just a problem with the Classic models. I've had 2 regular models (one for me and my GF) and both of those did not have the defect. I have yet to see it on a regular model. Classic number 4 is arriving today. If it has the defective display I'll probably just keep it.. Sigh. I'll definitely be contacting Samsung however!
Good news! My 4th Gear S2 Classic doesn't have the line! ? That's a lot of defective watches! I'm a happy camper! Just put my metal band on and I'm returning the last defective watch to Amazon.
I have the defect vertical line on my gear s2 and returning mine today. I happened to notice it this weekend and found this post.
I have the same line in my standard model which I received today
My gs2 classic has the same line in the same place. Ive tried the pixel repair app but with no satisfaction. If you find a way to fix it let me know. Other than the line i have no problems with the watch.

I couldn't find a way to fix it (there is none) so I sent it back...
I too have the same problem, except mine has two vertical parallel lines approximately 12mm apart and straddling the centre of the display
I thought it was part of the Design, however now you guys have the same I think not
Could you advise where to get the pixel repair app.?
I have an Gear S2 Sport for 11 days, today I saw 1 stuck pixel (i guess it was a group pixels, but after some time just 1 left). Yes, it isn't vertical line, but It's annoying too much. I tried to run pixel repair for not a long time, maybe 5-7 minutes at all, but nothing.

I don't need the pixel repairer now because , on Sunday I sent mine back through Curry's and the new one came yesterday, I am glad to report there are no lines or issues, really pleased I didn't get another one that had issue's
I have had a lot of bad luck, this is the fourth and final one, very happy.
1st 1 was off internet S2 sport, supposed to be new, but was locked to someone's Samsung account. (got refund)
2nd was new from curry's S2 Sport, went back after 1 week when I noticed the strap delaminating from clasp.
3rd bought from curry's was the classic upgrade to get rid of strap problems of sport. sent back due to line problem on screen.
4th Replacement Classic, perfect in all aspects. I think I'll be ok now finally. £299.00 later (excluding 4 bands & screen protector) which set me back a further £135. there is a new strap out, A Ceramic one by Samsung not available except in France for about £100 I gotta have it too.
On my 4th watch now..The display was perfect until just recently. The SAME LINE developed in the SAME SPOT! Apparently this must be a wide spread defect, because my display didn't have it, but now it does. It's not as dark as the first watch, but I have a feeling it gets worse. I bet many people have the same problem, they just haven't noticed it yet! I can't unsee the line! I wish I hadn't randomly decided to look for it.
I've got exactly the same line as you've described on my Gear S2 classic. I've got the watch almost 6 months back but noticed this line only recently. So I don't know if this line has developed over time or was there the entire time
Besides this issue (and another issue with the loss of paint on a side button) I do love this watch. But this lack of qualtity is very annoying - especially while looking at the price of the device

Help! Gear S3 Screen is Dead/Pixelated After 1 Week

So everything on my Gear S3 works beautifully except I have a major problem where the screen is pixelated/dead.
I believe all the functionality works because I am able to start/turn off the watch by feeling the vibration.

The first 2 times it happened, I was able to fix it by charging the watch for some reason. But the 3rd time it happened, charging would not fix the issue too. Anyone have a similar issue?
I have only gotten the watch for 1 week.
3 weeks on, never encounter such a problem. You should return it for a new one.

This happened to mine when I applied a watchface from Watchmaster app. It was fixed by holding the power for 7 secs and rebooting. I think it might have been caused by a duplicate watch face. Is yours working okay?

Unfortunately it did not work no matter how many times I reboot or held the power button. I returned it to the shop for a replacement so have a new one. I am afraid to install any non Samsung watch faces now... I mean it's pretty poor to have a watch face able to make your whole watch unusable.
PS. I didn't install the WatchMaster app but had a few watch faces from WatchMaster.
Hey i don't think u should be afraid to try out non samsung apps. U probably had a defective unit. Do not worry about it much and enjoy your watch. In any case, u have a warranty.

I have the Classic and Frontier, have had to get both replaced. The Frontier had bad QC, there was as side that was missing paint, you can see the silver stainless steel under. The Classic had scratches as well, out of the box. These weren't egregious issues by any means, but I am tired of paying full price and not getting a product free from defects and that is why I decided to swap them out, Amazon sent replacements and I sent the defective ones back.
I have had every Samsung phone since the S1. When they were all plastic it didn't matter much, but as Samsung started to use glass and materials (also more expensive materials, so destroying it for a minor defect costs them a lot more $$) they aren't accustomed to, their QC suffered. For example, I got my wife and myself a pair of S7 Edges. Mine had a small divot (pin sized) on the front screen out of the box and my wife's had a deep scratch on the back glass, again out of the box. The only reason I didn't return or swap out the phones was because they were sold out and phones get scratched up quickly anyway.
Samsung has more QC issues than other OEMs and if you haven't experienced them then good for you, but I have, especially in my recent purchases.
I love Samsung products, but welcome to the Samsung experience.
Gear S3 dead pixel at the top of the screen
i am having strange problem. i have noticed dead pixel at the top of my watch screen exactly below the 12 am/pm. its a proper half round dull pixels on screen. i am using black watch faces and its not visible on black and dull colors but on solid color like blue its black. and on green its light green.. anyone knows what is it. its my new watch and it really hurts me. and for a little dot i dont want samsumg people to open my watch. plz help
I have the same issue with dead pixels around the 12. Purchased it from Best Buy and their recommendation was to take it back to the store for Factory repair. I wonder how long that will take?
Same here, I bought it from ebay Lte Att version. I believe common issue.

About a month ago, i bought a unit of Gear S3 and it works fine until recently this exact problem occured. I sent it back to the service center twice for them to switch the board at first, and the display for the second time. It's been a day after that and so far so good.
Hi all,
My s3 watch screen turned green complet3ly. I can barely see any apps on it. Need to look really sharp to see where is to power it off on the screen.
What to do?
Thanks

Design
Absolutely gorgeous, I love it! Something refreshing, solid build, very light, slim and small make it very easier to carry.
What I like
Screen - Gorgeous screen, 120hz really make differences here, scroll animation is so smooth.
Performance - Thanks Samsung finally give Malaysia market Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 instead of Exynos.
Signal - Perfect! No more signal issue of Call, Data, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Loud Speaker - Loudspeaker is clear and nice, no high-pitched issue.
Sound - No issue wireless from Bluetooth for my Sony WH-1000XM4 & Apple AirPods Pro or wired via USB-C converter to 3.5mm, it just nice fire-up my Sony MDR-Z1R.
Gaming - No doubt definitely no issue here. All games play just fine.
Neutral for me
Camera - It is not the best, but it do what it can and look good. The cool part is you can use both Rear camera for taken Selfie.
What I dislike
Screen Center Line - It is not that obvious but you still can see it and feel it. It will be great if it is totally gone.
Battery Life - 1st time I bother about the battery life. It is not well optimize, I believe future firmware can make it better.
AOD - The main screen and cover screen AOD control should be separate. Currently Cover AOD control is very little and the general one did not manage it most.

Good review thank you, I agree with all you've said, I love my flip its so nice to have something different.
My biggest disappointment is the camera, I have been thoroughly spoiled with my Huawei P30 pro for the last 2 years and the flip is no more than just okay, I will swap my sim over and use my P30 for its superb cameras when I go on trips.
I've tweaked some settings and Battery life for me is okay, I can get 4 - 5 hours screen on time with my usage so it gets me through the day but there is no reserve, if I'm going out in the evening I will charge it just in case.
One thing that bugs me is the cover display does not have adaptive brightness it's either to bright indoors or too dim outdoors, trying to adjust the dim display manually in sunlight is almost impossible!
I enjoy this phone more than any since the wonder of my first iPhone 3G back in the day

Agreed the cover should have adaptive brightness as well.
I hope next generation Samsung will put an equivalent camera as they use for Galaxy S series.
This phone is not perfect but I just simply like it until next generation is out and I hope next generation will solving the not perfect part.
My set is completed now!

Mine should arrive in days. One thing I'd like to see on next models is ePaper Display on the rear like the one on the old Pebble Smartwatches
