Surface RT not receiving updates - General Questions and Answers

Hi everybody.
Here is the story of the pointless week I just had. Some of the information might be needed to help me, but if you want you can skip to the end for the actual question.
I got hold of an old surface rt at my girlfriend's place and, since I left my laptop in my own house, I thought I might try to set it up and use it for a few things I needed to do (not much more than checking emails, watching youtube and stuff like that). I quickly realised the device was a bit useless (microsoft store and windows update were not working properly, internet explorer being internet explorer and so on).
I then found a guide from alexenferman, and a few threads in this forum, on how to install windows 10. I am neither developer nor a true geek, but I can follow instructions and I messed about with this type of things in the past, so I thought I'd give it a try.
The first half of the process went quite smoothly and I was able to install windows 10 with SecureBooth disabled. The only issues I had were that I could not update windows 10 either, and I could not sign in with a microsoft account, which prevented me to use the store again and I had no way of installing apps from the appstore put together by alexenferman.
Quite frankly, I just got tired of wasting my time, so I decided to revert back to 8.1. For that, I first clean installed windows 8. Then, since I could not update to 8.1, I used a usb recovery image and reset my surface rt with windows 8.1.
At the moment I am on windows 8.1, the store works, but windows update doesn't. I keep checking for updates and get different errors. After troubleshooting a couple of times I now just get error 8024A000. I looked it up and tried the methods found online, sfc scannow cannot find anything, other fixes do not really work. Basically I feel in a loop and a bit lost (Speaking of loops, contacting microsoft support has been an infinite loop between the windows and surface division).
tldr: is there anybody here that can help me with updating Windows 8.1 RT (My goal would be to get to update 3 and possibly jailbreaking after that)? Did I mess things up irreversibly by installing windows 10? Should I just buy a new tablet and chuck away this useless piece of junk that is causing me a nervous breakdown? Thank you very much for your attention, and sorry for the lengthy message but I need someone to talk to, somebody that doesn't simply repeat a script.

Updates ( read: patches ) automatically get rolled out by OEM if they deem it necessary.

[Q] Need help unlocking my phone

Ok, so I hate boring generic ringtones. And plus, I like to have a unique ringtone that no one else would ever use, so that I always know when it's my phone ringing. However, some corporate idiot at Microsoft actually decided that us having the freedom to pick our personal ringtones on our personal phones, is a bad idea. I'd like to punch that guy.
So, anyways, last week my phone told me I needed to update it, and I did hoping that maybe one of these updates would allow me to add ringtones. Nope.
So, I started searching, and found some chevron app that is supposed to add ringtones. I followed the instructions step by step, and it didn't work. These instructions didn't suggest or say there were any requirements for me to have taken action to unlock my phone, so I can only assume whoever put up the instructions are idiots that didn't put complete instructions up, or made a program that doesn't work. Either way, that's quite frustrating.
So, I search, and while I've not found anything that actually states that you definitely need to unlock your phone for the ringtone app to work (It would be nice if someone out there could actually give clear instructions, but no one seems to understand that concept), but from what I gather that's probably what I need to do.
So, I get the chevronwp7 installer, which was a ***** to find, since most links go to the website for the app, which oddly enough doesn't have the app, but does have the ringtone app that doesn't work for me. Finally I find it, and it keeps telling me it can't communicate with the phone.
Now then, a little more searching, and I find some certificates that I need to install on the phone. So I do that. The thing still can't communicate with my phone.
So I search more, and I find that microsoft decided they really don't want me to pick a ringtone, and have blocked this chevron thing from working with their updates.
Who the hell do they think they are? I buy a device, once I pay my money to buy something, don't I have the freedom to do what I want with the device that I now own? I really think these developers that try to control how I use my devices that I own really need to get out of my business! I just want microsoft to leave me and my device that I own alone. But, they didn't, and screwed me over.
So, now I need to find a way to get rid of the update. I could reset my phone, but I've not found anything that clearly tells me if that removes the updates or not, or how to remove the updates.
Also, I installed the windows phone device manager, which looks to be official software that should work, and when I try to use the set ringtones option in there to add ringtones to my device, all I get is unable to connect to work phone (work phone is the name of my phone).
Can someone here offer some clear instructions how I can just get some damn ringtones? Please?
Many thanks in advance.

I contribute where I have something to contribute. I didn't call anyone here idiots, but I did express frustration in unclear instructions that weren't complete. I have followed any instructions I have found step by step, I deal with computers and electronics all the time and know what I'm doing. So, if it isn't working, it's because no one has been clear in how to properly do this.
And I don't understand why I"m being criticized for feeling entitled to use something that I paid for. If I knew microsoft was going to lock this thing down to this point, and take away features I had taken for granted, I would have never gotten the thing.
If I have something to contribute to you, I will. I contribute to places all over the internet where I have knowledge or material to contribute. When it comes to this phone, I'm out of my element. It's not that I came here to specifically not contribute, but what do you want from me? If you can get me ringtones, I will definitely express my thankfulness. I would think asking the right questions, and getting a step by step set of instructions put up here would be a contribution to this place, since at this time there is no step by step beginning to end clear to follow instructions on how to get ringtones on a windows phone.
So, once again, please explain how I can do what I am trying to do here. I thought that's what this forum was for.
I understand that you are frustrated, and that's fine. In the future though, try not to take it out on the people that can help you
To answer your question, the tool that allows you to unlock your device, Chevron WP7, only works on OS versions 7004 (the original release version) and 7008 (the pre copy and paste version). Chevron does the same as paying Microsoft $99 to developer unlock your phone, which lets you put home-made apps (like the ones people make here, such as the custom ringtone installer) and apps not in the marketplace on your phone. Since you said you updated your phone, I'm assuming you have the NoDo update, which is OS version 7390 (the update that adds the copy and paste feature to your phone). Unfortunately, there is currently no way to unlock your phone if it is running NoDo, but Zune should have created a backup of your phone that if you restored it would put you back to version 7004 or 7008, which are unlockable.
Ok, thanks, I appreciate your help on this.
I figured out how to run a restore from the Zune, and have done so. However, I still can't get the chevronwp7.exe file to work. The phone is restored to it's previous state, zune is open, the phone is connected, and when I run the file all I get is
"Sorry, I'm having trouble communicating with the phone
- Please make sure it's connected using USB
- Please start the Zune application"
I have met both requirements, it does not work. And I have confirmed that this has OS 7008. I've run the certificate file on the phone, and have set the installer to run as administrator in XP SP3 mode, as a site online suggested. Nothing works, it doesn't work, and I'm following all instructions properly.
What do I need to do to get this to work?
Thanks.
every one just can unlock his/her phone from pre-nodo update...
Have you made sure that you have the phone's screen on and is displaying the home screen where all your tiles are and not the lockscreen?

I didn't do that, as there were no instructions to do that. But, now I have tried to do that, and that has made no difference.

somebody who will take your phone and do it for you? I am pretty sure you will get it to work if you take your time, keep reading and trying. Worked for me too.
I've read everything there is out there to do this, and followed every step. I have the phone on a version that is compatible. I have installed the certificates to the phone. I have the chevron installer. I have the phone connected with zune, not as a guest phone. I have zune open. I have the phone out of sleep mode, showing the tile screen. I run the installer. I keep getting that error message that it can't connect to the phone that tells me to connect it via usb (it is) and to run zune (it is).
I've tried everything.
There is something missing from the instructions.
I need further help, which is why I am here. Can someone please help me?
I really wish someone would post some proper instructions or actually get a working procedure posted.
Once again, I have my windows phone on a compatible version with the chevron installer. I downloaded both the certificates and chevron installer. I installed the certificates to the phone. I've synced the phone with zune, it is connected to the computer, and not as a guest. I have the phone on, and on the tile screen. I run the installer, and I still get that same error prompting me to connect the phone with usb and open zune.
I've done everything.
There is something missing.
Are you guys here to help, or just to laugh at others misfortunes? I've done all you've said, it doesn't work.
Can you guys get a working procedure and/or installers please?
what OS are you running (XP? Vista? 7?) and also what version of the os are you running (x32 or x64) on your host computer. I know that when I was trying to unlock my phone that it wouldn't work on my desktop however, it would work on my laptop (both x64 win7). I don't know why, but sometimes switching USB ports also helps with this (some usb ports are lower power than others). Also, don't get mad if you cant get it on the first try. Last resort would be to hard reset your phone.
Are you sure that zune is also running while you are trying to unlock your phone? You should try it while zune is running because that is how the phone knows that it is connected to a computer at all. Also, if your phone says Syncing then you may have better success
I hope this helps a little bit ;-)
you would think there would be 100s of people posting problems with the installation if you were correct and the instructions were clearly poor. I don't see those posts. You apparently tried the obvious. There might just be a registry entry on your machine that prevents you from doing what you want (e.g. USB related) or your Antivirus and Firewall program prevent the connection.
I suggest you try this on an entirely different computer.
edit: Just in case you have an LG phone you can actually unlock it before AND after the NoDo update using the LG registry editor. Directions are listed here.
I am using Windows 7 x64. I have tried multiple usb ports. It is a samsung phone. I have also tried disabling my antivirus, but that didn't help either. Zune is always open, and phone and zune are syncing without problems.
I will try on another computer tomorrow and see what happens.
Ok, I have tried again on a different computer and have the same problem.
Once again, I have followed all instructions as posted. I have my windows phone on a compatible version. I have zune open. I have the phone awake and on the tile screen. I installed the certificates on the phone. I run the chevron installer, and it continues to tell me I need to have zune open and the phone connected with usb, of which I have done both.
I've yet to see any evidence that this program actually works.
I've found several threads around the internet world with people reporting my same problem, with no solution ever found for them. Usually the thread ends up getting hijacked and talking about different issues that aren't mine, and no one solves the initial problem.
Please, could someone get together a set of instructions that works for this process, because this isn't working.
Thanks.
I guess u could try hard resetting your phone (in settings/about) and then trying to unlock 1 more time. Last resort, buy a wp7 dev license and then u can sideload all you want (at a 99$ price, of course). If u don't want to pay that, then try again. Also make sure that the second computer you tried detects your phone as NOT a guest when you try to unlock it. Just keep trying!
before you hard reset try this registry mod. It fixes some usb connection problems for users who are trying to use the device manager. I've had connection problems on my laptop and this fixed it.
good luck
also, please do not make statements like "it's not working". just because it's not working for you doesn't mean you can make a global statement like that. The people who put instructions up here are not trying to lead people into a dead-end like your posts suggest. They are trying to help. Put yourself in a position of somebody who posts a solution which apparently works for most people and then somebody comes back and writes "you must be an idiot". Or in other words. It's working for me and others here, so it must be working for everybody. You must be an "idiot" who cannot follow instructions and you must be doing something wrong. Wouldn't that annoy you? Note that I am using your own description of the situation. All that does is shut the door for any help you could get in the first place. Why would I help somebody who calls me an idiot?
Thanks for that suggestion, I will give that a try.
My purpose in emphasizing that I've followed the instructions step by step is to make it clear that I am doing that. I'm not suggesting that the people that write these procedures are idiots, but I know that often when someone comes along posting issues they are viewed as the idiot. So I just want to make it clear that I've read the sites, I've done the research, I've tried all the suggestions out there, and I have verified I've done everything correctly, just to make sure no one shrugs it off as a id-10-t error, or suggest I need to rtfm.
I apologize if I've come off as insulting the people that have done the work to make what I"m trying to do possible.
try turning off all data related options? enable airplane mode, turn-off wifi, blutooth etc.

noobie WP7 system update question

Hello xda! , newbie WP7 user here, getting my first WP7 device here, I am switching from iPhone 4,
I have a pretty simple question but searched all over the place and didn't seem to find a straight answer - is the OS updates for WP7 done via Zune (like itunes with iphone) or like most Android devices via Carrier OTA? I'm getting a HTC Surround and it's going to replace my ATT iphone line, that's why I am concerned.
Thanks for any input.
You get the update notification on your phone (or Zune if you hook up before you phone tells you) and then the update is done through Zune on the computer as it allows a back up of your phone to be made and makes the update process more reliable... Fairly easy though, does all the work for you

thanks! that's exactly what I needed to know sounds quite straight forward, I'm concerned because a lot of android devices can be a PITA when it comes to OS updates.

Service pack 3 and Zune Software

My Samsung focus arrived yesterday. I got the notification for an update. This may be for nodo. Mango is also about be rolled out.
So first thing to do is install zune, which requires at least win xp service pack 3.
My problem is my laptop came with pre installed windows XP service pack 2.
So, can anybody guide me on this? Are there some hassles in upgrading to sp3? I searched the net and micro soft site and others was pointing me to a file bigger than 300 MB. I also read some guys had some problems in already installed data. What is the safest way in my situation?
Thanks
My personal preference is to download the distribution file (300+MB) and install from that. My experiance using Windows update has not been good. Installs some undates, reboot, install some updates, reboot, etc, etc. Not sure if its smarter now or not, why chance it.
If you are that far behind in the OS, you may also find an issue with the Windows update agent after you install SP3. Without the latest agent, Zune may not update properly and Windows update website may not update you properly. Earlier this week this happened on both my XP Pro (w/ SP3) machine and a Vista Home Premium machine. So if you get the Zune update errors, you will need to get the latest update agent.
The microsoft knowledge base article is 949104

Help: Is a New Cubot X6 image available? System is compromised!

Hello!
I would like to ask for help installing either a new Cubot X6 Android or a linux based system. Until recently I wasn't aware of what kind of aggressive trojans for Android happen to compromise a phone to a degree where the solution is to buy a new one. I do not want to accept that. Therefor I am here to ask for help.
WLAN enabled - the phone runs nutts. It causes unknown apps to be installed, ruining the function of the phone completely. I bought it via ebay, a used Cubot X6. I had the device years ago until i sat on it which happened to break the display, but I liked it and bought it again, used. (The used one cost 60 bucks, a replace-display would have cost 35, so I ran with the used one - big mistake as it turned out).
Now, it's root-system is compromised. I set it to only allow apps from trusted sources. I did not download any apps beside well known trust-worthy ones, like google-maps, WhatsApp, all together.
When I first enabled WLAN, it suddenly started to display a message of the shutting down of "org.rain.ball.update" and also "ssCleaner ("suc", "chengele") is trying to obtain your current position", "ymm" cancelled, and several others. If I allow WLAN it automatically downloads 10-20 apps, some of which correlate with my laptop visited websites (alibaba), others apps from sites I have never visited ("sexy videos"). Basically the phone gets so busy that it needs to be restarted to allow any control of the phone.
I tried to fix it with Avaast, Avira, and Malewarebytes without success. With Avaast it also displays: "/storage/sdcard0/.androidsdata/is.jar", but is unable to fix it. I guess I would have to erase the SD-Card too, if I were to have the system replaced, once. None of the above things can be fixed with the tools at hand. The deletions are always interrupted, nothing gets improved permanently.
I immediately did a "Reset to factory condition", but when I enabled WLAN I didn't even install an app - it all started again, as described above.
So, a quick Google-Research turned out, there are trojan-horses, that cover themselves by pretending to be system applications, so that it would be nearly impossible to get rid of the trojan - only solution: buy a new one (See this article wwwDOTblog.lookout.com/blog/2015/11/04/trojanized-adware/).
Now, while I have a broken device and a trojan device, one solution would be to mount the display of the compromised one onto the broken one. I know it's easy to break the display during this. That's why I am here to ask, if someone might have suggestions of what else could be done to have this fixed?
Maybe it would be possible to get an uncompromised mirror-image of a Cubot X6 from the internet that would replace every data on mine? Would it fix it, if I were to install this: "Ubuntu Touch - Version 15.04 Phone"?
Any help would be appreciated. If I were to take a wild guess, I'ld say the trojan horses might have been developed by Apple...... So what am I to do now? Buy a new one?
EDIT: If you were to not believe this to be true, I could shoot a video of it with my laptop. It's really strange, but it is as it is. EDIT 2: Avaast displays a message, the phone has been rooted.
Please help!! Thank you so much!!

Do a search for your rom and instructions on how to flash. It will replace system partition and problem should then be gone.

A google search for "cubot x6 firmware" will give you some good results.
Here's also Cubot forums, with link to downloads.
Hope that will help, and be sure to read up on the subject on how to flash before you start
So many Thanks! You linked me to the perfect spot! Thank you!
While i will redo my laptop with linux soon, you got experience with having linux on the phone? If i wee to try and mes up, it still were possible to go bac to the original cubot files u linked to, correct?
Thank you!!

Lumia 1020 in 2020 ? What is working?

Hi !
I see a lot of Lumia 1020 on Ebay and I have a few questions that could help for a decision.
What is working now on this phone? (Email/contacts/calendar synchronisation, SMS/MMS, GPS, camera ...?)
What would happen if we do a factory reset ? Which apps remains?
Thanks in advance.
Hi there.
I own a Nokia Lumia 1020, and I guess it owns me to this day as well. I guess nowadays phones are only going up in prices & looks, just like us - people.
I have to switch from Windows Phone to Android, finally last year - January 2019. I still am not able to forget it's shear awesomeness! I still keep it with me, I have tweaked it around 2017 and managed to run Windows 10 Mobile
It works at a quite basic smartphone level still. I have limited the phone to:
Windows 10 Phone Mobile
Version: 1511
OS build: 10.0.10586.107
Glance Screen: Works - completely.
Groove Music: Works - I listen to songs often.
WiFi: Works (I used Edge browser, Spotify - somehow it works partially)
Outlook Mail: Works.
Contacts: Works (I sometimes am having problem in deleting duplicate contacts, but that's some other issue I guess)
Calendar: Reminds me of Birthdays & Events, never used it more than that.
Telegram: Works
Here Maps, Here Drive: Works great!
Camera/Alarm: Works -just like they used to.
Calculator: Works - but it does not have currency conversion like Windows 10 for PC's have.
Gallery: Works and syncs, as of now.
Camera: Works! But is shi*ty, because it's Windows camera, I managed to skip installing Lumia Camera
SIM/SMS: Used to work, until, I messed up SIM Connector - now waiting to go home and work it out, after Corona lock-down eases in my place.
MMS: Might work, I never used MMS service.
News/Weather: Doesn't work! Open the app, it redirects to Windows Store - Windows Store says app already installed. This is never-ending loop. of sadness.
WhatsApp: It used to work before I went down to Windows Phone 8.1, then I can;t even download it from Windows Store. Looking for XAP file for it, just to read old conversations.
So, it is like - Very basic essential things actually still work.
I am actually looking to Install Android or Windows 10 (PC) or Ubuntu/some Linux.
Also, I have my WhatsApp backup - I don;t know what to do with it, as it is not usable with WhatsApp Android.
Thank you for passing by.
I actually upgraded from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile, to use Instagram and other latest app available for Windows 10 Mobile. But since, nothing works now, I am actually thinking of just giving it a factory reset.
It will then come back to Windows 8.1 Mobile (after few updates, if they still work)
Shall I downgrade to Windows 8.1 in Lumia 1020? It might give me access to apps like Lumia Camera, Here Maps, etc. but other apps I don't know.
Shall I downgrade to Windows 8.1 in Lumia 1020? It might give me access to apps like Lumia Camera, Here Maps, etc. but other apps I don't know.[/QUOTE]
That is exactly my question, I would like to reset the phone but I don't know what is working after that, somebody could help maybe? I am ready to loose spotify and vlc but it would not be good if I loose Onedrive with Onenote. I already know that email account exchange is working fine but it seems that onedrive and onenote comes with microsoft account.
You can get the Lumia Camera & Here Maps apps back, on the cost of OneNote.
In this reply, I had written like a whole story that happened when you started this thread. I saved those words away & this is the short version of what I've to say now:
You can get the Lumia Camera, Here Maps app back. That too on either W10M or WP8.1, ofcourse. But you've to compromise OneNote in both working cases.
When I saw your post and replied first, I was running W10M on my Lumia 1020. Right after that, I decided to downgrade to WP8.1, in hope for classic LUMIA experience back. :/
Because, at some point, I lost Lumia Camera, Here apps - because I did a HARD-RESET after upgrading to W10M, which I regret.
So, I used WDRT(Windows Device Recovery Tool) to reset my Lumia to Factory Settings having WP8.1. I got the apps back, they're working great.
Being on WP8.1 was hard for me, because of this unable to sign-in to Store thing. I decided to Upgrade back to W10M again, which I thought was not going to be successful.
But I still gave it a try and Wooohooo! I am now on W10M OS Build: 10.0.10586.107 (beyond this build Here Maps won't work, but OneNote might do)
Basically, in the last week, I managed to downgrade LUMIA 1020 to WP8.1 and back to W10M again, added with Lumia Camera, Here Maps, Here Drive, Glance Screen etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Before regretting and doing anything, you can always discuss here, as I suspect that some of apps that you're able to use now might not work afterwards just like OneNote.
so please don't blame me for any un-calculated steps you may take. I am more than willing to discuss things in detail, as much as I can.
~ Thanks
I got mine today with Windows 8.1. As I see it is not a good move to upgrade to Windows 10...
Win 10 on Lumia 1020
Chandigarh: I have Winternals and the other needed tools, but I have a question: When you installed Win 10 on your Lumia 1020, was it in May 2020? Did you follow the procedure in which you basically trick the phone into believing it's a different model using Regedit, or did you find an ISO or other file? I just bought an A-grade 1020 as a test phone to try Win 10 Mobile or other OS.
My main 1020 has a ton of apps, including several camera apps like Lumia Camera, Flat Camera, and others. Like many others, I went to the Store and downloaded a couple dozen apps before the store closed. Thank God I loaded TuneIn radio on it. I have a bunch of cool music sites as Icons, including a Polish Republic station that plays only Pink Floyd, with NO commercials. I won't mess with that phone. So the one I just bought is for play.
How do you like Win 10 Mobile?

Yes, John, it was indeed in May 2020. I followed this thread for the procedure : https://forum.xda-developers.com/windows-10-mobile/guide-win10-mobile-offline-update-t3527340
NOTE: If you read the procedure in the linked thread with care, you'll find that keyboard might have issues after upgrade (Depends upon region). I had a totally useless keyboard after updating to W10, but I followed further instructions on that and got my keyboard fixed.
NOTES 2 :
- Change your phone's information to Factory default names after you get to Win 10 Mobile Version 1511, OS Build 10.0.10586.107, as Here Maps, Here Drive are not supported after this version.
- Also thanks to MS, if you go for further upgrade build, you'll loose not only Here Maps but Maps from Microsoft won't work either, as maps don't even load due to incapable GPU in Lumia 1020!?
- After upgrade, don't update the Here Maps, Here Drive apps from store. Turn automatic updates OFF Or they'll stop working. I've experienced this earlier.

I limited my own Lumia to Win 10 Mobile Version 1511, OS Build 10.0.10586.107, so I can use Here Maps and Here Drive. I can access Store and download some rare apps but others cannot be downloaded as it needs latest Windows builds. For Online Music, I use Jio Saavn being from India. It runs ad-free compared to its Android version and serves to most of my music needs, including English songs as well.
In a nutshell, I liked my Lumia 1020, still use it for occasional photography and music. It used to be great until Nokia left & MS stepped in. Still not bad though!
I am actually trying to work on having Win10X installed on Lumia 1020, if it supports it! Fingers-crossed or I'll use it in my future project being a Mechanical Engineer.
Thanks!
I found that last night and it worked!
I loaded all of the files he listed, started the process, and went to bed. This morning I had a Windows 10 Lumia 1020 phone! And the Store works again, although not all apps are compatible or work. I'm glad I loaded a bunch onto my Win 8.1 phone before that store completely closed down.
It's very cool, and I think it's just as fast, but having just spent an hour or so playing with it, I have noticed some annoyances. Battery life does seem to be shorter, but we'll see after some discharge-recharge cycles. This is a refurbished phone, so I'm not sure how new the battery is. I replaced the one in my 8.1 phone several times until I found an actual Nokia one. DANGER WILL ROBINSON: there's an aftermarket battery on Amazon and eBay that claims to have a super long life. It has a white cover. It's crap! I installed one in my Win 8.1 1020, took the phone to the Florida Everglades, and the stupid battery crashed and died. Thank God I took my Pureview 808 as a backup.
Anyway, now I have another new toy to play with during this stupid pandemic. I think I'm going to love this site!

I just found that battery with the white cover on eBay. It's called the BV-5XW. I had it in my phone for less than a week.

OK, something crazy happened. I turned off Windows update but I mistakenly downloaded a couple maps for offline use for HERE Drive, and suddenly DRIVE didn't work. I got the canned "Not supported by this version of Windows" message. So I connected my phone back to my PC and decided to re-do the install that Hikari created, but it received another error message. And now WDRT wouldn't work with my phone, despite my rebooting efforts.
So I did a hard reset, and Windows 10 came back - BUT IT AN OLDER VERSION called LUMIA Windows 10, version 1451. The first one was 1551 (latest good version).
Here are some screenshots. The phone is MUCH faster on Windows 10. Even my wife agrees to that. And the Store works for a lot of apps, plus all the ones I owned downloaded to Lumia Windows 10 1451, and they work great.
Except ONE - Messaging. All the settings for SMS and MMS settings are there, but there's no app, and the one that my 8.1 phone has says it's not compatible with this version of Windows Mobile.
Does anyone have a workaround, like a 3rd party app?

I attached the wrong picture. Here's the SMS/MMS page. Everything except an APP!
This is probably a "dead thread", but here goes:
I bought TWO Lumia 1020's to play with in order to preserve my Win 8.1 phone. One is a "refurbished" model, and the other is one of those "Made in China" models. The build quality isn't bad, actually.
I've been running 1607 Anniversary on the refurbished one, and 1703 full install on the China model. It's hard to assess the battery life issue because of the differing ages of the phones. My original has an actual Nokia battery, but it's about 2 yrs old. I have no idea how old the refurbished one is, but I would guess that the China model battery is fairly new.
As Steve Litchfield points out in his All About Windows Phone page, 1607 is really all the further one should take the dual-core 1020. 1703 is a "reach". Both versions have access through the store to good turn-by-turn GPS programs, and there are other good apps and stations that you can use to replace MSN Sports and Weather with the 1607 version. If you use Shazam and TuneIn, those will be gone. The replacement for Shazam, Soundhound, has cool features but it isn't as quick to identify music as Shazam.
As soon as I was happy, I changed the registry back to a Lumia 1020 and rested on my laurels. But Microsoft never rests..........
About 20 minutes before the ball came down on New Year's eve, I noticed that I wasn't getting shelled with texts from friends and family members. I glanced down and had a conniption fit - all I saw was a black screen with white gears turning. Microsoft was installing 1703 "on the sly". There was no way it would be finished in time, so I popped out my SIM carrier (yes, while it was running) and popped it back into my Win 8 phone which was off. As soon as the "update" was finished, I checked to see if I had left the phone set to a 640XL, but all Reg entries and the ID said RM-877, Lumia 1020, etc. And a part B of 1703 was scheduled for the upcoming evening.
After playing with the "1703a" version, I was surprised how quick it was - a bit faster than 1607, and MUCH faster than the 1703 "full install".
It looks like the only way to completely eliminate subterfuge by Microsoft is to change the values in the Registry. The keys are easy to find using InterOps. But after I edit them, they go right back to what they were. So today I'm writing a few lines and I'll use the Import function in InterOps to see if that works. If it does, I'll post the text here.
Today, my two Win 10 Lumia 1020's were booted off my office Outlook email account because the phones still have a reference in the Registry that reads WP8. Or at least, that's what Outlook says. Both phones have 1703 installed.
Does anyone know the secret hiding spot in the Registry that refers to "WP8", if it actually exists?
I've combed through the Registry using InterOps to no avail.
Hi !
I have a Lumia 1020 64gb and I saw recently that it is now possible to have a root access with the possibility to install all the applications we want.
Somebody tried with Lumia 1020?
A 64GB 1020? Wow, those are as rare as Unicorns!
I assume you mean while retaining Windows 8.1? With Win 10 you can sideload pretty much everything including Win 8 apps like Shazam and even HERE Drive, but the duo-core processor runs too slow. I'm waiting for someone like Hikari to push Win 11 on a 1020, LOL.
I committed heresy and switched to the 950. The stills are very competitive, and the 950 has 4K video from which you can capture great stills. And the 950's hexacore CPU does a decent job with Win 10 .
Yes, I would like to keep win 8.1.
Yes, it is very rare. I don't want to brick it
It seems that it does not work but if there is a chance to add some apps, it will be very good, I don't want to push win 10 on the 1020.
I have the 950, but it is very disappointing. I have a 808 pureview, the 950 is not as good as these 2 phones for photographies. And It miss a processor a little bit more powerful to read a 1080p mkv video, so for multimedia I prefer an android phone or tablet.
I still have my 808 and my N8, but it's getting hard to find good batteries for the 808. I took my 808 to Waikiki in 2014 and took spectacular pictures with it. And I used it as a backup for my 1020 when the aftermarket battery that I had installed in my 1020 crashed and burned, 3 weeks after I installed it.
You could buy a cheap 32GB 1020 on eBay and experiment with that. I bought a couple, including a new Chinese-made one for $60.
