Hi !
I see a lot of Lumia 1020 on Ebay and I have a few questions that could help for a decision.
What is working now on this phone? (Email/contacts/calendar synchronisation, SMS/MMS, GPS, camera ...?)
What would happen if we do a factory reset ? Which apps remains?
Thanks in advance.
Hi there.
I own a Nokia Lumia 1020, and I guess it owns me to this day as well. I guess nowadays phones are only going up in prices & looks, just like us - people.
I have to switch from Windows Phone to Android, finally last year - January 2019. I still am not able to forget it's shear awesomeness! I still keep it with me, I have tweaked it around 2017 and managed to run Windows 10 Mobile
It works at a quite basic smartphone level still. I have limited the phone to:
Windows 10 Phone Mobile
Version: 1511
OS build: 10.0.10586.107
Glance Screen: Works - completely.
Groove Music: Works - I listen to songs often.
WiFi: Works (I used Edge browser, Spotify - somehow it works partially)
Outlook Mail: Works.
Contacts: Works (I sometimes am having problem in deleting duplicate contacts, but that's some other issue I guess)
Calendar: Reminds me of Birthdays & Events, never used it more than that.
Telegram: Works
Here Maps, Here Drive: Works great!
Camera/Alarm: Works -just like they used to.
Calculator: Works - but it does not have currency conversion like Windows 10 for PC's have.
Gallery: Works and syncs, as of now.
Camera: Works! But is shi*ty, because it's Windows camera, I managed to skip installing Lumia Camera
SIM/SMS: Used to work, until, I messed up SIM Connector - now waiting to go home and work it out, after Corona lock-down eases in my place.
MMS: Might work, I never used MMS service.
News/Weather: Doesn't work! Open the app, it redirects to Windows Store - Windows Store says app already installed. This is never-ending loop. of sadness.
WhatsApp: It used to work before I went down to Windows Phone 8.1, then I can;t even download it from Windows Store. Looking for XAP file for it, just to read old conversations.
So, it is like - Very basic essential things actually still work.
I am actually looking to Install Android or Windows 10 (PC) or Ubuntu/some Linux.
Also, I have my WhatsApp backup - I don;t know what to do with it, as it is not usable with WhatsApp Android.
Thank you for passing by.
I actually upgraded from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile, to use Instagram and other latest app available for Windows 10 Mobile. But since, nothing works now, I am actually thinking of just giving it a factory reset.
It will then come back to Windows 8.1 Mobile (after few updates, if they still work)
Shall I downgrade to Windows 8.1 in Lumia 1020? It might give me access to apps like Lumia Camera, Here Maps, etc. but other apps I don't know.

That is exactly my question, I would like to reset the phone but I don't know what is working after that, somebody could help maybe? I am ready to loose spotify and vlc but it would not be good if I loose Onedrive with Onenote. I already know that email account exchange is working fine but it seems that onedrive and onenote comes with microsoft account.
You can get the Lumia Camera & Here Maps apps back, on the cost of OneNote.
In this reply, I had written like a whole story that happened when you started this thread. I saved those words away & this is the short version of what I've to say now:
You can get the Lumia Camera, Here Maps app back. That too on either W10M or WP8.1, ofcourse. But you've to compromise OneNote in both working cases.
When I saw your post and replied first, I was running W10M on my Lumia 1020. Right after that, I decided to downgrade to WP8.1, in hope for classic LUMIA experience back. :/
Because, at some point, I lost Lumia Camera, Here apps - because I did a HARD-RESET after upgrading to W10M, which I regret.
So, I used WDRT(Windows Device Recovery Tool) to reset my Lumia to Factory Settings having WP8.1. I got the apps back, they're working great.
Being on WP8.1 was hard for me, because of this unable to sign-in to Store thing. I decided to Upgrade back to W10M again, which I thought was not going to be successful.
But I still gave it a try and Wooohooo! I am now on W10M OS Build: 10.0.10586.107 (beyond this build Here Maps won't work, but OneNote might do)
Basically, in the last week, I managed to downgrade LUMIA 1020 to WP8.1 and back to W10M again, added with Lumia Camera, Here Maps, Here Drive, Glance Screen etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Before regretting and doing anything, you can always discuss here, as I suspect that some of apps that you're able to use now might not work afterwards just like OneNote.
so please don't blame me for any un-calculated steps you may take. I am more than willing to discuss things in detail, as much as I can.
~ Thanks
I got mine today with Windows 8.1. As I see it is not a good move to upgrade to Windows 10...
Win 10 on Lumia 1020
Chandigarh: I have Winternals and the other needed tools, but I have a question: When you installed Win 10 on your Lumia 1020, was it in May 2020? Did you follow the procedure in which you basically trick the phone into believing it's a different model using Regedit, or did you find an ISO or other file? I just bought an A-grade 1020 as a test phone to try Win 10 Mobile or other OS.
My main 1020 has a ton of apps, including several camera apps like Lumia Camera, Flat Camera, and others. Like many others, I went to the Store and downloaded a couple dozen apps before the store closed. Thank God I loaded TuneIn radio on it. I have a bunch of cool music sites as Icons, including a Polish Republic station that plays only Pink Floyd, with NO commercials. I won't mess with that phone. So the one I just bought is for play.
How do you like Win 10 Mobile?

Yes, John, it was indeed in May 2020. I followed this thread for the procedure : https://forum.xda-developers.com/windows-10-mobile/guide-win10-mobile-offline-update-t3527340
NOTE: If you read the procedure in the linked thread with care, you'll find that keyboard might have issues after upgrade (Depends upon region). I had a totally useless keyboard after updating to W10, but I followed further instructions on that and got my keyboard fixed.
NOTES 2 :
- Change your phone's information to Factory default names after you get to Win 10 Mobile Version 1511, OS Build 10.0.10586.107, as Here Maps, Here Drive are not supported after this version.
- Also thanks to MS, if you go for further upgrade build, you'll loose not only Here Maps but Maps from Microsoft won't work either, as maps don't even load due to incapable GPU in Lumia 1020!?
- After upgrade, don't update the Here Maps, Here Drive apps from store. Turn automatic updates OFF Or they'll stop working. I've experienced this earlier.

I limited my own Lumia to Win 10 Mobile Version 1511, OS Build 10.0.10586.107, so I can use Here Maps and Here Drive. I can access Store and download some rare apps but others cannot be downloaded as it needs latest Windows builds. For Online Music, I use Jio Saavn being from India. It runs ad-free compared to its Android version and serves to most of my music needs, including English songs as well.
In a nutshell, I liked my Lumia 1020, still use it for occasional photography and music. It used to be great until Nokia left & MS stepped in. Still not bad though!
I am actually trying to work on having Win10X installed on Lumia 1020, if it supports it! Fingers-crossed or I'll use it in my future project being a Mechanical Engineer.
Thanks!
I found that last night and it worked!
I loaded all of the files he listed, started the process, and went to bed. This morning I had a Windows 10 Lumia 1020 phone! And the Store works again, although not all apps are compatible or work. I'm glad I loaded a bunch onto my Win 8.1 phone before that store completely closed down.
It's very cool, and I think it's just as fast, but having just spent an hour or so playing with it, I have noticed some annoyances. Battery life does seem to be shorter, but we'll see after some discharge-recharge cycles. This is a refurbished phone, so I'm not sure how new the battery is. I replaced the one in my 8.1 phone several times until I found an actual Nokia one. DANGER WILL ROBINSON: there's an aftermarket battery on Amazon and eBay that claims to have a super long life. It has a white cover. It's crap! I installed one in my Win 8.1 1020, took the phone to the Florida Everglades, and the stupid battery crashed and died. Thank God I took my Pureview 808 as a backup.
Anyway, now I have another new toy to play with during this stupid pandemic. I think I'm going to love this site!

I just found that battery with the white cover on eBay. It's called the BV-5XW. I had it in my phone for less than a week.

OK, something crazy happened. I turned off Windows update but I mistakenly downloaded a couple maps for offline use for HERE Drive, and suddenly DRIVE didn't work. I got the canned "Not supported by this version of Windows" message. So I connected my phone back to my PC and decided to re-do the install that Hikari created, but it received another error message. And now WDRT wouldn't work with my phone, despite my rebooting efforts.
So I did a hard reset, and Windows 10 came back - BUT IT AN OLDER VERSION called LUMIA Windows 10, version 1451. The first one was 1551 (latest good version).
Here are some screenshots. The phone is MUCH faster on Windows 10. Even my wife agrees to that. And the Store works for a lot of apps, plus all the ones I owned downloaded to Lumia Windows 10 1451, and they work great.
Except ONE - Messaging. All the settings for SMS and MMS settings are there, but there's no app, and the one that my 8.1 phone has says it's not compatible with this version of Windows Mobile.
Does anyone have a workaround, like a 3rd party app?

I attached the wrong picture. Here's the SMS/MMS page. Everything except an APP!
This is probably a "dead thread", but here goes:
I bought TWO Lumia 1020's to play with in order to preserve my Win 8.1 phone. One is a "refurbished" model, and the other is one of those "Made in China" models. The build quality isn't bad, actually.
I've been running 1607 Anniversary on the refurbished one, and 1703 full install on the China model. It's hard to assess the battery life issue because of the differing ages of the phones. My original has an actual Nokia battery, but it's about 2 yrs old. I have no idea how old the refurbished one is, but I would guess that the China model battery is fairly new.
As Steve Litchfield points out in his All About Windows Phone page, 1607 is really all the further one should take the dual-core 1020. 1703 is a "reach". Both versions have access through the store to good turn-by-turn GPS programs, and there are other good apps and stations that you can use to replace MSN Sports and Weather with the 1607 version. If you use Shazam and TuneIn, those will be gone. The replacement for Shazam, Soundhound, has cool features but it isn't as quick to identify music as Shazam.
As soon as I was happy, I changed the registry back to a Lumia 1020 and rested on my laurels. But Microsoft never rests..........
About 20 minutes before the ball came down on New Year's eve, I noticed that I wasn't getting shelled with texts from friends and family members. I glanced down and had a conniption fit - all I saw was a black screen with white gears turning. Microsoft was installing 1703 "on the sly". There was no way it would be finished in time, so I popped out my SIM carrier (yes, while it was running) and popped it back into my Win 8 phone which was off. As soon as the "update" was finished, I checked to see if I had left the phone set to a 640XL, but all Reg entries and the ID said RM-877, Lumia 1020, etc. And a part B of 1703 was scheduled for the upcoming evening.
After playing with the "1703a" version, I was surprised how quick it was - a bit faster than 1607, and MUCH faster than the 1703 "full install".
It looks like the only way to completely eliminate subterfuge by Microsoft is to change the values in the Registry. The keys are easy to find using InterOps. But after I edit them, they go right back to what they were. So today I'm writing a few lines and I'll use the Import function in InterOps to see if that works. If it does, I'll post the text here.
Today, my two Win 10 Lumia 1020's were booted off my office Outlook email account because the phones still have a reference in the Registry that reads WP8. Or at least, that's what Outlook says. Both phones have 1703 installed.
Does anyone know the secret hiding spot in the Registry that refers to "WP8", if it actually exists?
I've combed through the Registry using InterOps to no avail.
Hi !
I have a Lumia 1020 64gb and I saw recently that it is now possible to have a root access with the possibility to install all the applications we want.
Somebody tried with Lumia 1020?
A 64GB 1020? Wow, those are as rare as Unicorns!
I assume you mean while retaining Windows 8.1? With Win 10 you can sideload pretty much everything including Win 8 apps like Shazam and even HERE Drive, but the duo-core processor runs too slow. I'm waiting for someone like Hikari to push Win 11 on a 1020, LOL.
I committed heresy and switched to the 950. The stills are very competitive, and the 950 has 4K video from which you can capture great stills. And the 950's hexacore CPU does a decent job with Win 10 .
Yes, I would like to keep win 8.1.
Yes, it is very rare. I don't want to brick it
It seems that it does not work but if there is a chance to add some apps, it will be very good, I don't want to push win 10 on the 1020.
I have the 950, but it is very disappointing. I have a 808 pureview, the 950 is not as good as these 2 phones for photographies. And It miss a processor a little bit more powerful to read a 1080p mkv video, so for multimedia I prefer an android phone or tablet.
I still have my 808 and my N8, but it's getting hard to find good batteries for the 808. I took my 808 to Waikiki in 2014 and took spectacular pictures with it. And I used it as a backup for my 1020 when the aftermarket battery that I had installed in my 1020 crashed and burned, 3 weeks after I installed it.
You could buy a cheap 32GB 1020 on eBay and experiment with that. I bought a couple, including a new Chinese-made one for $60.

Something like this is the missing link in my arsenal.
Has anyone purchased tested? What do you think?
Hi there, this looks interesting anyone using this device? would like to hear
a hand on report
btw where can we buy this device and price??
ive been researching this tablet for a few hours now and from what i can tell theres no market app...which wouldnt be so bad because you could download all the apks to your sd card, but theres also no file explorer which means that plan is moot. everything though, is a dream!
I purchased one of these little beauties with 2.1 on it. When running 2.1, the bluetooth, audio and gps are broke. Audio works but is very quiet, bluetooth and gps simply do not work. I used adb to install apps, most fc'd after install. There is a new ROM out for it that fixed most of the fc's, but did not fix bt or gps. When I contacted support, I was told that if i wanted to use gps I should install wince...
Otherwise, the device is very sexy, very fast and feels to be quite durable. If they can get the 3 issues listed above worked out, this thing will be awesome.
Well? Where is the update. Have you made any progress with the wisitech? Access to marketplace at this point?
Thanks for keeping us updated!

ViewSonic is releasing a 10.1-inch tablet that will dual boot Windows 7 and Android 1.6.
http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_new...nics-10-inch-tablet-boots-windows-and-android
My question is, why ONLY Android 1.6??? Android 2.x has been out for months and they can't have it integrated into this device? Bad decision in my opinion. Although the article does say ViewSonic has another tablet that has Android 2.2, it isn't one that dual boots. Just thought I'd share.
Witstec A81G
I just ordered the A81G (supposedly everything is working), with 2.2.
I ordered it because (in theory) it dual boots into WinCe and 2.2, GPS working in both operating systems, removable battery (most do not and most do not have very long battery life, makes the product virtually useless, as a mobile device) once the battery is dead) and a matte screen.
If all the above is true then it is one heck of a deal at $205, shipped (ordered it from Hotmid). It is it not then it will make a great paper weight.
The videos of the product on YouTube seemed very promising.
Once I get it (I was too cheap to pay for quicker shipping), around Jan 151011, I will post my review and indicate whether I accomplished the dual boot.
I even saw a video on line showing it with Multi-touch. Hmmm.
Problem with Market solved
This is the solution.
Android market setting
1) Press Home button
2) Click settings
3) Chose Applications / Manage applications
4) click Running TAB
5) Find Market program in the list and click
6) Click :
a. Clear cache
b. Force stop
7) Press back button On 81
8) Find Google Services Framework and click (Running TAB)
9) Click
a. Clear data (DELTE warning will appear. Click OK)
b. Force stop
10) Go back to Home page of A81
11) Try to Run Market
12) You should see new window with following message: An error occurred. Please try
again. (this is good message telling that all steps was done successfully)
13) Turn OFF device
14) Turn ON device
15) Make sure you have Internet connection (WiFi or other) and SD card is inserted
16) Run Market
Now its working fine.
Hey
The first (Android) smartphone with camera that can really compete with the digital cameras and no section for it?
Modding it would be great
Altek A14 Leo
Altek Leo Section
regarding the serious problems the Altek Leo has, as no google apps, not even market, no rooting published, no adobe flash, firefox will not install and so on,
a section would be useful for the distessed owners of this camera phone which
is more a fumble phone than a smart phone. Its advantages are a very good lens, an outstanding CCD chip, a xenon flash and professional camera software.
True, is buggy
I bought one actually and despite it being pretty buggy, I just absolutely love the camera.
Definitely needs some software love though:
1) Interface is pretty sluggish and 2.1 isn't helping, the latest android performance improvements would be nice.
2) Touch-screen is strangely inaccurate. Swype was a must for me.
3) Battery life is pretty bad (not certain how much a newer Android would help, but any amount of powersaving fixes would help).
4) Buttons/widgets to lock the screen (e.g. Extended Controls) don't work.
5) The camera button doesn't open the camera when the phone is locked (debatable I guess, but imo, the camera button should just open the camera, period).
6) Default alarm clock doesn't ring randomly.
7) Not to mention apps randomly crashing, strange animation bugs in the Album viewer, no google apps, terrible GPS, etc.
But despite those, I've managed to work my way round them and am in love with it.
Alex
I have one of these and I do like the quirkyness .
I would love to improve the experience by modding.
Quirkyness fits well
To continue the list (more than enough for a forum)
- Backups by Titanium, AVG or Nandroid do not work because i have no idea
how to root the Altek Leo.
- WLAN range is still very short and does not always an automatic reconnect.
- I could not manage to make any browser play flash files, but the moboplayer
plays flv files well.
- Apps like soundhound say the microphone is blocked.
About half of the apps i need are not available because they will not install
or they are exclusively available over google market and getting them from
file hosters seems a bit risky to me. Most of this problems seem to be caused
by the small software space of 120 MB for files and 83 MB for running
applications.
But i will keep the Altek Leo and use it because the camera prooved itself
as outstanding among mobile phones.
- I use the application stores Applanet, Amazone Appstore, Handango,
SlideMe SAM and the tools Memory Booster Lite, Android Tweak.
Does anyone discovered any other useful helpers for this half of an
ANDROID device ?
"We do not need any adobe flash, we have got a real xenon flash."
Where To Buy
Does anyone know where to pick up/order one of these units?
Here To Buy
Search at Ebay, you will need a Paypal account.
I bought mine from Wifigadget.
Eason of Yupitek provides International Customer Service,
have a look at the facebook pinwall.
Thanks for the tips! Really like Memory Booster and Swype.
If you're on a mac, the "missing sync" from markspace is well worth the buy - particularly given that there does not seem to be a way to add a Google account under accounts and sync - it's missing on my altek leo! Anyone elses too?
Also recommend "Lookout" if you're worried about virus from no easy way to get apks other than file sharing sites.
Despite the quirks, very happy with this all-in-one device - music player + phone + camera - 3 down to 1! Fantastic!
Vignette
Sidenote, 'Vignette' is the perfect app for this device.
It doesn't fix any of the quirkiness, but it's a photo manipulation tool which complements the fantastic camera perfectly.
You can take your pics and then touch them up making the phone a studio for all things photography.
You can purchase it from the AndAppStore.
By poor battery life, how many days do you get out of it?
root and market
Has anyone tried the Gingerbreak exploit? I heard it might work on older devices. Also, if you don't trust file sharing sites and want stuff from the market. You could try running an emulator and installing the Market on that, then sideloading the APKs. I haven't tried it myself yet, but it seems there are a lot of people doing this. Here's one HOWTO which is specific to Mac but I think it's prety much the same or at least you should be able to use the same system image. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1387830/how-to-install-android-market-app-on-the-emulator there are lots of other links if you google "android market emulator" I don't have the Leo yet because they're sold out in Taiwan, but I've got mine on order. I'm most interested whether the google apps work at all if they're sideloaded. I've just sort of bricked my older Cyanogen device. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Oh, here's a Windows specific link - http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/10004/accessing-android-market-from-android-sdk/
and be careful with Gingerbreak!
There's also UniversalAndRoot to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
and SuperOneClick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Poor battery-life
@rocky7st
It depends on usage. Light usage is ok. Any sort of medium/heavy usage won't get you through the day.
I bought it from an ebay seller which sent me 2 batteries which was helpful:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230614421067
It's is useful since it allows me to occasionally geek out with the camera, playing with apps or using the GPS (i.e. 2 hours straight) and and it'll completely run out of juice by late afternoon.
I usually wait till I get home to recharge it on those occasions, but it's been very useful to be able to switch to the backup battery if I'm out and about and I really need to use the phone.
@everyone_else
On the topic of side-loading apps, my gf has an Android phone with a market on it, so I use the "Astro" file manager which allows you to "Backup" the apks, and then I transfer them to my phone via email.
I've been unable to get my device to show up with adb, so not far enough to try SuperOneClick.
UniversalAndRoot says something like "unable to root"
Z4Root says "running root exploit" and does not progress..
That's bad news but good to know at the same time. Hopefully there will be a method soon. Still waiting on mine but I unbricked my older one. Seems to be an almost total lack of hands-on reviews (outside of a trade show) so I thought someone might be interested in this one. Also, I emailed the author to see whether and how he installed the Market app.
http://120x160.com/old-entries/216-hardware-review-altek-leo-a14-camera-phone
Cheers for the reply jackflap. Do you guys know anything about the Android 2.2 upgrade, I've heard Altek is meant to be releasing it next month.
Okay, I got SuperOneClick working so I have root. ADB worked in windows after installing the Altek software.
ADB in linux still cannot find the phone..
So I tried installing various vending.apk files but keep getting MISSING SHARED LIBRARY or out of date SDK.
@daktak I've been trying to develop for the Leo but have not been able to get ADB to work in windows. Where did you obtain the Altek software?
Hi All,
I am a complete noob here and non technical.
Recently bought an altek leo with the sole purpose of loading an app called Passport Photo Plus and using the device to create passport photopgraphs and to send by Bluetooth to a compatible printer.
We have been doing this on other android smartphones but wanted to use the altek due to its camera features.
It appears that our desired app is ony avaiable on Market.
Being non -technical we have tried and failed to find a way to install this app on our leo.
I'm sure there may be other apps available but we specifically want this one due to it's features.
Does anybody know if this can be done, and if so how? Can anybody point me in the right direction (in easy to understand non tech terms please!)
Would happily pay a small fee for succesful step by step instructions (not sure if I can post that here, if not please ignore / mods pls delete).
Many thanks in advance.
Hello,
back in September when I updated to Mango, i was able to change settings for podcasts I subscribed to via the phone itself. This included that the phone would automatically download new episodes via Wifi without the need of the Zune Software. (see the top section of this site: http://www.wingadgetnews.com/subscribe-podcasts-windows-phone-7/ )
I am now running version 7.10.8773.98 on my phone (Custom Nextgen+ ROM) and this setting has gone missing. Did Microsoft remove this option in later versions of Windows Phone? Is there some way I can get it back? I do not want to have to boot my PC and start the Zune software to sync my podcasts, I want my phone to do this on it's own like it used to to back in October.
So, I figured this out a while ago through intensive searching and trial, but I figured I post the sollution in this thread for future reference.
all that is needed is a registry change in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Zune\Settings
here you'll find a registry entry called "XuidLocale". For me, the value was DE-DE as I live in germany. I changed this to us-EN and the podcast settings came back.
After I reboot my phone, the value changes back to DE-DE, but the podcast settings are still accessible, so that's a good thing
I just upgraded to Tango 7.10.8773.98 (legit) as well as the .12220 firmware for my Lumia 800, and I seem to have lost these features as well. I tried searching for a solution here on the forums and this seemed to be the most relevant and helpful.
However, I can find neither the settings folder nor "XuidLocale" when going through my registries. Any help would be appreciated...
Edit: Or is this fix only for rooted/unlocked phones?
I've just upgraded to Tango and lost the ability to manage podcasts from the handset too. I thought this was a feature of low-end handsets, not my Lumia. As this is one of my primary uses of my phone it could be enough to drive me back to Android and Jellybean.

Yeah, makes sense. I misinterpreted OP's post.
Has anyone (non-US) retained their podcast settings after updating to Tango? Perhaps particularly someone from Sweden with a Lumia device? I got the advice to simply just master reset the phone and just re-sync everything again, but I don't really want to do so if it won't amount to anything.

I wiped when I installed (Zune wouldn't put Tango on so I flashed it using the Nokia care suite - Vodafone UK PAYG version same as my Mango). I have lost my podcast management abilities - I had them in Mango.
Has anyone managed to find the fix for this for non-unlocked devices?
I was able to subscribe to podcasts before on my Lumia 800 but as soon as I installed 12220 the options has gone.
Unfortunately, this happened to me too. Couldn't subscribe to new podcast feeds on the phone (although previously-added feeds still updated). There isn't a registry editor that works with my phone either.
As over-the-air podcast syncing is one of my most-used features, I have reverted back to a pre-Tango backup (using Zune). Everything works fine now, albeit on an older OS version.
Sounds like MS added a region check to Tango to make sure you're in a region that has podcasts in the Zune store before allowing you to manage them on your phone. I hope this gets fixed
I think you are out of luck. Unless MS decides to magically bring these features back, if you don't have the ability to edit the registry, you wont be able to manage podcasts on the device
Sorry.
On Tango it worked for me too.
Now i´m an wp7.8 and there it didn´t work
Any idea?

Now that the Windows 10 Insider Preview supports the one M8 I'm going to give it a shot. Will report back how it all works out etc.
First since the Windows Phone Recovery Tool (2.0.3) now supports it as well. I will take this chance to do a restore on the phone.
Since no RUU are available for T-Mobile M8 and the tool has a firmware package available I'm going to let it flash over the device. If i can locate the downloaded firmware if its in any usable .nbh file that would help everybody else. I like to believe many bugs can be caused by a bad flash and since there's no RUU you can't necessarily rule some out.
Issues that are not on articles that I've read.
A lot of UI inconsistencies. App images on the start screen and the apps list are blurry depending on the app. Wasted space, a lot of the UI isn't scaled properly.
The start sceen has the option to go with the old school layour. Two Regular Square tiles across or Three across. Well it stays at three across no matter which one you pick. I tried removing all tiles just to see if they would reset a cache or registry somewhere and allow the two across layout. That caused me to loose the start screen entirely. Power the device off or on i will only see the all Apps list and the start button takes you to the list.
The Store Beta app appears to be just a link in the start start screen if unpinned you will lose it. While the regular App store in the apps list takes you to the WP8.1 app store.
To get my Google account synced up I have to do it via the Peoples app or Outlook Mail. There is no option to add a Google account or anything of that nature in the Settings app.
The nav bar is ALWAYS there. Some UI elements will remain under it similar to the same bug on WP8.1
All the bing apps are just links to the install page in the Beta Store. The Music Preview, Video Preview apps are also just links to the Beta store. Once you install them the link becomes the actual app, but you lose that path to the Beta store if you unpinned it from the start screen.
If copying something to/from the device. If the display times out and transfer is interrupted.
The brightness slider if you simply tap to jump around the level the actual brightness will not change. You'll have to slide it. I've always found WP levels to be too high. So i had to slide it from 100 and progress slowly for the changes to take affect.
So download an HTC 8X RUU and removed the RUU_SIGNED and UEFI_signed 8X files and replacing them with the M8 files that the Windows Phone recovery Tool downloaded. The RUU.exe was able to recognize my device and the new files. The phone is currently being reflashed with those .nbh files.
Update: The RUU.exe from the 8X RUU worked. Similar flash like the Windows Phone Recovery Tool.
Used the Windows Insider app to enable W10 updates. Waiting for the updates to appear.
I was prompted for a WP8.1 update, then was presented with this after the install.
Edit* Got prompted for W10 update. Screen shot included
On windows 10. First thing, the proportions on everything seems off. I'm all for smaller text since first things i do on android is lower the dpi. It just doesn't look right.
Going to do a factory reset, just to erase any lingering user data that might cause issues.
Couldn't take screen shots.
What I did to get up to this point.
Using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool (and tested the RUU I uploaded) I made sure no stock updates came through.
Installed the Windows Insider app, which then got prompted for an update.
Once the first update was installed I ran the Windows Insider App again, The phone was automatically rebooted
Windows 10 update came up and installed.
Now performing a factory reset to have a clean Windows 10 to work with.
Keep up the good work! did the factory reset fix your DPI issues? Im an android m8 user, but if it were ever possible, I would install windows 10... always willing to try new stuff out
OP updated. Will spend the night out and see how it all goes down. It'll also give me a chance to test out how GPS and the new Maps app perform as well as Bluetooth.
Hope you're having luck with Windows 10. I just downgraded mine because I couldn't stand the amount of crashes that were consistently happening. You'd think the first thing they'd look into would be making sure the people app and contact related software worked before involving people in a beta test. I could understand bugs but I literally couldn't open the people app, and if I tried to search for a contact, the search would close. Its not even close to being a daily driver OS yet.

People app works fine on this end. I made sure to do a factory reset after the upgrade to W10 was done. Granted it is still technically an OS in beta there are an outstanding amount of issues for a build of 10080. What I've seen they have only just merged the underlying code from the Desktop branch. The universal apps have been touched up around the corners to make them work on smartphones, but user end of the experience is still a mess.
Some of the other things i've noticed.
Some apps continue to use a white or black colored font even when I change the theme. The Music Preview app for example. The text color remains white even after you switch to the light theme. So youre literally looking at a white screen playing music unless you switch back to the dark theme.
When attaching anything to a message if you chose to browse for your picture/video from the "This Device" or "Removal Disk D (sdcard)". When you go to actually select the picture nothing will happen. The picture wont get selected. Youll have to use the Photos option to use the separate app which most people will do anyways.
Text a contact whose number isn't in your Outlook contacts will remain as just a number even after syncing Google contacts which has the same saved. Threads where kept separate from each other with the Google Contact details in one thread and the other just the number. Only after saving the number to my Outlook account and linking both contacts (Google & Outlook) where the threads combined.
Maps turn by turn navigation will blend into any music you have playing. Compared to Google Maps which it would lower any audio being played and loudly tell you directions. The Maps app however will just keep all outgoing audio the same volume.
I had my fun on Windows 10 for over a week (closer to two weeks really). So much stuff messed up in day-to-day usage that I had to dial back to 8.1 for now.
I am on Verizon, the restore tool DOES NOT WORK on the Verizon version of the phone (Package not found error)! You must use ACDU and flash the rom yourself to go back to Windows 8.1!
On the bright side, even backups on Windows 10 are restoring on Windows 8.1.
The issues I experienced (almost all I believe to have have reported to Microsoft):
DPI issues and the option to change it being nonfunctional. (mentioned above because you'd have to be blind not to notice it right off the bat lol)
Dot View case is completely non-functional, although app still appears in Settings.
Changing theme from black to white and back again sometimes results in theme staying white on settings screen, but turning back to black on rest of setup.
Alarms do not migrate over to new alarm app in Windows 8.1, but old alarms will still go off(randomly)!
Emails notifications that were listed in the Action Center before migration do not disappear from Action Center after migration, they listed as a random registry value and must be cleared.
Count down timer will crash randomly when changing the hour
NBCNews app crashes on startup
Outlook will not migrate multiple Google accounts correctly. I had to remove both of my Google accounts (one for personal, one for work) and then readd them to get both of them to function. Also, Outlook cannot setup multiple accounts with different notification icons.
Adding accounts to Outlook is a pain in the ass (mentioned above)
Phone icon appears twice in apps list.
Phone randomly locks up after alarm, toast notification, or even incoming call goes off. You must eject the sim card to get the phone to reboot to access the phone again because the touch sensor will stop responding.
When trying to open attachments from Outlook, Project Spartan will open and give and error instead (with PDFs and Excel files anyway).
When browsing with Internet Explorer, if you try to use built in Bing, it will switch to Project Spartan.
Rendering issue with IE's address bar.
Project Spartan has so many issues, I won't even bother to list them all. Lots of issues with tabs and using the back button. Rendering is a huge improvement over IE, but the UI is a huge step back IMO.
When going back to the Start Screen after an extended length of time, the Start Screen must thaw. This phone has 2GBs of ram for Pete's sake! I don't expect it to behave like my Lumia 635!
Wi-fi switch in Wifi menu doesn't appear to have a red outline around it, only a switch.
Cortana no longer shows local news (I really liked that feature!)
Probably other issues, but I think I remembered most of them! I don't recommend trying this current build at all for ANYONE with an M8!
*edit* For anyone who wants to flash the Verizon rom on, the link to the rom is here. I have additional info on the process here along with a video.

Hi. I bought HTC One M8 for Windows mobile (T-Mobile US version) running WP 8.1 OS few days ago. Whenever I try to log into Microsoft account I get error code 0xFFFFFE70 saying 'We weren't able to activate your phone' with an advice to contact Microsoft support regarding error.
I have searched on-line for this error and have tried everything advised including correcting system date/time settings, soft/hard reset of phone, even reformatting the stock firmware with WDRT (Windows Device Recovery Tool) and also HTC custom tool. Nothing seems to resolve this error so far. Due to this I am unable to use windows store to download apps or log into my one drive on phone etc as each one of these requires Microsoft account login.
I was thinking maybe you can help me by providing me with latest windows 10 preview RUU for HTC M8 (T-Mobile). If you installed it on your M8 via WDRT (Windows Device Recovery Tool) then you can copy it from C:\ProgramData\HTC\Packages\Products (default directory for WDRT). Maybe Windows 10 preview would solve my problem.
how can i do this on the AT&T one?
Interested in upgrading to w10 with my Verizon One... Does it work right? I'm more concerned about going back to w8.1 in case I does not.

My experience with Windows 10 Mobile on the M8, prior to build .420 was more or less unpleasant. Battery drain was more than 8.1 (I even waited atleast 5 charge cycles to see if it changed), the bug after the upgrade caused if you have a passcode lock was still there (which means you have to reboot after the upgrade to be able to login), messaging would crash/hang sometimes, call quality for me was not so great, and sometimes I would get app freezes or other lockups where touch would not respond. I own the AT&T variant and I simply used the Windows Device Recovery tool to reset it back to Windows 8.1.
There is a way though using the interop tools found here on XDA to upgrade to the Redstone build. I have tested it on my Samsung ATIV SE without a sim card and so far so good for 1 day now, and I plan to update my M8 as well. If folks want I could report back how the Redstone build works with the M8?

Not trying to steal the OP steam at all, but in the event folks would like the info later below here it is:
Today with the Interop Tools installed on M8 with Win10 Mobile Release 1, I edited the registry to read NOKIA as the Manufacturer and RM-1104 which is the global version of the 950, as the Model Name. I then installed the update to 10.0.14372.0.
I had tested this formula on my Samsung ATIV SE with no issues prior...
After the Update: So far I am impressed. The Redstone build 10.0.14372.0 on my AT&T M8 installed just fine. It was a quick install compared to upgrading from 8.1 to 10 release 1. All the apps updated just fine. I edited the registry back to the original manufacturer/model name. Battery drain does not seem to be as much of a problem with this build on my M8, I was at about 67% and it recorded 1day 8hrs remaining from there, but I will check it again in a couple of days. I also have visual voicemail working
The 1 noted issue thus far is the front facing camera (if used) will crash the OS where it is at and cause it to reboot, but for now I can deal without the front facing camera.

Just wondering, is there a way to install Windows 10 on a 8.1 device now? They pulled the Insider support, so I was wondering. Thanks!
I no longer have my m8, but I have an Ativ SE from my VZ days. I was able to edit the registry about 2 weeks back on the Ativ to get the anniversary update installed. There are many tutorials for changing the proper keys on this site. It should still work.

Hey does anyone tried to flash a RUU file of a Windows 10 Mobile?? Probably somebody must have tried they way Mi4 worked!!! must search for Chinese sites.,,,
Does it work well for:
- text messages SMS/MMS
- Phone
- GPS
- eMails
- YouTube
- Internet
I Will only use this phone for that, and the camera of course, no games, no social networks.
What is better ? To stay with wp8.1 or to install wp10 in my case ?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

It can if you follow these steps: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lumia-1020/help/lumia-1020-updating-to-windows-10-t3531645
Mine runs the latest of W10. I think it's worth it, and everything works . Why have an old operating system? The 1020 has the RAM to easily run W10.

I´ve seen videos of the lumia 1020 running windows 10 and being slow. Also, they loose stereo recording in video. I am also worried about losing the special features in the camera, like iso, manual focus, shutter speed, etc. I´ve read that Lumia Camera app is not available for Win10.
hi
I'm stuck at the step "Windows box will pops of go to “MainOS > Windows > system32 > config” choose “SYSTEM” then click open" I can't open SYSTEM. could anyone help me? (It says that the file is in use)
I vote to stick with WP 8.1. Better contact management/groups. Better Live Tiles with Cortana. Calendar auto-completes location address. Better lock screen apps. W10M loses a lot of cool things from 8.1 that still work pretty well.
Where is the custom roms for lumia 1020? I can't find anything or some projects. Is it hard to make one build based on wp10 mixed with 8.1?
