After using several onscreen navbutton phones in the past and having this S8 for 5 days now, I see almost no reason as to why the 18.5:9 screen aspect ratio decision was made.
It would still have a big screen, probably close to the S7 Edge size.
The only thing I can think of is that Samsung is used to creating apps for 16:9 ratio screens because previous phones had physical navbuttons. Maybe they didn't want to have to mess with that and just put the navbuttons on the screen and increased the length to accommodate the extra buttons taking up space on the button; still allowing them to make 16:9 native apps. I just don't like it. It makes for an awkward Android experience, especially with unsupported apps.
I disagree. Based on the number of pre-orders alone for this phone, it will soon become one of the most popular android phones in use. As use increases, more companies will fit their formatting to the unusual aspect ratio. The fact that the G6 also has this aspect ratio (and yes, I know it's not exactly the same, but close enough) means that there will be more impetus for developers to accommodate the screen. I think this is a big step forward in the mobile phone industry, it just needs to take some time for the rest of the industry to catch up.

The preorders aren't an indication of the abnormal height of the phone, but the infinity screen itself. They could've kept it infinity just the same with 16:9.
Why do you think this is a big step forward? What purpose does the super tall phone serve in your opinion?

Disagree. This should be the standard much more comfortable than s7 edge. Not because of the edges but becaus3 of the slim side ratio. Would not buy another 16:9 phone ever again
I really don't know why people are *****ing about the aspect ratio. With modern Android you don't notice this at all because the developers know how to deal with constaints of interface elements. Now you can see one google news more. You have more space above the keyboard. List views have one more entry. Whats the problem with that? Maybe there are apps that are incompatible but I have yet to see one.
To be honest I've not encountered any issues worth talking about, related to elongated screen. If there is software that can take advantage of extra screen (and there will be more coming soon), great, if not there are bars on the screen just like if I had larger bezel (or like watching 4:3 program on my HDTV). Actually I have hard time telling where the screen ends and bezel starts. I was expecting to miss physical home button, but since it is now permanent part of the screen and it is still there, except invisible, it doesn't bother me at all. And benefits of longer screen are great: finally we can have 2 programs display properly on the screen at the same time, typing is much easier, with more text displayed, web pages show more, with less scrolling, most cinema movies are shot at 1.85:1, some are as wide 2.39:1 etc.
In my opinion.. the only issue with the weird aspect ratio is that it fools some people into thinking their screens are so much bigger than it actually is. The S8 for example has only 2% more screen area than a 16:9 5.5" screen while the S8+ has 17% more screen area. The regular S8 screen is also narrower than screen on iphone 7 plus.
If you are going from a 5.5" 16:9 ratio phone like the iphone 7plus.. the regular S8 WILL feel like a smaller screen in comparison.

You can keep the exact same slim side ratio and reduce the height of the S8 to get roughly the same size screen as the S7 Edge in a much smaller body. Not sure where you were going with that.
I'm actually quite happy with the screen.
the extra wide/tall screen helps create better immersion in 3D games, improves field of vision in VR, and compensates for the screenspace now lost to the onscreen buttons(or in my case, my physical keyboard)
the slimmer design also makes the phone more comfortable to hold, the S8 has the perfect width for me.

You made a few good points:
1. Multi-window works better
2. Bit more room to type
3. More webpage for scrolling less
While those are good, if I was given a decision I'd still take a shorter phone. I personally prioritize the size of the phone over many other things.
If this phone was released as 16:9 with a 5.5" screen (same as S7 Edge), it would be slightly larger than an iPhone 6/7. Which is insane because their screens are only 4.7". To me the iPhone is the perfect one-handed size phone with every other hardware being not so great.
The S7 was a 5.1" phone and the natural progression could've been to a 5.5" 16:9 phone in a smaller body than the S7 with the same size screen as S7E. I really think they went with 18.5:9 because of the apps. I bet you this screen would be 16:9 if you chopped off the navbar softkeys. Could be wrong though.
I'm really just nitpicking
I've actually enjoyed the taller screen. I went with the plus and am still able to function just as I was able to on the s7e. It gives you an option to expand apps that aren't already expanded to take full advantage of the screen, and watching video with bars on the side isn't a big deal to me, because as was said above that would be the bezels on an older s model phone and I prefer(love) the look of this one. An iphone may have the perfect ratio, but the resolution doesn't compare to these screens and that's what I'm looking for more than the ratio, just my opinion of course. That bixby button on the other hand...
I have used LG G3 for 2 years then after 1 week of Lg G4 usage found out its battery is thrash ordered myself a 2017 barcoded Samsung G935F.
7.0 Nougat update completed.
Pros:
Good battery endurance.
Does not overheat easily.
Thin and light.
Cons:
Impossible to type while laying in bed or armchair bcs there is no palmguard so you keep pressing home or back button during typing.
Camera isnt better than a g3 or g4 as quality wise.
Fingerprint does not work perfectly.
There is no sound volume slider in drop down menu this sucks as hell.
Most apps and websites are not edge screen compatible so you end up sliding page left or right to read.
Does not have hardware for remote controlling.
Flashlight isnt bright enough.
I am open to suggestions as long as they are meaningful.

Sorry but post lost credibility if ur trying to say a g3 or g4 camera is better then the S7..(laughing out loud)..I'm not a huge S7 fan either but the camera is lightyears ahead of a g3/4..

I found fingerprint sensor to work well as long as I set it up properly.(follow the instructions letter to letter and do not change the angle during setup)
Sound volume slider is always there for me or did I misunderstood you?? carrier firmware??
Not sure what you mean by not edge compatible. Website and apps work the same way as any flat screen with just a little distortion on the edge but doesn't affect any usability since it's still visible and readable.

Thank you. I have recorded (default settings, did not touch anything) my sister and dad next to sofa and with G4 and S7 in a row and then streamed video to UHD TV, both looked same except S7 was zoomed in so I disabled stabilizator in options and streamed again. It was same quality. Lights, colors everything.

Fingerprint reader is too fast to judge I guess, I had to re-apply adding finger process several times to make it working more properly.
When I surf the web, some websites' texts are starting from the very edge screen (left) so I can't read first letters of comments or titles. Not sure how to fix that or those websites need to fix it. This does not happen in apps like Youtube or Facebook, must be optimized already.
Sound slider it is shown when I use hardware sound buttons but I would love to see it also next to brightness slider when I drag down the top menu like in LG. I am not allowed to post an image url yet.
This model isn't customized by any carrier and more like an international unit. Only samsung apps are pre-installed.
I didn't know there was levels for brightness, I will check it out and thank you for that. Hope that level is auto applied also to Flashlight shortcut when I enable it.
My biggest problem is to be able to use phone while laying in bed, holding phone on air and typing, some of my hand have to touch hardware buttons and its not solved yet.
I think I need a case to have more space for holding phone on air and type properly.

I`m using this device for almost one year. I don`t have these isssues (specially regarding camera). I`m happy with this device.
+ for the volume slider in notifications! I have it on my ipad but I have to press a physical button on my phone.
I think he's not wrong on that camera part. Believe me I love this phone and its camera. I had a 6P and Note 4 before. Even though I was sure the S7 captured much better pics, lately when I compared 6P and S7, I found the 6P doing better at post processing with HDR mode. S7 oversharpens images and it looks quite horrible sometimes, specially portraits.
And about the clarity thing, yeah 12 megapixels vs 16 megapixels. It shows when zoomed in. But overall S7 camera is much better than other smartphones (taking in consideration video, low light, pro mode etc).
I think in daylight the G4 may take better pics cos of higher resolution (visible when viewed on a bigger screen). Not sure because haven't used a G4 before.
G4 pro mode doesn't compare with s7 edge...try take a pic at midnight with G4 In pro mode at 30s and one with s7 edge at 10s..see who takes it better...LG?

I have this phone for over one year now,its a great phone,but I would like to make my observation about the camera quality too:
its a great camera for scenes for sure, but for human faces, from a bit distance, will blow them out of proportion due to its large pixels letting in too much light in bright conditions.
And also I miss the volume control from the drop down menu without pressing the hardware keys.
everything else is great and I love it a lot.

Your cons are funny
1) It is possible, maybe you have small hands, that thing doesnt happens to me.
2) Camera is ok, comparing it to g3 is...idk it's silly.
3) If you set up 4x fingerprints 2x left 2x right, make sure you swipe it in all directions. Mine works much better than on marshmallow, 99% of the time.
4) In dropdown menu, you have ringtone, media, notifications and system tones. Where is a problem there?
5) I am using UC browser, no problems in web surfing.
6) IC port missing, the only one annoying thing for me, cant use it as a remote control sometimes.
7) You have free edge app where you can adjust level of flashlight.
The biggest problem for me is the battery after one year. It's capacity is much smaller, and SOT isn't as good when I bought it.

On the finger print sensor, I set both thumbs and both index fingers with multiple angles so I can unlock the phone without having to line up my fingers every time. Other than wet or dirty fingers I haven't had any issues at all. I'm even going to set my touch screen bike gloves as a finger print so I can unlock it when I ride too.

It's been like 5 days and I am getting used to the phone. I still don't have any case or alike.
I still have problem typing while on bed. It's not going to be solved without a case to stop my hand touching bottom of the phone while typing in air. My hands are big.
Camera, it has a good camera but in my 1st post I mentioned I recorded a video and then streamed it to TV and I didn't see any difference so it was based on that. I didn't see its worse or better, it felt the same output.
I still would love a volume slider in drop down menu without pressing hardware button. Helps alot if your phone is on table and during watching videos/playing games, you won't need to hold phone and press volume button. Also double tap to lock/unlock phone. I tried some apps but they felt like draining battery after giving them administrative permissions to monitor system.
Anyway, thanks again for your comments.
You had it for 5 days. Man you aren't allowed to speak anything, please.... Use Nova Launcher, standard launcher is annoying. There you can use double tap to lock the phone. And for using it in bed, you just don't know how to.

The s7 camera is decent but it's clearly optimised for low light with a 1.7 aperture where it is superb.
It's all about compromising and Samsung has probably quite rightly assumed that most folks will snap their sprogs and pets often in less than ideal conditions.
As an enthsiast I have taken some great shots and provided links before but I admit that 12mp on a fixed lens camera may be inadequate if you want to crop or print a little larger. Samsungs own S6 resolves better in good light thanks to 16 mp.
I haven't read up about the S8 camera yet but it uses algorithm to supposedly improve.
That's not enough for me so I see if the Note 8 brings something useful to the table (not just camera wise) to make me upgrade. If not its the next iphone or the S9.

There is an option to expand the screen its called "crop to fit" but it literally crops the video so you cant see descriptions captions or things at the bottom or the top of the video....missing content like this

There's no good way to scale or crop it. That's what we get because Samsung decided to go with a weird screen aspect ratio instead of making this phone a little wider. I wish it was wide enough to keep the ratio correct.

What are you talking about??? If the youtube video is 16:9 you can still watch it on a 18.5:9 screen. Same idea as watching a 4:3 video on a 16:9 screen. You aren't missing anything just because there are black bars on the side. Do you want your phone to show video in the sides that never even hit the camera sensor that filmed whatever video you are watching? You want something literally impossible.

If the note 8 is a 16:9 screen it wont completely fill up with 4:3 videos. on nooo!!! If you get a 2.4:1 home theater projector screen and try to watch a 16:9 video OMG all that money down the drain!!!! You can't fill your screen!!!
Come on. If you absolutely must watch 16:9 videos on your phone with no black bars then don't buy a phone that is clearly not 16:9.

You might as well stop buying Samsung flagships then, Samsung will keep using the taller screen ratio in the future too. And it's literally impossible to fill the entire 18.5:9 screen with a 16:9 video without either cropping the video or stretching it. Video is information, and new information cannot be generated like you are asking (how are you going to return back in time, to have the camera capture more image from the sides to fill the screen with? The camera did not capture more from the sides, meaning it's not possible to know what was there, the information is missing, thus making it impossible to fill the screen without stretching or cropping)
It's a none issue. The picture quality is so exceptional I don't care enough to worry about black bars
Moreover, if watching a common 2.4:1 movie (i.e. 21.6:9) on the 2.05:1 S8/+ display (i.e. 18.5:9), one can enjoy an almost full screen image using only a small cropping, without the upper and lower black bars...:good:

The cropping is cutting out informative info at the bottom of the vids I like to watch.

it is but it was also great on all my old phones. HD youtube can only look so good on screens this size anyways. It does seem better on the 8+ though. I wanted a larger viewing area. Legit question...If size disnt matter why did you go with the 8+ instead of normal 8?

I dont mind the Stretch. I prefer the stretch. However stretch view is not an option with the Youtube app. Youtube app is the only way to change the resolution to HD in full screen mode. Thats the whole point to screens like this is to watch HD stuff.
Thanks for the technical info but that is a bit over my head. I still dont really understand that. Its not absurd to buy a $900 device and expect it to play youtube vids full screen in HD.
The cropping is an issue because it literally cuts out some of the info listed at the bottom on the screen that is important to the vids I watch.
Also kind of defeats the whole purpose of an edgeless display and how the phone was advertised.

Nope, if they make it wider with the same tiny bezels, it's going to end up looking short and odd. Samsung isn't going back to the 16:9 aspect ratio, it's going to look old-fashioned to people that are used to the taller screen, now that Samsung has branded it as futuristic and great (Infinity display). And it's not an "issue", because it's just a way that screens work, different ratio screens have things cropped out or stretched out if you want to fill the whole screen.

Dont be a jerk... Calm down. Dont take it personally. Its a legit concern and question I have about enjoying my device. FOR MY NEEDS THAT I PAID MY MONEY FOR.
The bottom and top of the content of the vids I watch daily is cut off in crop to fit mode. Youtube app isnt offering stretch mode for some reason.
There is important info that i need to see for the vids i watch ussualy at the bottom or top of the screen.
It is not ridiculous to expect to watch HD vids full screen and not miss content. Are you kidding me??? You sound like a fan boy. Its a valid point.
I really like the phone other wise. But this very well could be a deal breaker for some. If Its not fof you great. You have no idea what I use my phone for or why I spent money on it.
Again you pay for a big HD screen to be able to use it fully.

Things come and go every device. I try not to get caught up in the branding or marketing.
Also I would guess the Note needs to be different size than the S8. Otherwise its just going to be a S8 with a pen and moved fingerprint scanner.
Guess we will see.

Also I would guess the Note needs to be different size than the S8. Otherwise its just going to be a S8 with a pen and moved fingerprint scanner.

Note 8 changes will be a 4K screen, fingerprint scanner embedded inside the screen, dual cameras, 6 gigs of RAM and of course an S-Pen. It's a half-year renovation, the general design will barely change, most likely a bit more square than the S8, but generally the same. The screen size will be the same or a tiny bit bigger than the S8+, this time changes are focusing more on specs than the screen size, that is already at the very edges of what is useful in the S8+. The Note 7 screen size increase over the S7 was minimal too. The Note 8 will also get a major software renovation like the Note 7 did, but thanks to XDA we will see that software in our devices most likely even before official release date of the phone, because the processor is the exact same
The annoying thing for me is when the next video plays I have to crop the screen again I don't know if there's a way to keep it full screen until you exit the YouTube app and when you go full screen straight away the ads go full screen but then the video seems to go black bars and you crop it again.
I never understood why people don't like the aspect ratio. The video would be the same size on another phone but there would just be bezels there instead. At least when I'm in other apps I get more real-estate instead of having just big black bars constantly there in the form of bezels

The Note 8 be about the same price as the S8+ right now, just like last year the Note 7 was about the price of the S7 Edge. And as software is a big selling point of the Note line, I don't feel bad at all getting an S-line device, thanks to XDA
To the average customer, a software refresh may be a big reason to buy a new device, but thanks to XDA, we will get complete software ports of the Note 8 over to the S8 quickly. These ports will also have very few bugs, because the specs are so similar, good example is how a bugless Note 7 ported ROM came to the S7 before the Note 7 actually went on sale
And take in mind that the Note 8 release date will most probably be later in the yearly cycle than last year so that the S8 can get a good run, because the S8 this year came later than S-line phones usually do. I don't find it worth waiting +5 months for those upgrades, when the price will be the same

I dont know if thats true. Especially if you're coming from a note. I wish I could get my old phone to power on to test this.
I do find the black bars or the white menu bar to be way more distracting than a bezel.

The bottom and top of the content of the vids I watch daily is cut off in crop to fit mode. Youtube app isnt offering stretch mode for some reason.
There is important info that i need to see for the vids i watch ussualy at the bottom or top of the screen.

All I knew was the hype and that blue whale commercial.
Didnt know it was a thing to make sure the phone was manufactured with certain porportions.
Thought being able to use the screen in HD and full screen would be a given.
I have no problem with stretching the screen from the aspect ratio. However that doesnt seem to be an option on most HD content.

Sounds like in the future you may want to research your purchases a little more carefully.
I do agree Id much rather have the traditional 16:9 ratio in a 6.2" size...would be much better for sure

I'm thinking about getting the Pixel 5 when it comes out and I'm curious about how good the developer option is for hiding the hole punch. Is it implemented well? Especially for landscape orientation. I figured since the Pixel 4a is similar to the Pixel 5 in that aspect I could just go off of the Pixel 4a experience.
What would be even better is if there was a way to add a toggle to the quick settings or at the very least a way to add a shortcut to the home screen that goes directly to that setting in developer options(not just to the main developer options. I don't mind the hole punch in portrait mode. It's in landscape mode when watching full screen videos and playing games that I want to be able to quickly hide the hole punch.

I don't think there's a toggle. The camera is a black circle, it hides with black wallpaper. As wide as this phone is, there are black bars on left and right watching video. I always use dark wallpaper, so hardly ever see it.

A lot of videos these days are recorded in wider than 16:9 and many movies are. Also games are full screen.
See the attached picture. That's from a review video of the Pixel 4a. Notice the that you can clearly see the big hole punch on a full screen video from YouTube. That's something I never want to see.
I know there's no toggle out of the box but I was curious if there was a custom solution that could give me something similar.

Don't meant to attack, but really? The hold punch isn't even that noticeable unless in the back of your head you're like "great my Netflix show is going to have this hole on the bottom corner". I've been using hole punch cut out phones now for the past two years or so and it doesn't bother me at all.

I came from a note 8 to the 4a, always wanted to try a Pixel.
Very happy with my choice. The hole punch is not even noticable to me even on the smaller screen.

System software
It really depends on the aspect ratio of the videos you are watching. This phone has a display aspect ratio of 2.166 or 19.5/9.
If you are watching a 16:9 video (1.77) then you'd expect about 9% on either side of the display to be black bars. This would bury the hole easily.
If you are watching a cinematic 1.85 video you'd have about 7% black bars, also enough to bury the hole.
If it's a 2:1 video, now you'll have a chunk of the hole cut out of the left edge of the video.
If it's a 2.37:1 video, you'll have black bars at the top and bottom about 4%. The bottom bar would not include the hole and you'd have a hole in the video.

I wish I could get it to show more. Netflix just cuts that side off completely. And the corners are straight up and down as opposed to the rounded corners on the opposite side. I have used fill screen with zoom youtube and don't mind the hole. At least we have a full screen in that app. Plex is the same way. No option to have full screen. The hole does not distract it bother me. Give me full screen

This mod is what you are looking for. But it has to be updated to work for 4a:

At the OS level, if your app is not declaring in some way that it is "hole punch / cutout compatible" then it doesn't report those pixels as available to the app. This would be done to ensure that apps do not unwittingly draw a necessary UI element right on top of the hole.

By default, in portrait mode with no special flags set, the status bar on a device with a cutout is resized to be at least as tall as the cutout, and your content displays in the area below. In landscape or fullscreen mode, your app window is letterboxed so that none of your content displays in the cutout area.

Presumably what the Magisk module does is force apps to behave in a cutout-allowed manner.
So the Netflix beta update today allows for full screen including the hole punch

Most phones with the cut out have an option. The Pixel 3 XL did. It just disables that part of the screen for all apps and shifts everything down.

It's absolutely noticable and it absolutely bothers me. Would you buy a TV with a several inch hole in the corner of the screen that blocks that part of the picture? Call me crazy but I'd actually like to see the entire image.

The wider aspect ratio is becoming increasingly more popular on YouTube. Take MKBHD for example. All his videos are a wider aspect ratio that takes up the entire screen.

Ideally no. Ideally I'd rather have no cutout at all but that's the way things are on any decent modern phone. With the black bar at least I wouldn't be losing part of the picture. I'd certainly take that black bar when the alternative is having obstructed content. Especially full screen apps and landscape where you might even lose access to certain UI controls.

Well it happens. I don't want to run into the problem just because the app developer didn't consider the possibility of a cutout. And then there is video which isn't a UI element but it's still content displayed to the screen that is being lost.

I don't understand your points. The Android is pure and Sony is providing monthly updates for 2-3 years!? The only thing holding me back is the price.

The version of Android on Sony phones isn't a pure Google software experience. It's not heavily modified but it is modified. I'm curious if you have a source that says anything about Sony proving updates for 2-3 years. Sony has a history of being very bad about updates and when it does provide updates the updates are very slow. Even worse than Samsung and LG. The Xperia 5 ii isn't even out yet and the OS is already out of date. Pixels will probably have a developer preview of Android 12 before the Xperia 5 ii even Android 11.

I'm torn between Pixel 7 and 7 Pro because of its size. I'm afraid I won't be able to get used to the 6.7" size and it will be awkwardly big. But the better camera, color, and design make this choice tough.
Is it comfortable to hold the 7 Pro? Isn't it frustratingly big? What are your thoughts on this?
I would appreciate any opinion about this which helps decide my dilemma.
What phone are you coming from? I went from the Pixel 3XL to the P7P and the P7P is about the same size. It is about the same with, but about a quarter inch taller. I think I have large hands, but I haven't really had an issue with the phone.
I'm coming from a Huawei P10 (5.1"), so it would be a big difference I don't have small hands either, so maybe I just have to get used to it.

With the bezels on the p10 it won't be a huge size difference in the device itself. I think you will really like the 7 Pro vs the 7.
Coming from a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra the p7p seems just right (i.e. smaller)
I prefer the size (and flat screen) of the 7, as for the camera being better, I'd say more flexible not better and so far the zoom is concerned it isn't a patch on what my P6P was, it is ok'ish as 5x but the colours are washed out and not consistant with 1x , it is pretty soft and it is disappointing at any zoom after that, the P6P zoom was very respectable even at 15X. Hopefully Google will work on it.
Having AF on the ultrawide is a negative for me as well, i am getting landscape shots where either the foreground or the background are out of focus depending on if there is something in the frame in the middle to near distance, they should have stuck with a fixed lens at a hyperfocal distance and not bothered with the macro IMHO.

The 6 and 7 pro's are *frustratingly SMALL*. They advertise a big screen, but they're incredibly NARROW screens and the display comes way too close to the edge of the phone without any bezels at all to hold onto it with.

Macro is a much more important aspect of the camera for me, I would choose the pro because of the macro rather than the zoom functions. I have no problem with the curved display, I really like the look of it. I agree ultrawide shouldn't be autofocus though.

Although I don't have the opportunity to test it myself, according to this site, you get much worse results when you crop the image:

I heard that the curve is quite subtle, wonder if it helps with the slipperiness because I usually don't put any case on my phone.
When you open it fully you can see just how horrible the Pixel 7 Pro shot is, weirdly you can see more detail in the wood grain on the P7 shot which would imply they got the focusing just out.
As for the slippiness of the phone you will need a case or a skin, it is slippier than a block of wet ice competing in the wet ice championship on national wet ice week.
I've just taken a photo of my avatar on my 1440p monitor at 1X with macro on and 5x (no macro) at as near the closest i could get while keeping focus both are uncropped and as they came off the camera.

I upgraded from a OnePlus 3. I was initially concerned about P7P's size but got used to it as most people suggest. I'm still not a fan of its proportions/width and the remote control look but it's one con—everything else about the phone has been a great experience.
