I'm surprised, nobody asked this already, at least I haven't found it:
Is there a way of flashing/upgrading my GT-S8500 phone a custom firmware/newer stock firmware using linux?
I know, s1 have to use multiloader for flashing, and it's windows only, but maybe some expert can tell me, if there's some alternative, even if it's harder/longer, way of reproducing what multiloader is doing, in linux. Thx in advance!

What exactly are you trying to do. I'm not familiar with the s1 and it's 'multiloader'. Are you referring to dual booting? Sorry if i'm missing your question completely. Some of us at ArcDatum do embedded systems research with ARM boards and have various multibooting devices booting anything from basic stock android stuff to gentoo/arch linux distros both separately and in dual booting environments. We use dev boards like the BeagleBoard and Pandaboards.
If you're trying to flash something weird onto ur phone though, chances are you can't or shouldn't. The only reason why it's safe for us to do it with the dev boards is because the System on a Chip is configured (by pulling specific pins high or low) to boot from the SD card and read the bootloader from there. In the case of most phones, you have locked bootloaders and no way to change that without risking destroying your boot process.
I'm trying to upgrade the factory system of my phone to a newer factory one, or to turkocfw (at first try, i'd be happy with the factory one).
Basically this is done through Kies -but thats windows only- or Multiloader -which is also windows only-, but my laptop has linux on it. I want to know, if there is a way, if I can manually do on linux, what kies and multiloader does on windows.

That sounds a bit odd..I still dont quite understand how linux comes into play here. All the phones I've had deliver official Samsung updates over the air. Have you tried upgrading directly from ur phone?

It should work under Wine or in a Virtual Machine. If you don't know what these are, you can easily Google them up. A basic concept
Also, for S8500 I would like to recommend http://darkforestgroup.com/forum/ a decent forum for all those older Samsung handsets.
Thats a good point. I havent used wine In a while. Although Id be careful of that, u kno, with the magic wine stuff that they pull off. Might cause some issues and risk ur phone

That's the operating system of my notebook. I want to use that computer for upgrading/flashing my phone.

Yes, but the function is 'defect by design', it is FUBAR, that function doesn't work (not only for me, it doesn't work for anyone using the same system on their phone (bada1.2)). I don't know, if it is working on bada 2.0, because I can't upgrade it.

It should, but looks like it doesn't. Wherever I've looked (looks like I cannot post outside links to prove my point, sorry :S), I've found the same advice: "Don't use Kies in a VM!"

So, the question remains the same, if anyone knows, how (exactly) multiloader works, and that working can be reproduced on linux (without multiloader)...
Or can this be achieved using Heimdall?

Ok, I can confirm it works using VirtualBox and Win7... No particular things to know, just follow the step as you would do on Windows !
Hello all. How are ya's today. I was wondering what I can do with my tablet. I bought it in haste really cause it was cheap. It is running android 4.0.4 The tablet itself is a HS-9DTB4 8gb hipstreet flare. It came rooted already so that is already done. What can I do with it. Can I upgrade the android or replace it with something. I would like to use it for business purposes but can't find the right apps for it I want. Any suggestions. ??

there could be lots of things you can do with a rooted device, problem is you need a custom recovery, (for restoration and backup purposes) generic tablets like your most of the time dont get one. you can go onto the play store and just type in root and there will be a huge number of apps you can use, read the desc to make sure you meet the requirements, lots of people screw up on that.
Where would I get a custom recovery...from the people that make the device or is there a place on the play store to get it for this device. "Read the Desc"...what is that. ?? As long as I don't brick the tablet I don't really care what I do to it. I called hipstreet and they say there are no more updates for this tablet at all so either I do something or I get to use what I have forever, lol. I don't wanna do that.

Custom recovery is cwm, clockworkmod, google and see if a version exists for your device. Rooting gives superuser permission which is extremely powerful, it removes all safeguards that prevent a user from destroying their system, downloading the wrong app or pushing a wrong option can instantly brick a device, which is why custom Recovery's exist, they back up the entire system not just /data but also /system and others. If you do not know what any of this means then i would suggest not messing with root access.
And read the desc means read the description, it is the mass of words under an app in the play store or app thread that outline use, require my a, what not to do and other good stuff

A Custom Recovery is not CWM, CWM is one of the few Custom recovery we have, but pretty much what he said, the only way you would get a recovery is for someone to make one witch i doubt anyone has for your specific tablet.

Cwm or twrp are the main ones, if someone says custom recovery most will say cwm, i was just trying to keep it relatively simple.

So basically there is nothing I can do with it unless someone has made an image specifically for this device, which I to doubt anyone will do. It's not a high end tablet so there is no reason for anyone to in the first place. Is there anyway to update the existing android o/s on it or no. ??

well from the thread it looks like it might be your device, you should ask the person if its for your model only, i searched and it seems like there is a few different ones. otherwise it looks like this is what you need if its for your tablet.
Now that's just for recovery right. ?? How do I find out what else I can load onto my tablet. ??

so if you get this recovery what your going to do is make a backup so you can always restore to when you do something wrong (for safe purposes) then apps that need root will let you use them, as for the update i doubt someone made a rom aswell, if theres no recovery theres no way people have made a rom for the tablet.

Correct. Regardless of anything else you can only run code that's compiled for that.machine ... and I assume you Microsoft doesn't compile Windows for that thing.
You may want to look for a different tablet that's a clone of yours. A lot of the cheap tablets share hardware designs and are identical inside.

So I should be looking more at what hardware it has in it to figure out a rom for it. ??
My question current is really about better understanding something in this whole Root and Linux learning adventure I think I am totally confused about.
Basically if no custom ROM exist or your device is not listed on the supported list of devices in any recovery program....
OR as in my case you want desperately to get the thing back running on it's true stock what do you do?

What is the best way to bring a device back to stock if there is no stock ROMs available and factory reset will not work?
On any device in this situation. Mostly I am hoping to have it explained in a way I can really finalize this confusing hole in my logic.
Like can a recovery program find it if it is still on the device somewhere and if not, why not?

I have a Wacom Cintiq Hybrid running Android 4.1 that is ( now ) rooted..
This is a very bad thing. The Real Stock ROM has palm rejection and all the drivers to make it work as a tool. So stock is the ideal but it is clearly not stock as my device supposedly came in the
box running 4.2 and with software and drivers to make it work properly with the pen. This has nothing. No software and the smallest amount of apps possible. Worse this is no custom ROM its on ( I think) as it would be the worst one ever and it was not rooted on arrival. I have no idea what happened before I got it. I may have made the mistake of rooting it really as I found out to my dismay there is no ROM support. So back to square one. I bought it ( very cheap for one of these ) "stuck and unable to go to the play store" and I did not realize until I got it, on a version of Android it was not meant for. Wacom is totally and woefully unhelpful in every way. They seem to want to quietly put this device behind them at the expense literally of their customers.

Hello & welcome to xda-assist,
If you rooted the device you changed the system /kernel in the process, if root is all you done you should be able to unroot by using the unroot option in your root management application, if you did further changes like deleting system apps and so on it gets more complex, the best and easiest way to get back to the original state would be a copy of the latest firmware.. If it doesn't exist you're somewhat out of luck, please refer to this link for further help & information..

Thanks for the reply. So no way to get the extract the original firmware? I don't wish to un-root. The device was set to a very sad state of affairs when I got it, unrooted, with something very unlike the stock firmware and factory date reset not helping at all. Persistently locked into a lower version of Android than it was not meant for and not running the drivers or software it would seem I need to make it function properly that came with the device.
Basically it lead to my curiosity of how one goes about extracting or mining the data that is stored somewhere on the device if all I did was root. Which is all I did.
It should still be there. Basically how do I get to it?
The link takes me back to the forums for help, however I found no help there after much searching before I asked here but thanks

The intended of xda-assist is to direct you to the most suitable board of xda, we do not solve issues for you or do technical support, please be patient, it often takes time for exotic devices / questions to be seen by someone who can give hints and answers..
Edit: but it's not that the original firmware is stored somewhere on the device by default where you can grab it and reinstall it..

Not sure how to put it, because I'm not trying to do anything illegal here, nor am I trying to make you guys cough up tips & tricks that could land you in jail in your respective countries, so just bear with me on a hypothetical level, OK?
My phone is a Leagoo T5c that shipped with Android 7.0. As such, it isn't de facto Project Treble compatible, and I shouldn't dream of flashing an AOSP GSI on it.
Thing is, I read this thread in the forum where it says explicitly that some devices can be made to be Treble compatible somehow.
If so, how? Does it involve rooting the device (suppose so, but I may be wrong), enlist it with Google someway or another, or something else?
I'm asking this because as some of you may know now, I would really like to upgrade the Android version on this phone, and have been hitting a brickwall for some time now, so before I completely ditch the idea and throw the phone away (not likely, because I don't have the money to buy another one at the moment), I want to make sure I've investigated all possible avenues.

You would have to have an unlocked bootloader TWRP for your device, without that, there is no point in trying to find a GSI for your device and there is no point in trying to find a way to force your device to be Treble compatible.

Hi, and thanks for taking the time!
I'm still trying to get the hang of it all, but my device is rooted, bootloader is unlocked in Settings, and TWRP is installed. What exactly would I need to do in TWRP to install a GSI on my phone?
Pardon me if I sound obtuse, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around how a rooted Android phone works and performs.

I'm not sure, in the link that you posted, it mentions making a device treble compatible and references a link that supposedly discusses the required files to flash. But when I went to that page, I didn't see anything that said anything about what needed to be flashed or modified to make a device compatible.

Same here. In his preamble, the author alludes to the fact that for devices that don't exactly fit Treble requirements, there ***would*** be a way to make them Treble-compatible anyhow, but it doesn't say how.
I'm also still unsure what GSI I should choose, anyway: the SoC on my phone is an x86_64 chip, but it supports arm64 instructions, as, I suppose, all Android-capable chipsets do, so if I were to try and flash a GSI, should I use one for x86_64, or the arm64 version?
I know there's a compatibility layer in most x86 chips for Android, but what would be the best choice, from an end-user standpoint?

If there are that many people looking for it and none have found it, then that is quite a bit of evidence that suggests it probably doesn't exist, otherwise, one of you would have found something.
If you are like the rest of us and use mobile devices all the time and you want to be able to flash, update, modify or repair the devices yourself then you need to invest in a PC whether you like it or not. If you do not want to invest in a PC then be prepared to not be able to do these kinds of things with your devices.

It may out there, who knows? It doesn't hurt to keep looking. As for making your own, as far as I know, there is no way to officially sign whatever you might create in order for it to flash at all via stock recovery, adb sideload or stock system update center.

Don't get hurt man. As we all own flagships and some of us doesn't like what rom we use. I've been reading threads after threads, doing things my own, sleepless nights, weeks!!!! At some point i thought lets just post something which is most searched.
Reaching Finish line sometimes looks tough but i believe maybe I can. And don't get offended about what i wrote because * Own A Pc * comment made me go nuts. Not everyone knows about xda. They search on YouTube. Instead of reading people chooses to listen. I know how it feels to actually reading what you wrote. Well i should be thankful to those who made me feel bad, cause if i Never felt bad, i would never had any clue about my true potential.

Can you unlock your bootloader or is it already unlocked? If either of these is yes then you have a chance if the stock source code for your device is available. If the stock source is available, you might be able to build your own custom recovery and custom ROMs. If the stock source code isn't available then true custom ROMs are out of the question but you could still try making your own modified stock ROMs using your stock ROM as a base then modifying it with elements from other devices that have your exact same CPU architecture/chipset. Or you could port stock ROMs from other similar devices with the same architecture/chipset using your device's stock ROM as a source to convert the other device's ROM to be compatible with your device. Mind you that any part of all of that will require an unlocked bootloader and TWRP custom recovery.

Well thank you. That was helpful. Everyone is trying almost same thing. I'm trying something which is unique and different. Can't say much. Publicly i don't post anything, or write. This post was worth it. Being only a listener is bad which i Realized.
