Issues with unlocked AT&T Note 20 on Google Fi - Next Steps? - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

For starters, my apologies if this is well-trodden territory. I've searched around the forums a bit, but I'm struggling a bit with the general vocabulary so I don't know if this has been addressed already, and I'm don't have the experience to judge whether these quick fixes or impossible asks.
I bought a SM-N968U Note 20 from a friend who bought it from an AT&T store. He kept the contract, I paid to have the phone unlocked, and I put my Google Fi SIM in it.
It's generally a good phone experience, but I'm having the following problems:
I can't make or receive phone calls, with or without wi-fi calling. Turning off a setting called "VoLTE" resolved it for a while, but the problem has recently returned.
There's no visual voicemail solution.
Despite no longer being on the AT&T network, AT&T still periodically pushes spammy casual games to my app drawer though an app called "Mobile Services Manager" that I haven't been able to disable.
Are these things that I could reasonably expect to fix without reflashing the firmware on my phone?
If not, are these things that I could reasonably expect to fix WITH reflashing the firmware on my phone?
And if not that, are these things that I could reasonably expect to fix by changing carriers?
Thanks in advance.

Missing a ton of incoming calls when using internet.

Ok so its bad enough I cant talk and surf or receive data messages or notifications while on the phone.... Had to get over that...lol
To make it worse some days I am not getting incoming calls!!!!! I will get voicemails and text from people saying they tried to call me. I noticed this happens a lot when I use the internet...Even does it sometimes without me using the internet. Even test called from a land line and sure enough it rang through the land line but my note 5 never rang.
Anyone else having this problem??????

I just came across this thread by chance. I am having the exact same problems though initially thought that my network provider (in the UK) made a mess of things when switching my number to a nano sim. It is simply the most annoying problem ever, though I have yet to identify whether this is a problem with the handset or the software. I regularly get messages stating that I have "X" amount of voicemails and have even conducted a similar test to yours with the same result. For the record my handset is the N920c (I'm assuming you have an american variant) which would hopefully imply that this is a software issue?
EDIT:
There are several ways to try and fix this, though so far I none have worked for me (particularly because of my variant of Note 5). It seems we are not the only ones who have had this problem - a quick google search indicates people with various phones on various networks over the course of the last 5 years have had this problem and the fixes are very generic:
- Try and disable VoLTE (Voice over LTE) under call settings - this seems to be the most common fix.
- Get a new nano sim from your service provider.
- Ask your provider to disconnect then reconnect your phone from their network.
- Disable the "do not disturb" option under settings (if there is one.).

I called sprint store ( my service provider)... they told me they never heard of that issue before with the note 5. Yes i have an American Samsung Note 5 through them.
They had me dial ##72786#.....This did some type of update to my phone and I think disconnect then reconnect my phone to their network.
Not sure if this did anything will have to wait and see. I did have to use my internet to show a store an online coupon....and for once it worked in a timely manner. So use to this phone never working when I need it to.
Overall my internet or phone does not work in the places I use to be able to use my Note 2 in everyday. Have no idea if its a Sprint or Samsung issue... Leaning towards Sprint. Just sick of it... If anyone else offered truly unlimited and unthrotled data I would switch in a second. I wouldn't even switch I would just stick sprint with the remainder of my contract and eventually get it removed from my credit report...
Some other issues I was having...
-random resets sometimes several times a day
-Erratic battery life...
-Would take AT LEAST 20-45 seconds before it would dial an outgoing call
The reset might of fixed these...

So it seems that getting your line disconnected/reconnected has also worked for several other people too; which correlates with your experience. Let me know how it has been performing since the reset/re-connection if you can. Whilst I haven't had the random resets I do get inconsistent battery life and I definitely still have the 20+ seconds dial out problem. Like I said, I have found threads were people have had the exact same problem over many years with different phones/providers which leads me to believe it has something to do with the way companies set-up a new phone line for customers.

Did not work still missing a ton of incoming calls. Important business calls at that..
I have the same exact problem. I am leaning towards samsung for this. My wife's note 2 is always ringing and my note 4 and 5 is right next to it and doesn't ring when I try calling.

I have the American variant of the note 5 for sprint & never had that problem & my phone is rooted running moar rom v1.3
Im having issues too with signal drops, is like samsung doesnt recognize quick when 4g switches to 3g a 2g and it freezes on 4g not letting me watch anything until it switches to 3g and everything starts running again...in some cases it will just drop all data..i called and they did all they can do and still having the issues...anyone know how to end lease returning phones brand new and not having to pay full price of the phones??

Exactly. Been saying in every thread how my Note 2 never would do this. Missing IMPORTANT calls is not an upgrade.

I am in the same boat with you I want out of this contract and lease. Been on the phone with tech for hours. Been given the run around at the store....Only for them to waste my time. Yet I'm still on the hook every month for a high priced plan, lease fee, and the $200 deposit for the "upgrade". This has caused me lost money business wise and missed opportunities socially as a single active person. Really don't see how they can keep me in this contract at this point. To the point where I'm ready to walk away.
What can we do? This is not right. I have also lost business calls. It is not only sprint. ..Verizon customers have the same issue.

I'm at a loss too. I don't know what to do. Who has the time in their day to spend hours on the phone or go into the store during my working hours several times to get nothing solved. My next move is to just walk away from my contract with the phone and hope i can get it unlocked onto Metro PCS because they are the only other unlimited data that doesn't bottle neck data speed.
Wow it's got to be the device than if Verizon is having the issue too. Sprint store claims that everyone loves the note 5 and they have never had this problem. Let me know what you plan on doing to please.

Using my G4 Plus on Verizon -- observations -- comments on HD Voice

This is my first time back in the world of Android use (as a daily driver) since 2013. I used to be a custom ROM-aholic, but now I just appreciate Android for what it is a mature OS that offers more flexibility than IOS. I wanted to buy a phone outright. And although they have more minuses than other carriers, I wanted to stay with Verizon.
I don't play games on my phone. The only time I ever found it to be choppy was when I used an app, albeit one that is actively updated, that did not play well with my phone. Headset Button Controller either doesn't seem to work with 6.0 or has issues with Moto phones. . It always did a nice job of playing non-google audio apps when then screen was locked. My all-time indespensible Android app is Dogg Catcher (yes, I am podcast nerd). I started having weird freezes on my G4 Plus when using the Headset BC app, especially when unlocking. Once I removed the app, the problems seemed to go away. Setting Dogg Catcher to stay alive seems to fix my problem.
One issue I have is with the VoLTE or what Verizon calls Advanced calling (a subset of a feature Verizon calls HD voice). Apparently, the phone supports VoLTE out of the box. I looked into the chipset specs. However, it seems that Verizon uses a non-standard implementation of HD Voice. Is that correct? I do not see Advanced Calling in my settings menu. I decided to try an ATT sim for kicks. I was able to get LTE (I live in an area with a strong ATT LTE signal). However when I went to make calls -- my phone dropped down to "H" -- 3G -- allowing calls and data. Yes, I know that ATT offers 3G calling / data simultaneously and verizon doesn't.
I talked to two senior level verizon technical service reps this week. Both essentially told me that every carrier implements HD Voice a little differently. The XT1644 phone registers in Verizon's database however, they are not showing that it supports HD Voice. I tried to explain to them that unlocked phones like the Moto X Pure, Nexus 5, and this one -- will not support the fullness of HD Voice, but can set to allow advanced calling. They told me that this wasn't available on their system yet for this model.
For some of you non-US G4 / G4 Plus users -- have you gotten VoLTE working yet? Will it really take a collaboration between Moto and major carriers as I was told?
I have Verizon. The phone supports and does indeed work on Verizon VoLTE. Settings > More > Cellular Networks > Enhanced 4G LTE Mode. Should be on by default. Works fine for me, allows me to call and use data over LTE at the same time.
AT&T does not support VoLTE on non-AT&T phones, so your calls will always fall back to 2G/3G.
At this time, yes VoLTE does depend on a collaboration between the carrier and the OEM. Hopefully that doesn't remain the case.

It was a huge fiasco for me with Verizon this week. One CSR told me that I needed a new SIM to get this feature. Local corporate Verizon store would not give me a sim because I was not adding a feature to my account and I wasn't buying anything. I end up talking to two senior level TSR representatives. One didn't really want to help me. The other one said she would submit a request to the "DSM" ( I may be spelling it wrong) department to have this feature turned on. She was supposed to call me back Friday and did not.
I am not wanting this for kicks, I can use this feature in my work. I tried the feature in Settings >> More >> and it does not show up.
Previously, I was using the 2015 (prepay) Moto E on my post pay account. That phone does not support voLTE. I am using the same SIM now. Verizon would not give me a SIM at _____ corp. store. I may go to another corp store if it will make a difference. Also, I cannot add HD voice / advanced calling online in My Verizon for this line.

Congrats on getting everything working!
I really wanted to US pre-order the G4 Plus 64 GB version and wanted to grab one on release day. I'm seeing way to many issues on connectivity, especially new customers. Verizon and AT&T would be new accounts for me. The issue of only a corporate store can hook up the phone with the rep placing the sim into a demo phone and things might work in a day or so by Moto rep on their main forum. For a $300 phone and a new service, case, screen protector that are all musts. They need to get their issues fixed. It wasn't a surprise this phone was coming out. I've been dealing with a junk no service at home scenario for 4 weeks now waiting on the G4 Plus. I work 12 hour shifts 3rd shift and I can't really find time to drive around back and forth and hope and pray a rep can do some twists and turns with a sim sadly

This is an issue with Verizon, not with the phone. There isn't much Motorola can do about it besides get mad at Verizon.
There aren't any connectivity issues, the issue is rather with Verizon activating a new SIM card in the device. The workaround is not restricted to corporate stores, but corporate stores do give SIMs for free, while 3rd party authorized retailers make you pay for SIMs. If you're signing up for new service anyway, there's no need to drive around back and forth, just do it all in one go.

I know the whole situation and all the options as you basically just re-worded what I said in a few sentences. I've been on the official Moto forums. Not everybody has a working g4 or g4 plus phone right now. It doesn't matter if the phone working on Verizon is a Motorola issure or a Verizon issue. You still can't order a phone and pop in a sim card with a new account and have a working phone. I haven't had to go to a cell phone store to get a phone working in 9 or 10 years maybe longer. Even from memory when the Samsung Blackjack, Moto Razr and 09 IPhone (3g or 3gs can't remember) was plug and play. 2016 buying a phone and having issues from day 1 can't be tolerated from me or anyone else. All these manufacturers, companies, etc are getting clumsy and lazy. Especially the last 2 years. There was a time you could buy a phone and it have no bugs whatsoever. I've owned many phones like this. Maybe 6-12 months issues start to happen. Everything is rushed, From planning to parts to google OS to the manufacturer to the provider. Something seems to always be incomplete. Like lets release 5.0 with a whole bunch of issues so we can get some money rolling in and just release a update when we can. Connectivity issue to me is the phone not connected. Doesn't matter if its a full moon the cause of it. I can't go to Sprint or T-Mobile because the service at home/work is minimal. Verizon is the king in my city and at&t second but at&t pre-paid doesn't have options like there post paid (wifi calling, volte, etc)

The issue is not with Motorola, it's totally and completely an issue with Verizon's system. This issue affects any non-approved phone you bring to Verizon, not just the G4. You should really direct your complaints to Verizon, post on Verizon forums, etc. Motorola can't do anything about it, as they do not have access to Verizon's activation system.

Does the mobile hotspot work out the box for folks with unlimited data or does it require rooting to disable the carrier check?

How was the problem solved? Having the similar issues.

Lost Signal (Verizon)

Earlier today I was attempting to switch to Textra as my new texting app, but had issues getting MMS to come through, so I followed some steps to attempt and change the APN for my phone. Somewhere while doing this and rebooting a few times I lost signal on my phone and couldn't get it back. I flashed a new ROM (viper) and the signal came back for a while, but then the phone rebooted to finish an update and I lost it again (so I'm pretty sure its not my sim card).
I am able to get the signal to come back for about 3 seconds every time I toggle airplane mode. I'm not sure why this is, maybe its not actually connecting? Any ideas what to do to fix this issue? I tried a safe reboot through Viper but still had the issue so it doesn't seem to be any apps interfering or anything like that.
Found a bit of a workaround that does something...
Went into the hidden phone info settings and set preferred network to LTE/CDMA (or LTE only, both worked). This allows me to use LTE for loading websites and apps and stuff but texting and calling do not work.

Same issue. Seems to be the same problem that's been under discussion for months. Verizon just immediately blames it on the device (despite the fact that they can't explain why it worked fine a week ago or why I still get data). My solution is to just switch to t-mobile. I'll be saving myself $30-40, getting unlimited (instead of 6GB) and a network that works fully. Just waiting for my sims to arrive. I know it's not really a solution but Verizon seems to be completely unwilling to even acknowledge the issue let alone fix it. Problems seems to exist on other BYOD phones as well so it's debatable whether they're just incompetent or actively blocking devices they don't sell.

FYI, the tldr of that thread is that no fix or root cause is known, but it's happening to a seemingly significant number of people. Pretty much everyone gave up trying to use the U11 on Verizon after having the issue by either switching phones or carriers. With one or two getting a replacement U11 and claiming that it work, for now at least. The issue seems isolated to only Verizon.

[F.Y.I.] Having trouble activating visual voicemail? Try this.

So I'm on MetroPCS and was experiencing an issue I'd like to share. When loading the MetroPCS visual voicemail app, I noticed when it first loads to activate is was taking forever to do so. This finally ended in a notification that was something like, "We're experiencing technical difficulties in activating your phone for visual voicemail. Please try again later". I had a feeling it wasn't actually "technical difficulties" so I started seeking out the issue. In most modern dialers; google, true phone (the one I was using), oneplus dialer, there is a check box for visual voicemail right from within the settings of these phone apps themselves. It is by default, checked. As long as this option is checked, my MetroPCS voicemail app would not activate. Uncheck it and... Voila! Instantly activated. I am unsure if once activated, that switch can be turned back on, but I really don't mind having to use the official app on my phone. I have heard of issues just like this on other carriers -particularly when a B.Y.O.D. device is involved. This may be helpful to more than just OnePlus users but I'm writing this as an F.Y.I. to maybe help someone with the same issue I had. If I helped you, please hit the thanks button.

Hi, I have a OnePlus 3 and I'm looking for a new carrier. Switching from Mint, with which visual voicemail never worked, and that was a major pain.
Was wondering whether you could confirm that it has continued to work on MetroPCS through new firmware releases and also if you could let me know what model OnePlus you have? I saw a lot of comments on the OnePlus forums saying that there have been issues with at least the 5T and 6 Oreo builds. I just know I'm going to go in the store and they're going to say yes of course it works with your phone but then it won't...
Thanks for your help!

Certainly. I have a one plus 6 a6003 mirror black with 128gb storage. Everything works perfectly including the newest Oreo update. I have yet to try pie since it's still in beta. Calling over volte and wifi works. As does wifi messaging. I do recommend everyone who's on metro, use TMobile apn's, however. Metro (TMobile) continues to have issues inside buildings in rural areas as most of band 66 and 71 are located in or near cities. But having the ability to be on wifi for calls and texts alleviates the pain. If you're wanting a new device and don't mind the lack of a headphone jack, consider waiting for the 6t. It should have all of what the 6 has plus an in screen fingerprint reader, wireless charging and larger battery. Coming in the next month or so. Good luck!
Hey thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly! I think I MetroPCS is the way to go. T-Mobile is by far the best carrier in my city, and I had Mint (also T-mobile) but the customer support was atrocious and things like visual voicemail that I really liked when I had a Nexus through project fi just didn't work. I'll head down to the store today and sign up.
Thanks again.

Not a problem. I know sometimes people are waiting on a response to take action. Glad I could help. As for metro, comparing to other mvnos: 1. They have actual stores you can go into for help if needed. 2. They are actually owned by TMobile themselves so least likely to go away. 3. Because TMobile owns them, they usually have the best deal you can get. A piece of advice; if you already have a phone and are planning to use the Sim from that phone in your new device, you'll need the IMEI number which is usually on the back or in the battery compartment of the device. It's also under settings>about phone>status>IMEI information. If you have your current phone and activate on metro then later decide to get a one plus 6 or 6t and plan to take your sim out of your current phone for use in your new op6, going into metro to have them do it results in a $10 charge. Instead, call up metro and DO NOT use the automated system. It will disconnect you. Instead talk to an agent and tell them you need to switch phones and are using the old sim. They will do the transfer for free!

SM-G970U Refuses to Work on Carrier Network

So, I have an S10e (SM-G970U) that was bought from Verizon a while back. The phone was set up on a Verizon post-paid plan, but was later switched to prepaid. The phone worked fine for months, but about a week ago, the phone randomly stopped making and receiving calls, texts, and the ability to use mobile data. It was taken to Verizon, and they tried "all they could" in their words, which included a new SIM card, resetting network settings, and eventually a factory reset from settings. Nothing seemed to work, and they gave up, claiming it "seemed like a bad antenna." They did call their "tech support" who claimed the most recent Android 11 update supposedly caused an issue with mobile network connection with the Verizon S10e devices, which I haven't heard of, but didn't know. He claimed a reset would fix it.
Since none of that fixed it, it was taken to a shop to be inspected. They claim the phone has nothing wrong with it. So, that, in theory, rules hardware issues out. Their only claim was that when an AT&T SIM was inserted, it was able to connect to the network, but never tried to make any calls due to the SIM not being activated. I assume this is due to someone trying to "help" inserting an activated AT&T SIM into the slot when testing, which I assume ended up installing the carrier branded version of the firmware. They gave a couple possible reasons, but neither seemed to make sense.
Since it had the AT&T bloatware and was working with only AT&T SIMs, I decided to flash both the VZW G970U firmware (the earliest version I could to ensure the supposed "issue" from Verizon support wasn't a problem) and the G970U1 firmware. Both firmware flashes have seemed to have done nothing, as the phone is still having the issue. Most times, it will connect to the Verizon network, but the signal seems to rise and fall quickly (like the bars going from 5 to 1 to 3).. Still no calls, texts, or data, though. I have no idea what's going on, at this point, honestly. Any ideas?

If the people it was taken to were competent and did their jobs correctly (one of the best around, according to reviews and carrier recommendation), their diagnostic results show no hardware damage to the phone. Then again, their explanation for the problem was that it had been locked to ATT network (a Verizon bought phone that never had any affiliation with another carrier, aside from Verizon and a month-long stint with Straight Talk). Some idiot she knows that used to work for a Verizon retailer popped his ATT SIM in there, and it flashed ATT firmware.. Their POSSIBLE solution was to try and have it network unlocked from ATT. As we know, though, the IMEI obviously did not change, and the process of confirming the identifier is done on the mobile network level. Therefore, flashing a different carrier's firmware won't do much (permanently), aside from changing the boot screen and bloatware apps. We even tried to explain to the guy that the ATT SIM had never been popped in until after the problem began, as there was no reason to beforehand. I also mentioned I had flashed firmware multiple times before I ever came to him, to no avail. I should've pushed harder, but I had been out all day, frustrated and ready to go home.
It's been over a month since that issue began, and I haven't thought much of it lately.. We've since found her a new phone (and stowed the other one in a drawer). Those guys did blurt some moronic statements.. In hindsight, I'm not too sure I should trust their judgement after hearing what I did. Maybe it was an antenna issue or otherwise hardware, but I sort of assumed if anyone can happen to keep a repair shop open, they'd at least be able to complete the simple tasks fairly easy. I don't know. I'm not paying another repair shop to find out, though.
I had a very similar problem where my phone would just randomly lose all connection for about a minute, then it would reconnect I would start doing whatever I was and it would do it again and this one on for months. I took it to AT&t and they told me to replace the SIM which I did and it didn't work. after a couple updates it fixed itself.
