Using my G4 Plus on Verizon -- observations -- comments on HD Voice - Moto G4 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

This is my first time back in the world of Android use (as a daily driver) since 2013. I used to be a custom ROM-aholic, but now I just appreciate Android for what it is a mature OS that offers more flexibility than IOS. I wanted to buy a phone outright. And although they have more minuses than other carriers, I wanted to stay with Verizon.
I don't play games on my phone. The only time I ever found it to be choppy was when I used an app, albeit one that is actively updated, that did not play well with my phone. Headset Button Controller either doesn't seem to work with 6.0 or has issues with Moto phones. . It always did a nice job of playing non-google audio apps when then screen was locked. My all-time indespensible Android app is Dogg Catcher (yes, I am podcast nerd). I started having weird freezes on my G4 Plus when using the Headset BC app, especially when unlocking. Once I removed the app, the problems seemed to go away. Setting Dogg Catcher to stay alive seems to fix my problem.
One issue I have is with the VoLTE or what Verizon calls Advanced calling (a subset of a feature Verizon calls HD voice). Apparently, the phone supports VoLTE out of the box. I looked into the chipset specs. However, it seems that Verizon uses a non-standard implementation of HD Voice. Is that correct? I do not see Advanced Calling in my settings menu. I decided to try an ATT sim for kicks. I was able to get LTE (I live in an area with a strong ATT LTE signal). However when I went to make calls -- my phone dropped down to "H" -- 3G -- allowing calls and data. Yes, I know that ATT offers 3G calling / data simultaneously and verizon doesn't.
I talked to two senior level verizon technical service reps this week. Both essentially told me that every carrier implements HD Voice a little differently. The XT1644 phone registers in Verizon's database however, they are not showing that it supports HD Voice. I tried to explain to them that unlocked phones like the Moto X Pure, Nexus 5, and this one -- will not support the fullness of HD Voice, but can set to allow advanced calling. They told me that this wasn't available on their system yet for this model.
For some of you non-US G4 / G4 Plus users -- have you gotten VoLTE working yet? Will it really take a collaboration between Moto and major carriers as I was told?

I have Verizon. The phone supports and does indeed work on Verizon VoLTE. Settings > More > Cellular Networks > Enhanced 4G LTE Mode. Should be on by default. Works fine for me, allows me to call and use data over LTE at the same time.
AT&T does not support VoLTE on non-AT&T phones, so your calls will always fall back to 2G/3G.
At this time, yes VoLTE does depend on a collaboration between the carrier and the OEM. Hopefully that doesn't remain the case.

It was a huge fiasco for me with Verizon this week. One CSR told me that I needed a new SIM to get this feature. Local corporate Verizon store would not give me a sim because I was not adding a feature to my account and I wasn't buying anything. I end up talking to two senior level TSR representatives. One didn't really want to help me. The other one said she would submit a request to the "DSM" ( I may be spelling it wrong) department to have this feature turned on. She was supposed to call me back Friday and did not.
I am not wanting this for kicks, I can use this feature in my work. I tried the feature in Settings >> More >> and it does not show up.
Previously, I was using the 2015 (prepay) Moto E on my post pay account. That phone does not support voLTE. I am using the same SIM now. Verizon would not give me a SIM at _____ corp. store. I may go to another corp store if it will make a difference. Also, I cannot add HD voice / advanced calling online in My Verizon for this line.

I will also add that for being treated so rudely this week, Verizon did give me a $100 bill credit, but I still have not resolve the issue at the heart of my frustration.

As of Thursday morning -- I was not able to add the feature HD Voice to my account. Today I am. Problem solved. Phew!!!

Yeah, unfortunately not all CSRs are knowledgeable. Easier to turn to the Internet to look for help lol
Congrats on getting everything working!

I really wanted to US pre-order the G4 Plus 64 GB version and wanted to grab one on release day. I'm seeing way to many issues on connectivity, especially new customers. Verizon and AT&T would be new accounts for me. The issue of only a corporate store can hook up the phone with the rep placing the sim into a demo phone and things might work in a day or so by Moto rep on their main forum. For a $300 phone and a new service, case, screen protector that are all musts. They need to get their issues fixed. It wasn't a surprise this phone was coming out. I've been dealing with a junk no service at home scenario for 4 weeks now waiting on the G4 Plus. I work 12 hour shifts 3rd shift and I can't really find time to drive around back and forth and hope and pray a rep can do some twists and turns with a sim sadly

This is an issue with Verizon, not with the phone. There isn't much Motorola can do about it besides get mad at Verizon.
There aren't any connectivity issues, the issue is rather with Verizon activating a new SIM card in the device. The workaround is not restricted to corporate stores, but corporate stores do give SIMs for free, while 3rd party authorized retailers make you pay for SIMs. If you're signing up for new service anyway, there's no need to drive around back and forth, just do it all in one go.

I know the whole situation and all the options as you basically just re-worded what I said in a few sentences. I've been on the official Moto forums. Not everybody has a working g4 or g4 plus phone right now. It doesn't matter if the phone working on Verizon is a Motorola issure or a Verizon issue. You still can't order a phone and pop in a sim card with a new account and have a working phone. I haven't had to go to a cell phone store to get a phone working in 9 or 10 years maybe longer. Even from memory when the Samsung Blackjack, Moto Razr and 09 IPhone (3g or 3gs can't remember) was plug and play. 2016 buying a phone and having issues from day 1 can't be tolerated from me or anyone else. All these manufacturers, companies, etc are getting clumsy and lazy. Especially the last 2 years. There was a time you could buy a phone and it have no bugs whatsoever. I've owned many phones like this. Maybe 6-12 months issues start to happen. Everything is rushed, From planning to parts to google OS to the manufacturer to the provider. Something seems to always be incomplete. Like lets release 5.0 with a whole bunch of issues so we can get some money rolling in and just release a update when we can. Connectivity issue to me is the phone not connected. Doesn't matter if its a full moon the cause of it. I can't go to Sprint or T-Mobile because the service at home/work is minimal. Verizon is the king in my city and at&t second but at&t pre-paid doesn't have options like there post paid (wifi calling, volte, etc)

The issue is not with Motorola, it's totally and completely an issue with Verizon's system. This issue affects any non-approved phone you bring to Verizon, not just the G4. You should really direct your complaints to Verizon, post on Verizon forums, etc. Motorola can't do anything about it, as they do not have access to Verizon's activation system.

Does the mobile hotspot work out the box for folks with unlimited data or does it require rooting to disable the carrier check?

One last question, does data and voice work at the same time? It does with my moto pure, but not my nexus 5x.

Yes, it supports Verizon VoLTE (which enables simultaneous voice and data over LTE).

How was the problem solved? Having the similar issues.

Using unlocked Pixel from Google Store on Verizon?

UPDATE: Droid Life confirms unlocked Pixel works on Verizon. :good:
I just wanted some clarification on this.
I've been getting some conflicting information around this question, so I wanted to post it here in case anyone knows.
Can the unlocked Pixel purchased from the Google Store be used on Verizon?
I bought the 5X and 6P unlocked from the Google Store and have used them both on Project Fi and Verizon. I just wanted to know if I could do the same with the Pixel.
Thanks and sorry if this has been explained clearly elsewhere.

Yes. It is compatible with CDMA and all of Verizon's LTE bands, and the description in the Google store says it's compatible with all major US carriers. However, you won't be able to use features that require Verizon software like wifi calling and VoLTE. Personally, I don't care about those things. I'm on Verizon and I'm seriously considering buying from the Google store.
You'll need an activated Verizon nano SIM card though.

I'm not sure that's true. For example, my unlocked Nexus 6 purchased from Motorola is able to use VoLTE. I don't have wifi calling, but I don't think Nexus 6 has wifi calling at all for Verizon, as it doesn't show up as a supported device: https://www.verizonwireless.com/smartphones/wificalling/

Good question. I suspect the answer is you'll be able to use it, the question is just how degraded the experience will be. When the Nexus 6 launched there were several problems with using the unlocked version:
The bring-your-own-device discount did not show up for unlocked Nexus 6, only Verizon-purchased Nexus 6
It was extremely difficult to activate a new SIM on the phone
They did eventually reinstate the discount after many people filed complaints with the FCC.
I didn't follow the 6P/5X launch very closely... how did those work on Verizon? That might give a better clue than the Nexus 6 launch since it's more recent.

I wouldn't call paying $300/year extra "fine". You might want to look into it, I believe you have to request the discount. It's been a while since I dealt with this though.

Hey dude... I recently switched over to Verizon, and have had a 6P since launch last year. Was wondering, what exactly is voLTE, is there something special that has to be done to make it work, and do you know IF there is any way to get wifi calling to work? I do tend to need it since at times I don't get good reception...

voLTE is just voice over LTE which you already have which basically means voice and data simultaneously. And no WiFi calling calling available on Verizon. At least not to my knowledge anyway [emoji106]

Just to add...
My son's 6p works great on Verizon. He has VoLTE and get's the non contract discount. Never had a problem with it. I had the original Google Play store Nexus 6 and ran into problems initially. But like someone else stated, everything is fine now. I even bought an unlocked one not too long ago and had no issues with it. I don't think we will have any problems with the Pixels.

VoLTE is Voice over LTE. It means voice calls are transmitted over the new LTE network instead of the legacy CDMA network (or GSM in the case of carriers besides Verizon/Sprint).
It's important because if your phone has only a half-duplex modem, as most recent CDMA phones starting around the time of Droid Turbo and Nexus 6 do, you can't conduct a voice call (circuit switched) and have an LTE data connection (packet switched) at the same time. (Interestingly GSM carriers can do a GSM voice stream and LTE data stream at the same time with a half-duplex modem since there's a standard for doing that, but it's not possible with CDMA and LTE without a more expensive full-duplex modem.)
How can you tell if VoLTE is working for you? Turn off wifi for the purpose of the test, if you're connected to a wifi network (you're testing whether you can do data over the cell network, not wifi, while a call is ongoing). Verify the "LTE" logo shows up next to the cell signal strength indicator. Place a voice call. If the "LTE" logo disappears while the voice call is ongoing, you don't have VoLTE. If it remains, you're good. Most importantly, try using data e.g. web browser over cellular data while on a voice call.
What if the VoLTE test doesn't work? On your My Verizon account, go to My Plan & Services -> Manage Products & Apps , and make sure "HD Voice" (they used to call it Advanced Calling) is enabled. On your Nexus Settings, go to Wireless & Networks -> More -> Cellular Networks, and turn on "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" if it isn't already. Note that turning on HD Voice on your Verizon account requires you to switch to either Basic or Premium Visual Voicemail -- the old fashioned voice mail doesn't work with it.
What's the difference between VoLTE and HD Voice? VoLTE is about the connection from your phone to the Verizon tower, and it applies no matter whom you are calling; it enables simultaneous voice and data. HD Voice is a high-bandwidth codec for much better sounding voice calls, but the other end has to support it too, so it only works if you have VoLTE (HD Voice over non-LTE is theoretically possible but Verizon doesn't support it) AND if the person you are calling supports HD Voice too (e.g. another recent Nexus or iPhone that's correctly configured). You can tell if HD Voice is working because the "HD" icon will appear in the dialer AFTER THE OTHER PERSON PICKS UP THE CALL, but you won't even need to look for the icon because the call will sound so vastly better that it will be obvious.
What about Wifi calling on Verizon? They actually DO support it, but not on Nexus devices. Here is their FAQ and list of supported devices, which does not include Nexus 6/6P. I have personally seen it working on a Verizon iPhone so I know they have it. And, according to this, the Pixel will support wifi calling on Verizon!

The Pixel, along with many "international" phones, supports both CDMA and GSM networks. And yes, CDMA carriers like Verizon started using SIM cards several years ago. I think it's necessary in order to offer LTE compatibility, but I don't know the details.

LTE is GSM based at it's core, so basically yes LTE is the reason for CDMA carriers adding sim cards.
CDMA will eventually disappear completely as VOLTE replaces 2g and 3g for both voice and data transmission.
Wi-Fi calling is the only question, but even if it requires some proprietary VZW bull, an unlocked bootloader should let us flash their image if it ended up being necessary, but that's a last resort I don't expect to face...

Essential PH-1 on AT&T postpaid

If you are not on AT&T postpaid plans, then please refrain from posting. I had enough research that Sprint and T-Mobile are working fine with the phone with all the advanced connectivity options.
AT&T currently has a crappy insincere BYOD policy even though they said they welcome your device. Here's the link from AT&T website about the Essential PH-1.
https://www.att.com/plans/essential-phone.html
In reality, the Essential PH-1 on AT&T will be restricted to HSPA/UMTS for voice and LTE for data. Advanced connectivity options such as HD Voice, VoLTE and WiFi calling do not work on Essential PH-1. Looking around, the same frustrations do apply for others with unbranded phones from Google and OnePlus.
How does this differ from prepaid? I'm getting LTE+ and WiFi calling. Not getting Volte though. Would it say Volte up top of it's active during a call? I get HSPA during calls.

I don't think AT&T prepaid has any of the advanced connectivity options. How do you know WiFi calling is working for you? Having the option showed up in Settings->Wireless & Network does not imply it is working. Mine has the option, too, but placing or receiving calls still drop down to HSPA/UMTS. You can check what kind of network you used on placing/receiving calls by going into *#*#4636#*#* menu.
Mine stays on LTE during calls. You have to call them and give them your IMEI and let them provision it and then reboot your phone. Did it today, works great. Never tried prepaid, standard unlimited data family plan here.

I did.
When I got my Essential PH-1 from BestBuy, I even called up AT&T rep to get a new SIM card for the phone. I provided the phone make/model and IMEI to them, since my old SIM card from OnePlus X back in 2015 was not getting these advanced connectivity options. Essential tech support recommended that I obtained a new SIM card from AT&T. I am surprised that you were able to get this done over the phone with AT&T tech support without having a case opened and wait for another 9~11 business days.
My case is currently opened and expected to be resolved by 11/30/2017. I had threatened to move to T-Mobile if they did not escalate the resolution. Researching further, I have less hope that Essential PH-1 will be fully supported by AT&T BYOD in all the advanced connectivity options. And, I am not alone with such frustrations.

I am really after VoLTE, WiFi calling and HD Voice are nice to have. Essential PH-1 LTE HSPA/UMTS indoor reception seems to be poor compared to OnePlusX from where I live.
It all works fine here. Just had to provide the IMEI for them over the phone and reboot my PH-1 after. Getting all of these features on mine, no problem.
If you register the PH-1 IMEI to the SIM you will not get VoLTE on AT&T as it is not an AT&T carrier branded phone. AT&T reserves those features for their phones.
To get around that, register an IMEI from an AT&T carrier branded phone to the SIM. Then you will get VoLTE. Unfortunately WiFi calling does not work even though the option is available on the PH-1.
My SIM is registered with my old AT&T S8 IMEI. I'm still on LTE during a call and also get HD icon on the call screen for HD Voice call also.
Quick and easy test would be to take a friend's AT&T SIM and plug it in to verify VoLTE.

I never thought of that. Yeah, maybe the difference is that a lot of us had a SIM from a previous AT&T branded phone that we just tossed in here, so when we gave them our IMEI it all just worked.
If I had to ask them for a new SIM and told them it was for this phone, maybe it wouldn't?

Strange though. In my case I've never had an AT&T branded phone with this SIM and it all still works since getting them my IMEI. Every phone I've used has been bought outright from the given manufacturer.

AT&T just closed my case with a disappointing response.

So for those of you who claimed VoLTE/Wi-Fi calling/HD Voice work on Essential PH-1, I would seriously doubt the validity of such claims. AT&T system is smart enough now to detect IMEI mismatch if you reuse existing SIM on AT&T branded phone. AT&T periodical system audits may disable such advanced connectivity options once it is flagged by the system.

Yes that's right, we're all lying. Dumbass.
Sent from my Essential PH-1 using Tapatalk
I know for a fact that I have HD voice. The dialer shows HD on some calls and doesn't on the others. When it doesn't, there is a sound quality difference.
The SIM that I'm using came from an AT&T branded HTC M8 which i l used on an M9 and then the 10... Now it's in the PH-1

I suggest you to go for the Korean model if it's not working. Just make sure to check lte bands for compatibility.

Have a chance to get a good deal on a unlocked sprint version.
Then go for it. But be sure to be Sim unlocked and lte bands accepted. The Korean sells for 800$ on eBay. Also can be flashed with European firmware and supports secondary screen. Imo has better quality also software aside. Noticed with LG G7... If you got better deal then go for it.
Are you sure it's unlocked and if so, how was it unlocked? I have a Sprint model and I'm having to wait ‘til my 50 service days are up to get Sprint to unlock it. I've contacted some pretty good unlocking services and hearing the same thing from all; As of now only Sprint can unlock it.
As we all know Sprint 5G service area (like all others) is very small but they're still charging everyone who activates this phone on their service for a 5G service plan regardless of whether they have 5G service in your area or not. I got a great deal on a 3rd party phone but it was locked which I knew going in. As soon as it's unlocked, I'm going to try GFI. BTW, it's a great phone.

Wont be sure until I put my sim card in but it owner says sim unlocked. No interest in 5g anytime soon. If possible will disable/limit to lte.
One thing's for sure.... LG phones drop like a rock! I couldn't wait but I’m thinking in two months this phone's (sprint model) probably going to be selling for $400. Imo the only thing holding the price up for now is there just aren't very many out in the wild. Kind of strange really, since according to the Ifixit breakdown, it has the same Qualcomm 5G X50 modem as both the Galaxy S10 5G phone and the new Note 5G. Otherwise the specs are very similar. I guess it’s all perceived value.

My 50 days on Sprint are up in about a week. I'm moving back to Google Fi as soon as I unlock. Of course, Fi uses both Tmob & Sprint networks so I'm fairly sure is will work on one or the other.

Yeah, LG phones drop like a rock.
Some vendor on eBay was selling the Korean V50 with dual screen for $529......yeah.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-V50-Thi...972866&hash=item1f015f8485:g:k9wAAOSw4kZdX2mi
I am just waiting for these to drop even more if that. Doubt the 5G works in other markets.
were you able to use wifi calling ? were you able to eliminate the 'activate' message. Thanks
Finally Sim unlocked and ported over to Simple Mobile, a Tmob Mvno. It was relatively painless and took less than an hour for the actual port. No reason to be on Sprint right now if you don't have 5G service in your area. I was on the phone with Sprint yesterday for at least an hour and a half and gave them every chance to do something about my bill. I asked them point blank why anyone would pay for 5G service when it's not even in their area? Their response was just lame. I'm guessing it will be at least one if not two years before 5G is working in a wide spread fashion in a lot of cities in the US.
Now, as for the service on Tmob's network, it's only been about a hour since I switched but have made couple of phone calls and run a couple of speed tests. Phone call quality seems same same and speed test speeds seemed the same as if I were on Tmob., 15 down and about 7-10 on the upload. Now the freaking really good news. Simple mobile is running a special for 3GBs data and unlimited talk, unlimited text. at $25 per month. If you do auto pay after taxes it's $22 and change.
are all t mobile bands available? Does it work with t mobile 5G?
As of right now, there seems to be a problem with the APN record on the sprint model. Sprint, the scumbag company that it is, has locked the APN. They'll unlock the phone to except other sim cards, no problem. But when your new provider tries to register your phone on their network it doesn't fully complete the process. In other words, part of the process is that a new APN record is pushed down to the phone identifying the new MMS DNS server for that network. I use Simple Mobile which is a MVNO of Tmob but Sprint has locked the APN on my V50. I;m still able to get data but can't send/receive pictures via text messages.
So be ware.

does wifi calling work? how are updates handled . thank you
We have a pair of sprint unlocked V50 and just got an update over the metropcs service.
In the service menu it says voice over wifi is provisioned but in the settings network voice over wifi is off and the switch wont stay to on position when i toggle to on.
I still see my cellular connection in the notification area disappear then reappear.
Is this normal behavior or is it trying to activate in background? Maybe it checking for 5G?
I think it using more batt then usual possibly
Now....... finally, some good news and this took a bit of doing. To start off with I originally tried an old Fi sim card I had to port out of Sprint after those scumbags unlocked my V50. I kept getting a T077 error during the Google Fi activation process and Fi support just kept telling me that the V50 wasn't a supported device and they couldn’t help. I told them I thought it was a bad sim card so they suggest I pick up a new one at Best Buy. So, after a trip down to Best Buy I found out that they rarely have Fi cards in stock so I picked up a Simple Mobile (tmob mvno) sim for a buck and the port/activation sort of worked in that I successfully ported my number from Sprint and I was able to make calls and get data but couldn't receive/send pictures (MMS) in text. So, I said screw it and order another Fi Sim card thru the Google site and waited a week. I got it yesterday late and tried it this morning and crap it didn't work with the same activation error, T077. I have been scouring the internet for days for any info the error code and somewhere along the way I remember seeing something about taking the mvno card out and then putting the Fi card in and trying to activate without rebooting the phone. Now remember this is really all about not being able to edit the APN record with the correct DNS info so you can receive MMS picture by text. Anyway, after slipping in the FI sim card to my V50 the activation process suddenly squeaked on thru and low and behold I'm now running on Google Fi with MMS working and APN record is correctly updated the Fi info. I think the reason it worked was that the activation process thought I was a Tmob customer. When it asked me for account info to port my existing number to GFI the dialog screen show things like.... Enter your T-Mobile account number and asked what was the name on my T-Mobile account. But for whatever reason it worked and now I'm finally free of Sprint.
It worked for me but your mileage may very.

What sms app do you use? Lg or Google? Cuz with Google messaging I have fully enabled RCS. Sending pics and videos over data and wifi. Why bother with mms when RCS technology is way better?

Question An A52 4G Dilemma

So this past summer I purchased a 4G version of the A52 from Amazon, my main reason being it was cheaper than the 5G. Now I'm finding that this choice may be affecting my carrier situation. I am in the United States, and had Cricket Wireless at the time of purchasing the phone. It worked for about 4 hours, then the service quit on me. Apparently Cricket claimed that my phone did not have the proper technology, blah blah blah, something to do with the discontinuation of 3G and or VOLTE. This obviously does not make sense, since this phone is from 2021 and would not be made with old tech. Anyway, I got them to turn my sevice back on, after it being in a "suspended" state. It was still working for a while, and then some time in september I think Cricket sent a text to me (and my fiance as well, also has a phone cricket doesn't like) saying that they would start redirecting our calls to customer service to get us to "upgrade" since the phones would supposedly stop working completely in February or whenever 3G is supposed to go kaput. So, we switched to Mint, who claimed that our phones would both work on their network, and they did, except that the service sucks, even while being in a modest sized city. It also has little to no service at my work, and I'm convinced that T-mobile's service, at least through Mint, absolutely sucks.
So, my question is, what do you all suggest? Does anyone have this model, and what carrier are you with? What kind of luck (or lack thereof) has anyone been having?
Sorry if this has no place here, just doing all I can to get some answers
Well, I don't think I have a clear answer to your question, this is something that I found very very weird. I handed over a Galaxy S9+ to my fiancee who's carrier name I forget, I think it also got acquired by T-Mobile, but I'm not 100% certain. However, the phone didn't work properly. I can't remember what problems exactly it had but they were network related. Turns out that if you're going to change phones you need to go to a store for them to configure it and change it in their system. Otherwise it will either not work or not work properly.
And this was also the case with her sister who bought an unlocked, Mexican phone and she also had to take it to the store for them to configure it. It would have these problems unless she took it to them.
You would assume that all you need is to insert the SIM and it would work out the box but I don't know why this carrier had this method which just makes everything so annoying and complicated when it doesn't need to be. Oh and this isn't a one time thing, every time they changed phones they would need to do this! So you should probably look at going this route, it's my best guess.
EDIT: Oh and also before we knew this, we had also purchased a Galaxy Note 3 (which yeah it's old, but had 4G when I used it with my carrier and all of a sudden it turned to 3G when used on her carrier) so we ended up giving it away. So it was definitely a carrier problem. It was so annoying.

Question PSA: It's looking like the Unlocked Pixel 7/7 Pro & Straight Talk/Tracfone's Verizon BYOP service are not compatible.

If you're using either Straight Talk, or Tracfone with their Verizon SIM, I would avoid the Unlocked Pixel 7 & 7 Pro for right now. I'm not sure if it's the phones themselves, or an issue with the carrier, or a combination of both, but it seems they're not compatible. I got my 7 Pro on Wednesday and tried using my ST Verizon SIM and it wouldn't work. I'm coming from a Oneplus 9 Pro and the SIM works just fine.
I say it could be an issue with either the phone, or with ST/TF because when I contacted Google Support to initiate an exchange, the only phone they would let me order with my RMA was the Google Fi version. I contacted support again about not being able to order the Unlocked version. I sent them a screenshot of my order email and a picture of the phones box with the SKU, all of which pointed to the phone being the Unlocked version. They agreed and I'm now waiting for them to resolve the issue of me not being able to buy the Unlocked version through my RMA request. So maybe there could be an issue on Googles end with the Unlocked version of the pixel 7/7 Pro.
I also say it could be an issue with ST/TF, becasue Verizon has recently bought Tracfone and all of their subsidiaries, Straight Talk being one of them. Because of this, I'm not sure if they've basically merged the services to the point where you would need the Verizon version of the phone in order for it to work. This is just speculation on my part though. I did contact Straight Talk support first, where they checked my IMEI/ICCID numbers, which matched what they were seeing on their end. They also ran me through the usual troubleshooting list, with nothing fixing the issue.
Here's a link to a couple threads with people having the same issue. The first one is one I posted the other day:

I am having the same issue with the phone reading the SIM Data just fine but will not connect to any cell towers, I did a bunch of research and there are several people with this same issue and some report doing a software update on the phone resolved their problem. I have not been as lucky as these people as I still have the issue with my phone.
As for the "Verizon" version of the phone there is no such thing for the P7P as the unlocked version and verizon version are the same model number for the phone which includes the 5G mmWave.
The update takes over an hour so be prepared for that

Oh yea, I already tried the update(didn't fix the issue) the other day, and yes, it took over an hour to install.
There are lots of compatibility issues. I tried signing up for eSIM on a bunch of MVNOs and prepaid plans last night and to my amazement the only one that worked was AT&T Prepaid -- and it's not supposed to work with Pixels on the activation portal.

I also tried the latest Pixel 7 software update, and it did not resolve the issue.
For what it's worth, I just contacted Google support. The representative told me they did not have any reports of this issue yet. I directed them to this post as well as another under the GooglePixel subreddit and one under the StraightTalk subreddit. I submitted all of my information to them and sent screenshots of the SIM not connecting. They are escalating the issue.

Just took my phone back to Best Buy. They had some more in stock so I tried another one straight out of the box without doing the update and that one is not reading my SIM and connecting to the towers either..
Google Fi sim has issues for me. Flashed latest Oct factory and BL unlock and root. Let sit overnight and installed sim. Looks like at moment of sim registration to cellular enabling it causes a reboot. Tried a few times and sometimes airplane mode would be on, and no sim (blank) or times just bootloop cycling. Removing sim, bootloop cycling stopped. Then airplane mode, but wifi can be on. So reflash latest again, no root. Same thing happening.
Support still clueless and escalation has begun.
Sim back in my 6a and all is fine.
I do know some data is pushed into system upon a Fi sim insertion been that way since my pixel 3. My local coverage is us cellular which requires a locked BL, but fortunately on Fi it works without a locked BL.
So thought to add, likely we need a immediate G side update...

Same issues with Total by Verizon (Total Wireless, another former tracfone) on my Pixel 7 as well as many others. Multiple sims and another carrier sim verified working in my phone.
Cross-posting this from reddit-
Brief update for everyone in the thread or lurking- Talked to Google support just now.
The tech I spoke explained that this is now a known widespread issue that has been escalated and is "top priority" (his words) for the engineers.
He documented my IMEI and added it to the ongoing ticket. I should be getting a follow-up email sometime in the future when a workaround is found.
I'd recommend calling to do the same ASAP to make sure that they are aware how widespread the issue is.

I am using it on Fi coming from my Pixel 4 XL. Instead of moving the sim card from my old phone I decided to use eSIM with this one and leave the card in the old one and it's working perfectly.
Excellent news ....for some.
I have many many devices on at any one moment and using the SIM vs eSIM allows me to keep the other non-phone devices on. Yes I could disable eSIM and still leave on. Unfortunately since I also reboot, flash different modules, roms, and in general leave only one as the sim activated device... Honestly if this is now a new thing, disclosure would be nice. No other pixel I've owned requires eSIM only. I will have to rethink my G. Fi future. Fortunately I'm now free of Fi device payments for purchase.
Edit update-- Seems on a Google Fi SIM that was used on my pixels 3, 4a, 4a5g, 6, 6a (2) working just fine...was the problem with 7 pro.
No good answer from Fi CS but they said to use a never used Fi sim. Which I had on hand.
Normal first SIM start and log in, works fine on 7 pro. Removed and now back on my 6a and working correctly. I guess... something is provisioned on carrier/sim/ install?
My answer is likely only helpful for Fi user base.
Total by Verizon (formerly total wireless). Having same issue. Pixel 7 won't connect to network, I've worked with their tech support for the past 18 hours with no luck. At this point I've reverted back to using my old phone and if this doesn't get resolved in the next week or so, I will be returning my pixel 7 as it's no use to me in its current form.
Semi-interesting thing.
I found an old straight talk AT&T SIM so I tried to activate that.
The Straight talk site accepted the SIM card number, but my IMEI was rejected. Either they are flat out saying it is incompatible now or ST has temporarily stopped Pixel 7 devices from attempting to activate until it's fixed. At least they seem to be aware?

Go to prepaidcompare.net and find a new MVNO. All the TracFone brands have gone to hell since Verizon took them over.
I know some will not care to hear this, but it's probably worth posting (for the sake of those readers who might be wondering) that prepaid Verizon is indeed working without issue.
This isn't a vote or an ad for VZW.
I usually go with whatever is least expensive that meets my needs (Red Pocket, Straight Talk, Mint, Google Fi, Visible have all gotten my business at some point) but VZW is the only carrier with decent coverage at my current workplace.
I'm in the same boat of needing Verizon. I plan to check out US Mobile. Good pricing and esim capable (working with P7P, not with P7 right now) alont with a 10 day trial.

I know some will not care to hear this, but it's probably worth posting (for the sake of those readers who might be wondering) that prepaid Verizon is indeed working without issue.

Are you locked or unlocked? Would be nice to know, unlockable device is my requirements. Having another good signal provider for my home would be nice, currently Verizon is one.
I couldn't in the past get Verizon because of the locked part...

FWIW, US Mobile Warp 5G SIM uses Verizon (and even gets the same priority Verizon postpaid customers get if you use a 5G device unlike Verizon prepaid which is deprioritized to last network priority) and I was even able to activate my eSIM on their service with no problem.
Unfortunately, Verizon sucks here, so the trial is going to go to waste, but I tried a bunch of MVNO and carrier prepaid options and only AT&T Prepaid and US Mobile worked.

The Pixel 7 Pro supports all of Verizon's bands including mmWave no matter if you get it locked from them or unlocked elsewhere. Verizon added the Pixel 7 Pro to their database from day one because of that mmWave support.
I might have used the wrong word, I meant can the bootloader be unlocked and multiple devices. My problem with Verizon was imei dependent. Could not use a Verizon sim on multiple devices.
