Help? Bought unlocked Samsung Note 9 - General Questions and Answers

Hi, sry if I posted my question in the wrong area but I just recieved my Samsung Note 9. Been without a phone for 2.5 wks. It was nothing... (ahem... bu****it!!!)
Im an AT&T customer (I dont pay for phone service) so I was hoping if I bought an unlocked phone I might be able to root my device even though Im an AT&T customer. For some reason soon as you say AT&T customer, its like you have some super Covid strain cause nobody will come near you. Lol
Anyways, I would just like to be able to root my device so I can run a few of my fav apps which require root/super user. Im scared to even turn my device on because Im afraid AT&T is gonna patch it soon as I do and I wont be able to root my phone. Can someone please just tell me how best to proceed. Sry, I have not searched the forum yet. Im just in a hurry to get my phone back on so i can feel whole again. Im headed over to the thread for my phone now and will update this thread soon as i find out what i need to do. In the meantime any help would be greatly appreciated. Big thanks to everyone at XDA for all the love & support you guys give to the community.
Thanks and have have a blessed day!

Did you buy the international variant or the U.S. variant?

Hey sorry for the late response. Im guessing i got the US variant since it was for a Verizon or AT&T customer. Unfortunately, its a refurb and was DOA. So im sending it back today. Which phone would you buy on a $300 budget? The screen was scratched up pretty baf also so im glad it was dead out of the box. Is this something I should expect when buying a refurb. I assumed since i was paying close to market price for a Samsung Note 9 that it would be in better shape with no scratches or very few. This one was scratched up pretty good all the way around the edge of the screen.
I was also considering buying a brand new Samsung A71. Most sites online have the Google Pixel 4a listed as the top phone on a $300 budget. I just feel like Google is intrusive enough as it is already without owning a phone made by them but I hold the XDA community in high regard when it comes to cell phones, specially android variants so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and be a deciding factor in my purchase.
Again i just would like to be able to gain root/super_user permissions so i can run some of my fav apps that require root access. If im able to install some custom roms as well that would be fabulous but not necessarily a requirement. If ive learned anything at XDA its that AT&T customers are usually screwed when it comes to rooting phones, at least in the early stages of recently released cell phones.
Thanks again for the assistance guys... and gals (and those that don't identify with either sex these days.) When i was growing up, you either had a hole or pole and that determined your sex. Lol! Sorry to get political on you guys but it seems everyone gets triggered so easily these days.

Lol that last is the best sentence I've ever read in my life xDDD
But anyway, there are a few things I should point out.
-> You should only buy Samsung phones (even budget ones) if you like OneUI. If you want a stock aosp ROM, then stay away from Samsung phones since they get the least amount of attention and get a Xiaomi instead. They're phones that have communities booming and offer good quality for the price
-> If you don't want AOSP and really enjoy OneUI, then avoid getting a Samsung phone that is meant for the U.S. market and get an international variant. All U.S. variant Samsung phones have their bootloader hard locked and you need to buy a token (extra money) to even be able to unlock the bootloader and root it. Keep in mind that SOME international variants have the Exynos chip so just FYI. Though some mid-rangers offer Snapdragon across the board (U.S. or International) but yeah just avoid U.S. variant phones if you want root.
-> Lastly, avoid the Galaxy A71, go for the A52 instead. The A52 is about the same price as the A71 (in some places you'll probably even find the A52 cheaper) and the A52 has higher refresh rate, water resistance, dual speakers, optical image stabilization and an SoC that is on par with the A71.

You can request through AT&T's tech support that they turn off OTAs on their end.
Yes, yes they can that.
Or use Package Disabler to kill it.
It's probably the best solution.

Dev phones available!

Google announced that they're making unlocked developer phones available. No sim lock, unlocked bootloader and all that.
http://code.google.com/android/dev-devices.html
$399 + $25 dev registration fee, with free shipping.
Oh, and check out the back cover
http://android.brightstarcorp.com/images/placeholders/dev3.jpg
Awesome! I am assuming Google will be doing separate OTA updates for the dev phones. That will be nice to have as well for existing rooted phones.
About time!
You can use any SIM in the device and can flash custom Android builds that will work with the unlocked bootloader. Unlike the bootloader on retail devices, the bootloader on the Android Dev Phone 1 does not enforce signed system images.

Are they referring to the htc bootloader?
Is it possible to extract the data from these phones and use them on non-dev phones? Or am I asking a stupid question?
Yes. Per swetland on freenode/#android, it has the htc engineering bootloader.

Possibly.. we'll have to wait and see
I’d be really interested in where they’ll ship the handsets from…
The price is good, but if they ship it from the US, I’d have to pay VAT (19%), import taxes and shipping which would result in the package being 100$+ more expensive :-/
If they'd be able to ship them from inside the EU on the other hand, I'd immediately order one
Can I order one. I'm from Vietnam.
Who have G1 dev version please write a review, I want to know about battery life
at last what i was Emailing on Daily Basis.
Infact i was insisting them to release Developer Edition of Firmware
But they have come with Device
this is sweet...im gonna try to sell my current g1 and buy the dev one.
I buy the cover from a struggling dev
I'd give 25$ +shipping for that back cover with that funky bullsh1t on the back, looks 'leet
and donate sumthin to a dev, id also offer mine to replace...
its kinda just a joke but if anybody wants to take me up on it when they get one of these badboys, with the recent nand dump, we can now just dump the bootloader on the make nicenice with the devs phone and repalce our stock boot with it and whammo, RUN ANYTHING? and flash it to the handset, debian, ubuntu mobile, WM, even custom android could I say "distrubutions?
wholly open source tmobile , BatMan... If Im wrong please let me know but this seems like goog or andy or whomever is sympathetic to the plight of the enslaved tmobile G1s
bhang
This is in google's best interest. They want android to be a success, and in order to do that, atleast the most effective way to do that, is to give devolpers the most open of a door as possible to the system.
The big stick-in-the-mud as far as root goes has always been t-mobile. telcoms don't want people to have full control of their device.
The only thing surprising about this to me is that they didn't introduce the g1 with this edition as well.
=]
Well I can safely say, t-mobile employees aren't trained well enough, and they basically said that there is no way to updrade or downgrade firmware's, and rc 30 was "perfect", litterally.
well....not all t-mobile employees...
im a t-mobile employee, and from my experiences since september 23, have been that most of the people around me know their way around the device from a retail consumer standpoint. you cant assume that general customer care or even tier 1 tech support knows as much as the people that read/post here.
just looking out for my collegues....

well, I don't fully agree. There are a number of employees that should be deemed legally retarded, but just because they are a t-mobile employee doesnt mean they should know how to work the phone. From a t-mobile standpoint, the rc-30 is the perfect (for now) as its a non-root that has no known security holes, htc I doubt would care one way or the other, and google would probably prefer completely open hardware (see the dev phones).
What would you want to know from a t-mobile employee about this phone that they can't answer?
You have to remeber, they don't design the phone, they don't hack the phone, they just sell airtime. So they have no reason to know alot of things that we find out, since they don't attempt to.
That is true I work in cs for VZW, I should probably have rephrased that the tier 2 tech ppl, especially the g1 support line have no clue how to work the g1. And the PDA/Smartphone tier 2 ppl say it's "perfect", and also have no clue how to work it, either. I called litterally everyone I could find a contact for to find a way to downgrade from RC30. HTC got mad and gave the # for cs at t-mobile. Google sent me to google.com/support. G1 suport sent me to HTC and PDA/Smartphone support, or told me they had no clue.

So you have one small problem... Tell me something since you say you work cs at VZW... do you think anyone at your company would tell you how even if you could? Do you really think they would handle any support about how to upgrade or downgrade software on any of their smartphones? Last I checked VZW was the worst when it comes to smart phones by locking out GPS and other functions unless you pay, and only allowing their phones on the network.
So far when I have called up I have got nothing but good results. Even if the problem couldn't be completely fixed over the phone they have always compensated me (I got about 40 dollars off my next bill)
And yea their CS department can't do much on the tech side... but I have gotten to Tier 3 numerous times on other devices and always been satisfied.

I don't care, I tell ppl what they need to hear not what they want to hear, yes I tell them things that aren't official. And I tell them google is their friend. Since I'm flex pay, they dn't care about keeping me there, I've been on my own acct since the G1 came out, that's the whole reason I switched from the Iphone. That thing about the GPS is only true on regular phones, the PDA/Smartphones/Blackberry's are a whole diff story. I'm also quitting that job soon, due to me being tired of screwing ppl oer the phone.
Woo! I've ordered my dev phone. Now I need to get rid of my G1. Luckily I can still take it back to t-mob for a refund (tomorrow is the last day though). I thought I would offer it to you guys first though. It's unlocked and has modified RC30 of course. I'll let it go for $400, including free shipping. If no-one says they want it by tomorrow at noon, it's going back to t-mobile. I'll even sign it if you want
Update: taken back to the t-mobile store. got a full refund, no restocking fee or anything. So I'll only be out about $20-25 for the dev phone.. got $430 back for the G1 and $455 for the dev phone ($400 + $25 market fee + $30 tax)
does anybody know if the credit card address can be different from the shipping address?
I'd love to be able to use the reasonable "free" shipping to the US and have a friend bring it over on his next visit to germany

Is it possible to buy Samsung Captivate without countract?

Hello, I am going to visit the US in August and I would really like to buy Samsung Captivate, but not the Samsung Galaxy S (I really hate its iPhone style design)
Is it possible for a foreigner to buy Captivate (and unlock it) and use it with my own sim card here in Russia?
just found this instruction - http://ddd.in.com/videos/watchvideo...ngular-att-free-network-sim-code-8507521.html
does it work?
As for non-contract? yes! It will be $350 in any AT&T store.
As for unlocking it, i'm not sure.
so I can just come and buy it in AT&T store without showing some documents like I am a citizan of the US? and btw the price is very low, comparing with its price here in Moscow - $1000
Then, I need just to unlock it for any sim card?

LoL! Yes dude, you can buy it. The only citizenship doecuments you need are US Dollars!
Thanks, dudes, you really helped me)

The design of Samsung Galaxy S really suks and the Captivate one is awesome
dark, just in case you didn't already know, as of now unlocks aren't available, but it's highly likely that they will be soon. This means that you wont be able to use your phone right away when you get back to the mother land.
On the other hand if you hang in there, by the time unlocks come out, there will be plenty of guides on how to make this phone look as little as the ios as possible. Not to mention alot more online support for it.
Just wanted to make sure you didn't get back home to a huge disappointment .
Good point. I just assumed he was aware of that. As quickly as this thing is gaining momentum, I doubt you'd have to wait long before it's unlocked.
Well, just read the review on one web-site and there was a phrase:
AT&T won't let you sideload apps.
I am confused, does it mean that there is no android market???????????
I saw a video - how to unlock Samsung Captivate - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dlxc6AJaAys
Does it work?
So if it's fake, I am planning to stay in the US until the end of August, are there any chances for the unlock to reveal?
There is a market, but you can't put stuff on there that isn't from the market.
With AT&T, the only thing can be installed is stuff from the market.
Do you mean that it's just not possible to put .apk files in the phone?
Well, in this case I am OK with Android Market
crap, just read in another review, that there is an AT&T Market - this totally sucks!
So, it is different from Android Market?
Or there are two markets there?

Yup thats pretty much the case, so if you do not mind it, you are good to go. I would not worry too much about an unlock as this phone is spreading faster than fire through the community and should be unlockable pretty soon.
That I have no idea about. I have never owned an Android phone so I only go by what I have read.
but as of this weekend, I will own one!
Maybe root will help us to install 3-rd party apps?
Guys, please post additional info about unlock , when some new information reveals.
I am really interested in this phone.
And can someone check if it is possible to choose Russian locale? I mean transforming the interface to the Russian one
Here is an unlock instruction http://hyfeno.com/unlocked-samsung-i897-captivate/
it seems like it should work
btw please advise me the cheapest US 3g network I am planning to travel in many states of the USA for a month...

You should try asking AT&T for the unlock when you purchase it from them. They should be able to provide you with one free of charge since you are paying for the phone outright!
After paying 6 bucks, this is the reply I got from their site.

well, may be you misspelled the code?
if it finally works, it's better to pay these 6 bucks, than paying $1000 for the ugly version of Galaxy S here in Russia
The non contract price I was just quoted from the ATT store were I purchased my phone said the the price off contract was 499.00
I was going to buy this phone for 350.00 but 500.00 is a little steep.
so is it $350 or $500?
I heard that $500 is just for t-mobile version
I was going to go over there to exchange it and buy it out right. Look at the prices of the galaxy s line on ebay,500$ sounds about right.
500$ is what I was told from a corporate ATT store.

Samsung Galaxy R is discontinued, so says Samsung outlets

I contacted Samsung's flagship outlet in India. They said that this product is not being manufactured anymore.
I guess Samsung stopped manufacturing this product. Could be the reason for price drop.
Even with enormous demand for this phone, I don't think they will restart manufacturing because they will be releasing Galaxy S III very soon and will start working on a cheaper variant of Galaxy S III
Maybe calling it a Galaxy R II or Galaxy S III SC-LCD.
That's a really heartbreaking news for me. I really expected this product to be available abundantly and many of the Devs to buy it.
That could've taken our device above the Optimus 2X in every aspect.
Anyway, I would say that this a one sweet sexy baby that we all got.
Hey, but there are some weird thoughts that is crossing my mind. Have you people checked Samsung India's Galaxy R page?
When we click on the link to buy it, it takes us to Letsbuy's website.
That's just a normal online shopping website.
Is there any chance that there is some exclusive deal between Samsung India and Letsbuy that Samsung are providing the stocks exclusively to Letsbuy?
If you check, Letsbuy is the only website that has Galaxy R in stock right now. That too at a price of 21k INR (420 US$)
Could the members from other countries comment about the availability in their respective countries?
Dude if you wanna buy this Phone try on ebay...its available.....also check in your near local stores....dont go to samsung outlets...
i got mine for 20500rs...a week ago frm a dealer....
That's a pretty decent deal that you got. The lowest at eBay India is at 23.5k INR
Out of stock on FlipKart,i think its the cheapest you can buy online for 21k
I bought this phone last Sunday for 21K and that guy sold 3 phones in front of me in few minutes.
It was the cheapest deal i found. This phone is really awesome
We have it in Russia about from $530 to $620 USD in internet stores and regular shops
But we are paying about $170 USD for russian goverment test mark inside
Its still easily available.. atleast on ebay
its been thr on "Deals of the week" from past few weeks...
It is available on eBay, a place where you are supposed to get at good prices. But it's at 23-24k minimum. There's a shortage for the device that's sure. I only have a doubt regarding the production status. Because Samsung stores and many of the dealers said so. I really hope that the device comes back to all the dealers and it is available adequately. More the people who own it ≈ More members in our community ≈ More developer support of it.

I guess the Dev's are gonna need all the help they can get from those owning the device. Chances of getting ROM's other than Infected are looking slim.
Sent from my GT-I9103 using XDA App
An AOSP port is in the works. If you ask me, if the ROMs are good, all that we require is 3 good ROMs for any device. One based on stock like Infected ROM, one CM and MIUI.
Actually, if the ROM is really good, having only 3 is the best. You wont be confused about which to choose. All the members of the community will provide more concentrated support. Having lots of ROMs could make you want to flash each and every ROM and updates to finalise which you like the most. It could take a toll on your social life. (www.xda-developers.com/announcements/do-you-have-obsessive-rom-updating-disorder-ord/)
The AOSP ROM might take a while to reach usable stage. I think that we wont be able to use conventional methods to port AOSP to Tegra devices. Once nVidia releases the ICS sources and the official ICS rolls out, we can expect a surge in the development.
Spain still sells R via the only carrier that has it. No prob at all.to buy it from carrier here, no probs of stock either

From little bit what I know of Marketing, it may be the case that Samsung Galaxy R is actually cannibalizing the sales of Galaxy S/Plus in India which still sell a lot, considering novice users dont know theadvantages between single/dual core processors. Samsung may want to push the sales of galaxy S/ S plus until stocks are out and then restart stocking Galaxy R. OR they may actually cease from selling Galaxy R in the Indian Market. The situation on Dev support would become apparent once its known whether other markets are going to discontinue Galaxy R also.
(Btw: Sammy, if you really did this then God bless Apple f**k you. If not, then let the hunter become the victim.)
Try Sulekha.com. I got it for less than 19k from there! It still sells around that price if you keep tracking (cycles price almost every day)

Really good post, It's not only marketing here though, I would even mention some microeconomics as well
i have read that many galaxy r owners are facing random shut down problems which might be due to hardware issues and also samsung may not wamt to keep this phone running in market for so long, that it would affect sales of other models like s2 and s plus

I bought my SGR on 19th Jan.... In the very fist hour of usage got random restarts..... The phone does not completely restarts though.... Its just... All current tasks get cleaned from ram... screen does not respond for about 10 seconds.... goes dark and again comes back like it has restarted....... Now, i tried hard resetting the device about 5 times.... now will go to the Samsung Service.....
Is there anyone else who faced similar problem.......
Problem: At times my phone does not respond and resets... to start up condition.....
I did face the same problem...Samsung service centre told me that my mother board was faulty....I got my phone replaced from my retailer later...

[Q] How to sell a used One S?

I got my Padfone yesterday which means - if everything is going well - I am going to sell my One S in the next few weeks.
The funny thing is, I have never sold a used (smart)phone before.
Currently, I have an unlocked bootloader, installed a custom recovery and a custom ROM.
My question is, how do guys sell your used smartphones? Just as they are? Or do you go back to stock? Do you relock the bootloader?
well if you sell it online, You can state that its running custom firmware, But can be changed to whatever the buyer prefers.
Or if you sell it to your carrier (most carriers have buy back option) you will need to revert it to stock.
Also check XDA marketplace, You will get lots of interest there, and because people on XDA know what its all about, they wont offer you stupid amounts and try to rip you off !

That is up to the buyer, some buyers don't care and others might actually prefer rooted phones. Then there are others who might not buy it, thinking that a rooted phone is flawed.
I sell my phones on Craigslist (CL). Make sure that you NEVER ship out a phone! EVER! They are all scams. Ask the person to meet up with you in person and ask them for cash ONLY!
Also, people will always try to low ball you, just make sure you are selling for a similar price as other One S on CL in your area and you will be fine.
eBay is another alternative, if people are selling phones on eBay for more than your area, then you might want to try eBay, but eBay takes a cut (about 11-13%). If after eBay cut, you find that you will still sell your phone for higher on eBay than CL, then go for eBay. If you have your own price, try to add a Buy it Now or Best Offer. Auctions are more risky as you might end up selling your phones for cheaper than you expected.
P.S. Congrats on the padphone :good:
I am planning to sell it on ebay.
The question is rather if I should take it back to stock completely or sell it as it is.

I think if you take it back to stock you'll have a bigger potential customer base.
Majority of the peoples don't understand "root" and custom ROM.
I do see it all the time peoples posting for sell with custom ROM.
You could also note if anyone want it stock you can revert it before shipping.
I sold my Samsung Captivate a while back, listed it as rooted.
I sold it but the buyer ask me to take it back to stock.
His reasoning, he would root it but want to learn the process of doing it himself.
+1 on Craigslist.
It is local and safe if a cash only sale. I sold my Blackberries and my Nexus One (different times) the same day I posted add. No surprises. Left the N1 rooted and just Factory Reset to clear personal data. Had buyers meet me at common public place.

just don't mention that it is rooted. If the buyer wins the auction, ask him/her if they need it to be rooted. If they say no, just unroot it and send it.
rooted could be an advantage. the guy i sold to was heavy into flashing

Just want to enjoy all of this....

So I have Sprint. Im grandfatherd into a hell of a good plan with them. So switching plans is not an option. I leased out their samsung galaxy note 10 which is an amazing phone. But... Here my problem.... Theres absolutely no custom roms or any kind of mods or anything like that available for this certain sprint phone. I ended up going out an actually paying full price and purchased the sprint oneplus 7 pro 5g. And what do ya kno?? No roms at all. Barely anything being worked on the sprint model. Tonsbof the other models are being modded and have roms and all.
My question is this. Is there some device out there that is sprint that actually has some good recent rom activity going on for it? Or am i just doomed to not be able to experience anything like that anymore because of good ol Sprint?
Any suggestions and help is much appreciated. Thanks

Well you can always buy unlocked devices and put the good ol' sprint SIM in it.
Perhaps do such research before buying a new device? ^_^
I see it all around the OnePlus fora. Their branded devices are simply a whole other story. It all started with their TMO partnership on the 6T; which put a lot of people in a world of pain. I guess that's the downside of a once respectable development friendly brand now following the path towards global domination.*
But before jumping to any conclusions, was this thread not helpful? [DEBRAND] [CONVERSION] Sprint OnePlus 7 Pro 5G to European FW
Now please stop making posts/threads looking for answers to your mighty important problem. I have sent you an elaborate PM on Jan 18 concerning this matter (read it (again) here).
