AFAIK, unlocking bl is a prerequisite for rooting. Or else, the device wouldn't be able to execute 'fastboot flash' or 'fastboot boot' adb commands.
As for the ad issue, try 'dns.adguard.com' w/o quotes as private dns address (dns over tls).
because you need to modify the boot partition by flashing the patched boot. hence it has to be unlocked. otherwise you will not be able to flash the patched boot.
as simple as this.
By default, the bootloader only supports official signed images from the manufacturer. Since no engineering bootloader is available and we don't have the signing tools, the next best thing is to disable the restriction.

I'm totally new to the Android world and i spent many hours to read this forum to learn as much as possible about my device and what i can do with it. But now, i need your help on a few things.
KitKat vs Lollipop, does it make sense to upgrade to Lollipop now or should i wait? Is there any major know bugs?
Since that i only have a 8gb device, i would like to clean the apps as much as possible. There's many apps that i don't need but they can't be uninstalled. For example, all the Motorola apps (is there something that we really need from them?), a few google apps like Google+, Google Play Films, Hangouts, etc that i will never use.
I want a stable ROM that i don't need to patch every day to solves problems. When i read about CM12 for Moto G, i see people that have problems here and there and wait for the next daily build to give it a try. I don't want to play that game!
If i install a custom rom, i guest that future updates will not come from Motorola. How the updates work afterward?
It's ok if i must have my device rooted
I have read about stock lollipop optimized version by lost101 but it don't think that the versions currently available will work for me. I'm in Canada and the versions that i see is Brazil or Asia.

You have the xt1032? Is there any warranty left? If there is no warranty, I recommend unlocking the bootloader before doing anything. It is easier to restore a bricked phone if you have an unlocked bootloader.
If you intend to stay on stock, you need some of the Motorola apps in order to install OTA updates.
Well what I will say is. I'm in the uk using lost101s BR optimized and I'm very pleased with it.

The phone is new but i don't care about the warranty. I've read that i can unlock the bootloader with the Motorola tutorial. I must be honest, i'm a little bit lost. I don't fully understand the difference between "unlocking bootloader" and "phone rooted"!

You must unlock boot loader first then flash a custom recovery (manually or there is a tool in the development section) then rooting next.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to install non-Motorola software. With a locked bootloader, the only software that can be loaded on your phone would have to be digitally signed by Motorola.
Rooting gives you administrative access to the system files.
You may not need an unlocked bootloader to get root and you do not need root to unlock a bootloader.

I tried to install TWRP (any version available) but it take like 1 minutes to show the home screen and im not able to "swipe to unlock". So i have installed Philz recovery and then installed lost101 Retail Brazil 5.0.2 Stock ROM (Optimized) v1.1a. I'm playing with it right now and so far so good.

No, you can't. You can't flash anything not-sony-signed on stock phone.
Locked bootloader with stock kernel is completely closed and protects system partitions.
You must unlock you bootloader to do anything you can find in these forums. Absolutely no other way.
If you wish, you can try searching on Play store an app (launcher) that emulates Xperia X home launcher. If there's any, it will be limited in comparison with the solution provided in the thread above, as it will not change System UI elements.
Regarding unlocking, please enable "OEM unlock" in developer settings (tap many times on "build number" in settings -> phone info ). Try again to check your Unlocking possibility in service menu.

Locked Bootloader, Config Says "No" Can't Unlock, But Have Root... Am I stuck?

Well, I had to pull out my previous phone, my Tmo D6616 Xperia Z3. I replaced it when the battery was all bloated and could explode, etc. I replaced it with an LG G5. And, I have the horrible GPS issue with my G5 that just doesn't work well at all. This bugs me. I travel with my family enough that I use it and has caused some wrong turns, etc. I want to replace it, but don't see any good deals in my situation since I have no number to port-in or a new person to bring on the plan.
So, here I am checking on what I can do with my Z3. I've replaced the battery, got a new case, and also replaced the screen protector... just like a brand new phone, except the ROM is really outdated. It is currently on the latest OTA from Sony, Android 5.0. I did check to see if there is a more recent stock ROM and there isn't.
I want to install a new ROM, in which I should be able to backup the TA partition since I am rooted.
When I do the *#*#.... code, then check to see if the bootloader can be unlocked, it says no. Because of that, am I out of luck?
Am I able to use root to unlock the bootloader and install another ROM?

If it says "no" to unlock the bootloader, then you can not unlock the bootloader.
You can, however, use root and recovery.
Check out https://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/guide-rootrecovery-how-to-root-install-t3017056. Just stick it to xperia Roms. Search the forum, I think Marshmallow is the latest.
As far as I know, other Roms than Xperia are not recommended for a locked bootloader. But there are other, xperia roms, for a locked bootloader Z3.

I was able to get recovery installed, thanks for that. I am not so sure about the MM rom, however. I haven't seen one for the D6616. That would at least make it a little better to work with.
As the title says, I'm wondering how to remove the demo software from a few live demo units i've gotten my hands on.
I'm gonna give it to my kid to use around the house to play games and such.
The bootloader unlock is allowed, and just wondering how to go about doing this.
I'm a noob to rooting in general, but I rooted and custom rommed a Samsung S2 and a HTC M9 many moons ago, so I understand some of the basics.
I know I could send it out to a phone workshop to get them to remove the demo software, but they want 40£ to do the job.
Too expensive If I could do it myself.
So, where do I start? What do I need to do first?
Unlock the bootloader, then root the phone? What comes afterwards?

I've managed to stumble my way through using pixel flasher to update my P7Pro to the latest fw with root. Only need root so I can record calls, should I lock the bootloader now I'm done?
Also how do I update in future please without having to wipe, use pixel flasher and patch as I've just done?
I like to think I'm quite tech savvy but the guides for the P7Pro have gone over my head :/

Not unless you want to brick your device. You need to be completely stock before relocking your bootloader (unless using avbroot, but you should have a deep understanding about how it works beforehand).

And you can't flash a factory image to fix a phone on your own when it's soft bricked. It might have to go to a shop for repairs.

AFAIK, relocking the bootloader requires wiping the device -- much like unlocking does -- and if you're unwilling to set everything (including anything on your /sdcard internal storage, not to mention all apps and their settings & system settings) back up from scratch (as any good complete backups require root access), this might not be what you wish to do.
And, if you had managed to successfully relock the bootloader, you could simply run the in-system update (OTA) that would update without wiping -- or even manually applying OTA from the recovery.
But there are hardly any benefits in re-locking the bootloader (after unlocking it) -- even if one was to a paranoid degree of security; which is the only major reason to (I can point you to the discussions that had taken place on it here, if you wish). If you don't want to run into any issues, you could simply run the stock ROM without root and be hardly impacted by it; with the added benefit of having the option to advanced recovery options and/or rooting options open to you in the future if need be...

*it just occurs to me you meant to never lock bootloader because it limits options; not the risk of hard-bricking the device -- in which I wrote the following with that assumption. I'll leave the following comment as it is still sound advice, but I apologize in advanced that it doesn't quite relate to what you meant...
I mean, I feel doing Google's official Android Flash Tool is a safe enough method; it wouldn't do well if Google's own tool bricked their devices using their tool...at the very least the tool ensures that the stock factory firmware flashed matches the bootloader version and automates the fastboot commands so when re-locking the bootloader, it has the least potential to brick the device...
Exactly. there is no official flash tool from google, that's why I personally won't recommend to keep bootloader locked. If it's bricked with no working recovery mode, not even repair shop can fix it. all you can do is RMA to google get new device. no edl mode or anything else will help, fastboot is the official flashing method.
If you're referring to the "Android Flash Tool" that's no flash tool at all. I haven't tested it, but to me it looks like a WebUSB browser plugin. Reading the requirements it works with adb commands, usb-debugging and fully booted android is required. Therefore cannot unbrick devices.

I'll just chime in here because I have recently unlocked my bootloader but I haven't been able to root it yet and I haven't had any issues with safety net.

That's of course another aspect. Good point. If you rely on SafetyNet or it's successor Play integrity, do not unlock bootloader. AFAIR the latter one can't be cheated.

There are some benefits like some banking apps, streaming apps and games beginning to work. So it really depends on what is important for the user. I don't like flashing random mods to make apps work on rooted/ bootloader unlocked devices, primarily banking apps.
