Question Aggressive closing of background apps? - OnePlus 9

I've been really looking at OnePlus phones for a few years now and it looks like I might be ready to pull the trigger and grab the 9.
But then I started reading through this Reddit thread, discussing how the OS is far too aggressive in closing background apps, to the point of preventing notifications and even causing phone calls to be missed.
Is there any truth to these claims?

Did you eve read the thread or just the first post?
Cause thread is just complaint about android and not a problem specific to OnePlus.
But sure why not. People keep buying OnePlus because they love missing phone calls, appointment notifications, chats, emails, etc.

Power management, destroyer of worlds.
Don't use it and Android will run fine...

Whoa, settle down.
Given that I've never owned a OP, I asked the question to hopefully receive some decent feedback, which is what I would normally expect on an XDA forum, not a response such as this.

I have used many OnePlus devices and using 9 Pro now. Yes, it is still aggressive in closing apps. No matter what you do, it still closes apps. I don't miss any notifications, but they come a little late though. Not all the time, but few times.

Do you have Developer options available?
If so see if it shows Standby apps.
If power management isn't being used, all buckets should show as active and their set state unchangeable.
If it shows the buckets in various states, power management is active.
In Samsung phones it's always a Samsurg power management app layered on top of Android that causes this. Simply turning it off stops it and the erratic behavior.
Android manages it's self then with much more reasonable but effective power management perimeters that don't interfere with the phone operation.
If you can't toggle it on/off you can try finding and disabling the apk responsible.
You can also try toggling all buckets in Standby apps to "active".

Alrighty, still stands. You weren't sure if you wanted to buy OP because on Reddit someone thinks Android closing apps is OP thing.
Yeah, people keep buying OP cause they love missing phone calls, notifications and constantly closing apps, it's definitely a OnePlus problem, best to avoid OnePlus.

[Q] How to Password Protect Android Shutdown?

Hi, I was wondering if there was any way to password protect shutting off an android phone. For example, when holding down the power button and clicking "shut down" on the popup menu, I want to have to enter a pin in order to shut off the phone. I have a Motorola Droid. I'm rooted and running CyanogenMod 7 (if it matters). Thanks!!

You have found the one thing Apple trumps Android with! My entire paradigm has just collapsed around my fragile psyche!!
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick.
I guess I wasn't clear enough. I just used shut down as an example, which would be flawed by a simple battery removal. What I'm actually going for, is to make the popup menu (the one with shut down, airplane mode, silent) not pop up unless the phone is unlocked. I don't want some random person to be able to pick up my phone and put it in airplane mode or silent mode. I know that it is possible, because there is actually a toggle for it in the settings of the miui rom.
Bump bump bump!!!!
Apple trumps Android???? HaHaHa
Never has, and with regard to this thread and the desire for a password protected power button," now (2012) especially.
***HTC EVO 4G LTE***
Can't remove battery... and possibly others?
I believe this app would have to restrict access to the menu that pops up to shut down, as well as override the ten second reboot feature of the EVO LTE.
Needless to say, I have searched a little first for it in the EVO LTE forum among others, but there seems to be a reason to revive this thread now!
Hope I'm not acting like a NOOB as described in the . . *ahem* . . . "Welcome" video...
If anyone read this thread and also needs/needed an answer, please bump it and/or included a link to the thread or page or anything that has a definitive answer.... I know I'm not the only one who would greatly appreciate the help!
:good:? O.K....
The Nexus 4 doesn't have a removable battery and such a feature would be great for a stolen phone.. The only way to shut it off would be to adb into it.
Im also looking for this feature to protect my Nexus 4 if atole.
Hmm...

I know I started this thread a WHILE ago...but especially since a lot of the newer phones have non-removable batteries, this seems like a must. What about some way to disable the popup that appears when longpressing the power button (with airplane mode and stuff on it) from the lockscreen. So, you would only be able to access this after unlocking the phone. This is actually been baked into the MIUI Rom, and I'm wondering why others haven't adopted it. Does anyone know if this feature could be ported? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard.
AGREE 110%
This is a HUGE flaw in the smartphone world. I'm glad my Nexus 4 has no removable battery and I feel all phones from now on should follow. Why make it easier for the thieves? I've tried to find an app or something out their with no luck. I messaged Lookout Mobile Security about this BIG issue and hopefully you guys can request it as well here https://www.lookout.com/help. Just click on Send a Request and then just sign in. Hopefully they can implement this vital feature in their security app. If theirs any smart people out their who can make this feature on their own I applaud you. Your phone will let you know where its at even if its off using Lookout online, but without out the phone screaming (a feature within Lookout that makes your phone emit a really loud sound) it's like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Either click on the link and let them know you want this feature or create one yourself. It just makes security apps on ANY phone totally useless without this feature.
Completely agree. I submitted a feature request as well. Let me know if you hear anything

I just though about the same thing yesterday & to my surprise there is no such app. This should've been the most easiest thing to make I believe, just a pin to switch off.
Why hasn't no one thought about this??

Skype 2 video available

The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better -- you'll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.
http://blogs.skype.com/en/2011/06/smile_skype_for_android_with_v.html
Figured I would drop this in here if anyone has some know how and wants to look into it to see if there is anyway for us to have this on our phone. Doubt it though considering it requires 2.3 which seems to be the standard for google video chat and stuff, but hey, its worth a shot!!!
Found some more info. Tested and still didn't work but apparently on our device but confirmed on the SGS2. Here is the link for the guy who got it working.

yep. the official requires gb and in the list of device check. with device check removed, almost all with gingerbread can use it.
man, so much we can't do without gb. This phone should have launched with it.

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

hey, this is gonna sound like a really dumb question and way off topic but can you tell me how your notified when someone posts. I have always been one to read through forums daily but have never gotten too good at participating, as you might tell as I have been a member for 3 years and have very little posts. I personally have to try and remember the threads I participated in and see if someone replied. This seems very redundant but I don't see a better way to be notified. Thanks in advance
Is anyone's phone dying quickly after installing this. I even tried signing out and closing the app but my phone legit drains 10% an hour on standby. So I deleted the app. Now my wifi is turning on and off and can't keep a constant connection. Help?

I personally have seen no change since installing it, as for the wifi thing are you rooted and running any rom of sort of just stock? I have seen some wifi issues with the roms. Don't know if maybe the app sparked the problem or what but maybe you can backup your apps and reinstall. Good luck

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.
how are you guys even getting it to install? is it actually working?
yes please, can any one confirm that the video call on Skype is working on the infuse?
regards
no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Yes, my phone's battery started draining in about two hours after installing Skype, so I uninstalled and things are better again now.
Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

[Q] Anyone else having some issues with the S6?

Got the phone yesterday, and playing with it today, I'm noticing some issues with the phone that I hope can be corrected, because I'm kind of regretting the purchase.
First off, auto brightness turns itself off constantly. Every few minutes. Browsing facebook, twitter, etc and going nowhere near the controls, all of a sudden my screen with double the brightness for no reason, and when I check, auto brightness is unchecked in the pulldown menu. VERY annoying.
Opening links in Hangouts or Google Messenger to Chrome occasionally lags the phone out completely, or the click registers and does nothing.
I'm hoping that this is either a defective phone I can have replaced, or something fixed with a quick software update, but it's aggravating to deal with. Jumping from the Nexus 5 to a non-AOSP phone has me hesitate enough, and this isn't helping.
Edit: Just remembered, I turned off Samsung's keyboard and I'm using Google's official keyboard, and the Samsung keyboard keeps enabling itself! It's not actually switching to the Samsung keyboard, but I'm literally sliding the switch to "off", and it's sliding back to the on position on it's own accord.
Can confirm, auto brightness turns off automatically.
Sent from my SM-G920T using XDA Free mobile app
Do a hard reset. Chances are that all of the issues will be fixed.
Touch wiz lag is awful after installing all of my apps. I'm also wondering why I have to swipe to unlock even when it's set for just fingerprint.
Couldn't say anything about Touchwiz, as I'm using Nova Launcher. Only get lag when I'm clicking links, as mentioned. Going to do a factory reset and see what happens. I REALLY hate doing this without Titanium Backup, and Helium was buggy as all hell. For the initial setup, I ended up manually installing all the apps I had on my Nexus 5, which was a pain in my god damned ass.

I'm not rooting until they either confirm tripping knox won't affect Samsung Pay, or there's a way to root without tripping it at all.
So I just did a hard reset, and of COURSE there's no way to keep your storage intact when you reset (**** you Samsung), the device switcher won't work with the Nexus 5 (Again, **** you Samsung), and I had to redownload every app by hand. As much as we ALL hate Apple, iTunes backup & restore is SORELY needed on Android.

I'm not seeing much lag if at all, but I WAS seeing the issue with the Auto-Brightness, until I did a hard reset.
Battery issues are pretty bad, but it seems to just need a software update, or an updated radio. The Cell Standby drain is strong with this phone.
Of the lag I did see, my phone actually froze up, gave a snowy image on half the screen, then crashed. Only happened once, so I'm not worried (yet).
One thing that's annoying the hell out of my though: Swiping the notification shade down takes a few tries, and sometimes clicks dont register. I never experienced this before on other phones, but I've noticed it happens more when I hit things with the sides of my thumb vs touching it flat. very odd.

Huawei's decision to use its own memory manager....

Ok, so this was a huge problem on the Mediapad X1. Where huawei's memory manager kills apps in the background. Why do we need task killers today Huawei? Please stop
On the Mediapad X1 there were a bunch of apps like Google Hangouts that would get killed even though you tell it not to get killed via "Protected Apps", having your texting app not run in the background is bad as you can imagine. So now I have an X2 and it seems like this Protected App thing actually works better, however I noticed today that the bluetooth services were getting killed in the background as it would not pair with my car until I turned on the screen. Because these are built in services you can't "Protect" them.
Just posting this here so hopefully Huawei can see it and fix it
But seriously, they should just use the memory manager built into android and not try to monkey around with, we don't need task killers any more.

What tweaks are normally required?

I have had Textra recommended to me as a work-around for MMS texting glitches. I am used to that now and will try it but if I have problems I will try your app. By tweaks I just meant that so much of what most of you do is not what a "regular" cell phone user would know. I had no idea there were memory manager things I might need to address. (I haven't done that before). That is why I am here. To learn about new things and to be prepared as much as possible for when (at this point it is "if") my 702L gets here!

You have to go into startup manager and check each app, protected apps and trust each application, add it to startup, and in permission manager you have to trust each application. I agree though, I wish this didn't exist as there's no need for it. If you're rooted you can take it out but you'll lose the Do Not Disturb mode as it is baked into it.

I was rooted on the X1 and getting rid of the Power Manager still made stuff die in the background, it was pretty irritating. So far with the X2 it mostly works. As far as I can tell only bluetooth dies (Which I can't add to any of those apps as its a system app)
The X2 is such a better phone than the X1. I hope Huawei keeps on top of bug fixes. With a generic android memory manager this phone would be truly awesome.

Thanks for the help, aj... just something else I have learned. I learn something new every day! Now if the shipper would only prove it has actually been shipped! Lol!

I got my X2 today from fashioncoconuts on eBay and everything is good. It even came unlocked. I'm liking these eBay sellers.
Edit: after I did a factory reset it said the bootloader was locked. Now when I use Google Maps it tells me I must update my Google Play Services. When I do my Google Account Disappears and my Play Store doesn't open. I'm beginning to dislike Huawei's implementation of their apps. Blocking certain apps from being installed is totally lame on Huawei's part. Now the waiting game begins for my unlock code. I'm giving them three days. If not both phones are going on eBay and I'm done with Huawei. Rant over.

Good Ole fashioncoconuts. They raised the price big time by the time I was trying to jump in and also told me when they answered my message that they were temporarily out of stock. You got a GREAT deal on that one! Worth the wait!

Yeah. They told me they shipped it out on the 5th and didn't until the 15th. Now I know why. They raised the price too right after I bought it. A lot of these eBay sellers jack the price up way too high. No one should pay more than $399 for it. I'm just glad it came already unlocked. It seems Huawei is no longer sending emails to people with the unlock codes anymore.
I use bluetooth in car, and it connects automatically without turing screen on. There must be some other issue.

Ok, this morning bluetooth connect up fine (I'm on B108)
But I noticed the Lux (screen brightness app) had stopped in the background.
Services shutting down in the background was a huge issue on the X1 and for the most part seems to work on the X2 but it seems some things still get killed in the background once in a while even though they are "Protected Apps"
I'll keep monitoring and see if I notice anything else...

is no one concern about the edge sense failure in the announcement?

I saw the phone's announcement, and in my opinion they should never let Charlie Chang present a phones again.
It was one of the most awkward announcements I watched. He looked like he is going to explode, and every feature he presented it looked like he is praying to god that it will work.
but that's one thing.
during the presentation he tried to activate google assistant through the Edge Sense, and it didn't work, then he tried again and it failed again, then he made the most awkward "ooopss" he could make, while trying again couple of times until he continued presenting the google assistant without mentioning or talking about the incident (which is understandable but still troubling).
the weirdest thing is that I can't find any review or post that talks about it, I thought the press will destroy Htc for this screw up.
for me it's really troubling, this gimmick can be nice, but it's the first time we see something like this on any phone and I have doubts about its quality.
what do you think?
Meh, to say that I've never had stuff like that happen on any phone I've owned would be a huge understatement.
Had a unit in hand to test it one week ahead of the official announcement. On my test unit the Edge Sense worked really good, after getting accustomed after the first 30 Minutes and configuring it to my pressure sensitivity in settings.

Jeah some other people already tried Edge Sense and said something similar like @5m4r7ph0n36uru said. Its working okay or good - better then many expected. But for me its just a nice to have. Lets see how much they can improve this feature with future Software updates. Maybe its just a feature that ends up being a public prototype which would also be okay. If this feature is any good they will probably improve the hardware behind it in a future device.
I mean its the same with the fingerprint scanners, the first and even second version in the iPhone was quite bad in my opinion. The one in the 6s is good, but the ones before where too slow and the failure rate was too high (for me).

I wouldn't read too much into it - could be nerves, could be the phone wasn't set up properly for him, old software, etc.
Microsoft launched a version of windows (I think it might have been Win98) and during the launch they encountered the Blue Screen Of Death... it didn't seem to have much impact on their future!
I'm not too worried. If it doesn't work well I will just disable it. The phone is still nice.

They will update it. As HTC told in the same briefing, they are already planing to implement Double-Tab as a possibility to take further actions with Edge Sense, though they couldn't tell the date at this time but only that it is on the list. So I guess they are definitely planing to implement more gestures by such a step making short press, long press and double press available. With two different force settings, this would give us six gestures in total to configure for separate actions.
Something further is App based actions that'll be implemented to change the action resulting from a short press depending on the App you're using.

I hope so and i am sure they will but all I'm saying is that the hardware will be limited like i said with the fingerprint or another example the pressure sensitivity from the surface pen. In the first iterations it only had 256 different steps now they have around 2000. (not sure about the exact numbers here )
My hope is not too big about this squeeze feature in the first iteration but i am curious and will give it a try.

I thought the same Totally agreed with you... But I'm still buying the phone.. I hope after 1-2 updates it will work better.
I am lucky I wasn't in his shoes. Very awkward indeed. His hands were shaking.
I don't think it will damage sales. And in a live event anything can happen.
I don't think it even had to do with edge sense TBH... I think it had to do with the assistant apps themselves and probably the internet connection within the venue.
Mine works well do far. I just need to remember about it. I've left it starting the camera and it's good.
Honestly, I was hoping the edge sense would have worked just as the early videos showed of a couple walking the street and navigating the app drawer with the edge. Maybe version 2. But that was sick!

Can't say I've every been walking the street and needed to navigate the app draw. I have shortcuts for everything already. Actually only time I navigate the app draw is when I'm adding a shortcut lol. But I see what you saying. Maybe if they added volume up down or scrolling, but don't think that's how it works.
well... it would probably have worked better if she took them off..
