[SOLVED] Help me recover my mother's Note 6 Pro data PLEASE! - Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro Questions & Answers

Hey everyone!
My mother's Redmi Note 6 Pro logic board got damaged and the screen is black. I tried replacing the LCD and it still does not show any image, but the touch is working fine. I have accepted that the phone is dead but I need to recover the photos and videos from it with a black screen while the touch is still functional.
So, I need someone to record his phone doing 2 things:
Unlock your phone from a PIN lock screen.
Connect the phone to PC via USB and switch to transfer data mode.
I would be more than grateful if someone could help me with this. Your video will guide me on where to tap on the screen (because it is dead!). It is the only way to save my mother's data.

EDIT: I managed to unlock the phone and select the "Transfer files" after connecting the usb cable. Thanks a lot to anyone that tried to help. The issue is solved.

Hello there,
I just did exactly what I described in the original post. The touch was working but the screen was not displaying any image. After a lot of tries, I managed to unlock the phone, connect the USB cable and select the "transfer files" options on the pop-up window. I did it all blindly but thankfully it worked!

Have you tried using adb to pull your files?
When you say your screen is broken, do you mean it doesn't display and touch isn't working? Or is screen not displaying but touch is working?
If you're unsure, try seeing if you can tell whether touch is doing what it is supposed to be doing but just can't see it. Devices in that state can still be worked with to pull data by finding and looking at screenshots of what you'd be selecting and using the screenshots to guide you where to touch to get to where you can connect to PC and transfer.

Hi Everyone, I am in serious problem and require help.
I have OPO and recently it got washed off in rain. Right now there is no display its completely black but gestures are working. I gave it to the service centre but they said that nothing could happen as it may brick the phone as water has entered into motherboard.
I want help to recover some few photos from it as they are of utmost important.. My phone is locked with a scrambled pin lock. If you have any solution to it, please share.

Hook your phone to computer and let connection be for transferring files.
Then use computer file manager to find your files. Easy.
All you need to do is remember your swipe, then after unlocking swipe down from top for change notification of where to tap to change the connection type.
Prolly find photos of everything online.
Also, you can run adb commands to pull files from your device.

The simplest method is to connect one plus one from twrp and transfer all the data

Firstly I've looked on all black screen help pages but none of them help. Last week my galaxy j3 2017 model died. The screen is just black, but the phone 'works', and by that I mean if I ring it the phone rings, notification sounds still happen but screen is still just black. I've charged it, let it die, tried all combos of reboots but nothing. Using an online guide, if I plug a USB keyboard in and tap my code followed by enter I hear the phone unlock (yes it has a pin screen lock). I then tried to plug into a laptop, but using Windows explorer, my phone is there but going into the phone, the folder is empty. I'm guessing this is because I can't enable file transfer etc on the phone. I'm at a loss wgag I can do. Samsung said I can take it to a shop to be fixed, but I have a few weeks of data and files I want to try and rescue first. Can anyone offer any advice please?

your screen is dead on your phone and your not going to be able to get the data from your phone. All you can do is send it in to samsung.

If you haven't taken this for repair yet then you can confirm a dead screen if you see nothing at all when restarting the device.
However it IS possible to rescue the data. There are various ways to do this with a blank screen. Obviously the easiest is via MTP. There is also Smartswitch.
Adb is also an option.
This would be trial and error until you hit the right spot to enable usb transfer.

After my S6 dropped flat on the floor it's screen went gradually violet and then black. Now I'm left with working digitzier but I can't see nothing. In order to access my phone I'd like to connect keyboard via OTG and access developers settings and then enable debugging so eventually I could connect S6 with my PC via Vysor app. Would someone try to do it on their phone and then post the keys combination here, please? It'd be much appreciated.

if this doesnt pan out, try a MHL adapter. also, knowing what version of android you were on before the screen went ka-put would help for the key combos

I'm pretty sure that you cannot use MHL with S6. The version was 7.0 I think.

Problem solved. I decided to share the solution in case someone has a similar problem. Long story short: take screenshots with the key combination specific to your phone and view them on your PC so you know the approximate position where to tap on your screen to select some option. I found that one comment the other day, posted under one of the videos on how to control a phone with a broken screen. Since I'm a new user here I cannot share the external link to the video.
The author of the comment was Adam Cepnik so all credits go to him for this simple, yet genius solution. Here's the comment:
"If your screen is black, but you can control the phone by touchscreen, connect the phone to your PC. Then try to unlock your phone (it will take a few tries, but it is possible). This should unlock your phone's internal storage so it should be visible from the PC. Then find out how to make a screenshot. The screenshots can be found somewhere in the internal storage via PC. Then you can see a picture of the phone's screen and attempt to control the phone according to the screenshots (take them everytime you touch something). It is slow, but it can help you to enable the debugging even with black screen."

But what I'm sad about is that a LOT of people have the broken screen problem where I was digging around XDA looking for a solution for them...
My main question for them is HOW can these millions of people with broken screens simply mirror their phone and their file system between Android and their PC... WITHOUT having set it up prior to their screen breaking?
I don't know the best answer to that painful question.

Always using a good case and using the SD card as a data drive are the best ways to avoid this.
The mobo can easily be damaged in a drop that breaks the display from the G forces alone.
In which case if on internal memory the data is lost for good.
Plan ahead... after the fact is many times too late.

I believe there is a solution even for people who didn't plan ahead.
We just need to collectively focus on that solution.
For example, I can manipulate an Android screen using adb from the PC even to the point of tapping buttons and bringing up hidden Activities, so someone who knows what they're doing can control almost everything.
The hardest problem, of course, is turning on USB debugging (up to and including Android 11) and then turning on Wireless debugging (in Android 12 and beyond), which is likely the most important step that we need to collectively focus on being able to do retroactively.
While I listed hundreds of requests for solutions in the original post, one of the more detailed threads that maybe we should focus more effort on might be this one...

Maybe, but never count on it especially if the data is encrypted.
Critical data; once it's lost, it's gone.
I've lost a data base before. There's no substitute for careful planning and redundant hdd backup stored isolated and never in the same locations.
One near lightning strike is all it takes to wipe a drive or phone unless its Faraday cage shielded. It doesn't need to be a direct strike to do damage, it can be many yards away. The energy can be enormous and can couple inductively/capacitively through the air.

We're trying to solve a difficult problem.
Moving forward, I see that some people in the two hundred articles I've linked to in the original post claimed to have solved the problem so I'll be delving into those (and writing in the DM system to the authors) to find out more.
Many of them used an OTG cable, which I have no experience with, so I ask other kind-hearted and purposefully helpful people to assist in ideas of how to work a broken-screen phone using the OTG cable.
Many others used adb while libmtp and FTPUse, WebDav, and SMB/Samba/Cifs may also work (depending on the situation).
The simple solution, which I'm positive exists, may be already described in those threads.
I ask those who have a positive problem solving attitude and knowledge of Android (both of which are required) to help pitch in to find a good solution so that many others benefit from our purposefully helpful joint efforts working together as a team.
Some of the hundreds of threads I listed in the original post purport to have a solution which we need to delve into further, such as:

The two main problems with retrieving data from a device with a broken screen is the fact that the majority of users do not have USB debugging enabled(or any other setting that allows connection/access to the device) in their device settings when the screen breaks and the fact that a broken screen usuallly means the user can't unlock the lockscreen. If USB debugging isn't enabled, connections via USB will not have access to the device and if you can't unlock the lockscreen you can't access anything on the device via USB or WiFi.
If you can't make a connection with the device, you can't retrieve anything from the device. There are some methods that require the device being rooted that can retrieve data from devices with broken screens, but, if the device isn't rooted when the screen breaks, the user can't root the device to take advantage of these methods if they did not have USB debugging enabled before the screen was broken.
Its a scenario of being caught in a "catch 22" situation. A situation where "you can't do that without this" and "you can't do this without that" and the two of them are each preventing you from doing the other. Enabling USB debugging is the main roadblock and there is no way to enable USB debugging without connecting via adb(which won't work because it requires USB debugging also) or by flashing/applying a modified build.prop file with USB debugging enabled in the build.prop file which can't be done unless the user has TWRP installed because most devices will not allow flashing modified stock files.
There are 2 solutions to this issue:
1) replace the screen.
2) find a reputable tech shop that can extract the data directly from the chip via special hardware/software solutions.

There are no shortages of "problems" that prevent people from being successful... but what this thread is about are solutions... where I would like to refer others to this potential solution from DiamondJohn which was recently added to one of the hundreds of XDA threads I previously referenced when I listed all known solutions (and attempts) in the OP above.

Again, this solution requires that the user have this option setup and enabled before the screen is broken. If a user has not setup/enabled the ability to use this method before the screen is broken, they will not be able to use this method after the screen is broken.
Let me simplify this. If a user has not enabled USB debugging or has never authorized adb access on the device before the screen breaks, there is absolutely NOTHING they can do to access the device to retrieve data other than repairing the broken screen or physically extracting the data directly from the chip by connecting wires to specific points on the chip.
It doesn't matter what method you research, they ALL require that the user have something setup/enabled/prepared before the screen breaks, if they haven't setup/enabled/prepared these kind of accessibility options before the screen breaks, there is nothing they can do themselves to retrieve the data.
There are options to retrieve data from devices if the user has prepared certain settings and accessibility before the screen breaks, but there are NO options available to retrieve data from devices that have NOT had these settings and accessibility prepared beforehand. In other words, the specific problem that are trying to find a solution for does not have the kind of solution that you are looking for. It is a pipe dream, a goose chase. It all boils down to whether they were prepared beforehand, if they weren't, they are screwed, period.
