I currently use a cassette adaptor because fm transmitters do not work well for me. What I would like to do is connect an A2DP bluetooth adaptor to the cassette adaptor for hands-free use. Can this be done and which device would you recommend? Is anyone currently doing this?
Also, I don't have an aux input on my stereo.

I have never seen anything like this before but that doesn't mean it's not out there. I would just pick up a decent mid range car stereo that already has bluetooth. I would imagine you can pick one up for around a hundred bucks.
I don't think its possible.

Thanks guys, I really don't want to spend the money on a new stereo plus installation. I still have the stock 6 disc cd player with cassette in my 2002 wrx. I was hoping the spend $50 on a external device, oh well. Thanks again and have a good one!
If I understand what you are asking, the bluetooth adapter would need a line out - like a headphone jack. I have not seen that. There is a company called PAC that makes adapters that turn the connection to the 6 disc changer into an aux in. You might check them out.

You have it right, it would be:
Cassette Adapter -> Bluetooth adapter
I took your suggestion to check out the PAC adapter but unfortunately, they only offer a FM transmitters with bluetooth. I guess I'll have to use an FM transmitter. Thanks for helping.
This is almost what you are looking for:
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16855995461 but is designed for in home use (wall adapter).
I don't see why this couldn't be made to work in a car if you can power it, or why someone wouldn't make something similar designed for a car. It's not that unusual what you are asking for.

NP. Unfortunately, I guess they don't have the wired interface for your particular vehicle.
Hey, I got exactly what you need! I just got a new car and it has Bluetooth but only for the phone. So I had to pick up this adapter to get A2DP working for streaming my music to the car. The adapter plugs into the AUX, standard 3.5mm jack.
Check it out:
http://www.amazon.com/Miccus-BluBridge-mini-jack-Rx-Bluetooth/dp/B0038MA11U
Takes a couple tries to get it paired and connected to the Epic, but it works.
This would work. OP didn't have an aux jack but that's ok he can just plug in the cassette adapter off of this.

I had previously ordered the Nokia Bluetooth headset from eBay for $15 from Hong Kong and it lets you plug any 3.5 jack into it. That worked out ok until I lost it. They have a few up there still that could be worth trying out.

Just wanted to report that the device I ordered will not work for me. In the picture of the device, I saw an input hole but it was for power, not a 3.5mm input. Sooooo, I guess I'll give up on this project.

Actually all you need is a "barrel" adapter. It would allow you to attach your cassett adapter to the bluetooth reciever you bought. They are very common and cheap.

I'm happy to report that:
Cassette adapter + 3.5mm female to female coupler + bluetooth audio receiver = SUCCESS
I'm not an audiophile but the quality of the output is the same as listening directly from the cassette adapter. 95% of the time, I listen to podcasts so quality is not a big thing for me. I did test with Pandora and Google Music and both sounded good to me. Today is the first day using it on my way to and from work ~30 minutes total. I will report back again once I've had time to use it extensively. I hope this helps others in the same boat.
Thank you everyone for the help with getting this working. For those that celebrate Happy Thanksgiving and for those that don't Happy Thursday! I now have one more thing to be thankful for.
Very cool to hear you are up and working! I'm looking at doing something similar with my home stereo to play music across the living room with no wires and that way I can keep my phone and text an take calls easily. I'll be checking back here to see your report on sound quality as that will be important to me for music listening.

The sound quality is the same as it was before routing through the cassette adaptor. I only have a 15 minute commute from work, so I can't speak on taking phone calls while connected. I did try to make a call once as a test. I could hear the other person clearly but they couldn't hear me even with the mic close to my face.

Hi everyone,
I know this has been confirmed elsewhere on the net, but I didn't see anything here so thought I would pass this on to the more hardcore audio fans here.
I tried all my USB DACs last night - RSA Intruder, Apex Glacier, HeadAmp Pico, Leckterton UHA-6S.MKII and all are working with the Xperia Z.

I recently got the MW1 (only €19!!!) and learned about DACs (apparently there's a pretty good one inside, Wolfson). Now using this together with the MDR-1R and my Xperia Z! Really nice.
The DACs you are talking about are standalones? How would you use these and why? And why so many? Sry noob questions, but would really like to know.
Yeah, standalone DACs/amps. You would use these because they give you better sound quality than the phone itself does, and also the amplification makes them able to drive less sensitive headphones, which phones are unsuited for. Now that Sony, HTC, and Samsung all have USB audio in their phones it means I never have to care how good or bad my phones inbuilt sound quality is, I know I'll always have awesome sound quality regardless.
As for why so many, well, no particular reason apart from I wanted to know which I liked best and I'm taking my sweet time about deciding!

Thanks for the explanation.
What do you mean by less sensitive headphones?
If I understand, newer model phones all have a DAC inside already?
In my case, because there's a Wolfson DAC in the MW1, would you recommend using MW1 or just using Xperia Z (in the case of audio quality) ?
PlugAndPlay
Is it a simple plugAndPlay or do you have to restart the phone with the DAC plugged in?
Would love to attach a Behringer X302 to my (future) Xperia Z
It's only 42Euro at Thomann.de
According to the Android App USBAudioRecorderPRO
i can record a signal with the Xperia Z (hopefully)
Think that output is also possible?

All phones have a DAC inside, a DAC is a digital to analog converter, and is required for the playback of digital music and sound.
The advantage of bypassing the phones internal DAC, which is what is being done with USB audio, is that if a phone has a poor DAC (or good DAC that is poorly implemented for that matter) you're not stuck with that.
Headphones and IEMs have varying sensitivity to a given input signal - some require more power to drive effectively (and when I say drive effectively I mean drive to both good listening volume levels and adequately control the driver of the headphone to get the best from it). That's a fairly simplistic and ham-fisted explanation right there to get the basic gist across, if you really want to understand 'sensitivity' you should take a look at somewhere like Head-Fi and so some reading about sensitivity and input impedance (for starters). As a general rule IEMs tend to be more sensitive than full-sized headphones.

I haven't tried input, I expect that will require USB Audio Recorder Pro. I can check that with my generic Logitech mic.
Connection via a hub should work fine, at least for output, have done that with my S3 and Note II and it's fine. Not sure about simultaneous input and output via a hub though.

You can use a Y-split cable according to some at Head-Fi, however I believe it will only charge the attached peripheral and not the phone.

Hi, I am really interested in knowing more. Could you tell me how you plugged the Xperia Z? Is it a direct plug and play using USB out from the Z. ANY SPECIAL CABLE NEEDED OR JUST THE CHARGER USB CABLE?
Appreciate the info. :good:
Hi,
I'm very interested in this thread.
I bought that device for my xperia z, ESI Dr. dac nano.
But it doesn't work "power consumption error message", because this dac is usb powered :s.
I think the xperia z will only accept dac/AMP which work with their own battery, do you have a device to test this ?
i'm also very interested in the hrt microstreamer but it is also usb powered, so i won't buy it until i have a proof it can work with an xperia z.
I think your not new in "the word of usb dac/amp" could you give me an advice if i want to buy a battery powered usb dac/amp, as small as possible and with a sound as good as the microstreamer(only basing on review :s)?

I believe the only way is via USB...but you have to use an app as Android does not build in USB recording as does Windows. I use this app along with a USB interface and a microphone on this phone and my tablet. Works great and the dev is a great guy. He also makes a DAW (there's a free version) for recording and editing.
that's... too bad then. thanks for info but.
btw, any suggestion for usb audio in? or usb mic? thx.
anyone? " _ "
I use a pair of wired ear buds that have a built in microphone for calls. I'm running CM11 not stock but I just tested and "Sound Recorder" is more than happy to receive its input via the headset jack. I would believe it's just a matter of finding the right converter plug for your guitar.

I have used ASR for recording, works fine over the headset jack. It is a mono source of course. It won't work with a standard 3.5mm plug of course, you have to have the signal on the microphone portion - which is ground (silence) for the standard plugs.
I used the adapter that came with Dragon Naturally Speaking. It has two 3.5mm stereo plugs to one 3.5mm stereo+mic plug. If you use a 3.5mm stereo cable into the mic side of this adapter it works fine.
You could probably rig up something from Radio Shack, but I didn't have to because this worked, and I don't need the adapter for my computer so it was just sitting in the cord box...
thanks to everyone who replied, truly.
it seems that there are 2 solutions...
1) usb sound w/dedicated app
2) cable that turns L/R input from TRS tip to M input on TRRS tip
the 3.5mm/trrs/(left/right/ground/mic) socket on the phone should work as tdcrone mentioned above. as long as a 3.5mm stereo+mic adapter available, or a custom cable that turns the original L or R input into M on the output end.
this is by far the simpler solution, **if such cable or adapter is available**, the caveat emptor is that the record will be mono, and there could be mic gain issues...?
otoh, the usb solution works, at the cost of having to get an adapter and apps for android costs.
@Vegasden: i see that both USB audio recorder pro and audio evolution mobile daw seem to work with usb recorder, and the latter one is just marginally more expensive?
edit: sorry, just realise that one also needs to buy usb audio recorder pro if she/he wants to use audio evolution mobile daw to do usb record
Is me again.

OnePlus is using a passive solution E.g the DAC is inside the phone and not the dongle so you need a dongle without a DAC inside.
Shame their is no Standard with Type C for Audio for OEM's to follow too much fragmentation in the cables/dongles..
