I am just wondering if it makes a difference to first use Force Stop + Clear storage before uninstalling an app, or if Uninstall alone will remove all data an app has stored on the device.
Just checking for the right procedure for an app to not leave anything behind in the non-user accessible device storage (/data) to avoid clutter and fill-up when installing and uninstalling a lot of apps.

Force stop and clear cache: Here's what you need to know
If you have a problem with an app, you might need to do a "Force Stop" and "Clear Cache." But why does that help?

Well, that only explains the Force Stop & Clear Cache, but not the Clear Storage & Uninstall actions.
Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data.
Uninstall: Simply hides app to user, it doesn't get physically removed from storage memory.
When you clear data or storage of an app, it deletes the data associated with that app. And when that happens, your app will behave like a freshly installed one

I am getting the "Low on space" warning and a whole slew of processes that force close on power-up.
I zapped all the large apps I did not care about, cleared the cache from most apps and the task manager summary page is reporting this:
Programs: 253MB/1.87GB
Personal data: 127MB/127MB
Internal SD: 2.66GB/13.03GB
External SD: 6.28GB/7.39GB
The RAM Manager is reporting this:
RAM: 150MB/304MB
I cleared the call logs, text messages, Droid stats and I have a reasonable (approx 100) number of contacts.
The offending system process seem to be Media Storage at 123MB.
Besides this one, my largest apps are Google Earth (14MB), nDrive(7.6MB), Skype. I cleared the cache on all of them.
I have a SGS Vibrant running plain unmodified, non-rooted Froyo.
Any one knows how I can:
1- List the content of that "Personal data" partition to confirm if it actually is the media Storage that hugs the partition space ?
2- Clean-up the Media Storage content ?

Ended up trying to clear messages, contacts, call logs, etc. None of the deletions made a real big dent. Once I was backed up, I just cleared the memory/data from the media storage 2.0.
Once that was done, I had plenty of space again. Weird.
I ended up doing a factory reset.
I am still wondering what caused the situation, since after re-installing all my stuff (including calendar & contacts), I am at 8.43MB out of the 127.
I will keep an eye on it to see if it happenned all of a sudden of if it grew over time. The only thing I did out of the ordinary recently was to test GPS logging applications. They all logged in a file on my external SD, so unless they leaked some temp files it should not be that.

You could try my app to clean a bit:

I will definitely give it a try if it happens again.

Hi,
Surprisingly after installing playing many games and trying out applications, now my phone has only 100mb free space left, which is indeed worrying me.
Since 3.9GB out of 8GB is showing as "Reserve Space and other content" in Zune.
But I need to clear out any unnecessary backup data and applications isolated data so that I can get most of the space back.
Phone: Omnia W
Developer unlocked only. No full unlock available yet.

In Zune you can set your reserved content to about 500mb if you want and you can get other space for storage. Double click on the 'orange' reserved content you will be able to decide how much you want to reserve. Uninstalling apps will get rid of it's storage etc.
If nothing helps, hard reset and you are good to go.
If your phone is interop-unlocked (WindowBreak or similar) you can install WP7 Root Tools and then use it to enable appSiege, which will let you see how much data each app is using up.
Uninstalling an app deletes all its isolated storage files. You can then re-install the app if you still want to have it on the phone. Some apps also have a feature to purge their cached data.
Given how much data you have in the OS, it's possible you're keeping email for too long. You may want to either sync fewer email folders or keep the synced files for a shorter time (most of my accounts only keep messages for two weeks). You can also try deleting your Internet Explorer cache (Settings -> Applications -> Internet Explorer -> Delete History) although that will delete your saved passwords and such too... it's possible to delete just the temp files, but doing so requires high-privilege access to the filesystem.
So I previously ran into issues with Link2SD not recognizing my 2nd partition, so I eventually reformatted it.
However, I've now run into issues with being unable to install any applications, as well as my system data showing up as one massive single block instead of the individual applications - http://i.imgur.com/ksukQGG.png.
Looking deeper, Android itself (and Link2SD for that matter) both report my app data as 0.00b for every single application. However, I know the applications are working because I've been using them. I also know the app data still exists because I went to the exact directory (/data/data/app) and found that the individual app data files were all still there.
So I guess my issue now is how to link the app data back to the app itself? And I would like help figuring out how this happened as well...
Edit:
So here - Aldiko definitely should have data and cache, but it shows 0 - http://i.imgur.com/QBWznRD.png
And this is the error that I get if I try to use the default Android Move2SD option (the original one), or if I try to install an app - http://i.imgur.com/yr2GoUW.png
bump...?
Apparently there are a lot of people who have looked for help on this issue in various forms, so googling all day and looking around has not helped.
I have Android 4.0.4 and a Pantech Burst that has been rooted. I downloaded Titanium Backup and removed some programs that were perma installed by the manufacturer. I backed them up before I did this. Now the system drive shows I have a bunch of space free, 326MB out of 1GB. Using other apps I am not sure. "Drives" shows two internal storages "Data" which has 681MB used and 326MB free and "System" which has 464MB used and 77MB free. I assume these are both the internal partition.
Trying to install anything from the Play Store results in a 'insufficient space' except for some really small apps. Since I don't know exactly how much space I have to work with, I can only guess. Uninstalling some apps normally doesn't allow me to install new ones either. Sometimes the phone will just eat the space.
I tried restoring a app with Titanium Backup and it seems to have worked, however the app is no longer in my normal system 'apps' utility. So I can't modify it or uninstall it anymore.
The apps aren't backed up to the system storage, they're on external storage.
I tried clearing the dalvik cache and system cache, this didn't help or do anything.
Any sort of help would be great.

Bro.. Use link2sd app to move apps to system.
Or uninstall bloatware from system.

That's not really what's wrong. I'm not too familiar with android, but I'm pretty sure my volumes aren't reporting deleted space that is actually free. I tried a program like CleanMaster to try and fix it as well as App Cache Cleaner, but they haven't seemed to help even though they reported that they fixed quite a few things initially.
It seems like whenever I uninstall something if I go through the system and look at apps, it shows more free space available. However when I try to install something new, it still says 'insufficient space'. Somehow the free space is not being freed up or marked as free for the system.
I almost want to say Titanium Backup is not giving the freespace back to the system and is instead just marking it as free, but not for the system. If that makes sense. So the system can't use it.
I can use Titanium Backup to restore apps even though the system says I have insufficient storage when I try to reinstall them. I shouldn't be able to do this without free space available. However when I do this I can't see it in the market or in the normal settings > apps on the system and in order to reintegrate it I need the pro version of Titanium Backup. I think TB isn't playing nice with the rest of the system in order to get you to buy a pro version of it.
Imgur links I can't post because not enough posts.

Last week, my phone nearly ran out of storage, upon investigation, I found that the system size had grown to ~8.5 GB. I thought is wasn't all that bad, until I checked earlier that it had grown to ~9.2 GB. Is there any fix to this that doesn't involve a factory reset?
Are you rooted? Clear caches and remnants with SD Maid. Apps like Spotify e.g. and lots of other streaming services can build up huge amounts of cache in a short period of time.
You can also figure out what app is taking up all that space under settings-->apps select an app-->storage.

No, I'm not rooted. I've tried about 5 different cache cleaners, SD Maid included, and none do anything about the system size, just app cache.
Are you sure it's the system partition? Cache is stored on data. Guess you'll have to go by your apps one by one without root. Just open each app in settings and you'll see the size they are and you have the option to wipe it's cache and/or data. Start with data hungry apps like Facebook, play music etc.

Yes, screenshot attached
I'd suggest you install a free app manager from the play store. Doesn't have to be anything special as long as it reads app sizes. Once you know what apps are eating your free space you can delete their caches thru the system settings, or maybe even with the app manager. I don't think you need a factory reset.

Read the rest of the thread; I've tried that, 5 times. The only apps I can suspect would have to be system apps.
Looks like I'll have to reset after all
Alright, that was useless, this is a problem
