Last week, my phone nearly ran out of storage, upon investigation, I found that the system size had grown to ~8.5 GB. I thought is wasn't all that bad, until I checked earlier that it had grown to ~9.2 GB. Is there any fix to this that doesn't involve a factory reset?
Are you rooted? Clear caches and remnants with SD Maid. Apps like Spotify e.g. and lots of other streaming services can build up huge amounts of cache in a short period of time.
You can also figure out what app is taking up all that space under settings-->apps select an app-->storage.

No, I'm not rooted. I've tried about 5 different cache cleaners, SD Maid included, and none do anything about the system size, just app cache.
Are you sure it's the system partition? Cache is stored on data. Guess you'll have to go by your apps one by one without root. Just open each app in settings and you'll see the size they are and you have the option to wipe it's cache and/or data. Start with data hungry apps like Facebook, play music etc.

Yes, screenshot attached
I'd suggest you install a free app manager from the play store. Doesn't have to be anything special as long as it reads app sizes. Once you know what apps are eating your free space you can delete their caches thru the system settings, or maybe even with the app manager. I don't think you need a factory reset.

Read the rest of the thread; I've tried that, 5 times. The only apps I can suspect would have to be system apps.
Looks like I'll have to reset after all
Alright, that was useless, this is a problem

So, I moved all my caches to the SD card, but the browser is still eating up memory. 17mb worth so far.
Why?

Which method did you use to execute CACHES to SD?
I've wondered about this as well since I've moved all my caches, and yet everytime I launch the browser I get a low space warning.
Just started happening to me as well, I haven't moved all cache to sd card though.

where are you checking browser cache? because if you look under the applications you will always see the size of the cache .. no matter where it's located .. under my applications it states i have about 100M of space used on a 74M phone with 40M free .. how do you know it's "eating up" memory?

See, that's strange.
I've moved apps and caches to the ext2 partition using a sript moveallcachesext2.sh
And my memory slowly kept going down to 7 meg.
I backed up my bookmarks and under applications deleted the browser data.
And I went back to 25 meg free.
But it's slowly going down again.

I used the instructions(or a script. don't remember which) that I found here on xda
You probably missed the app_thumbnails directory in the browser's data directory. This one was taking up far more space (17 MB in my case) than the cache when I was investigating why my all of my storage space was gone.
I'm not sure what this this is. The files in it don't appear to be images (the linux file command can't identify them, anyway), and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the browser to be keeping track of thumbnails of anything beyond tabs (which should die when the browser is closed -- not be collecting indefinitely -- unless of course there was a bug preventing them from being properly deleted). Does anyone know what data is stored in app_thumbnails?

moveallcachesext2.sh only moves cache.
That could be why your internal memory keeps getting lower when you dl apps.

No, actually. I moved the apps using a differnt script/command.
I didn't say it was getting lower using the Apps, I said it was getting lower using the browser.
Why oh Why did they make the G1 with such a pitifull small amount of internal RAM?
LUCIDREM, BTW, it's your JFvMOD I'm using.
how do you clear the cache once it's on the ext2?
Don't mean to thread jack, but didn't want to start a separate thread on sth. that may have been already answered. I just couldn't find it anywhere(and I read the whole 57 page thread on moving the apps to the sd card by Lucid, and then some more threads)Anyway....
I have moved the apps and data using LucidREM's MOD and everything is working fine. My only concern is how to clear the cache once it's on the ext2 partition? I'm presuming that's where i moved it with the lucidREM's copy.sh data script.
And is there any way of knowing which application/cache goes where, or viewing the ext2 files, cause I as well see a decrease of my intrnl memory. Not sure if it's a cache or an app, or both.
Thanks in advance!
P.S. Just wanted to say BIG THANK YOU! to all the devs on xda. If it wasn't for you guys I would've already given up on my phone.
ok i was having this same problem up till today when i found stumbled onto a post over a androidcommunity.com. i dnt have the exact link ill post it up later but all u have to do is run the "moveallcachesext2.sh" in the terminal emulator again and also for this to work you can't clear the browser in manage apps or within the browser. It should stay around 3mb all the time. Okay so after u run the script again browse around a lil bit and see if it fixed the problem. And if not open terminal emulater and navigate to the data/data/com.android.browser cache and type ln -s /system/sd/cache/webviewCache webviewCache and then browse around and make sure your broswer stays round 3mb...remeber dnt clear cache or ull have to redo the link
I'm having the same problem. With cache and history cleared, the browser is eating up 27 MB. I really need help.
if you did the moveallcachesfat32.sh, and you keep going to menu > applications > manage applications > browser > clear data (or something)
it will erase the symlink and therefore the browser caches to sd link will be erased and you would have to redo it.
So starting off with this phone I know it doesn't have the best internal storage. When apps are moved to the SD some of the app stays behind on the internal storage, I know that. I have had 2 shifts. My first one i dropped, cracked the screen, and the insurance gave me a new one. On my first shift at the time I had about 70mb of free space left when I sent it in. Before sending it I made a titanium backup and restored that on my shift I have today. When I restored it I had about 120mb of free space. (NOT THE PROBLEM READ ON)
So the point is something in the system is causing massive storage to fill up over time, and its not apps. I have force moved apps and that only helps a little. Is it a certin cache that I can clear? please help!
At the moment I have 60mb of free storage, that is with the app cache cleared through App2SD
Right I have the following : System ROM 219MB , Internal 222MB , SD Card 8.32 GB . When you long press on an app in TB it should give you the option to move to SD card. You shouldn't have to force move an app. When you restored all your apps did you restore apps and data? Or just the app? Also after restoring with TB you need to make sure the app was restored to the correct place. There's an option I usually check in the preferances before I restore all my apps. It restores to the previous location you had the app. Hope that helps.
I restored the apps and data... This isn't a problem with tb, its a problem with some storage/cache something building up in the system

Don't know if your restoring SMS with something. But if your are sometimes that takes up hella space. Did a phone that had over 25MB of SMS messages restore back onto it on internal mem.
i will see, i also use a tool called disk usage. you have probubly heard of it but it maps out everything and the amount of space it takes up. you can narrow the results to a certin cache or whatever. ive seen that apps like pandora are taking up space in the dalvik cache. Its only like a mb or 2 but still. do you know anything about apps storing things in the dalvik?
what is the dalvik even for anyway?
I've been trying to go back to stock today, so I've wiped a few times, but I've got 430MB total space internal, with 366MB free
and.....
i dont understand what this has to do with this thread

I beleive dalvik cache gets recreated everytime you reboot. But, about Pandora is it on the SD Card? Or internal mem? I listen to a TON of music. When I had Pandora on internal it was up to 12MB .So I moved it to the SD card, only 536KB on internal now.
My app is on the SD but it is storing over 1mb on internal
If you have DiskUsage go to the [root required] section and press 'App Storage'
if you can find pandora you will see that most of it is stored in the dalvik cache
Sorry I don't use DiskUsage app. Your right about how much is on internal. Mine reads 1.28MB.
any idea what it is storing there?
Drawing a blank on this, I'll keep looking. See if I can come up with something. But I'd probably head on over to theMikMik and see if somebody there can help.

Any other suggestions here? My wife's Shift is having this problem. Constant notification about low storage space. Can't even download any new apps. I have not rooted her phone yet, and not sure if I will; I don't want to have her have to go without for any length of time, and I don't think she wants things changed around so much as she just wants the thing to work, not to have to tinker or troubleshoot.

Did you download a lot of apps? Try moving the apps to the SD Card. The path is Menu-Settings-Applications-Manage applications-Downloaded. Then just click on the applications one at a time. If the button says Move to SD card, and isn't greyed out press it. That should free up some space. If that doesn't work since your not rooted, I would just try a factory reset.
clear the folder /data/tombstones. App crashes and such create rather large files that can eat up quite a bit of space. Also check the cache folder at the root, failed market installs will have file fragments in there as well.
Apparently there are a lot of people who have looked for help on this issue in various forms, so googling all day and looking around has not helped.
I have Android 4.0.4 and a Pantech Burst that has been rooted. I downloaded Titanium Backup and removed some programs that were perma installed by the manufacturer. I backed them up before I did this. Now the system drive shows I have a bunch of space free, 326MB out of 1GB. Using other apps I am not sure. "Drives" shows two internal storages "Data" which has 681MB used and 326MB free and "System" which has 464MB used and 77MB free. I assume these are both the internal partition.
Trying to install anything from the Play Store results in a 'insufficient space' except for some really small apps. Since I don't know exactly how much space I have to work with, I can only guess. Uninstalling some apps normally doesn't allow me to install new ones either. Sometimes the phone will just eat the space.
I tried restoring a app with Titanium Backup and it seems to have worked, however the app is no longer in my normal system 'apps' utility. So I can't modify it or uninstall it anymore.
The apps aren't backed up to the system storage, they're on external storage.
I tried clearing the dalvik cache and system cache, this didn't help or do anything.
Any sort of help would be great.

That's not really what's wrong. I'm not too familiar with android, but I'm pretty sure my volumes aren't reporting deleted space that is actually free. I tried a program like CleanMaster to try and fix it as well as App Cache Cleaner, but they haven't seemed to help even though they reported that they fixed quite a few things initially.
It seems like whenever I uninstall something if I go through the system and look at apps, it shows more free space available. However when I try to install something new, it still says 'insufficient space'. Somehow the free space is not being freed up or marked as free for the system.
I almost want to say Titanium Backup is not giving the freespace back to the system and is instead just marking it as free, but not for the system. If that makes sense. So the system can't use it.
I can use Titanium Backup to restore apps even though the system says I have insufficient storage when I try to reinstall them. I shouldn't be able to do this without free space available. However when I do this I can't see it in the market or in the normal settings > apps on the system and in order to reintegrate it I need the pro version of Titanium Backup. I think TB isn't playing nice with the rest of the system in order to get you to buy a pro version of it.

First of all, sorry for my English. It is not my native language.
I'm having issues with my Redmi Note 7 Pro (rooted and running MIUI 10). I can't install any large apps from the Google Play Store or even APKs using other app stores like Qooapp or APKPure. The problem seems to pop up only when I try to install large games like Call of Duty Mobile, Vainglory, PUBG or Arena of Valor. I've been able to install other small apps and even games where the large file downloads occur INSIDE the game itself, like Dragalia Lost, Another Eden and Raid: Shadow Legends without any issues. It is only when I attempt to install a large game (usually +1gb) that I see this problem. Whenever I try installing through the Google Play Store, the download happens normally and then the installation fails silently when the download progress bar reaches 100%. And whenever I try using APKPure, for instance, I get a message saying "IO error. Not enough space available for instalation", even though I've got about 100gb of space left in my internal memory.
I've searched online and seen some people recommending clearing the cache memory of the Google Play Store app and Google Play Services, uninstalling any updates on the Google Play Store, rebooting my device, etc., since the problem could be caused by a lack of enough cache memory available to install the file, but these solutions didn't help me at all. I hope someone can help me troubleshoot and fix this issue

Was the available memory enough then?
Close any apps other than Play Store or APKPure while installing those game apps. Have a try.

Thanks for the reply! Sorry, this solution didn't help either. I closed every app other than the Google Play Store and tried installing COD Mobile again. I got the same problem. The download goes up to 100% and then silently fails.
I don't know if this is relevant, but when I try installing through the Play Store, the download goes up to 100% and then fails showing a message that says "Waiting for Wi-Fi," even though I am downloading from my Wi-Fi connection already. When I tap the button to download anyway, it downloads again all the way up to 100% and then fails and gets stuck at 7%. This is very confusing
If I try installing through APKPure, it'll just show the same "Not enough space available" message.

Yes, any other small apps I've had no issues with (the Reddit and Amazon Shopping apps are a couple of examples).
And as mentioned, even games that show as a smaller-sized file on the Play Store but include a much larger download ingame (like Raid: Shadow Legends, which shows as 92mb on the Play Store but requires a 600~800mb download on startup) have worked without any issues. It's only the large apps that fail upon installation.

The large games are failing because the apps are downloaded in cache and then installed in your /data partition, not your internal storage.
It doesn't matter how much internal storage space you have, what matters is how much space your /data partition has, you don't have enough space in your /data partition to install the large apps, you also might not have enough space in your cache partition to properly download and install the apps.
The reason why the apps that download additional data inside the game are working like they should is because the apps themselves are installed in /data partition and they install just fine because you have enough space in /data partition. But the additional data that is downloaded inside the game does not install to the /data partition, it is installed/stored in your Android/data folder in your internal storage, you have plenty of internal storage so it installs without conflict.
One way to get the large apps to install is to delete some of the apps that you installed to clear some space in /data partition, if you clear enough space, you can install a large app with no issue.
Or, you can try repartitioning your device to increase the size of your /data partition.

Thanks for the reply. I tried deleting a bunch of apps and ended up getting rid of about 2gb worth of data. Unfortunately, that still didn't do the trick I could delete some more, but those are apps I'd actually like to keep.
Do you know how this repartitioning process works? Is it complicated to do? I'm a little bit scared of messing with the flash memory of the phone, it was actually a (more knowledgeable) friend of mine who rooted the phone for me. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I started looking a little bit into this and I read somewhere that perhaps getting an SD card and moving the data of some other apps from the data partition to the SD card partition might release enough space for the large apps to install without issues. Does this sound at all feasible? That would free me from having to mess with things that could potentially brick my phone.

Actually, it is possible to install your apps directly to external sdcard, the drawback to that is you sacrifice a bit of performance because running apps from external is slower than if the app was internally installed.
Another possible option is to use the Adoptable Storage option, it is designed to format your external memory as internal memory so that the device sees internal and external as one continuous "drive", so to speak. I wouldn't recommend using Adoptable Storage though because if the external sdcard gets corrupted it results in a non-working device that has to be recovered and you'll most likely lose your saved data.
Finding a mod that allows installing your apps to external is the better, safer option. It might be a bit slower than installing to internal, but it's easier to fix issues if something goes wrong.

Thanks a lot for the guidance. I'll look more into both the SD memory option and the repartitioning option and I'll post another message once I find the solution (hopefully soon). Nonetheless, I can't help but wonder what could've caused this. Is this a problem that all devices have? Or could it be linked to the rooting process?
Regardless, thanks again for the help.

I can't say for certain, things are different from one device to the next, you never know what kind of bugs are gonna happen.
Android is inconsistent, you could have different devices experiencing the same issue but they may not have the same cause. There can also be an issue that has a known solution on "this" device or "this" android version but the same solution doesn't work on "that" device or "that" android version. As they say, your mileage may vary.
Try asking in your device specific forum if there is one here for your device, or, try asking in another thread for this device that deals with rooting or a thread that deals with a similar issue to yours. You may get better answers from members that own the same device or members that have experienced the same issue.

I am just wondering if it makes a difference to first use Force Stop + Clear storage before uninstalling an app, or if Uninstall alone will remove all data an app has stored on the device.
Just checking for the right procedure for an app to not leave anything behind in the non-user accessible device storage (/data) to avoid clutter and fill-up when installing and uninstalling a lot of apps.

Force stop and clear cache: Here's what you need to know
If you have a problem with an app, you might need to do a "Force Stop" and "Clear Cache." But why does that help?

Well, that only explains the Force Stop & Clear Cache, but not the Clear Storage & Uninstall actions.
Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data.
Uninstall: Simply hides app to user, it doesn't get physically removed from storage memory.
When you clear data or storage of an app, it deletes the data associated with that app. And when that happens, your app will behave like a freshly installed one
