This randomly started happening to my S7. Works for about 5 seconds and then freezes. Even in Safe Mode. - General Questions and Answers

The phone was working fine before I fell asleep. When I woke up, i was presented with this mess. I have not downloaded anything either. I want to back up my files before I try to Factory reset. Anything I can do? Would updating from SD option be pointless?

Clear system cache... can't hurt.
Try hooking up to the charger and see if that gets it.
Are you using a package disabler?

Thanks for your reply man. Tried clearing cache but it did not do anything :/ and Im not sure I am using a package disabler but I dont think i am?
I have done some research and my understanding is, I need to flash with TWRP to have a custom recovery that will have a 'Back up' option in the Recovery Mode menu? Is that correct or am i way off?
Also someone told me that flashing with TWRP would erase my data, which would be pointless as I would only flash to recover those files. But i have read posts here suggesting that it would not erase the data? I'm kinda confused

ohhh no that look like "pink line of death"
have you drop your phone?
or forget it on your sofa and sat on it?
or accidentally lie down on it while it's place down on bed?
nonetheless it look like you need screen replacement

Can you enable usb debugging in 5 secs? Hope no password

I have flashed my phone and i get about a minute to do stuff in my phone now. So i think i can turn on USB debugging mode
How do i go about recovering via adb? I know its in recovery but how do you use it to recover data?

Fixing a bricked Nexus S

I had a Vibrant before and flashed it constantly. I soft bricked it several time and it was easy just to Odin back to stock and try again. Before I begin to flash Roms on this phone I would like to know how one would fix a bricked Nexus S. I searched "bricked Nexus S" and didn't come up with much.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Flash a stock img thru fastboot/adb. Just as painless as Odin was if not easier.
Sent from my Nexus S
Yeah I figured that much but I have never used ADB before. What are the commands to flash a stock img and where can I get a stock img? I already have ADB set up, serial # comes up when I enter - adb devices. I'm ready to root and flash but I want to be prepared for anything. I don't want to panic for ten minutes like I did the first time I bricked my Vibrant.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
You should be able to snag a stock image from the development section. As far as what adb commands to use check out any of the root tutorials in development.

Hi Everyone.
I have my Nexus S for a 3 days - it's brand new. Last night i turned it off. It was about 50% charged. Today i can't turn it on. Phone is dead. What's wrong? There is no any response, even during charging (black screen).
Phone wasn't rooted. It has Android 2.3.2 update.
What can I do?

not enough information is present. you can attempt to get into bootloader / recovery, plug USB to the computer. When plugged, does the computer make a plugged in noise? if it does.. try turning it on, try using adb on it, etc.
as a last resort: if its not rooted or modified in any way, you can go back to best buy and exchange it since you said you've only had it for 3 days

First thing to do is pull the battery, let it sit a minute or two, then put the battery back in and try to boot.
Also, try booting into recovery or fastboot. With power off, press and hold volume up button, then press/hold power on switch. You should enter fastboot mode. From fastboot menu, select boot to recovery. The phone will reboot and you'll get to a screen with an "!" and an android robot on it. At that point you press hold power, then press/hold volume up (make note that this is the reverse of what you did earlier).
Once in Recovery, try wiping cache from the menu.
Reboot.
If still no good, then repeat the process but pick factory reset/wipe from the menu in recovery. Note that this will wipe all personal data and apps off the phone but it won't touch your sdcard contents.
The case with pull battery - not working.
I can't enter fastmode using 2 keys combination.

Last option is to try to trick it into Samsung's Download Mode (see the Odin thread in Development section), but if the keys aren't recognized you can't soft boot into it so you'll need a dongle with a resistor to get there.
Sounds like it's truly a brick at this point. You'll probably have to return it, but I'm concerned about returning a phone that has your personal data on it without being able to wipe it. Doesn't seem like much way around that at this point if you can't get fastboot or download.
get the 301k resistor JIG and then you can go into the download mode even without the 2 keys + usb plug
you can always make your own JIG if you have the materials at home or a nearby Radio shack
Thx for all Your advices
Problem was with the dead battery. The battery died during the night - i don't know why. I think the system waren't able to boot up ant start charging process.
My solution:
I took 9V battery, 2 wires and charged dead battery for a while from 9V battery. Then a put it into phone and plug in to wall charger. Charging process started
Now everything is ok
That's pretty scary that it wouldnt take a charge if run down completelty. But hey handy to know incase it happens to any of us,
If you get any repeat i would take it back to get a fresh battery of course (only right to do so).
here's hoping you never need to though

Bricked
Tried unlocking nexus s last night, now it appears bricked. Cannot connect to computer to reflash as it seems to have wiped the driver. Any ideas on how to bring it back from the dead? thanks
I have managed to see the phone with fastboot. I was hoping that fastboot update, would re-image the brick. Can anyone let me know the correct syntax. I am not able to copy an image onto the phone. Thanks again
Noob {MAC User}... Please be gentle
Greetings Everyone,
Okay, so I endeavoured to root my phone last night and was successful. I ran into trouble when the clockwork recovery and superuser permissions kept getting removed each time I reboot.
Now, I'm at the Google splash screen with no way to move forward. I'm a mac user and I don't really get the adb thing. Got adb to work with mac from a youtube video, but still not sure what commands to run.
What I've done so far:
- wiped cache
- wiped/factory data reset
- retraced my steps by using terminal to setup superuser permission from this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=927838)
What I think:
- maybe in all of my clicks I removed the ROM, so the phone doesn't have a ROM to work with.
This maybe a really infantile conclusion, but I know there's a solution (had a rooted G1 that I flashed all the time and thought I bricked once but was able to get it back to stock).
Eagerly waiting for a reply... no cell phone if this can't be fixed.

It would be easier to help you if we knew exactly what you did that caused the problem. You said you tried to unlock it...you mean fastboot oem unlock or something else?
If you can get into fastboot, you're not totally lost, but the computer needs to see the phone to do it.
I'm working in a vacuum here on what your real problem is, but without further details, the things you can try are boot into recovery (from the fastboot mode select boot recovery)...if you're stock recovery, press/hold power, then volume up once you see the android "!". From there wipe cache and whatever else it will let you wipe. Try rebooting. IF that didn't work go back to recovery and try a factory reset of the phone (will delete all your apps and stuff on the phone, but not on the sdcard (pics and stuff).
If none of that works, you can still try getting Clockwork recovery on the phone via fastboot. Boot phone to fastboot and then on computer type the command "fastboot flash recovery <put file name of recovery version you're flashing here>"
Once in clockwork, you should have access to adb via the computer. On your computer go to the Development section here and download any of the various nandroid images posted there. Now you use clockwork mounts and storage menu to mount the sdcard. Then use adb to "adb push <insert path and filename of your nandroid image here> /sdcard"
Unmount the sdcard with the clockwork mounts and storage menu. Now go to the backup menu, select advanced restore and find the nandroid image and restore it.
With any luck, you should be able to boot into a fresh phone.

stuck on Google logo

After updating around 20 apps (altogether ), I noticed the phone was not functioning normally so I tried to reboot it but now it is stuck on Google logo. I've never unlocked the phone nor used any custom roms. I'm on the latest stock rom 2.3.4
I tried removing the battery and putting it back but didn't work. Vol. up + power and then Recovery didn't work either. It gives me a triangle with ! in it and stops right there.
I also tried the USB Jig that forces the phone into downloading mode but it gave me a screen that asks (Unlock bootloader?) with some warnings but I don't know how to accept that. Niether Vol buttons nor Power button worked there
I didn't want to mess up with the phone until I hear from you guys. Please help
up.......
You might have to actually root it or use the Samsung exe back to factory. That is if you don't want to mess with it because if I ware in your position I'd be going back for a new phone. You did nothing wrong and you have 1 year warranty on it.
FYI, the triangle with ! actually is recovery. The UI is hidden until you hold power and press vol down.

Thanks man, I didn't know about that
Is wiping the data (factory reset) going to delete my stuff stored on my SD card? like pic., music, vid. etc?
and do I need to actually wipe the data or will wiping the chache only work?
Factory reset reverts your phone back to the way it was when you got it.
That means all your account settings, device settings, installed applications etc are gone. Everything stored on your SD card will remain there - it's a different storage. The good thing about our Google phones is that you only have to login to Google once and all your stuff is back.
You can try wiping the cache first and see if that works, it won't harm anything. But if that doesn't work, I'm sure a factory reset will.
Good luck.

[Q] Phone can't access storage

All of a sudden, no apps on my phone can access the storage, any app that needs to just gives an error.
In recovery mode, if i try and format the cache partition, it can't access the drive and if i try via USB all i get is a few screenshots i have taken since this started happening, which are 0kb.
Any ideas? Thanks!

It's not common at all, but a bad file or maybe a virus can corrupt the storage. Did you unlock your bootloader? If not then do a factory reset + wipe storage in settings. Or unlock your bootloader because that does the same thing

Help - this is a difficult one

Okay from the top, have OPO that had paranoid 4.6 Beta 2 working just fine. Was playing with settings(dumb idea) and changed the runtime to ART like i have on multiple other phones just to try it out. Phone rebooted and upgraded all the apps like it should, but about 5 seconds after it booted, screen froze for a second and then it rebooted. Once it rebooted it was up for 5 seconds again and then rebooted again. thus started a continues reboot loop.
Using the five seconds i had i was able to race through settings and switch the runtime back to dalvik. this caused the normal reboot and fixing of apps however once it finished the boot process it began the reboot loop again and there was nothing i could do to stop it.
I booted to recovery and attempted to reflash the last update, that failed.
attempted to wipe cache and dalvik cache and that failed.
attempted factory data reset, that failed
NOW is when i made a mistake, on TWRP i checked system wipe as well as data and cache. Wiped everything.
So, phone was then entirely devoid of OS which is a slight problem. I was able to get into fastboot however and flash cm11s which i figured would fix it, false. Now when it boots the system ui crashes over and over continuously and it wont become stable. Went back to recovery but my twrp was gone and i just had cyanogenmod simple recovery. attempted to get to fastboot mode but its apparently nonexistent, i tried every combination of commands possible to get there but cant. so now im stuck with an unusable OS and a useless recovery and no way to get to fastboot mode that im at least aware of... if there are any other details that could help feel free to help, ill post pictures once i figure out a way to do that.
please, for the love of God, help me.
If you gold the power button for about 15 seconds then it should turn off. Then hold volume up and then press and hold power while still holding volume up for a few seconds and it should boot fastboot mode. Try erasing userdata from there to see if you can recover from the crashing.

I tried that a hundred times, the problem is once the screen turns off, if you keep holding vol up it never comes back on, its something i have never seen before and its exxtremely frustrating. Its like fastboot doesnt exist.
I wiped out everything on my Oneplus two months ago by mistake. Then my phone wont boot up because it had nothing in it except the TWRP. I tried EVERYTHING, to load a Rom into the phone, but it didn't work. It goes through the motion of loading a Rom into your phone and when you are about to hit the 100% level, it says FAILED. It wants you to check the debugging which you can't because your phone wont boot up. Anyways, I purchased a micro usb flash drive and loaded up the Rom into flash drive from my comp's usb. Then I connected it to my phone from TWRP via the micro usb port. After it loaded up the Rom from the flash drive, it booted up. Hope that works.

The latest twrp supports mtp and you can use adb push to push the file to sdcard. Its really worth learning.

Suddenly my phone bricked. Need help

Phone was working ok yesterday all day, then I has to take a flight to another city and timezone. When I arrived everything still was ok for about 1 hour, then I wanted to login in the hotel wifi and it wasnt showing the networks. Tried turning on mobile data ando it wasnt turning on either. Rebooted the phone, didn't work. Then I tried to go to the settings and I got an error message "Settings isnt working" and shuts the window. Another message that suddenly appears is HTC Mobile data Lite isnt working.
Tried with info settings > settings > clear data and cache. Didnt work.
Rebooted by holding power and volumen buttons, didnt work.
Went to boot options it says is locked and that ”File" wasnt found.
They boot to recovery gets stuck on the red warning with a triangle image.
Lastly the phone got stuck on reboots, after I do they security pattern it shows they splash screens and logos, reboots and asks for the pattern again.
Never flashed or did something with system files or kernels on this phone.
Wanted to try factroy reset but when I was able to go to the home screen and connect the phone to a Mac using the app AndroidFile Manager..? It said 8gb available to select, which seemed wrong as my phone was almost 60gb full, so wasnt sure it was going to be a good backup.
Any help on what can I do to backup ando solve the issue?
Thanks!
Clear system cache if that's an option.
Factory reset.
If that doesn't get it it will need a reflash. The flight may have caused a Single Event Upset, which is more likely to happen at high altitudes.
The hotel wifi is also suspect, root kit.
Lastly it could be a mobo failure or other hardware issues.
Is possible to clear cache if I can't access home screen? Any chance of backup before factores reset?
I don't think was wifi, didnt have a chance to connect to it or something
I think your stock rom has encrypted your phone's memory . If you want to S-OFF you can try a TWRP recovery otherwise you can install a RUU rom at home. All your data will be destroyed.
Figured out how to wipe partition cache...didn't help. Still stuck on boot loops.

Try starting it in safe mode. May take a few tries.
If you get it into safe mode, grab the data.
That's probably your last hope.
This is one big reason I always use a phone that supports an SD card. I use the SD card as the data drive; all critical data goes here. I then redundantly and regularly backup the SD card.
The data drive provides a buffer if the OS crashes/burns and most times is unaffected.
Everything I need to do a full reload/restore is on my data drive. It's time staggered backed up on multiple flashsticks and hdds.
I've lost whole databases before; lessons from the U of hard knocks tend to stick... and suck.

Already tried safe mode before your reply. Didn't work either.
Oh well, gonna go for the factory reset then.
Thanks for your help.

Try a few more times... play with it.
Been trying, keeps rebooting after entering the security pattern.
I can go to emergency call, it shows com.android.phone is not working but if I click wait after a while it shows the phone UI, I can take screenshots and move the volume bars... one time I don't know how or why, I left the phone while I read something else, on the pattern screen and I had the "Do you want to transfer files" message ... so this gives me hope that I will be able to either go to the system 1 time, or that the ADB is detected so I can pull data.
Tried fastboot boot twrp.img from power shell, but got the warning device won't boot. I guess because I didn't unlocked it and wipe the data first.
Found stock ROM that matches my CID/MID/Carrier, etc. Can I use this to flash something into my phone and fix the booting problem without wiping data?

The problem is likely in the user data partition itself. Start flipping firmware around all bets are off. Be a lot safer if you could get it into safe mode to retrieve the data.

Gonna keep trying to enter system then, maybe I get lucky.
The zip I downloaded had other zips inside and I can't open or extract them, windows says they are not valid. So I downloaded a different ROM from a different site, and had the same issue. Is this normal? Don't want to be flashing corrupt zip files obviously

The only boot loop I had where I needed data eventually booted into safe mode by itself after a couple tries at normal booting, convenient.
The next time it happened, a few days latter I was ready, lesson learned, always backup data.
As for the files, you're in deeper then I ever had to go. A factory reset be easier and safer if the rom isn't the source of corruption. You got yourself between a rock and a hard place. Personally I would have written the data off by now and factory reset. Of course that's because almost all the data was backed up.
Use the exact same rom.
Someone here can spot what's wrong though with your methods... have patience.
Seems I'm screwd. Did a factory reset, now I'm stuck on the Internet configuration screen after selecting language. Networks don't appear and I got the same "HTC Mobile Data Lite" error screen saying isn't working.
The top bar has a lock and only NFC is turned on. Can't pass that screen.

Didn't have one, then I inserted it again, no change. This was the original problem when I got in to the hotel, couldn't turn on wifi or mobile data.
Not sure what else to try. Wanted to try with a custom ROM or something, but can't unlock bootloader, because I can't get the identifier token since I can't get to the debug settings to turn on OEM unlock.
Fastboot oem unlock command is giving me an error.
The status of my software (on the bootloader) says modified, not sure if is it because I tried to boot a twrp.img (but afaik I understood should have been wiped after a reboot)
Extracted the zips with the RUU tool and got some img files, maybe I should try to flash some of those files.
Before you try anything else get the right procedure from an expert here. Otherwise you may trash the one or two shots you might have have.
I'm not that expert but there are members here that are. Sorry to see you having so much trouble...
I had the same problem,
This is processor fault .
the solution that i found to solve this problem is turn off the phone and heat the back cover under the camera using heatgun or hairdyer for about 30sec, don't make it too hot, then power up the phone and long press hardly the back cover under camera using your tumbs while HTC logo comes up. This makes my phone succesed booting up and the signal show up again. Once the phone turn up, just backup everything.
If the signal not showing up and wifi not working , you can use bluetooth tethering or using "gnirehtet" for reverse usb tethtring from computer.
*important : when the phone turn on, go to setting to delete the lock pattern/pin to make your phone not locked.
