Reseting and starting over. - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Questions & Answers

I plan to reset my fold and start over because OneUI 3 ruined all the features that made my phone so great. Has anyone else tried this? I don't have wifi, so it shouldn't automatically get reinstalled and I saw some hacks on line to keep this from happening. Would love any alternatives to bring back quick launch multi window (GoodLock/MultiStar functionality) , change recent apps layout (GoodLock/Task Changer functionality) and Bixby quick commands type command functionality that I can't get to work since the upgrade, as well as some of the split screen issues I've been having with the keyboard overlaying the window you're typing in so you can't see it.

[Q] oops, trashed out ADW

I have an Optimus M from MetroPCS and I installed ADW. While playing around with the settings, I accidentally deleted the last home screen, so now I'm stuck in a Force Close loop for ADW. I can't get to the home screens (I guess there aren't any), I can't get to the ADW settings, etc. The only thing I can get to is the notification bar. So I can't bring up any programs or anything, including the terminal. USB debugging isn't enabled and I can't get to that setting to enable it, so I don't think I can use adb to help.
Is there anything I can do to get out of this loop? I used to know how to hack my way around a T-Mobile G1 (installing custom recoveries, roms, etc.), but with this Optimus M I don't even know how to flash the stock firmware back on it. I'm not sure how to do a factory reset, but I'm not even sure if that would work anyway, since I may have deleted the custom launcher that came with the phone and I don't know if it has the stock launcher (or any way to enable the stock launcher if the LG launcher isn't there).
Can I get to a terminal from the recovery console and delete the ADW settings file or something to get it to go back to default settings? I even have a good backup of good ADW settings I made before I made the changes but I can't get to a point where I can restore those settings.
Any ideas?

Keep pressing home key and check if you have market running. If so, go there and install ADW launcher again or launcherPro
Thanks for the suggestion. In my case, I couldn't get the little "running apps" view to show up while holding down the home button either, but I was able to get to the market a different way. I don't know how many other people will run into this exact issue, but I've fixed it, and here's what I did for posterity's sake.
1. Get out of the force close loop. The way I did this was to pull down the notifications bar and I happened to have Cardio Trainer running in there so I could get to some program OTHER than the launcher itself so the home screen wasn't attempting to load. If you don't have anything running in your notification bar, you might send yourself a text message so you can get in the messaging app through the notification bar.
2. Press and hold the search button, this brings up voice search. Say something (anything), which will bring up a Google search.
3. Now search for ADW Launcher. What you're looking for is a site that will offer you a "download" link, which will load the Market.
4. Uninstall the launcher and immediately reinstall it. Fortunately, ADW wipes out its settings when you do this, and all should be back to normal.
5. Don't delete your last home screen again. In my defense, I clicked the little X to delete my last home screen just to see what it would say, and figured it was safe since it always asked me to confirm before deleting the other home screens. Nope, it just killed ADW forever instead. Lesson learned.

[SOLVED] Limited functionality

This thread was originally titled "System wide problems", please see the reply for the solution.
Original post:
"Hi all,
Been forever since I've made a post to XDA, but I have a problem I'm not able to solve without taking an inconvenient plunge. I should mention that my phone was 100% fine yesterday evening, but since I was asleep last night it seems to have run out of battery, so this morning I charged it a bit, then I turned it on to a world of problems.
Ok, so let me run through a list of just a handful of the problems I'm having right now...
Totally stock (not rooted) Nexus 5 running Android 6.0.1 (Security: 1 March 2016)
1. Home and App switch soft keys don't work
2. Notifcations are not working at all
3. Notification shade wont pull down
4. Widgets cannot, and will not load
5. Cannot get into Developer options "Developer options are not available for this user"
Seems I'm not the only one to experience the strange bug, some folks over at Android Central were experiencing the exact same thing toward the end of last year.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/an...me-button-not-working-many-more-problems.html
Some people to have resolved this issue using "adb shell am start -n com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity" but I cannot get into Developer options to turn on USB Debugging (unless I don't need to?)
What I've tried already...
1. Cleared all Google App data "CLEAR ALL DATA"
2. Tried to make another user, just flashes and goes back to "Opula" my main and broken user profile, never creates the other profile, same thing happens when I press on Guest too
3. Safe mode, but the problem persists there too
4. Virus scan, turned up a whole lot of nothing
I'm now at the point where I'm thinking I'm going to have to do a Factory data reset (the "inconvenient plunge"), even though I think I've backed everything up the "Touch to sync" option on my Account > Google doesn't do anything, neither does the "Sync now" from the drop down menu. So despite having explored my Google account on my desktop I cannot see if it has backed up my Apps and App data, but it seems to have backed up my contacts and such.
I'm going to get a third party app to back up as stuff as I possibly can as well, but even Helium is useless now since I cannot get into the Developer options so enable USB debugging.
Anyone got any experience with this issue or how to resolve it?
Many thanks to everyone in advance."
Hi all,
Just wanted to update this thread to say that I did a factory reset and the phone is now fixed, but I wouldn't to give a more comprehensive account of the problems I was experiencing with the phone until I did the factory reset.
List of problems
Home and app-switch soft keys not working (back key is working)
Google Now 'on tap' not appearing (cause of home key)
Cannot see notifications just says "No notifications" (but the light and sound work fine when a notification is received)
Cannot pull down notification shade to toggle controls
Widgets cannot be added and will not load
Cannot pull down the immersive mode overlay
Google Backup not working (after 8+ days)
All types of syncing not working
Phone's storage doesn't appear on PC when plugged in via USB
Cannot access developer options (due to active profile level)
Cannot create or switch users
The best advice I can give to mitigate such an unusual problem (that appeared totally out of the blue on a cold boot) is use Google Backup services, keep on top of syncing, and manage your data via your Google account! Or as an alternative, manage and maintain manual backups.

Recents and home buttons stopped working and no notifications appear - any ideas?

Very strange one... My wife's VZW Pixel (I have one too) suddenly experience a bunch of changes that we can't find the trigger for. I just spent a hour troubleshooting every possible thing and I am stumped...hoping for some guidance.
Known facts
1. She changed nothing
2. At least one app (siwftkey) auto-updated... I uninstalled it but that didn't fix it
3. She was on the December patch when this happened. I updated to Jan but that did nothing.
4. Device is stock, unrooted with Nova launcher (I tried the pixel launcher and the same issues appear)
Symptoms:
1. Home and recents buttons do not work on any screen... Back button still works
2. No notifications appear on the NAV bar and nothing appears when you swipe down. Sound notifications do work however. No apps are blocking notifications and the individual app notifications are set up properly
3. Double press the power button no longer goes to camera even though that gesture is toggled on
Factory reset is my next step but I am traveling right now and she will need me to set everything back up so I am hoping there might be a fix short of a full reset.
And suggestions greatly appreciated.

Last resort, you can backup apps and data using Helium, then factory reset it. Then restore with Helium. To use Helium, you'll need a PC though.
Any other results on this?? My pixel just hit the same problem! It is in an area that has no internet so it is causing all sorts of issues. I don't know if the two are related at all.

Unfortunately not... Did a factory reset and that cured it. Not one issue since then. Must have been so random app she downloaded that created a conflict.

Happens with me today. I was messing around with the device and when I clicked in a YouTube video link on notification shade the device suddenly soft reboot.
Since them, home and recentes buttons won't perform their actions. They still vibrate and home button animates on touch. Status bar shows none notification, even I knowing they are arriving via notification sound and quick settings shade won't pull down completely. My tiles was rearranged as well. No mobile connection either.
I'm running lattes official Oreo. Never unlocked and never rooted my pixel XL 128.
For me a factory reset through settings did the trick.
Would be very good if Google could light us about this issue. No rouge apps on my device. In fact I'm using a few
his is an Android issue.
Step instructions:
- Download Nova Launcher. If you cannot from the google play store, search for it on Chrome and download an apk version
- Install it (you may get a pop up advising you need to let apps installed from chrome, go to settings and allow it)
- Once installed, click on Open. This should launch the Nova Launcher
- Long press anywhere on the screen
- Choose Widgets.
- Look for the Activities widget and hold and place it anywhere on the screen.
- Scroll down to Setup Wizard. There's two, one that's "Setup Wizard" and the other "SetupWizard" without a space. Choose the first. There should be an option under it called ".SetupWizardUpgradeActivity". It might be slightly different for you pending the version OS you have but that's what came up for me.
- Select that to create the widget shortcut then click to open.
- This will bring you to the setup wizard and then just click Next all the way through (turn off any preferences you may have in the past)
You can uninstall Nova Launcher afterwards if you want. You don't need to set it as default.
Perfect!!! Thanks.

Text message issues

I know i saw others complain about lag, but as i am texting the side bar with the settings pops up randomly constantly as im typing its driving me nuts! Anyone have this issue or know how to fix? Its not just in text its on internet browser too as i type another box with settings pops up. Ive had nothing but issues with this update ?
I have a similar issue with my S7. Pretty sure I turned this off before the Nougat OS upgrade and it came back. There's one game specifically that I play that has small buttons on the right side of the screen, and about half the time the stupid sidebar comes up. I've looked around and don't see how to remove it.
There's a lot of old posts about disabling multi window but that doesn't seem to apply to the current devices.
Edit: So after wondering why I couldn't find barely info on this, I thought maybe it's not the S7's software but my launcher. Lo and behold, the dock was from Go Launcher. Going into Go Settings and then Dock I was able to again disable the side dock (It was marked as disabled, had to enable then disable). Hope that helps someone experiencing this!

Stuck at "Pixel is starting..." at boot

Background: I'm on a Pixel 3a running the January update (QQ1A.200105.002). Unlocked, stock, rooted with Magisk v20.2. Only using 3 Magisk modules (systemless hosts enabled for ad blocking, YouTube Vanced, and a custom font).
What happened: While cleaning my screen with a microfiber after work a few nights ago, I accidentally launched the SystemUI Tuner. I had created a gesture within Nova Launcher to access the SystemUI Tuner. It launched and toggled the "plugins" setting on & off. Afterward, I cursed myself for not disabling that gesture after I was done with the tuner, and I went to the homescreen. My wallpaper was gone and the background on my homescreen was black. Also, my 2 button gesture navigation was not present and my status bar was gone. I rebooted. This is when I found myself in a bootloop at the "Pixel is starting..." screen (a screen I had never seen prior to this).
Attempts to fix: Through a tip from another user I was able to get back into the phone by disabling my PIN screen lock security via adb. I did this by launching Settings via abd with:
Code:
adb shell am start -a android.settings.SETTINGS
Then I disabled all lockscreen security. I also was able to backup all data on internal storage. The phone boots (sort of) now, albeit without many SystemUI elements (e.g, no gesture navigation, status bar, notification panel, wallpaper, etc.). Still shows the "Pixel is starting" boot screen beforehand. It's unusable as a daily, but I really don't want to wipe and set up all over again if possible. Does anyone know where in /system the settings data for the System UI Tuner is stored? Another user suggested I look for: data/data/com.android.sytstemui.tuner. That directory does not exist, unfortunately. The user experienced this same series of events (i.e., toggled SystemUI Tuner "plugins" and ended up with no wallpaper at the "Pixel is starting" loop). This user tried sideloading the corresponding OTA image, flashing a full system image with "-w" removed to save data, safe mode. Nothing seemed to help. Before I spend hours setting up my phone after a clean install, does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Just wipe data. Doesn't take that long to set stuff back up.

That's all kind of relative to your set-up and how busy you are... I'm an RN with a little kid at home school. Time is priceless. Maybe I should post in the general Q&A and see if anyone knows where that directory might be hiding.

I mean... You knew the deal tinkering with your phone in the first place. It really doesn't take that long and I find myself pretty damn busy all the time. Good luck on your Easter egg hunt finding the directory.
Btw thanks for being front line as a RN during these wild times.

Oh I definitely understand the risk, and I'm more than willing to flash clean and set up again. I was really just posting a last ditch effort to see if I could avoid it. Clearly, a full wipe is in my not so distant future. Thanks for your kind words.
