So I had mine shattered. Screen broken, battery snapped. Is it possible to recover data if I buy some cheap battery? If possible I wouldn't want to buy a screen for a phone that will be thrown out. I didn't had ADB debugging turned on. Is it possible?
You could start the bootloader, then start via fastboot a twrp and transfer files via adb. But i don't know if you need to press any buttons in twrp to start adb.
Snapped the battery? Wtf? That's one hell of a impact or pocket crush
Very possible you damaged the mobo too; game over.
Don't waste too much money on this. If plugging in the charger doesn't power it up you most likely damaged to mobo.
In the future be prepared or this will happen again.
Always backup your data to a PC and keep another backup of that so you don't lose everything.
Buy a phone with an SD card slot and use the card as a data drive. Store all critical data on the card and backup the card to PC as above.
Data lose is like motorcycle crashes; not a question of if it will happen... only when.

Let me first say I'm writing this on my Captivate now, so it's not completely fried like you may think.
Earlier today I plugged in a flash drive to have it not work on my pc. I plugged it in a different pc and nothing so I assumed it just died after 4 years. I then plugged in my captivate so I could mount it real quick and get my homework on there to get to class. Now this time I got the errot message "usb not recognized." I installed drivers, restarted, and even reinstalled windows , and still the same problem.
I then tried on my bothers pc and it still said not recognized. At this point, I had my brother buy me a flash drive on his way home from work today. Took it out, plugged it in his pc, worked fine. Plugged it in mine, worked for 10 seconds, took it out and theus b connector was really warm. Reconnected to his pc to get the"not recognized" error again.
I took apart my old flash drive and it smells and had a burnt spot on a chip, my guess the usb controller.
Now anything plugged into my usb ports get fried and stop being recognized.
My phone still works but anytime I mount it via usb it can't recognize. No doubt the pc fried the usb controller chip in the phone.
would I be able too take this back to att? if they open it up they will most likely see a burnt chip on the board some where, equaling hardware failure, which they can't say that I caused. I also rooted my phone and deleted the att crapware. Any way to completely eeyore my phone to factory? Keep in mind I cant mount this phone any more so I'd have to download any files straight to the phone.
Thanks
I should also add that I had an external microsd card in my phone. After the while incident that I think fried my phone. The microsd no longer appears in my phone to mount, un mount, or see available space. But if I take the micro sd out and put it in a usb card reader it still works fine. It only can't be read if its in the phone, this leading me to believe something fried internally with regards to the usb controllers and what not

You could probably get away with a warranty replacement if you don't mind being dishonest.
#1) I doubt they would open it up and see the problem
#2) how can they prove that a hardware malfunction with the phone didn't cause it?
Im going in on friday to see what they can do. It wasn't like I was hacking it or modifying the hardware, just plugging it in got it fried. Even tho it was my pc that caused it, I guess they can't ever prove it was my pc or that the hardware didnt short out on its own.
So will odin restore me to stock and give my att apps back? Can I do it without access to a pc since I can never mount my phone any more?
you could probably post a bounty thread for a jf6 stiock rom in an update.zip.
then use myfiles to delete the updates & clockwork
JH7 I think is available as an update.zip in the development forum.
My girl has a RAZR HD which he dropped 2 days ago. Screen is shattered and stays black. we got a replacement from assurion and I have to send back this broken one. Only thing is she wants the pictures deleted from the phone before we send it back (far from PG rated stuff on there). I tried transferring by plugging into the PC but it says the folder is empty. Im unable to mount internal SD card. and she had no external SD card.
no im not familiar with ADB, but thats my last resort (learn it quick or have a friend pull from SD thru adb). Any way to mount (without looking at the screen) so i can do an easy transfer on the PC?
Thanks!
If all you want to do is delete them, why not flash the phone back to stock with RSD? Would erase everything including the pics

Good idea... put the phone in fastboot and flash the original sbf

Are you sure that will erase the internal SD? I did this a while back when there were some OTA issues and I don't remember my internal SD being wiped.
Also, screen was stuck, it had full battery and I was unable to turn off the phone to get into fast boot. Just waiting for the battery to die since she charged it recently.
Edit - yes I tried holding power and volume down and that didn't work to turn it off. (Maybe do to lockscreen?) So just going to wait for battery to die.

You could also do a "fastboot erase userdata" or "fastboot -w" to wipe everything.
Tried everything. Without a working screen to touch, the ability to turn on USB debugging is not possible. Can't get into recovery or fast boot with the power and volume rockers. Nothing.
Computer won't recognize device in adb.
With phone off, can I use rsd to flash sbf file? Having no luck and its about time to get dirty with it. Don't care about retrieving files.. just want the photos on the phone gone.
Few seconds in the microwave should zap all components of the phone, eh? Any safer or easier ways? I think if you even choose to submerge the phone in water, the internal SD can dry and eventually be readable.
Gotta ship it back soon.
Originally told insurance company the screen simply cracked. Now let's say something more drastic happened to the device... say it was theoretically run over by a truck.. would..
a) they try to charge you more than the basic $100
b) they even try to keep some of the internal parts (sd)

If it's only the screen that's busted you could try accessing fastboot blindly by getting the right number of Vol +– clicks... And since USB debugging is off it would be the only way I know of accessing it... About the microwave... I have no idea how it could impact the device but it's never a good idea to microwave a battery...

How to get pictures off of brokoen razr HD
Here is a great Youtube video for retrieving your Data(picture, video etc..) off of a broken Motorola RAZR HD. They use a micro HDMI cable and a USB mouse. Since I cant post a link...... Here is the title of the video "Motorola Razr HD Data Retrieval with Broken Screen"
I know this is a little older.. but I just discovered this:

maybe helpful!?
Hello,
Let me make this as short as possible. I have a 3 and a half year old Nexus 5. Just got off a plane 6 hours ago, and when i wanted to check my Facebook the display looked like it failed. I had red vertical lines running up and down the stream and the brightness was extremely low even though the setting in the phone had not changed. All the while, the phone was also impossible to maneuver. I rebooted it, the problem persisted for 5 minutes, and then after a quick lock-unlock, it fixed itself.
About 10 minutes later, when I again tried to unlock my phone to check if things were okay, the display went completely black. If I connect the phone to a charger, the display gets a little illuminated like it's going to start but nothing actually happens, I cannot see anything on the screen. The phone is responsive, if I plug it into a PC it starts charging and the PC recognizes it, but I can't see absolutely anything but black on the screen. Now with the questions:
1) What type of problem do you think this is. Wiring, display, or dead phone and no repair possible? As a best guess at least.
2) Before I take the phone into a service, I would like to know if there's any way I can download the pictures and data I had stored on it that was not yet backed up. As I said, I was just returning from a trip and I have some pictures on it, and while the PC recognizes the phone, it is put automatically in USB Charge mode and not USB Mass Storage Device mode. The phone is NOT rooted and USB Debugging was enabled before it crashed. The phone is up to date with the latest firmware.
Thank you in advance.
Does the touch function work? Is the bootloader unlocked?
If yes to both, you could load twrp, boot into twrp, mount the data partition, and copy off files.
It sounds like a failed screen to me. Was the phone ever dropped or exposed to moisture?

The screen is pitch black. If I touch the screen I can't feel anything or see anything, and I have no certainty I would be in the right menus. The only reaction I get is if I plug it in or reset it. The phone was never dropped, it is still in impeccable condition, no scratches or bumps. It wasn't exposed to moisture either, I wonder if the flight had anything to do with it, pressure and all.
So basically, apart from what you mentioned, there's no other way if my data is not backed up? I will be taking it in tomorrow, hoping for the best.
It's weird that this happened suddenly. The simplest solution may be to place the motherboard into another working phone.
You didn't answered about unlocked bootloader.

It's just the ribbon cable .You can change it by yourself it's too damn easy plus the cable is really cheap
It's either the flex cable or the LCD itself.

It was the LCD. I got a replacement LCD but now even with my brightness to the maximum, the phone still is darker than before. I also got a new battery in it. Is there an option to change the brightness that is hidden, or some kind of power saving option?
Thanks.
This Tuesday my OnePlus One fell into a lake. I let it dry for 2 days before powering it on, but there are a couple things wrong. The screen has messed up colors and what looks like artifacting (water stains I've heard them called?) so I've resigned myself to buying a new phone (hopefully tomorrow), but there are some files I had stored on my now old phone that I'd like to try to recover.
Even after leaving it to charge all night, it won't turn on unless plugged in. When plugged in, it will continuously show the Low Battery screen (with the Chinese text). If I hold volume-down while plugging it in, it will enter a bootloop (vibration, OnePlus logo, screen off, repeat) until unplugged, at which point it immediately stops and turns off. My PC doesn't register it at all when either of these two things happen. The screen doesn't turn on if I hold volume-up while plugging it in, but it will register on my PC as QDLoader 9008.
Before all this I was running the latest nightly of LineageOS and TWRP with an unlocked bootloader.
I've been very happy with my phone for the past 4 years but with the screen the way it is I'm not interested in fixing it, all I want is to access the data partition from my PC. I have Android Studio, adb, etc installed on my PC, is there any way to get adb to recognize my phone either in the low-battery screen or when recognized as QDLoader? Turning off immediately when the charging cable is removed makes me think its a broken battery which I could just replace, but I'd prefer not to spend any money if I don't have too seeing as I'm buying a new phone.
I've spent hours searching forums and Google for solutions, but all the solutions seem to involve wiping the drive to save the phone, while I'm not interested in saving the phone, just my data. The stickied debricking thread also seems to be targeted to hard-bricks, but considering the circumstances I don't think my phone is actually bricked at all, it just probably has a damaged battery.
Thanks!
Sorry to hear about your phone. Have you opened it up to check that all the contacts are dry? Water may have caused corrosion. Also, if you encounter water damage in future, it would be better to place your phone in a desiccant.
Hi, My s21+ was fine last night, but when i removed it from my wireless charger this morning the screen is completely black and un-responsive. The ringtone was sounding when someone called me earlier but following troubleshooting from samsung its no longer responsive at all - its no as if the phone isnt even turning on anymore.
I am eager to get the data from the handset, and am willing to take whatever steps neccessary to recover as much a I can. I have tried samsung smart switch PC but the phone is not recognised. I also looked (briefly) into wondershare mobiletrans, but that requires me to activate USB Debugging, which is impossible with a non responsive handset.
What are the best steps for me to take? I am not bothered if the handset works or not, i just want my SMS and Gallery saving if at all possible? There are some SMS's on there from my mum before she passed away that are quite sentimental to me.
All advice gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.
If you can't access the boot menu, there's nothing you can do without repairing the hardware failure first*. If it's the mobo only a data recovery specialist will be able to retrieve it.
If it's a battery failure, replacing the battery should put you in the pink again. Li's can fail completely with no warning but usually it's the degraded ones that fail ie less than 80% of original capacity. Any battery swelling is a failure.
This exactly one the reasons I always use a SD card as a data drive and back that up redundantly. With no data drive regular backup of critical data is mandatory. Phones with no expandable storage put you at a disadvantage in more ways than one. Regardless without redundant backup data lose becomes a question of not if it will happen only when it will happen.
*Try this to fix the black screen of death.
The phone is basically faulty right out of the factory: your screen has a bit that's either torn or disconnected from where it should be. I'd wager if you charged your phone suddenly it went dark its the black screen of death. In my case the screen was off but touch still worked. Left the phone alone for half a year, picked it up and suddenly it worked again. Brainless Samsung.
You should be able to recover your data probably easily. What happens when you connect the phone via USB to the PC? Or when you just charge it? Can you try charging it for a while, booting it up and then if you remember to, unlock it blindly (treat the screen as if it wasn't off)
