After the Jan 6th Android 11 update for my Pixel 3 XL (installed last night - stock ROM, not jailbroken), my battery suddenly dropped to zero and refused to charge. Unplugging it would make it shut off immediately. See battery history here , I plugged it in before the update, ran the update, then when I came back it was at 0. This was plugged in the whole time.

It would sit at 0% while saying "charging rapidly". If I unplugged it, it would die.
Let it charge all night, and it ended up at 5% somehow. Not good. Pulling it off the charger, however, the batter percentage started to INCREASE! It got up to about 25% before I tried plugging it back in... At which point it steadily decreased again.
So, clearly my batter calibration is completely corrupted. Factory reset did no good, and looks like you can't wipe the system cache an more which was my first thought.
Unsurprisingly Google support was no help and wouldn't even take responsibility for repair cost despite it being clearly linked to their software upgrade.
Any ideas? Or am I borked?
What is the battery voltage? This will tell you it's actual charge state.
Try discharging until it auto shutdowns then fully charge it; recalibrate the dumb Android. Maybe someone knows a better way to recalibrate this?
Hard resets rarely solve this kind of problem; you need to find the root cause and correct it otherwise even if the hard reset works it will most likely only pop up again down the road.
A hard reboot be the most I would try. Even needing to do that indicates a apk or potential hardware issue. A good running Android never needs this.
Accubattery claims 4.227V at 69% charge, but lord knows how accurate that is. (Edit: I'm now up to 72% charge and it's claiming the same... So, yeah. Oh, and that +3% is without charging.)
Root cause is almost certainly some variable overwritten or system file corrupted during the Android system update, since it happened immediately after the update.

I think 4.2 volts is near a 100% charge.
4.127 is about 75% on my 10+
Can't recall as I rarely go that high.

If the firmware doesn't have the same error... either that or go into the existing one and correct the mistake.
This is one of the reasons I'm not rooted. Too many loose ends... and very time consuming.
Maybe someone here has can help you in detail, good luck.
If jwoegerbauer is correct this only effects the battery % reported, not charging parameters or actual battery capacity. So it shouldn't harm the battery.
The charge level can be calculated by battery voltage which appears to accurate. I saw a chart for this but can't find it now.

My bad, sorry. You stated that.
It seems the update got corrupted or was badly coded.
I'm always afraid this will happen with auto updates as you have no control over the process or download.
You need to get it reflashed to the last working version for that phone. Or live with it as is.

Out of the box my phone was terrible on battery. It would go dead sitting idle after only 5-6hrs.
It was using over 150mA consistently just sitting idle, compared to 2-5mA now after doing a reset...something in the initial config...and maybe in the several lockups I experienced, must have done something bad.
Cycle the battery by letting it drain all the way down until you cant even turn it on.
Perform a full factory reset and let the phone charge fully before loading the phone up with 3rd party apps just to make sure you dont introduce anything new to the scenario that may drain battery life.
After the factory reset and battery cycling it works how I expect it to...glad I didnt get angry and return it right away.
*Factory Reset*
Settings-Privacy-Factory Data Reset
Few additional things I have found. since initial post...
1. I confirmed several times that qik video is a complete piece of junk and drains the battery, after factory reset dont re-configure it.
2. In settings-location & security settings DO NOT enable Use GPS satellites unless you really need to use specific GPS data for navigation...when indoors the GPS keeps looking for signal and drains the battery very quick.
3. Bluetooth seems to have an issue and is not power friendly at all...I have mine turn on at scheduled times only using an app.
Other Disclaimers:
As has been posted elsewhere the battery drivers are poor at best, you cannot trust the numbers being reported back. What I can confirm is that the factory reset gave me a useable phone for a lot longer than the 5-6 hrs I started with when the phone would physically turn off....regardless of misreporting battery status. So basically do the reset and keep the offending apps/processes off until a better version comes out, and dont trust the reported battery percentage.

My battery is fine also. I'm on hour 10 and just now got yellow indicator or just now at %30. This is without conditioning and without factory reset.

Nice info. I appreciate you taking the time to give a detailed report.
When first getting a phone, I always drain it and charge it up 100%. Doing a factory reset isn't a bad idea at all...
The battery drain issue doesnt seem to be an issue for many..obviously there is some sort of problem for others though...thats why I provided the documentation to show it happening.
...others also have not had the lockup/reboot issue, which I had too...maybe they are somehow related? Either way a factory reset did the trick...draining the battery to 0 was just for good measure just in case.

Going on 16Hrs now without a charge and still with 24% left.
This graph is now including a nearly 2 hr phone call, playing a video over HDMI to my TV and a bunch of texting.
Notice the steeper decline in battery during the phone call has a nearly identical slope to the pre factory reset portion of the graph...which just shows how much battery it was draining off before for no good reason.
Battery life has definitely been improving for me on the second and third charge.
Im still having drain issues... .i wonder if I need to leave it charging even after 100% like you did...

My G2X is working perfect without all the issues some are addressing. As for battery life, I did have some phones before where it was horrible.
My theory is: If a phone comes with a faulty battery, it may be spiking (power) and making the device go wacko ... hence, memory loss, random reboots etc...
Since my few experiences with faulty batteries, I've just always stuck with the rule: "Go with only factory OEM parts or except a higher failure rate with knock off made in china batteries..."

The factory reset was the main factor that fixed the issue for me.
Discharging the battery fully then recharging to 100% may help in that it will calibrate the electronics and get a truly 100 percent charge.

It's actually good to do so.
Drain the battery completely (best before you sleep) ...make sure the phone shuts off by itself from low battery. Usually I play a game or watch youtube to drain it...
Plug it in and let it charge while you sleep...
The phone will have charged* to 100% long before you awake. *The extra hours it's been plugged in til' you awake. (I've noticed that our phone charges super fast. Anyone else?)
When you wake, unplug the phone from the charger.
Then turn it off and turn it back on...refresh it..
You're good to go...
Note: It's always nice to restart your phone, after you've been using heavy apps, especially HD recording, taking pictures etc... With all my smart phones I've noticed that the phone can tweak out at times after heavy use.
Hope this helps...
Ok yeah. I factory reset and battery is a ton better! When I first saw you post that you fixed it with a factory reset I was skeptical but after trying it, yeah it works. Battery (so far!) has been much better after the reset. I wonder if it was the root that messed us up?
Jinx did you root?
Hi. I have a two-months-old Nexus 5 (stock ROM & kernel; rooted). Two days ago my battery suddenly started having some problems. First of all, it doesn't last more than 1-2 hours with normal phone usage. Then it often becomes hot, even when not charging. Last but not least, if I keep using my phone while charging, it charges incredibly slowly, or it doesn't charge at all (the charge remains stable). I'm using the stock charger. Any suggestion?

The Nexus 5 has been proven to last longer then an SGS4 which has a bigger battery, and the HTC one with the same size battery (under proper testing conditions) all while using a faster SoC. Do you troll the forums for those phones as well?
Maybe a Moto G or LG G2 would suit some people better for their increased battery life, but that doesn't mean you need to troll every thread on here with false accusations.
If you'd like any more proof on how the N5 battery lasts longer and is more efficient than competing phones of higher prices, just let me know.

Go into device settings > Location. Set Mode to Device only. Ensure that the Google location reporting in that same area is off.
Take another BBS log and post it.
I experience the same issues. Not charging when connected or even lose charge when connected. I am still figuring out what causes it. First of all try using the original cable and charger. Second, disconnect the charger when the screen is on, I read somewhere that can help as well.
Today I had the same issue again, but just before I started charging, the battery would lose 1% per 2 minutes and my phone became very warm.
If I find out more, I will let you know.

That is the problem. That particular wakelock belongs to Google Now. I hope you don't use it, because the solution is to turn it off (from within the program). You could try force stopping and/or wiping it's data. But the fact of the matter is that it's a bug in the app.
Google Now has been this way since it was released. The only conclusion I can draw is that Google doesn't care. It's never behaved properly. And that location reporting (that you've now disabled) is completely out of control, been that way for a year now. I actually greenify the Google apps now. I'm tired of putting up with the lazy programming. Keep, Now, Chrome, Drive, Maps, I greenify all of those. I still allow them to sync, but Greenify will kill them again after they are finished.

Hi,
I know this subject comes up in a variety of topics and it's really hard to sort the wood from the chaff.
So my "cool story bro" is that I had massively poor battery life following KitKat upgrade and have tried many of those battery saver/greenify apps with no resultant improvement.
I bit the bullet and did a factory reset after I had backed up everything with Kies.
End result is battery life is back to normal today.
Cheers,
Joe

Hello, I've had the Note 3 for just under a week and this battery problem is insanely frustrating. Android System uses more than 30% of the battery. Also was the phone new or 2nd hand? Could have a worn out battery in there.

Depends on what you did with the screen time. Movies would drain it a fair chunk I'd guess. If it's new then surely the Samsung warranty can be used if it does turn out to be the worst case scenario of a bad one (which is very rare so I'd expect we can get this sorted with the help of the community here).

It is normal if u are running android 4.4.2. Android system takes about 20 to 30% of total battery life. You will get similar result although u use the best custom Rom and kernel.

I have fixed the problem to a degree.. right now Android System takes 19% of battery and Android OS takes up 10%. What worked for me was disabling an app called "Universal Daemon(EUR)" and changed keep wifi on during sleep to never. The phone used to always hover at the 300 Mhz cpu frequency and never go into deep sleep, right now it does go into deep sleep. Tho I think I'm really unsatisifed with Touchwiz I guess I'll eventually root my phone and replace it with something that isn't as much of a resource hog.
Hi there.
This is not my issue but a friend. He got his OPO a month or so ago and recently came across this issue. His phone would say 100% for a very long time and not show any sign of drain even after usage for 6 hours. Then once it starts draining it would die at about 30%. He's not rooted or anything. If there's any way to solve this without a factory reset or root that would be preferable. He's on 38R.
EDIT: Just something more. He got a Moto 360 last Wednesday and noticed the battery percent was off last Thursday. Perhaps there's a connection there?

Is he letting it discharge completely and then charging it completely?
Transmitted via Bacon
Same here. Happened to me twice. At around 17% it shut off. Didn't bother me much since I am averaging 1 day and 5 hours on 5+ hours screen time. However this morning after a full charge at around 11 pm the night before, I woke up at 6 am and it was at 76% and 40% by the 12th hour which was unusual. I usually wake up and turn off the alarm and it's at 98% and around 70% by noon.
So I turned phone off and fully charged. Once charged, powered it back on and left it plugged for about a couple of minutes before unplugging and started using. So far, it's back to normal power consumption.

Don't think he's tried that yet. I guess I'll tell him.

If you read the OP he doesn't have root. He did look for that but it said root so he can't do it.

This is a post for a friend and he doesn't want to. Mine is already rooted with all the stuff I need.

There's another option (wipe battery stats in recovery) but I guess if your friend doesn't even want to root his phone, he most likely doesn't want to install a custom recovery either, am I right?
If that's the case, there's not really a solution for his problem. (unfortunately)
I really don't understand why he doesn't want to root it... But I know some people are very paranoid about it... for no obvious reason really. Just know that you can always unroot your phone after having fixed the issue.

He might not have a choice here. It isn't really that hard to setup the phone again.

He's probably going to try @minicoop7's suggestion first. But yeah if there isn't anything else he probably will. When he has time.

I've replaced batteries twice, I've tried bootlog in the boot menu calibrated my phone's battery. Still no improvement. What can I do.
My phone still shuts off at 50% battery power
More info? What device? Is it rooted? Custom rom?
It's a cheapie,Hisense u963 unrooted. No custom rom
You may want to open this in your devices Xda section if it has one, this is very device specific, but I can try to help. Can you look around battery settings and make sure tou did not chnage anything? Does it die at precisely 50 percent? Like exact?

Please have your phone's motherboard checked by a good technician. It is likely a motherboard issue which is drawing more power and the battery fails at a certain percentage otherwise it may also be the battery problem.

Ok It first died at 50% exactly.
After bootlog in fastboot it dies at 40%. The first time I did this it showed my true battery percentage 1%,after fastboot when phone goes on I charged it and trickled 30mins And it still died. At 40% . After this, I decided I'll calibrated it and it shot off at 48%. And thanks for the heads up will check.

Might be motherboard, but I don't think it can be the battery because I got a new battery. And it did this so I went back and they replaced the battery with a new one thinking it's the battery thats
faulty

Limiting battery power settings, or maybe some setting labeled to lengthen the life of the battery. I am unfamiliar with your device and even its brand.

It may be different for your device as per motherboard but its likely motherboard components fault.
Please have it repaired from a experienced and good mobile repair technician.

Only thing I've done is restrict some apps that are power intensive. But still kinda defeats the purpose
