Nexus 5 battery problems - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I have a two-months-old Nexus 5 (stock ROM & kernel; rooted). Two days ago my battery suddenly started having some problems. First of all, it doesn't last more than 1-2 hours with normal phone usage. Then it often becomes hot, even when not charging. Last but not least, if I keep using my phone while charging, it charges incredibly slowly, or it doesn't charge at all (the charge remains stable). I'm using the stock charger. Any suggestion?

Looks like wakelocking. You'll need root and BetterBatteryStats to fix it (without guessing).

The Nexus 5 has been proven to last longer then an SGS4 which has a bigger battery, and the HTC one with the same size battery (under proper testing conditions) all while using a faster SoC. Do you troll the forums for those phones as well?
Maybe a Moto G or LG G2 would suit some people better for their increased battery life, but that doesn't mean you need to troll every thread on here with false accusations.
If you'd like any more proof on how the N5 battery lasts longer and is more efficient than competing phones of higher prices, just let me know.

I did what you said; I have attached some screenshots. I'm not an expert about this, but it seems like you were right. What shall I do?

The most important stat to look at is partial wakelocks - it lets you see which app or apps are waking.

Go into device settings > Location. Set Mode to Device only. Ensure that the Google location reporting in that same area is off.
Take another BBS log and post it.

I experience the same issues. Not charging when connected or even lose charge when connected. I am still figuring out what causes it. First of all try using the original cable and charger. Second, disconnect the charger when the screen is on, I read somewhere that can help as well.
Today I had the same issue again, but just before I started charging, the battery would lose 1% per 2 minutes and my phone became very warm.
If I find out more, I will let you know.

That is the problem. That particular wakelock belongs to Google Now. I hope you don't use it, because the solution is to turn it off (from within the program). You could try force stopping and/or wiping it's data. But the fact of the matter is that it's a bug in the app.
Google Now has been this way since it was released. The only conclusion I can draw is that Google doesn't care. It's never behaved properly. And that location reporting (that you've now disabled) is completely out of control, been that way for a year now. I actually greenify the Google apps now. I'm tired of putting up with the lazy programming. Keep, Now, Chrome, Drive, Maps, I greenify all of those. I still allow them to sync, but Greenify will kill them again after they are finished.

I can confirm that I have no battery problems anymore (today after 6 hours of average usage it was still at 80%!!). Thank you all for your help!

Good to hear. If anyone else see's Android OS or Search taking up 50% or more of your battery that can be mitigated.

Take out your Battery, put it on a flat surface say a table. Try to Spin it....if it spins over 2 rounds then you need to buy a new battery.

Battery now dying...

So I'm like wtf all of a sudden my battery is like at 40% by noon, and I recharge and it gets to the same within a couple of hours }
I don't get it not even a year yet
BTW I'm stock froyo/ rooted
Bad battery ? Any one else experience this? I have juice defender set CPU
Battery stats say main cause is "cell standby" any tricks to fix this?
No I'm not going to gb
meh...
Well, in the end, that's the best that froyo can do for the G2X...
I had Froyo and i pulled off 6hrs, when i got GB i was able to pull off 8, so yea, juice defender really wouldn't give you that much more battery life, the best shot is to upgrade the ROM.
i would consider updating it :/ i've never had froyo but since i've been using gb i get 15+ hours out of my phone and that's with heavy texting, internet browsing, some netflix watching and a little gaming. but cell standby seems to be my biggest problem too i wish i could fix that

Running froyo I was getting at least 14-16 hours.
Usually bad battery life can be accredited to less-than-optimal user settings, heavy device usage, or there's a rogue app that's sucking your battery down.

and as you can see i still have about half a battery left. the only precaution i really take is that my brightness is almost down to zero. and on my old phone it used to show in the battery settings if i used a certain application such as internet or ebuddy. i have no idea why it won't show those on this device so you can't see my heavy internet usage, gaming and some netflix watching.
and just for reference i'm running complete stock no root or anything. i'm now on one day and two hours worth of battery with 30% still left

Hey OP, can you post a list of your apps? Use listables. I want to compare it against mine. If there are any similar apps then I'm going to disable/uninstall mine and check battery life and report back.
Have you tried booting into recovery and erasing battery data? That greatly improved battery life on my Nexus S after it had undergone multiple ROM flashes.

The ROM you're using is a huge matter. With CM7, i couldn't go a day without charging. Now, with MIUI, I'm pretty sure I can get 3 days, with normal brightness, and my normal use, which is email and texting.

Is 3G turned on? Cause I can barely get like 14 hours moderate usage with dim brightness :S
I noticed that with cell radio on I used 10% in 57 minutes and with it off I used 1% in 1.5 hours...

I found that if I turn data off sync off the battery lasts over twice as long. I don't need it consistently on, so I turn it on when I'm not busy. Works for me

Battery Life of P6200

Hi all, i'm new to the P6200, i got it for few days and everything running fine. However my battery use increased greatly today but i didnt install any new apps.
its about 8 hrs from 100%-60% while my usage didnt increase at all.
BTW how long does your battery last ?
Im planning to root my P6200 and use Titanium backup to freeze some apps. However i gonna need to know how can i unroot first, except the flashing method. Since im in Hong Kong and doesnt have the HK verson firmware yet. I afraid it would void my warranty incase my tab got any problem.
I used the root method on this thread --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367249
Rooting will void your warranty ,
doing a factory reset will unroot the tab, as well as installing an update. All it does is remove su from system/bin.
thanks ! then i will root it asap !! yay !

Strangely enough, I updated to the current patch via WiFi, and did not have to re-root.
I don't know why but my battery jumped from 100% to 89% within 2 hrs of standby. What could've possibly caused this? Facebook app?

You might need to manually remove su from system/bin to fully unroot, someone posted a procedure here somewhere.

The new Facebook App drains the battery on my GSII at a rediculous rate, on the Tab it didn't do it too much but I never really opened it. I suspect there is a battery leak that starts once the program is open. On my GSII I noticed a drain maxing out at 20% an hour until I uninstalled Facebook.

I know battery performance is always relative to the application we use and runs but lately I've tried the GT7+ battery performance with nonstop(*almost) gaming n browsing, I only get approximately 6 hours from 100-2% with screen brightness set on 30% and browsing via 3G

Is the One X supposed to charge like this?

After switching back to ViperXL and ElementalX from AOSP ROMs, I noticed that the phone seemed to be charging kind of slow, so I went and actually jotted down some data on the charge rate.
Time, battery percentage, delta percentage, delta time (interval), percentage [points] per minute, delta ppm, fast charge, and power source. The orange dot denotes when I turned fastcharge on.

Obviously, this isn't supposed to be definitive or even scientific, but I'm curious as to if other people's phones charge like this. The whole charging process took about 4 hours from ~15% to 100% (not completely documented).
The phone didn't seem to get any warmer than usual with FC on while ambient temps were ~60F/16C.

My power source was AC from the wall. It doesn't seem like Fast Charge from the wall makes any difference (it shouldn't have).
A 90min charge is much better than 4 hours... I feel like AOSP ROMs charge much quicker than Sense ROMs, but I don't have the data to back it up.

I've kinda noted these issues too. The last 10% of charging takes forever on my phone, but going from 100% to 90% takes no time at all.
On the other hand, going from 60% to 0% takes forever, but charging 0% to 60% takes about a half hour.

Maps is Greenify'd and Facebook isn't too high up on the list of App usage. If it was an app draining battery, wouldn't I see sub-par battery performance when off the charger? I got 14 hours total with 3 hours of screen-on time yesterday.

Not exatcly the correct spot but, will it do any harm to charge the One X with an iPAD charger?
I remember reading two things,
1. It might harm the battery in long term use.
2. It will not charge fast hence the One X's battery is capable of pulling 1A maximum. Not an electronics expert so apologies if this is a dumb thing to ask.

I don't think the issue is that they are consistent battery drainers. The issue is that they occasionally go "rogue" and kill your battery in short order. I've had maps kill like 30 percent charge in a matter of an hour. As soon as you kill the instance, the app restarts and goes right back to its minimal usage. No idea what causes it. The entire thing is just random. I did report it to Google, though, so hopefully it will get resolved.

Doubt it'll cause damage. If the One X only pulls 1A, then it'll only pull 1A. It's not like you're forcing it to pull more.

This seems normal behavior for charging of Li ion batteries, based on the first graph here: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
Although the OP's issue sounds different, as the behavior seems to have started after flashing the new ROM.

Worst battery life with 30O ?

Horrible drain for me this night !
I apply exactly the same setting, after my fresh flash. (Disabled GooglePlay Services, Disabled lot of services in Privacy...)
So, clean install, remove uselesswares inside rom, i'm losing 1,3% per hour in idle !
25R was 0.3% 0.4% per hour.
And to compare, i also flashed my LG G3 yesterday, no optimisations, untouched rom, only lost 1% in 10 hours !
Definitly moving back to 25R !
OPO is probably the worst device in battery life i have.

Post battery usage screens. Also, do you use greenify? Custom kernel? Dalvik/ART?
If it's draining that much there must be something running constantly in the background while you're idling and hence affecting the battery life.
Screen was off !
Overnight drain.
There can still run things on your phone, while your screen was off.

Drain until 1%, then charge.
Sent from my One using Tapatalk
Well I've been loosing about 1% per hour during the night since I got the phone. During the night I have everything turned off since I only need the alarm.

I'm having the exact same issue as with many others. Definitely a faster drain. Don't seem to be any wakelocks or other things keeping it from zapping the juice. However, it just keeps going down fast...

No time to lose, already reverted back to 25R.
Really disappointed of Cyanogen Software.
CM11 is running great on LG G2, Note 3, so why it's so bad on its dedicated device ?!?

I'm not alone ! :good:
We'll probably get more customers feedbacks in the next days, but for me, 30O is a fail.
I just wanted to say that 30O update didn't make battery worse since it was already loosing that much juice already.

I did a similar test to you. Last night, I charged my Nexus 5 and OnePlus One up to 100%. I took them both off the charger at the same time, put them both on Airplane mode and went to sleep.
Woke up this morning, N5 on 99% and OPO on 94%, couldn't see anything notably different looking at the battery stats either... Not sure why it is draining so fast!

Yes, but it only takes you 2 minutes to enter your name, nickname, email and password when registering.
To be honest, the problem is not only with the latest software.
I'm using gummy, which has a CM based kernel and even after disabling everything possible (keep awakes in app ops, all syncs, google play service stuf, app feedback and notification data) and with zero apps in foreground and in airplane mode, I'm still loosing ~1% per hour over night.
The device is in deep sleep and wakelock detector doesn't see any wakelocks besides a couple of minutes of "AudioIn" from google search.
It might be even worse on the latest software, but there is a general problem here.
Either it's a driver/kernel problem, or they're just selling really cheap batteries that get worse over time (unlikely, I hope)... Or it could be the double tap to wake/sleep function(going to test that next night).
On the nexus 5 this option was available when using a custom kernel, but the devs added an option that one could use it, but only when turning the screen off by using the double tap to sleep option.
When turning it off with the hardware button, dt2w would be deactivated.
The reason for that was that the device would always have to wait for and register the dt2w, which could drain the battery.
Anyway, this is the last thing I'm going to try and that I am able to test now, if that's not the problem, it has be one of the other two options.
We know one thing for sure - the idle drain was not there before the update, so it means the update introduced it.
If it's because of the proximity sensor for gestures/doubletap/etc. or some other bug - it's unclear at this point in time.
Most likely it's not related to the radio or mobile phone functions, as people report the same increased drain in airplane mode.
25R is fine for me. 4.4.2.
Nightlies are worst concerning battery drain.
30O has same drain as Nightlies, now 4.4.4
So, what is 30O ? Only M9 or Nightly rebadged ?

That's bad news, I was hoping one of the ways to get back to normal battery drain was installing M9... but seems if OP/Cyanogen don't react to this in a few days, the only solution will be reverting to 25R. It's a good thing I made a TWRP backup
Full 25R TWRP flashable is here !

Here's the deal with Z5's low battery life issues (solved, for me at least)

I've been struggling to keep my Z5 off the charger for at least a day ever since I got it (3 weeks), and although I loved everything about the phone compared to the Z3, the battery life was a huge let down. Even after flashing the whole OS I got no change.
My Z5 came with the quick charge charger (check yours, it's model nb is UCH20). After using it for a few days, doing partial and complete battery drain cicles with NO improvement on the crappy battery life I was experiencing, I came accorss an older normal, non fast charging charger (the one that came with the z1,2,3). So just for fun, i decided to use that one.
The results were surprisingly more than positive. After a complete drain, and a complete charge witht the older charger (which might have come with some "less fortunate" Z5 variants) the battery lasted almost twice as much. I ended up with 30% at 12 o'clock at night after heavy use (8 hours of bt listening till my sbh80 headset died) plus a decent ammount of browsing and some gaimg, which considering it was at 100% at 8 am when i pulled it out, was better than my old Z3.
So there you go. I saw on forums that some people are having problems with a ****ty battery life, otheres don't. From my experience, and the black and white difference i got in battery life from those 2 chargers, I definitely suspect it's the quick charger's fault.
So now, whoever has problems with their battery life, just get an older standard sony charger. Kinda sucks, i know, but apparently sony's quick charger is ****). But at least you'll get awesome battery life (hopefully).
So Sony Mobile, what's up with the ****ty quick charger? Why am I getting horrible battery life when using it?
FYI: The UCH20 is not a Quick Charge 2.0 device - it's just a regular 1.5A charger. The UCH10 is the QC one.
I'm taking your "battery lasted almost twice as much" statement with a pinch of salt...
So you're basically calling me a liar without trying it? What a constructive comment and, not to mention, member of XDA developers. As for the UCH20, I assumed it's quick charge because it seems to make a full charge on my Z5 in 2 hours as opposed to 2:40h with the older charger.
Calm yourself down, fella! I'm suggesting that as your post contains a known error (UCH20 is not QC) that perhaps that lack of attention to detail casts doubt on the accuracy of your battery life claim.
No one's calling you a liar. I just find it hard to believe that a different charger has such an impact on how long the Z5 lasts on it once it's charged...
FYI: Your older charger is probably a 1.0A one or similar if it takes 2:40 to charge fully. The UCH20 is 1.5A and QC chargers go up to 2A.
I think it may be more likely that you've had some random wakelock and just haven't had it triggered after charging with this other charger. I've noticed a random wakelock and so far have no clue what it is.

This seems right to me. I'm not sure if it's all Android devices, but I've noticed that this phone stays awake all the time.
I don't have Facebook, Facebook messenger, Instagram, or Whatsapp installed (known bad apps), but often I still have massive wakelocks.
I have found a temporary workaround:
1) Clear cache on Android Wear
2) Force stop Google Play Store; clear cache
3) Clear cache on Google Play Services
4) Reboot
Really not happy with this. I'm guessing it's Google's fault. Someone really needs to take care of this bug.

I've tried that but not for a while, how long does that fix work for you? I've just been checking my battery graph every so often and rebooting when I notice a wakelock.

Are you sure? I'm not even on Facebook and I've never installed the app but it was already on the phone out of the box. And the phone was bought carrier free so Facebook must be paying Sony to put it on the ROM (Customised DE). So I uninstalled the Facebook app the second I spotted it - never even ran it. Then I spot these two com.facebook.blah apps I had to disable but there's no corresponding app left to uninstall:

Not usually that long. All day today at least.
As far as Facebook goes, I just disabled the two com.facebook... Thanks for pointing that out. Not sure what those do.
