Right now I exclusively use Telegram for participating in online communities that interest me, where I do not know any of the other users in real life. When I get notifications that someone I know in real life, whose phone number is in my contacts, has joined Telegram it has bothered me that this blurs the line between my real life identity and the online pseudonym I use - as I expect that they see my username and it may be quite confusing to them who I am.
I have also been reading how Telegram is increasing in popularity which is great but if there is widespread general adoption separating my real life contacts from my online communities at a late point will be even more difficult.
It seems the best option would be a second account but that every Telegram account requires a unique phone number - is there some way around this, or is there some way I can set up a second account without having to set reactivate an old SIM by topping it up, and continuing to top it up every few months to keep the provider from - required at least by Vodafone Ireland? Perhaps there is some kind of online SMS phone number I could use free or for a once off fee that would allow me to see receive email or web based SMS?

Just an idea for all of those with a "fav 5" or "friends and fmaily" type of feature on your plan.
I would recommend adding Google 411 (free directory assistance) to one of your number slots. the number is: 1-800-466-4411
I know that you cannot use this to call friends, but even if you know a business number, call it through Google's 411 service and since they connect the calls it will not use any of your minutes. You can also say "text me" before it connects you and it will send you a txt message with the name, number and address.
Anyway, just an idea. I added it to our new plan we just switched to and now calling Google 411 is considered an in-network calling so it doesn't use any minutes

Sorry, USA.
I am on Verizon, and I added Google 411 to my list. They go into a "pending" phase for 24 hours before they become active, but it is active now! Can call anyone free pretty much via Google. Will be awesome, hehe.

Actually, there was an article published a few years ago in 2600: The Hacker Quarterly (Autumn 2007, Issue 24:3, page 32) that explained how easy it was to add businesses to Google 411, and then how to add your friends and family as businesses in order to call them for free. And I'm not sure you need to even put it into your Fave-Five or other like plans, since it's an 800 number, so it should be toll free.
You just add your friends' and family members' numbers as really obscure named businesses with obscure purposes, like archery if there are no archery businesses around you (so that way you are guaranteed to have your "business" show up.
According to the article, the only thing you need to do to register a business is to have a Gmail/Google account, to be able to answer the phone whose number you gave Google 411, and a special PIN number they gave you when you completed part 1 of the registration process (signing up the number and inputting business information).
Then, you wait a while for Google to update their database, and then just call 1-800-GOOG-411 and look up the name of the imaginary obscure business you input, and make free calls to your friends/family. Although it's kind of impractical, for lengthy long distance calls, I guess it could seriously come in handy.
Although I don't know of any reason this wouldn't work now, this article is a few years old, so Google may have changed the process entirely by now, SO THIS ARTICLE MAY NOT BE ACCURATE ANYMORE! And if I missed anything in this post, please feel free to correct me.
@Mods, I don't think this post violates any forum rules, but if it does, PM me and I will be happy to take it down. Thanks,
Dave
OK, it's about time that I reviewed my email hosting options, I am currently paying $10 a month to exchangemymail.com for exchange 2k3 hosting (200MB mailbox). The main reason I went with that company was at the time they were the only ones I could find that offered postini filtered email accounts for one user only (I use it for my personal phone not just buisiness).
Top notch spam filtering is my #1 priority as I have had evilc.com and the [email protected] email address for nigh on 20 years now so I get a *lot* of spam.
However, since I originally took out the account, google bought postini, and now it seems that you can pay google $6 a year for postini filtering and bolt it onto any email account (You need a domain, which I have).
I am not unhappy with exchangemymail.com's service at all, but I think I can maybe get a better deal now.
So... looking for input on the subject.
Here are some points worth noting:
I currently use windows mobile, but I am maybe getting an android phone too soon, so a system that works well on both would be nice.
I use the same account on my desktop as my phone and I will not change this - it has to be as good a desktop solution as it is a phone solution.
Unification of email / contacts / tasks etc and OTA synching of these is vital. With my current system, I can enter a contact into outlook, pick up my (untethered) phone and the contact will be in there within seconds. I want to keep this.
I want the push email to be as real-time as possible. None of this every 5 or 10 minutes rubbish. I hold conversations via email, so it needs to be fast.
I am not hugely happy with the desktop exchange solution, it takes ~2-3 mins to load up outlook, and I have to enter my password too. However, I am not a huge fan of web interfaces for email / contacts etc.
I suppose it doesnt have to be postini spam filtering, but it needs to be really, really good.
Not looking for super cheap / free solutions from tiny outfits. I want to sleep sound at night knowing that my data is safe. (Yes I know about the google / sidekick fiasco but that isn't the norm for google)
I am in the UK, so hosting in places where the exchange rate is favourable makes sense
Ok, I have dug and dug on this issue so I am turning to my fellow members to help me out a bit. On my wife's iPhone I have installed the sms and phone integration addons from here: GV Extensions for iPhone | SMS. This allows you to use the stock messaging application to send/receive texts. No special stuff is needed and it just plain works. What I would like to know is how can I accomplish this on my android phones? I currently have an Optimus V and just obtained a Triumph that I will be activating in the next day or two.
I strictly use Google Voice for my phonecalls/sms as I did not want to lose my cell number when I moved from AT&T to Virgin Mobile earlier in this year. So I have the GV app on the phone and I have it set to dial out so my # shows properly to the receiving party and I use it to send/receive texts. Well recently I have been trying out various apps like Iris and they only use the stock messaging app no matter what I have set in preferences. Plus lets be honest, the GV app leaves alot to be desired in terms of looks and it is laggy most of the time.
I know I can forward texts to email but that is just clunky at best. I can also send the sms's to my phones # via the GV interface but what about when I want to text someone that I don't normally text? I don't want to have to go through my entire phonebook and text people and hope they reply just to get the "gv textback #" that I then save to my contacts and set as sms default.
What I would LOVE to be able to do is just open the messages application, choose compose, select my contacts cell #, write a message, and when it sends it not hit my SMS at all but rather be sent directly through my data to GV and then to the recipient.
Is this possible? It seems odd that an iOS device can do this but an android can't. I know it should be but I know it may just be a matter of the right developer taking the time to do it. I would gladly pay the same price as I did for my wife's iPhone apps ($3/each) for this functionality on my androids. Anyone have any insight into this?

Sorry about that. I thought I put it in the most relevant location. Thanks for moving it though. Now just to see if anyone has an idea on how to do it!
Sorry - I don't have a solution for you, but I second this. I have been trying to find a way to do this for a long time.
BUMP
I really do love Google Voice and can not figure out why they offer a better solution for iOS than Android. Major beef with G over this, especially since they offer partnered with Sprint 6 months ago to offer more integration and have not offered the same option to other vendors or the open source community.

Well, TextMarkter.co.uk provides solution for any Google contact to SMS, you may refer to textmarketer.co.uk/software-partners/ as well.
Hi all:
I am a developer for an app that forwards SMS (and other things) to an email address. Obviously it would be elegant to be able to reply to your SMS right from your email account, while the other side still sees your SMS in the normal way, and the app does exactly this.
But to get the reply back to the phone via email, we need the user to enter the email-to-SMS address as part of setup. You know, like [email protected] or @vtext.com. The app has a database for some countries and carriers but obviously its a drop in the bucket.
We are finding out that maybe not a lot of people know of such a feature on their phones, hence this poll! It'll help us try some other ideas, or implement this one differently.
Thanks!
PVS
PhoneLeash - free on Android Market
Rogers (in Canada) has this service.. but they charge us for it. So not many people actually have it.
Thanks to everyone who responded. As a result of the poll results, PhoneLeash now supports forwarding SMS (and missed calls, and location, and battery status) to another phone number via SMS. And replying back to these forwarded SMS' does not require an email-to-SMS feature. If you forward to a Google Voice number (or other PC-based SMS-capable services such as HeyWire, Pinger), you can use a PC, and enjoy a very nice feature set (see this review).
Thanks for the useful development for mobile users and internet users as well.
However, I'm already using this service with the help of third party i.e. TextMarketer.co.uk
Play (Poland) already has such a service. It is free for everyone. Polish speakers can check it here: http://www.blogplay.pl/2010/11/kopia-sms-na-email-beta/
I've been using Google contacts and email for some time now and am surprised that there is not a more robust contact management solution from a sales perspective. Most people I think, have a need today to make good searchable notes about the people the they meet, and add reminders to follow-up with certain ones or groups of them.
I was reminded again today how horrible this contact management situation still is today, when I added a contact that I met at a Chumber of Commerce lunch. I remembered "Mark J" which is meaningless to me so I entitled the contact with a two letter code identifying the restaurant where we met, as much of the name I could remember, and relavant details. The title was Db Mark J Owner Limo Svc.
Now what I like about that, is that no longer are you forced to split the name into separate fields because that wouldn't fit.
What I don't like is that when I did a search immediately after adding the name for the word "limo' which is, for crying out loud, in the title of the contact, it did not come up! It wasn't even in the notes or some other field which should also be searchable?
How do others handle this? I know about SalesForce.com and others but monthly commitments are a small business owner's worst nightmare. Is there any way to improve this?
I'd like to at least be able to find a Google contact with a search.
I'd also like to add reminders to follow up on various groups or search matches.
I'd also like to be able let an email campaign interact with them without creating separate lists.
Assistance is greatly appreciated in helping me to get more out of contact management.
