Google helping window when copying text on tablet - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
when I copied text on another android-tablet I once had, in the lower part of the screen there was a google-window opening up, the copied text was instantly pasted into there.
Also, after clicking on it, there were the search-result listed, but at the top of the screen also a box with google-translator results.
Please help, tell me how this whatever it is (chrome-extension etc.), is called and how I can retrieve or instal or even manage it in settings.
Many thanks for any hint or help in advance.

Remving obselete Today program entries

I have an obselete today program entry that is left over from an old program, does anyone know how to remove it. I cannot remove it from the list of programs displayed in Today by taking out the tick from the menu list as when I try to remove the tick I get a message saying "start menu - unable to move that item"
Any ideas please?

Sorry, I'm a newbie to mobiles, how do I get at the plugins, the entry doesn't show in the list of installed programs
Thanks
This is usually what I do as a newbie. Re-install the OLD application related to the Today Plug-In that was left lingering in your Today Screen. This time you can UNINSTALL it correctly by UNTICKING the box for the plug-in found at Start>Settings>Today>Plug-in. After doing this, you can now safely UNINSTALL the application and hopefully the plug-in won't be left behind.
this was the part you should read
"Otherwise get a registry editor and delete the relevant key under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\[item name]"
you get to it by using a registry editor like total commander
I don't appear to have a 'plugins' tab in Start>Settings>Today>. So I guess I am going to have to go down the registry editing route, but this worries me somewhat in case it goes pear shaped
'plugins' should be 'items' not 'plugins''s
Rudegar
Thanks for the correction, the entry concerned does not show in the items list
then i have absolutely no idea what you are asking
in today->items
all today items shown on the today screen should be located
unless it's not a true today item and is a program which is started from
\windows\startup
and if you mean icons in programs
or shortcuts to programs in programs in a launcher you can
1 remove the icon from programs in windows\startmenu\programs\
and if it's in a launcher today item you have to use the functionality of that launcher
Rudegar
When I tap Start the icon appears in the list of things like calendar and call register, but it is an empty icon that just displays an empty box and the name 'copilot'. If I then go to start, settings, menus I can again see it in the list of programs in the start menu, but it wont let me remove the tick to take it out of the list.I just get a message saying 'unable to move that item'

You need to connect your phone through activesync. Then go into windows > Programs and delete the program icon in there. Once you do that, it will not show up on the start drop down list.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I was unable to get at it except by file explorer/windows/startmenu, but deleting the file in there did the trick. The problem was that the icon remained even after the program was uninstalled. Problem now solved... thanks to all your help

Actually, maevro has the right idea, but he gave you the wrong direction to follow. I hope you don't mind if I correct it a little bit.
OK, I assume you already UNINSTALLED this said application a long time ago, right? What happened was an icon was left at these 2 locations:
1) Windows>Start Menu>Programs>(or it could have created its own folder)
2) Windows>Start Menu
Let me explain it as simply as I can. All icons you see in Windows>Start Menu will appear avery time you PRESS/TAP the START windows icon/button. It has a maximum limit (on my device) of 7 applications to show. You can control what is in there using START>SETTINGS>MENU application, BUT since there is also another icon present probably in Windows>Start Menu>Programs it won't let you move it out of that folder.
SO THE SOLUTION:
Delete the said icons on the folowing locations:
1) Windows>Start Menu>Programs>(or it could have created its own folder)
2) Windows>Start Menu
Don't worry if you can't find the icon in list number 1. You can manually delete it using a powerful file manager like RESCO EXPLORER (not free) or TOTAL COMMANDER (free) or use what maevro suggested and attach it via USB and use active sync.
I hope this helps.

Can't save photo - folder renaming problem

Hello,
I am having the following problem: I can't save photos I take - neither on the SD card, nor on the device. Since that part of my device is in Japanese, I attach pictures of the two messages, hopefully someone can tell what exactly they mean.
http://cheeseus.org/images/camera_issue.jpg
---- PS. That sorted. First photo says "cannot save picture", second says "please insert miniSD card"... well, I have inserted one.
Now, I am guessing where the problem originates. In order to switch the device into English, I made some changes in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/MUI/CurLang 1041→1033
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/MUI/SysLang 1041→1033
and also renamed a few folders, including "My Documents\マイピクチャ → My Pictures", and also the "miniSDカード" to "miniSD". The system is very probably looking for the folders with their original Japanese names.
My question is, can I change the name of the save location for the camera, somewhere in the registry I presume?
I have found this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=237846
and tried to follow instructions there, but to no avail. Set
"DefaultDir"="\Storage Card"
I do not have item
"DiskName"="DSK3:"
Perhaps I should create one?
After I take a picture and get the warning message and press OK, the screen goes white and the only thing I can do is close the camera.
Help, please?

Blank Images in Pictures App - Any ideas?

Hi guys, I picked up my Surface RT earlier this week and so far very pleased with the tablet and its general performance. I had imported some pictures from my microSD. I deleted the pictures yet they are still appearing as blank black boxes in the app!
When i try to delete them it says it cannot deleted them and to please make sure they are not being used by another application or that I have permission to delete them. After searching for ages i found out that I may have to reindex the libraries, but i do know what this means or how to do this. Would really appreciate any advice or feedback on how to clear these blank images from the pictures app.
Thanks in Advance

Stop Gallery from Showing ALL Folders

Anyone know of a simple way to stop the gallery from Showing all folders? I've got stuff on my SD card that I don't feel is appropriate for my young children to see (primarily "R" rated movies) & my 4 y/o daughter loves to "look @ pictures, daddy" when we're in the car.
Any way to keep the folder containing these files from being shown in the gallery? Can/should I uninstall the gallery app & use a substitute?
I heard a while back that you can I insert a text file like ".nomedia" but have no idea how to do that.
Any suggestions / ideas (that don't include "remove that crap" or "control your kids!" LÖL) are appreciated. If the suggestion is a .nomedia file or some such, detailed instructions would also be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

An easy way to add the .nomedia file is to download the free version of Super Manager from the Play Store. (or paid if you decide you like it) Once you have it open it and go to the file manager. Open up the folder you want hidden so that you can see its contents. At the bottom of the app there is a bar with different buttons. One of them looks like the Windows Media Player icon with a check mark and an X on it and says media below it. Tapping that icon will add/remove a .nomedia file in the open folder.
May not be the most simplistic way but I always had trouble finding something that would let me create just a standard file type I could turn in to the .nomedia file. All most file manager apps let you create is a folder which wont work.
Thanks for the advice! Embarrassing as this is, I "cheated" & looked for an answer on Google @ the same time I posted the question.
Turns out the easiest way for me was to change the name of the folder from "Interesting" to ".Interesting"
Folder disappeared and is no longer assessable through the gallery.
Sorry for the wasted time but I appreciate the answer. Next time, I'll be a little less lazy & a little more aware of the power of the Goog....

Thanks!

I use an app called Vaulty (free version) or Stocks (paid version of Vaulty). It works well for hiding media from prying eyes. Entering anything other than the correct password on the program's opening page just performs a stock market lookup, so as far as anyone else is concerned, it's just another stock market app.

Doesn't work for me. App themes work, but nothing shows in the gif window no matter what I search. Share button doesn't do anything either, but that could just be because there is nothing to share. Gif Overlay is set to be allowed to draw over other apps in my device btw.

That should only happen if there is an error contacting the server for the search or parsing the search response data.
Could you check adb logcat messages? You should see some error there.

Got it to work! For some reason it didn't work until I disabled my VPN. Then after a successful gif search I rebooted the device and it seemed to be working fine with my VPN. It works great now for most apps, but for the few that it doesn't, is it possible to maybe allow for the Gif to be somehow copied right into whatever text field you're in or is sharing to the app the only way? Great app though btw. Thank you!

That would be cool. I guess there's no way to really copy the image itself to clipboard is there? Only text? I've been looking for an app that does that myself for a long time.

As far as I know, you can copy the image to the clipboard. The problem is that the app where you are pasting will not understand you are pasting an image unless they have implemented that.

Generally, when you touch and hold an image in an app you can share or download it and share it to wherever, but i don't think I've ever seen a "Copy to Clipboard" option except when copying text. I see what you mean about pasting the image though and maybe a gif would be even more complicated to do that with.
I wonder if it would be better if you set it the touch and hold the image function to download the gif instead. Then you could add it anywhere.
Changelog 1.4

Thank you! I tried it out and for some reason I'm still having connection problems. Even turning off my VPN doesn't seem to make it search. I noticed that sometimes when turning off my WiFi connection it will search right away, but not all the time. I wonder if I'm the only one having this issue. When it does search it does appear to download, but even when searching my entire sdcard for "gif" or ".gif" or even the name that it says it saved as afterwards I can't seem to find where it saves. It seems as if maybe it's not really saving, at least as a gif. Can't find it when opening the gallery either. Opening it in gallery from the download notification does show it, but it doesn't allow you to view any details on it either, nor does it let you share it when opening it like that. URL copy works fine, though maybe a toast message saying it's copied would help to let people know that it has copied, otherwise, unless you try to paste somewhere it appears as if it's done nothing. Share works fine as usual. Anyhow, I hope this helps. Thank you!

I've a attached a verbose log here for you to look at in case you need it. Had to zip it because apparently 2kb is too big for text on XDA? Anyhow, I hope this helps. Thank you!

Can't see anything weird in the logs.
The download triggers the android downloadmanager so the file can go to some weird place like /data/data/com.android.providers.download. I could change it so it goes to the downloads folder but then I need to add an extra permission.
And yeah adding some sort of message or toast is a good idea.

That would be great. I think I figured out that it goes to "/data/data/gif.overlay/cache/image_manager_disk_cache". The files in there were ".0" format, but when I changed it to ".gif" they showed the gifs I was trying to download. Assuming those aren't just the cached images from the search that is. Regardless you can't really access them or share them when they're outside of the sdcard.

No the ones inside the gif.overlay folder are either cached images from the search (those are not the final version but downsampled images to make it faster) or files saved before sharing. The downloaded ones should end up as giphy.gif somewhere where the downloadmanager puts it (in my case /data/data/com.android.providers.download).

Yeah. Just checked and you're right. The gifs do go to"/data/data/com.android.providers.download/cache/". Strange that they weren't showing up in my system wide search. Regardless, it would be cool if they could go to the "downloads" or "pictures" or a "/sdcard/Gif Overlay/" folder or something. Then there would be no end to the possibilities.
Now I just have to figure out why it's only connecting like half the time. Just tried again and it worked. Earlier though it wasn't. It must be something on my end. Not sure.
EDIT: Downloaded "Advanced Download Manager" from the Play Store and set it to auto incercept copied links for now, so that now I just have to click the copy function in the app and ADM asks me where I want to save it to. Clean flashed a new rom too and now I'm not having any more connection issues btw. Must've been something blocking it on my old configuration.
Changelog 1.5
* Added option to select window position.
* Bug fixing.
