Need a few pointers - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Questions & Answers

Hi I have just purchased a 2nd hand xz premium as my pixel 3a is now dead. Just need some pointers and advise as I'm going to root and ROM this device. My questions are do I need to back up the ta system and if I do can I restore it if I would ever go back to stock to be able to use Sony's DRM services again, also any recommendations as to which tools to use to unlock bootloader. I haven't done a Sony since the X10 mini days.
P.s the xz premium is a sexy device if I say so myself.

Not sure if it will work for Sola, but you may want to check out the test point metod to unlock the bootloader. You won't lose DRM. you can also relockmthe B any time you want.
fter 2 days of long hours of failure attempts, im so frustrated now. xda users say its not safe to unlock bootloader if phone's manufacturing date is over 11W29+, which will results in hard brick. my sola has date of 12W38, but i see many guide in unlocking sola's bootloader. so what the heck is all this bout? btw how to tell whether bootloader has been unlock? i used flashtool n i my sola reboot from fastboot. it seems ok(can be use) but i dono whether the bootloader is unlock......im so damn confused right now. this drives me so crazy........

Are you still looking for an answer about how to tell if bootloader is locked or unlocked?
just try to update with pc companion or update service , if it says modified software then the bootloader is unlocked , if it still continues ( cancel it ) then it means its locked.. I've not tried it but read it here.

[Q] Tmobile Z3 (6616)Root method available?

I finally returned my Nexus 6, because of the weight and big screen, I decided to go with Z3 because of its good looking.
But after reading the whole forum, I realize that I cannot root it, GOD!!!!!!!
Can someone tell me that our Developers are working on it?
I really don't want to return my phone again.

Of course they are, when it will be available, anyones guess
Umm it's been rootable for awhile.
Really? For tmobile version? Any link to how to root it? Thanks.
not currently rootable
here we go
the "helpful" side of XDA
here's your answer :
the z3 IS rootable, but only if you unlock the bootloader. there are potentially some issues with this - DRM keys, low light camera not as good.
you can't do a TA backup as you need to be rooted to do so.
The Z3 is NOT rootable currently, if you want to keep your bootloader locked.
hope that helps more than "yes/no" above

See subject line. "T-Mobile Z3 (D6616)". All of the T-mobile Z3's are "Bootloader unlockable = no". Not rootable currently.
The tmobile version can't be unlocked as of yet. I made the jump thinking it could be but over all even with out root this is a beast how many phone can be themed with out root i know this one does.

No, and we only lose those features if boot loader is unlocked not by rooting. But the T-Mobile variant has a locked boot loader so there is no way of losing the DRM features.

If theming is your thing, check out the Apex launcher. Works fine on my D6616 from T-Mobile.
any update to this? I just want root on my D6616. 4.4 rooted is fine with me. It's such a hassle finding details for T-mobile variant in this forum!

Do you have any suggestions, or are you just going to complain?

Well i mentioned earlier too in Z1 forums, that T-mobile variants should get another sub-forum for android development, as its locked and mostly all ftfs that are applicable for the non T-mobile versions can't easily be used for the T-mobile variant. I wasn't complaining, i was merely stating my experience looking for Z3 T-mobile variant files, resources etc in a forum where mostly everything can't be applied to this version, sadly.

[Q] Cyanogenmod

Hello there!
I'm thinking about flashing CM to my Z3, however, I'm concerned about losing the camera algorithms and all that stuff that's supposedly lost with root.
I just want to experriment since I used CM back when I had an S3, and it was way better that Samsung's stock software. I like Sony's UI but I would like to experiment with CM.
Anyway, what I want to ask is, can I recover these algorithms and stuff lost with rooting if I flash back an official firmware? I don't plan to stick with CM, just to see how it is.
Thank you.
You will need to backup drm keys before you unlock bootloader so that you can restore them when you revert to stock firmware.

Ok cool so, how do I do that? Could you please link a tutorial or something?

need rom advice

Just bought a z3 but need some advice.
I bought the phone and it was originally on vodaphone but was unlocked via one of those phone repair shops. (im not on vodaphone)
Now here comes what the issue is. I dont like the stock voda apps and the fact they control upedates its still on 5.0.2 build: 23.1.a.1.28 for reference.
Now what is the generic uk ftf file I need to flash?
Will I lose drm keys if I flash a new ftf?
will the phone return to vodaphone only? (I am sure it Shouldn't but maybe someone knows otherwise?)
Also should i go to 5 than 5.1 or straight to 5.1 ftf?
Thanks for any help been awhile since I have installed any custom roms ir even rooted a phone really. Been running the xperia z stock for 6 months
Dw took the dive and went off what I used to know with some educated guessing and all is good

Xperia Xz Rooting questions. Can't see the trees through the wood.

Dear very much awesome community of xda.
I am currently in possession of a Sony Xperia Xz.
I want to make improvements in my phone by obtaining root and flashing the duality rom. The problem is that am not entirely sure how to go about this.
I still have 1.5 years of warranty left. And would prefer not to destroy the possibility of a replacement or fix when I need it. I have read about the kingoroot method but I am not sure this will not wipe my drm keys.
Please help me to clarify this : Will kingoroot wipe my drm keys? Will unlocking bootloader destroy my drm functionality (like camera etc.) Will I have destroyed my warranty by flashing the stock based duality rom? And is there a method to flash this stock based rom without unlocking my bootloader?
Because of all the different topics on different sites I'm not sure what to believe anymore.
I hope this awesome community will help me out. Thank you in advance!
Cheers,
Cas.
Kingroot won't work and unlocking the bootloader will wipe your DRM keys.

You can't modify anything without unlocking your bootloader.

Don't use Kingo, ever on any device even. Crappy stuff.
You can backup your DRM keys before unlocking (and you should) there are nice guide here on how to (look for TA backup)
This way when you're done with non Sony ROM or want to use warranty you can restore all to "normal"
Most Kernel for the device have a DRM fix so you dont loose feature related to that when you use a ROM. Using my XZ with still same picture quality, sound etc...
You can see the different ROMs in ROM section and have different options what best suit your need
