Noob asks: What is POGO and the Samsung Xcover Pro - General Questions and Answers

POGO: I have Googled but cannot determine if it is a generalized interface type, a standardized proprietary plug/jack, an clever acronym, who knows. Would some kind soul point me at a tutorial?
Samsung Xcover Pro: Because I want a rugged smartphone with a removable battery and no bloatware, I got one of them. It's common else where, but not in the US. It's been my smartphone experience that one of the smartphone weak spots is the connection, which gets plugged and unplugged so many times, is around and collects crud...and when it fails, you are SOL. This phone has a POGO plug. Is there a USB to POGO cable for this phone? Since the US market presence is so small, you cannot even buy the replaceable battery, you have to get it shipped from Europe. Gamber-Johnson makes a nice cradle with a POGO connection for this phone, for a mere <gasp> $150
I know, I know, I am a masochist who always takes the path of greatest resistance (to say nothing of impedance and reluctance).
Maybe the simplest thing would be to get a magnetic USB-C cable to preserve the socket on the phone.

It's called a POGO because of the gold-plated pins. They are spring-loaded like a pogo stick. They are used in applications where a drop-in cradle provides support for the device that's to be charged.

I have purchased a Samsung Xcover6 Pro and I'm also looking at 3D printing a dock. Did you or anyone else find any electrical details of the POGO pins? Can we just apply voltage to the pins (in which polarity?) or is there a communications protocol required to enable charging?

Apologies everyone. I didn't think to check Thingiverse. There's a design here and it appears to accept voltage with VCC left and GND right.
XCover Pro Pogo Charger by xnappo
Remixed from @julvr's excellent work for XCover Pro. I used these pogo pins:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FQ52W88/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (and I have a lot of them so....) 9V is needed for Quick Charging - could support higher but 9V should be safe for now. Once...

Good find! I ended up buying a commercial unit from KOAMTAC. It was expensive but I do not regret it after more than a year of use. The charger for a spare battery was a plus.

EDIT: oops..never mind...just realized I was looking at a different phone model..I'm a tool, lol.

I can report that I have designed and printed a cradle for my Xcover 6 Pro but the tolerences are very tight and it requires fiddling with the position of the phone to get it to work. I initially used a bench power supply which resulted in good charging speed but I connected to the positive and negative of an old broken (phone end) USB lead and I am getting slow charging speed from a USB charger. I assume that some circuit is required on the data pins to enable high current on a USB outlet. I have tried several USB power supplies.
EDIT: I have replaced the USB cable with a 5V 3.5A PSU (non USB) and AccuBattery is reporting ~6.5W charging speed.
I can also confirm that there is no increase in charging speed between 9V and 12V and charging shuts down at 12V.

Typical way of enabling fast charging is to short the USB data pins together, but this maxes at 1.5amps by USB spec, or 7.5 watts. Beyond that you're getting in to data signals to negotiate higher charge rates.
A fairly decent explanation is here - https://microchipdeveloper.com/usb:bc12

Looking for USB Car Cigarette Lighter Adapter

I have had about 5-6 of these.. every one I get my hands on is junk. When using the GPS, with the phone pluged in (non stock cable) I still end up killing my battery dead. The second it comes off the charger is turns off.
Can anyone point me in the direction of one that charges correctly?
Thx in advance!
I use my wife's from Verizon and it seems to work ok. It has a USB port so I can use my normal, thick data cord. You're probably running into ones where the cord is too thin to give proper charge. This one works great with the data cord.
I have the Samsung car dock. It seems to do fine with just GPS. I don't think the Epic can draw enough current to maintain it's charge if you're using any other features. If I'm running GPS + Streaming Music, it will discharge eventually and become very hot.
You need
1. a reasonable quality USB charging cable so that the Epic will draw the maximum current, or a power adapter that grounds the data pins. If the epic thinks it's connected to a computer it won't draw the maximum current.
2. an adapter that will provide 600ma+. I used the one from Griffin until it broke* and I bought the Samsung cradle. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=usb+car+power+adapter&hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=1150301903319147928&sa=X&ei=4h0ZTtSyL4aDgAeA7rH0Dw&ved=0CIUBEPMCMAE
Hope this helps.
*Griffin agreed to fix it, but it's been several weeks since I sent it in. I'm a little unhappy with them at the moment, but the adapter was fine until it broke, maybe you'll have better luck.

seems like a good price. i ordered 3 single usb 1 amp units for 1.99. I'll give feedback once there in my hands.
sounds weird but goto radioshack or wherever & get one for a palm pre it works great charges really fast to, try & get palm brand because thats what im usin
Not as strange as you might think. As the pre/pixi charger is 1amp allowing it to power the touchstone with enough current. Most
12v lighter plug USB adapters are .5amps.
Also the pre/pixi lighter plug charger requires the cable that comes with it. And although it is a micro usb the end that goes in the lighter plug is not standard its thinned and narrower.
+1 on the pre charger... been using one since I had the pre, and it is awesome. phone still discharges when streaming pandora and running GPS, but GPS by itself results in a very slow net charge on my drive to work.
We sell a case logic brand charger at work for 15 bucks that is rated at 800mA, used it a few times and know a few people that have one. I'm sure online price is cheaper.

ive never had that problem mine always charges no matter what
I get mine off of EBay. Just make sure its output is 1amp.
USB and DATA cable
That's because if you use a USB adapter and a DATA cable the phone only charges at half it's rating. This is because it thinks it's pulling the power from a computer USB port and it doesn't want to overload (and fry) the port.
I picked up one of these, opened it up and soldered the two middle USB pins together. Now it allows my phone to charge with a data cable at it's max rate.

there are pretty sweet power inverters that run 30ams, so you can plug in laptops and such. pretty compact, AND they come with 2 usb charging ports.
there under 50 bux.
I use a j-lo brand car charger. Its for a gps and charges @ 1000mah. I also have a power inverter, the cheap one from walmart with 2 ac outlets and 1 usb port. Both of these work very well.

2.1 amp car charger question

Bought a dual charger for the car, has 1 amp and 2.1 for devices like tables. When I plug the Tab Plus in the tablet gives me an X for charging and doesn't charge. Tried different cables. Any ideas??? GT 6210
Not compatible mHa...
Sent from my GT-P6210 using Tapatalk
So only Samsung OEM car and wall chargers work??? I even trid a lower amp charger in the house figuring it would just take longer to charger, and still get the X if it's not the Samsung wall charger.
2.1a is plenty to charge it, but as you said, only Samsung chargers will do it. It is highly annoying.

Interesting to note:
When the Tab/Tab+ is connected to an HDMI adapter (either dongle or stand version: I have both) the tab will draw power from ANY USB source and show it as charging. A generic 2.1 amp charger will add to the battery even while playing MAME on my HDTV using a BT PS3 controller while WIFI is enabled (a 500mA charger works too but cant keep up....in other words it will deplete your battery...just slower). The same generic charger will NOT charge my Tab+ when NOT connected to the HDTV/HDMI adapter.
It's charging, but it's only pulling 450mA. This is a safety measure to prevent pulling too much current from a computer USB port.
This is nuts. If it charges through an HDMI cable??It charges slowly through a computer??? I'm surprised nobody has come out with a "charge only" cable so it works generically. Obviously some of the pins can be left off or crossed to trick it.
I'd buy 3 and keep them all over the place!
I've seem them for Apple,I devices, even was shipped one by accident for my Ipod.
I'm writing CableJive! Maybe if they hear from enough of us they support out product. '[email protected]'
Eureka! I grabbed an old USB version 1 extension cable (female to Male) and plugged it on the end of my Tab sync power cable. Plugged it into Tab OEM wall charger, worked fine. Then I plugged it into a generic wall charger for phones (1amp) and IT IS CHARGING!
Still won't work on car adapter, tried 1 amp, 2.1amp, and 2.2 amp.
Ordered USB 2 extensions to test.
Have you made sure that the plug will charge something else? Make sure it will charge your phone or something. I know those dual micro-chargers have to be pushed with a lot more force than you would think. I would also check both ports on the dual charger. Usually only one of the ports will output 2.1 amps while the other only outputs 1 amp.
Quick semi-related charger question: are all Samsung Tab chargers the same? Or, at least, are they cross-compatible for charging?
I've got an imported tablet, and it's charging very slowly with a UK adaptor (which was supplied by the import company... had been expecting more, I have to say).
If I tool up and go shopping for a genuine Samsung Galaxy Tab charger, will any of them do, or do I need to be specific? Does anyone know?
i got one of these handy.

i bought it from DX few months back. http://dx.com/p/usb-power-adapter-for-samsung-p1000-81753?item=1
and it charges my fone with any usb chargers i have.. i also use it for my 2.1A car charger and works as expected.
I second the adapter recommendation shown above. I just wish it had some way to tie it to the cable so it doesn't get misplaced. They're pretty cheap, though, so I bought a couple extra.

here's mine..its tied with my extra sync cable.. these adapters are fragile and one of the plastic clips broke.. secured it with a zip tie and now even when i dropped it several times the white case stays secure.. i bring it with me all the time...
Have you guys tried these adapters both on AC and Car 2.1amps WITH the Tab? The references I see above are for phone.
Oops...never mind, went to sight and saw a reviewer listed Tabs.

Nokia DT-900 Qi charger Teardown & Review

I picked up the Nokia DT-900 from my local Verizon store for $49. When placing the device on the charger it will charge cycle a number of times before stabilizing into a charge. Last night I had a issue where I had to remove and replace the device because the charger was blinking after failure to charge 10+ times. The positioning doesn't matter as long as it's on the keystone, although the Nexus slides off rather easily.
The stock adapter is +12VDC 0.75A. I tried hacking in a +12VDC 1.75A transformer for faster charging rates but the device failed to do anything. I re-spliced the stock transformer and it still works. With daydream activated the keystone maintains to drains the battery as it cannot provide enough charge to power the device. For $49 this product is a compromise to failure in wireless charging technology due to charging rate and slick surface.

Inside the device. The back pops right off with a proper tool. Notice the 3 temp sensors between the coils.
Underside of the circuit
The maximum charge rate is set for 789 mA and at 4ish volts this is less than 4 watts. When the battery gets full the rate goes down, so try again with an empty battery.
There is not much use in a bigger adapter.
This Qi charger isn't good, I tried it .
Bye!

Nokia Qi charger and magnet
Hi, I'm sorry if the question is a nonsense but.... would a usual magnet, attached to the plastic cover of the charging plate, interfere with charging capabilities of the plate? or is there any Qi standard wireless charger, which would hold the phone with a magnet? would be a good charging accessory of the car.
thank you
Ended up returning mind and going with the WCP-300. Had little to no luck with these, zero issues with WCP-300.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
I got one of these.. and the 1st few times I tried it, it was working great.. no issues at all...
now I can't get my N4 to stay charging for more than 5 minutes (then it stops, beeps, tries again, fails, etc)... I leaning towards returning it.
Does anyone know what the thickness without the casing is?
I've got some new tear down pics I will post soon. I just ended up using this charger in my car based on your review and a few others. thanks for posting this.

I would also like to know this!
I've heard no but it goes against the physics, so I'd say yes. It's not a good idea to have magnets next to a phone anyway, unless it's a weak case one. That ought to be OK on the charger too
By backwards engineered alien technology.....

You can open it up like this to make it thinner:
http://imgur.com/x5QyghB
4 mm PCB with power plug
3 mm PCB without power plug (if you solder your own power supply to it from car cigarette lighter for example which also regularly uses same 12 volts as this Qi charger takes as input)
4 mm coil
All measurements are approximate.

Wireless charging

Is it possible on X2 ? I see wireless charging receivers available for Android devices without Qi built in. Anyone know if one could be used with the X2?
Yes there are wireless chargers out there will work with any device that has a metal body.
I thought the receiver had to be on contact with the battery... But if not great... Can you send me a link please to some suitable wireless chargers? thank you
It is interesting were to find a wireless charger for X2, anyone has a link where to buy one?
on the other hand, is it possible to fix NFC in the Mediapad X2 ? It would be great
The misinformation in this topic is large...
Wireless charging normally uses phone's with a plastic case because the coils on the inside ( its induction charging ), capture the energy and transfer it to the battery ( using specific electronic ).
The problem with phone's like the X2 is that there backside is metal. Metal will disrupt the induction charging ( technically it will turn your phone into a hot plate for cooking ). Qualcomm has some technology to enable wireless charging with a metal case phone but its more or less proof of concept. I do not remember if anybody is using this now.
But you can NOT do wireless charging without the correct technology in the form off:
a) integrated in your phone = a coil + a bit of electronics that connects to your phone's charging
b) a external coil that connects to your usb port ( like a external charging case ).
Yes, without nfc built in, the best bet is the external coil pack with a connection to the micro-usb port.
Right now only something like this will work.
http://www.qiwireless.com/wireless-charging-htc-one-m8/
You can use a opaque case to hide this stuff behind the phone back.

3 remarks:
1- I'm not sure that even if the back metallic plate of the phone is not between the coil of the charger and the one of the receiver, it will not heat (and eat the efficiency) under the magnetic field.
2- Those Qi usually produce <500mA to the battery, quite slow with ordinary phones, imagine with the 5000mA one of the mediapad X2
3 As the USB is at the bottom extreme right of the phone, the recievers with a USB connection in their middle will not fit.
I have tested the rear of the phone and it does not appear to be magnetic and if that is the case then a qi mod is highly possible. With the research I have done, aluminum is okay, like the iphones are made of powder coated stainless steal so it would not work on them. I found a 1amp charger n amazon, I don't believe they make anything bigger because of heat. 1amp takes longer but it works.

It works fine with no issues. Only problem is the X2 usb is off to the side like someone mentioned.
I use the http://www.aliexpress.com/item/QI-w...-7D-503L-7D-501u-MediaPad-X1/32389792024.html
You have to request the usb version that is reversed (For the X1 and X2)
I also made a car holder with the Qi built in. (.stl provided) However the fine tuning of where you have the Qi adapter on the phone is a pain.
The sensitivity is tough, hitting bumps will make it go off and on, but no big deal.
Anyone ever find QI wireless charger receiver for X2? As mentioned in previous posts - all the ones out there have the USB plug in the middle, which doesnt fix the X2

Will magnetic USB charge cables screw up waterproofing?

This is a question about magnetic USB cables and waterproof phones such as the Galaxy S8...
I assume you know what I am talking about when I say 'magnetic USB cable' ... One of those cables where you leave a magnetic 'lug' plugged into the micro usb or type c port on the phone so that you essentially get a magnetic charger setup similar to the mag-safe port found on Macbooks.
My question is, if I leave one of the lugs plugged into a waterproof phone, will the exposed copper pins cause the phone to short out in water (or even pocket sweat for that matter)? Does anyone have any experience with these cables (such as the WSKEN Mini 2) and using them in water? How does the waterproofing mechanism work on the phone's type c port? If it works by detecting a 'short' between 2 pins and disabling the port while wet,
maybe the exposed pins would create the same effect, depending on which pins are brought out of the type c port...

Hello, I'm not into magnetic chargers and there's no details about how it works at some point, however i thought about your question and it was simple to answer regarding the info available on the Internet.
the magnetics also will transfer the their energy into an electric one, thus, if you put it in water, you know how electrical energy and water go, so i don't recommend placing it in water as it will have the same effect as the normal charger, but while doing my researches, i noticed that some phones that after they got a wet port, the usb cable chargers didn't work, where as the magnetic charger did.
About the Galaxy waterproof
water can remain in the handset after it's been dunked – and if you add electricity, that can lead to terminal short circuiting. so if it was to detect something wrong with the amount of current running to it, it wouldn't charge and will warn you.
I hope that i could help answering the questions
I have direct experience with this situation via my Motorola G3 mounted on my motorcycle. This past week, the unit charged fine on a 600 mile trip, some of which was wet. However, on the return home, the phone went dead, and I realized it wasn't charging correctly. Upon disassembly, I found the magnetic lug visibly blackened on the "male" section. Evidently some moisture got in and things shorted out. In addition, the phone's charging port is now critical of how a standard usb charging cable is plugged in, so I assume there is some damage to the charging port, as well. Luckily, this phone's charging port is a fairly easy and inexpensive repair (<$10 part, no soldering). I did try to use a second mag cable and lug on the phone, but it was non-functional, hence my assumption of damage to the phone's USB port.
