Hi
I've been trawling through the forums for a couple days now to see if anyone has come up with a solution to, or a reason why Samsung doesn't leave the proximity sensor on while the always on display is active anymore (since the Note S10).
I know the sensor has been moved behind the screen. But it seems to function in the same way it used to. It still blanks the screen during a call, if I hold something over it up to about 20mm away. Just not with the always on display.
I'm currently using aodNotify as a sort of workaround. But would much prefer if the always on display just worked like every other damn phone!
Does anyone know the reason why Samsung has disabled this? Uses too much power? I Don't know.

Working in what way ? Mine works as in, it gets brighter or dimmer according to the light around me.....or are you wanting/expecting AOD to turn off when the screen is covered ?

Exactly, the former of what you said is all it* does when AOD is active.
In any case this is now normal operation possibly done to help save battery.
*I'm not sure that the proximity sensor is the ambient light detector?
I think what the OP is saying is that for example if you cover the screen whilst the AOD is on, it used to turn the AOD off before. It no longer does this.
Behavior started with the S10 series.

So if you had it in your pocket it use less battery?
Interesting.
On most other phones, and Samsung's prior to the Note 10. If you put the phone face down, or placed it in your pocket, the always on display would turn off to save battery. They no longer do this.
I wonder if there's a work around for this somehow.

I've recently purchased a Note Edge. Pretty happy with it, although there's one software "feature" that really bothers me. The Note Edge and the Note 4 are identical in specs, but the Note 4 is brighter when they're both on max brightness... Why? When the Note Note Edge is on max brightness, it is a good deal darker than the Note 4 on max brightness. When you put the Edge on max brightness, it is still being limited. The Note Edge will only go to the "true" max brightness when it is on auto, and there is a very bright light shinning on the light sensor(such as the sun or a flashlight). The Note 4, however, doesn't have this feature and go's to "true" max brightness even on manual. Is it possible to change/void this setting so that max brightness can be achieved even on manual and without having a bright light source shinning on the sensor?
I read somewhere if you leave it on auto. Then outside in the sunlight it will go past the max brightness so you can see. Perhaps thats the difference between the note 4 and the Edge brightness setting.

This is in the wrong section... (Should be in Q&A) but anyway...
I have a Note 4 & Note Edge, and the brightness "issue" the op mentions is completely true... (I noticed that the 1st day, and was disappointed with the Edge too) However... here is the good news...
-> If I go outside in the sunlight with both devices at the same time... The Note Edge becomes equal or even a bit brighter than the Note 4... So... at least for me, The "issue" is no longer an issue... I have done this various times with same results... hope this helps the OP feel better...
Oops. Sorry I didn't realize it should be in the question and answer section. I just started using xda. And do you think there will be a module that can change this?

Idk why you need the screen so bright anyways.
I can see mines clearly in the day time and at night.
I am willing to bet that the MAX brightness you said. Isnt on there due to the smaller battery.
I know another member on the board has said something about using Lux apk, but i dont dont remember what was said.
I've just realised that in bright sunlight when I leave the brightness in auto mode the screen is much brighter than if I would use the maximum manual setting. I'm very happy with it ,this is an amazing device !
Cheers

Guys the samsung NoteEdge on lollipop has that issue. Basically you can't switch auto brightness fully off it will control your brightness even if uncheck the box. After weeks of searching and trying I found a kind of solution because I love to see my screen in all his power and brightness. Solution is call "screen filter" can be found in the play store for free. Set the brightness at 100% and switch it on. You'll see the difference.

I have the same issue.
Hey all,
Just found this thread and discovered something interesting.
Holding a magnet to the bottom left of the screen increases the screen brightness to 100% as per the note 4's brightness.
I have both handsets and considering a genuine Sammy flip case for the note, and also want to insert a generic wireless charging strip between the handset and the back case.
I wanted to see if it's a simple magnet in the Sammy flip cover which deactivates the main screen and activates the edge display. It's not, a magnet to the front just restores the screen brightness to that of the note four.
I can confirm that the magnet does not change the brightness when in automatic mode. I can also confirm that when in manual mode the brightness does not fly up to 100%, but rather just nudges it up very slightly to that of the equivalent brightness level set on the note 4.
The magnet in the Sammy flip cover means that the edge display is always at it's brightest when the cover is closed because battery drain on that tiny strip is negligable.
So, it's pretty clear now that this is a Sammy software adjustment to counter a smaller battery compounded by a wider screen.
I'd have preferred if we had a software switch to turn this damned thing off, but I'm guessing a decreased battery life wouldn't bode well consumers expecting more for their extra cash for the edge, and I suppose the only real world difference on auto would be if both handsets were tested in bright lighting conditions. Sneaky Sammy.
The note edge flip cover has a few mm of padding on the back of the handset I'm going to see if I can source a strong but thin neodineum magnet that will keep brightness at note 4 levels and slide it into the cover or inside it above the battery.
There also seems a strong magnetic source on the bottom right side of the screen, I presume it's to activate a magnetic switch in the flip cover which accounts for the terminals on the flip cover connector.
Once I have a flip case and the generic wireless charging receiver strip delivered I'll see if I can combine the two with the magnet as well.
The extra battery drain can't be that bad? Surely it's just a matter of percentage battery size decrease.
Anyway, someone clever should be able to find a software alteration to achieve the same now we know where to look, but alas that's not me!
hi
I have the gear s2 classic I was just wondering if using the always on feature with a digital face burn the screen ?
no one?
I think if it's as much of a concern for you, just disable it as I did. AMOLED screens from my prior understanding are prone to burn-in that's why with devices such as the S7 and S7 edge that have an always on interface they move the display around every so often to prevent burn in. I had an always on watch face enabled for my gear S2, however, i watched it for a little bit (really small amount of time) and didnt see it change anything so I thought why risk it and just disabled it. There's really nothing I need to see on the watch itself [ever] real-time so simply moving my hand up to enable the display was not a huge deal for me, and saving the display from possible burn in was worth not having the always on display. Just my 2 cents.

When in ambient mode the watch face moves around by several pixels every minute or so to make sure there isn't burn in.
However if you have an app to keep the full power watch face on, then you may have burn in issues. It is an AMOLED screen.

The "dimmed" watch face that is all white/grey with fewer elements, is the ambient mode watch face. So, you should be good to go with that feature enabled. This is what I have enabled.
However, there are some users that want the full watch face on all the time. There are apps/ways out there to do it. That is what could cause burn in.
Rob
The dimmer the screen is the less chance of burn in.

has anyone that's using always on with a dimmed face noticed burn in?
I'm using Waze app every single day for about 1.5 hour.
in the past when i had galaxy S4, after 2 month of daily use, i noticed on white pages i still see all the static banners and buttons of waze.
baisically, using Waze in daily basis, burn-in my screen in the static area of the app like the up and down banners, speed meter etc...
Can it happen also in my new galaxy s8+? what to you think? did the amoled technology haven't changed a lot in the past 4 or 5 years?
There is a new feature in Waze called battery saver, it dims the screen when you are over a certain speed and a certain distance from the next instruction, that might help with it.
Though to be honest I use it for about the same amount of time everyday and don't even think about any burn in, its definitely not something that I've noticed happening on my phone so far

I'm sorry if you dont like it but its the truth. I absolutely love the Samsung phones so I'm not against the phone. I've had the Note, S3, S4, S5, S6E, S7E and now the S8+.
I'm the first person to correct somebody wrongly bashing these phones but in this case it is what it is mate. Its well documented and accepted as fact that screen burn in on Amoled is more prevalent than some other display technologies. You need to be a little bit more mindful with Amoled if you want to keep the screen looking nice with heavy use.

Based on your first response you obviously didn't grasp mine at all whatsoever. I wasn't comparing Amoled directly to any other screen technology but the fact remains that the prevelance of screen burn in is generally higher than other screen types in general. That's not just conjecture on my part.
Its accepted fact. Also I'd appreciate it if you dropped the childish, rude and flippant attitude towards me. I was simply responding to your straw man argument.

There was one week where I used it excessively. And I kept the screen full bright. When I saw the screen burn in with the arrow of waze navigation. I started looking up on the Internet to solve the burn in issue somehow. That's when I found out that it's a common issue on amoled screens apparently. And the only way to solve it was to send it back to Samsung for a repair or replacement.

Yeah unfortunately its one of those things that you just have to be mindful of, even when you're not on full brightness.
I was pretty lucky with most of my galaxy phones especially considering how heavily I used them, although my S7E was an exception.
I still have the phone and after just 13 months you can clearly see discoloration on the screen and admittedly very feint burn in on UI elements ie. the status bar. The screen discoloration is pretty bad and perfectly matches the YouTube app, where the video is playing up top and the static white comment section below put uneven "wear" on my screen. I'm now trying to make a habit to watch longer YouTube videos in fullscreen to avoid a similar result.

So I had this problem. I tried all the solutions I could from the Google Forums and the Google Pixel 2 help support themselves. I discovered that the 8.1 update broke the proximity sensor. So I just received my replacement. Some people "claim" that taking off the screen protector works, but I was skeptical because the phone worked with the screen protector on when I was running 8.0 (Moreover, as I transferred the SAME screen protector onto my replacement running 8.1, the replacement works to perfection. I also played around with my previous Pixel 2 XL after resetting the phone and the proximity still does not work, even without the screen protector). You can go to the Google forum (under the calls link, because my assumption is that calling on any app on your phone just leaves you with a black screen) and test out all possible solutions. If none work, just call Google and explain the problem and ask for a replacement :good:. Hope this helps, man.

Okay, this is what you need to do. Buy airduster and nicely blow air over the top speaker. Not sure this phone is dust proof. There seems a small gap between the lower edge of the speaker grill and phone screen. You can test by yourself, take a paper the edge of paper goes for a mm or so. Use air duster few times and your proximity sensor works. I think it's not software problems, seems this pixel 2 xl has serious quality control. Google needs to recall this phone!!
Sounds logical, because I can turn my screen on and off by bringing a metallic pen near the sensor and away from it, so if you get metal particles in that little "slot" by the speaker, they'd probably affect the sensor. (Especially if they were magnetized - and a lot of seemingly "where id it come from" dust is actually from construction projects. [We used to rent two way radios to construction companies, and they came in about once a week with "dead" speakers - it was tiny steel particles loading the speaker up to the point that the cone couldn't move - and they traced a sample back to a particular steel beam - that the phone had been near when some rivet holes were drilled in it.]) So keep the phones away from cities that have hi-rise construction projects in progress. (This phone is designed for use on a different planet - using a USB 3.0 port and a USB 3.0 cable to flash a ROM bricks the phone. I'm surprised that it's not allergic to air too.)
I can make the sensor revert back to far from near by pressing gently the top bezel next to lateral edge of the speaker grill on left side. Sensor reverts back to far from near. Don't know the mechanism and definately doesn't look like software issue.

You're not alone - it doesn't work on mine either. I concluded that Samsung removed it/it's not a Wear OS feature, as it wasn't in the setup tutorial, and there's no setting for it. Although I have seen others like galaxys claim that it works, I'm not convinced...

Depends if you're in a hurry or not
Works on mine, too. The obvious questions are:
A. Is your always on display setting activated?
B. If yes, does your watch face have a dimmed view?
If a is yes and b is no, then placing the palm on the watch won't cause a change even if the sensor works. I had that issue for a while with a watch maker face that didn't have a dimmed view.

What if a is no and b is sorta, as auto brightness is on? *Edit*: Just checked with auto brightness off, still doesn't work. Are you sure your screen isn't just timing out as you try this?
If a is no, then b is irrelevant. If AOD is off, then the palm gesture should turn off the screen, period. The fact that the screen goes a bit darker proves that the ambient light sensor works, sure, but I'm unsure if that's the only sensor that determines whether the palm was placed on the watch. Might be multiple sensors?
Just saw your edit. I will test it.
Edit 2 after testing: my screen timeout is 15 seconds - the palm gesture is maybe 1 second. So that's not it.

Interesting. Thought maybe it might be related to using AOD, but nope, doesn't work either. Your's the regular Watch 4 or the Classic?
I use this feature a lot it works perfectly on my gw4
For me it works in both the cases aod on and off... Difference being with aod on it dims the screen and with aod off it completely blacks out the screen
It also silences the call and stops the vibration when a call is received

Reset didn't do anything - other than show me how poor the backup is on the watch, and force me to install SHM Mod again... I doubt it's a faulty sensor (as everything else, i.e., auto brightness, works fine) - maybe my palms are too translucent?
Works on mine when bought new and then now. In between I had issues. After buying the watch I tested everything. Then about two days after my screen protector order arrived. PLaced it on the watch and I thought all was good. Eventually this topic came up in another forum and I checked mine. It wasn't working. Whatever I did it just seems that the palm to screen off wasn't working as it should. So I did a reset, etc. Still not working. I thought, who cares? It's not really a feature I use everyday anyway but somehow for me that means there was an issue. Then as I was looking at the screen I realized there were some lifts on the perimeter of the screen protector. I removed it. Then I tested the palm to screen off. Not once did it NOT work. I let it go without a protector for a day or so and it was still working. Since then I didn't use the tempered glass protector anymore. I bought one of those film type protectors and now the palm to screen off is working.
Thanks @thephantom for the hint! Apparently it's working on mine as well, I just needed to put my palm much closer to the watch screen (in comparison to my Gear S3 where it was enough to put palm over the watch and not touch it at all), I'm pretty sure it should work for others too on GSW4, once you press your palm against the watch (touching the bezel with your palm with light pressure ) - it was just wrong expectation on my side from the other model...

Well, I'll be damned - that does work. In fact, using the ball of your thumb seems to work well, and every time.
