First off you need an r15 5g sim.
I had 5G without the R15 SIM. I'm on Tmobile.

solution
The solution that ended my problem is as follows
And must be done every time you restart the device (something is better than nothing)
1- go disable mobile data
2- go dial *#*#4636#*#*
3- choose the phone information
4- go down to ( Set Preferred Network Type )
5- choose [NR/LTE/TDSCDMA/GSM/WCDMA]
6- the go enable mobile data the 5g will be activate
remember must be done every time you restart the device (something is better than nothing)
good luck and take care
How do you know if you have the "r15" sim? I'm on T-Mobile and I just used the sim card that the phone came with.

This procedure "did" make it look like 5G was now an option...but I don't think it actually turned on the 5G because everything else still came up as LTE. I think this procedure is just turning on the visible setting without really doing anything. My $0.02

Try this. You can manually set to 5g
*#*#866#*#*
^ this works if engineer_config is changed to:
encrypt_app=false
encrypt_adb=false
Locate in root shell with modded recovery. Adb pull. Copy to SD card, then pc, modify--> /Mnt/vendor/persist/engineermode/engineermode_config --change bools to false, adb shell, go to directory, rm -rf config file that is there, push your modified one there, reboot then try 866
Or the generic version with less functionality *#*#4636#*#*
With great power comes great risk of wrecking it

There are two videos to show you how to do it but none of them are in English
So try your best to keep up with one of them
Arabic :
France :
Good luck
OK, I will watch the one I have not seen yet...maybe I can deduce what is going on.
Can anybody explain to me why we have to even do this?
I bought a 5G phone and 5G is not turned on?
I have complained to OnePlus but hey...I think they only understand Klingon...so you know I might as well complain to my Poodle.
OOOOkkkaaaaayyyyyy...so here is my report...
I had to use both videos, but the one in what I believe was Arabic was way too fast to follow, not to mention it was in Arabic with no subtitles. The French version was recorded a little slower and it did have subtitles. I employed YouTube's subtitle translation service and it was like having a 3 year old explain highly technical procedures. UUGGGHHHH!!!!
However, thanks to the fact that I was a Windows Systems Engineer for 25 years I was able to recognize the various screens/windows and sludge my way through the entire process only to be rewarded with a procedure that changed NOTHING on the 8T. Lovely! :silly:
While I do appreciate the videos, they apparently are not relative to the 8T for some unknown (at least to me) reason!
Now I did note at the start of this thread that someone mentioned that this did not work on the 8T...so maybe I should have just listened to him and saved my time. To be fair though, I've had more fun getting a root canal than slogging through a foreign language video in a futile attempt to activate a cell signal that should be activated OOTB!
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread so far, and I hope OnePlus gets their heads out of their a$$ and make this thing work as expected.

I couldn't get it to work. Tried two sims, neither were recognized and with the second one the tray jammed pretty badly and barely could get it out.

All you do cut the sim off the simcard and stick it to the sd card
Seen on YouTube how to do it, but not asking that.
Asking to see a good result that works, so I know the quality of finish I need to get for it to fit.
Dont have the video link I did use.
But i didint cut it, did warm the simcard and pulled the plastic away..
Thats all I got.

Hi everyone!
I did it and it worked ( see screenshot). I have now 2 sim cards + 64 gb micro SD, so it's not software related (running stock Android M).
Be very careful. Maybe I just got lucky. Don't try it if you need your sim card, make a backup of the micro SD as well. You can practice on an old sim card and old micro SD before doing it on your own sim card.
Sorry for the double post but I want to add this picture of my finished setup :
I removed the sim chip by using a lighter to make the plastic soft ( not more than a few seconds to not burn the chip) then I had to cut the sim chip with scissors in order for it to fit on the sim tray ( See picture). I glued the chip under the micro SD card (I used super glue but it's not removable, so use something else) at the exact right position ( use another sim to see, and pay attention to the direction).
Sorry for my bad English, I'm French.

Sorry bud, but you failed to mention what Honor 8 model you owned. This might become a problem for some new Honor 8 owners since the only Honor 8 devices with full dual-sim active are the European and the Chinese versions. USA versions (FRD-L04 and FRD-L14) do not support full dual-sim active. Please be more specific in your OP. Thanks.

So my questioning is:
Is it possible to change the firmware from the FRD-L04 to the European firmware? I have the USA version and I would like to get the second SIM active.
Regards.
There's a thread on that (https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/help/dual-sim-manager-model-frd-l04-t3461671). Based on that, the FRD-L04 model is missing the IMEI for the second SIM slot (as to be expected, since there's no point for Honor to reserve and register an IMEI that is never used). So most likely not possible. (This is based on what I read, I have no way to try anything since I own the European dual-SIM version).
No point installing European firmware as it will not able a second Sim..
US Honor 8 do not support 2 sims..

As the title suggests this is a guide to disable certain network bands (GSM/WCDMA/CDMA/LTE) that are not supported by your carrier. Theoretically it should help save battery as the phone won't search for those bands anymore. I'm currently testing this myself and will provide feedback too. The more users try this the better as more feedback will provide better insight to how much battery saving we can get by doing this (if any).
Pre-requisites:
1. The phone needs to be rooted.
2. A free app called Network signal Guru from play store. Link below :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qtrun.QuickTest
3. The bands that your carrier supports. Use Google/ wiki to search for your carrier and all the bands it supports.
Here it goes :
1. Install network signal guru and give it SU permissions.
2. The app will check for compatibility and download some "online configurations".
3. After the app opens click on the menu and select lock bands.
4. Click on the corresponding network and and UNTICK the bands that you found are NOT supported by your carrier. You might get a message saying that this might force the phone into a power cycle. Ignore it or just stop if you're "not interested now". ?
5. Do this for all the network types.
6. The phone might reconnect to the carrier (you'll notice by network icon in the status bar )
7. Exit the app if you want as these settings still stick if the app is not running.
That's it. You've successfully disabled the bands that you found are not supported by your carrier.
Currently I've tested it on MIUI 9.4.18 and should work on any ROM/ kernel as long as you do it right.
Notes:
1. The settings are removed after a reboot.
2. You might have extra options in the bands if you're using two carriers i.e dual SIM . The secondary carrier is marked by "extended" and the primary by "primary". Select the bands accordingly.
3. The LTE bands look to be "shared" by both the SIMs. So just select the bands of both the carriers if you're using LTE on both.
4. Try to give as much feedback as possible.
Kinda risky cause we have different network band usage and maybe "I'm in Philippines" I might screw something up but hey, I can restore it back. Worth a try I guess, thanks for the info.

It isn't risky at all. I've been doing this on many phones since a long time and never had any problem (unless you're really really unlucky ?.
If you're worried about "power cycle", it just means that the phone will restart and nothing else.
Edited.

The phone by default connects to the WiFi with better signal which more often will be the 2.4g. I see that you can't disable 2.4g on the router. I remember an app called smart WiFi selector and another app called WiFi 5 that can help you. Google them.

The app needs /Dev/diag to communicate with the modem and some kernels disable it. That's why it won't work on those kernels and I can't do anything about. You can ask the Dev of the kernel to include it.

I don't have an SIP account and that seems to be the only option under the app Phone>three dots>settings>calls
The answer seems to be "not in beta 3".
BTW, I'm using it as a daily driver and I'm very pleased for a Beta. Again, so far!
I use Dark mode on all my computer/browsers and now with Dark mode in Android Q, this is awesome. I can't help but believe it should really help battery life. Bluetooth is working fine with all my devices..... AVR, auto and headsets. connecting in Aptx. I'm a big audio fan.
It's just amazing that this two year old phone is being brought back to life with Q!

I just joined Google Fi with my ph-1 knowing that it would not automatically switch from T-Mobile to sprint but I thought I could force it to switch with dialer codes or signal spy. After trying it and it failed to switch and doing some searching it seems like I’m just stuck with it on T-Mobile. Is this the case for you?

Hello everyone.
I'm a fresh owner of a Poco X3 Pro 8+256, EU version, up-to-date.
I have some questions and I hope someone can answer:
1. Reception is... deficient! I mean, using same operator, I have - in the same "almost blind spot", better signal with my old Huawei Mate 10 Lite rather with this. Does someone else noticed same? Is there any way to improve?
2. I miss my call recording. On my old one, stuck at Android 8, I used ACR. On this one ACR doesn't work. The only one, stupid proof, is BoldBeast Call Recorder. Do you have others to propose?
3. I don't dig much some of the default apps, like Dialer (it's stock Google Dialer) and others. Do you have some alternatives to default apps, but not requiring root?
4. Is there a cheatsheet to stuff to do before using the phone as a daily driver? Apart debloating...
5. Speaking of debloating, does it really change something in the experience? Is there a safe list for bloatware to uninstall?
6. Does this phone has the possibility of video output through USB-C? If so, how to do it?
7. Is there a list of codes to try for this phone?
Thank you in advance for taking time to read this and to reply.

Change the 4G band of both phone to be using the same band to check if the signal is really not working.
4G signals have different bands. Different phones have different bands using. And even same model phones, in different countries, they have different bands.
If you buy Redmi K40 (from China), you may have signal problem in the US. Poco F3 (Global) has better signal coverage compare to Redmi K40 outside China. Even if Redmi K40 has same spec as Poco F3, it still has this problem.
Use NetMonster app to check what bands using.

VoWifi depends on the carrier and if that carrier also approved your phone of having one. Same situation when I had mine and AT&T.

It worked OK on Android 11 when I applied the fix here. So, the carrier is OK with it. It broke on Android 12 and hasn't been fixed on 13.

There's no native call record, always get bold characters, at wifi connection i get first a skinned surface, under that i get old surface, so finally i went back to 12, with fresh apps, settings i think, i get a brand new phone, all ok.
hows the battery life doing? i have my update wait for a while since i 've read some bad comments on the battery life. the OS itself looks like the colorOS.
Battery life is fine. Much the same as Android 12.

Thanks. i've already installed the android13 and i kinda like it the interface. maybe because some of the bugs from A12 are gone. for the battery life, its decent. still figuring out if its the screen that drains the battery.
