Facial recognition fails more often than works. - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

Title pretty much says it. I even added two different faces angles for recognition. I'd go as far as saying seldom does it work.
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know of any thing to do to improve it?

Try taking a scan with a mask on

Face unlock on phones with just camera is not safe.
Since you can use a pic of yourself to unlock the device, so never use face unlock unless the device uses more advanced technology to scan your face.

Are you doing a scan with the phone straight in front of your face and another with the phone held about chest height?

I've actually tried this on the N20U and can't get it to unlock with a picture.

Then you aren't doing it right. It's been proven with devices with just camera to unlock can be bypassed with picture of yourself.
Here is an example video of proof:

Here's one with s10 face unlock bypass.

Yes, I did the two scans.
I am not expecting it to work when using a mask.
Sounds like most folks are not having issues with it. I will try a new pair of scans

Taking a picture and holding it in front of the phone isn't difficult, I even got the vibration when it didn't recognize the face. Have you tried it?

No, but to how unbox therapy did he had to move picture forward and backwards at the phone until it recognised the picture and then unlocked the device.
So make sure pic you got isn't to dark and has well lit face and that camera can see picture well, otherwise it won't work.

I've probably spent about 20 minutes trying to unlock it taking several different pictures with 3 devices and at least 50 total attempts and I haven't gotten it to unlock once. It may be possible on these but it seems like it isn't going to be very easy. Try it and see what happens.

Facial rec wouldn't be of any concern if only the Smart Location worked consistently. It fails more often that it works.
I saw a suggestion on older devices to put the pin on the location map in 4 places around the home. But the current softward doesn't allow that. At least I couldn't get it to work.
Then there's finger print unlock. That's a big pain too.

This issue is really annoying. The suggestions to fix never work. i.e. taking new pics, or high/low light pics. I've tried everything to no avail. (OneUI 3.0 Android 11, N986B)

Well, I though that photos do not work to unlock the phone, I have an Iphone and face id there works just with my face, and it is always in attention mode. So if I do not look on the screen it doesn't work. Seems prety advanced to me.

On iPhones its different technology for face unlock. They use infrared or some face scanner technology. While Android phones with software facial unlock by using normal camera isn't as secure than what Face ID is on a iPhone or an Samsung galaxy s9/note9 has got.

Agree, but it shouldn't be SO terrible. It works pretty flawlessly on Huawei P30 Pro, but then can't make it too tricky to send private details to the PRC

[Q] Face Unlock: Yes or Nay ?

For those running ICS how do you like it? I think it's a "nice" feature, but IRL it's pretty useless. You have to hold your phone way to far from your face (and look pretty dumb), with the front facing camera not being centered it's pretty hard to get a clean angle and overall it's way too long to unlock your phone.
Gesture FTW
I agree its cool to play with but in day to day life it is kind of a pain in the butt

At least at the current state I think face unlock is nothing but a gimmick.
Taking pic at low light initially = 0/10 worked in low light / 2/10 worked in normal light
Taking pic at normal light conditions = 0/10 worked in low light / 6/10 worked in normal light
I just use it to brag about ICS to my friends. They get amazed by it.

I haven't flashed any of the ICS ROMs yet, but I've been using the app Visidon from the Market and it's very practical.

Security of face unlock is risible at the current state. Might as well have a simple PIN or no security at all. Until it can reliably tell a picture from your real face, then it's bull....!

Iris unlocking and sun glasses

Just noticed that my phone unlocks itself by scanning my irises even if I have my sun glasses on???
Maybe the scanner is too powerful I thought...so I covered one of the lenses with my hand...and tried unlocking it again...
And it did...it unlocked by scanning just one side of my face and with sun glasses on...
Maybe it is time to go back to the pin option.

Why? Matching just one iris is secure enough--and certainly more secure than a short PIN.
Yea just like the note 7 it works very well and fast

Face Unlock - Is it TOO permissive / Not secure enough?

I love how fast the Fast Unlock feature is... but I was curious as to how secure the facial recognition technology actually is.
I did a test today with my father and my brother-in-law try to see if they could unlock the OP6 with their faces. My father and I look relatively similar and my brother-in-law, while there is no blood relation, has similar facial features.
To my surprise, the Oneplus 6 unlocked for both of them! I removed my current face profile, set it again, and have them try a second time and the phone unlocked again.
I'm going to continue to experiment with this with other friends (one's who have similar features as well as those with distinctly different features) and see if I can continue to reproduce these results.
Community: Has anyone else experimented with this? If so, what was your result?
Interesting [emoji106] will watch the thread... The technology should be similar to the oneplus 5t so maybe there your will find some more info?

Was it not because you were near the phone and that it also saw your face when they tried to unlock it?
I never heard before that someone could have fooled the phone with face unlock.

Yes, it's not secure. My friend picked up my phone and it unlocked. ?
Just tried it and surprising yes, it seems other people can unlock mine with their face [emoji50]
that sounds strange.
Mod Edit
I tested it out on my daughter and she was able to unlock it with face unlock. It's not very secure.
If you're worried about security don't use biometrics.
Without dual cameras and 3d rendering face unlock is not secure
Hmm not secure indeed on op6. I tested and keep my hand on half off my face and it still unlocks. On my 5t it works way better? Disable face unlock till issue is solved, I thought that oneplus said that face recognition was improved on op6.
Regards ysco..
Yupp, I removed it.. When my father just took the handset to admire the outer body and it unlocked within 2 seconds when he pressed unlock button.. I tried it again and it unlocked again.. So I removed this bull**** from security..
I thought , one day I will find my dad reading my sex chat.. Prevention is better the cure.. I just removed it without saying a word.. ????

I think OnePlus's "fast" face unlock is much worse than stock. It just traces out the rough geometry

I thought OnePlus already mentioned that the face unlock is not secure.
I turned off Face Unlock because it was so fast I could never see my notifications. The fingerprint scanner works well enough for my taste.

Face unlock is not smart

I trained Face unlock while I use my reading glasses.
But when I am not wearing my reading glasses it never correctly notices me.
I trained it without reading glasses and not it does not know it is me when I have the reading glasses on.
Unless I am missing something face unlock is stupid, and I can not train it to unlock on my face when I am not wearing reading glasses and when I am ?
Mine recognizes me with and without my reading glasses. Never had an issue with that. Not on my 6t, 6 and 5t

Face unlock is also not that secure, as mike pointed out. I'd suggest avoiding it if you want to actually keep your device secure.

Ok here is the thing, "I know it is not 100% secure" .... so what ?
I lose the phone the first thing I do is remotely kill the device, then call my service provider report the device is missing.
If it takes awhile for me to notice and somebody fines it sure they can take a picture of me and unlock it ?
Oh look here is a OnePlus 6 .... let me get my camera and take a picture so I can open if up ..... Oh wait who do I take the picture of ?

There's also been reports of other people's faces opening up the device, so you might not even need a photo of the owners face.

Do your glasses cover your eyebrows?
I noticed the face unlock has no problem when I use my hand to cover half my face, but when I put my hand to cover my eyebrows, then it really doesn't recognize me.

Fingerprint sensor

I haven't seen any real review of the fingerprint sensor - only comments about the position on the screen.
Since there is no face or iris detection like on the Note 9, the fingerprint sensor will have to be pretty good.
Any ideas about this?
Edit: I just found one review that says there is face detection, which is a relief if it's true. I definitely saw one report that said there was only the fingerprint, so I'm now hoping that was wrong.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlMMXKKyfu4

Well i hope they have improved the under screen scanner from the S10 plus because it was garbage. I actually sold my s10 plus because it was so unreliable.
There is face unlock but if it works like the s10 plus it is not secure and can be spoofed with a picture of yourself. I didnt use that feature due to this on the S10 plus and since the fingerprint scanner was trash ended up using a pin/pattern.
I didnt spend $1500 on a 2019 device to use old unlock tech lim
Iike like that.
They should have brought back the retina scanner to secure the face unlock
About 11:30 in you'll see the fingerprint sensor test. Appears flawless according to Unbox Therapy. Most people who had issues with the S10 fingerprint sensor had those issues due to the screen protectors they were using, even though they blame the phone.

I was using the factory installed screen protector on my S10 plus and the scanner was still terribly unreliable.
And Lew was not unlocking from a black screen in that video either which made a big difference on my s10 plus.
If i hit the power button to view the lock screen then unlocked it was more reliable but from a locked black screen it was less than 50% reliable.

I still think it had something to do with the Samsung screen protectors too, even though they claimed they were designed for that purpose. I do not use a screen protector at all. If anything happens to my screen it costs me 29 bucks to get a new one so I generally don't have any sensitivity issues.

Ah, gotcha'. When I look at that, though, I also add in the $13 a month for a total cost of $341 over 2 years, including one screen replacement. Not saying it's a ripoff or anything. I have used my insurance and was glad to have it. I just like to look at the total cost.
Many thanks for the link to that review, it puts my mind at rest.
I don't use screen protectors because I always use use a folding case - never broken a screen yet.

Yes, I agree with you. I went from a nexus with it in the back as well, then the moto fingerprint reader at the base in the front to the back, and now it's going to the front again. I'm 80% sure I've disliked each transition but thelis iteration makes me the most nervous. The only thing I like about Apple is the Face ID as it's very quick. Though I don't like having my phone unlocked each time I pull it out. Plus, my work has strict security rules for keeping locked.

I could have a very short stay on the Note 10 plus if it is as bad....unfortunate since its an amazing device but being able to reliably and consistently unlock your device on the 1st attempt is a basic feature.

Yes, in order for me to have work email on my phone, corporate security policy requires using a pin with 7 numbers/letters and not just 4, or using a fingerprint reader, but no face unlock. Fun stuff.
