[Q] Face Unlock: Yes or Nay ? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For those running ICS how do you like it? I think it's a "nice" feature, but IRL it's pretty useless. You have to hold your phone way to far from your face (and look pretty dumb), with the front facing camera not being centered it's pretty hard to get a clean angle and overall it's way too long to unlock your phone.
Gesture FTW

I agree its cool to play with but in day to day life it is kind of a pain in the butt

At least at the current state I think face unlock is nothing but a gimmick.
Taking pic at low light initially = 0/10 worked in low light / 2/10 worked in normal light
Taking pic at normal light conditions = 0/10 worked in low light / 6/10 worked in normal light

I just use it to brag about ICS to my friends. They get amazed by it.

I haven't flashed any of the ICS ROMs yet, but I've been using the app Visidon from the Market and it's very practical.

Security of face unlock is risible at the current state. Might as well have a simple PIN or no security at all. Until it can reliably tell a picture from your real face, then it's bull....!

whats face unlock??

Speakerphone during phone call on facedown?

I had this feature with my TP2, and used it a lot.
Is there any mod of some sort I can install on my EVO 4G to allow the speakerphone to automatically activate when the phone is facedown?
I'm sure others would be interested in this as well.
Thanks!
yea there definitely is because it worked like that on the hero, someone will make it happen hopefully
I did not know that about the Hero!
Hopefully some awsome members here at xda could port that mod/app to the Evo sometime soon...
bump!
I'm curious to know if anyone else has heard anything about re-instating this feature on the EVO 4G!
Thanks
I would def use it

Me too why would they remove features out of sense?
i'm interested in this too, loved it on my tp2
it's 3am, in my bed, talking to someone (doesn't matter to who, that's not the point here). i flip to my side, incidentally making my phone's orientation matching the criteria - facing down, out the blue now i'm on speaker (!)... lol, not that i'd be doing this but this is one case where this "feature" would be more of a "bug"

I'd imagine you could code it not to look for a certain orientation, but to look for a rate of change of the Z axis that would indicate that it suddenly stopped face down on a surface. If it is coded like that, in your scenario you would only trigger it if you brought it off your face than slapped yourself with the phone. The impulse you get from a hard object is much different from a soft object and I imagine that for most people, they're talking about tables and counter tops here which are much harder than your face.

It would be based off of the proximity sensor.

+1 on this. Works just like the TP2 did
+2 so far works awesome, just like the TP2
Awesome! +3 Just what I wanted.
does anyone know if there is a way to hang up without turning the screen back on? Sometimes when driving and talking on the speakerphone its such a pain to wake the screen and then press end. Sometimes the other end hangs up and i end up pressing a button on the home screen instead. annoying not having a hard button for hanging up!

Face unlock in Atrix 2 ICS

Wao now face unlock in Atrix 2 ICS
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Yeah, I've been playing with FaceUnlock.... It's not bad, pretty quick response. I've managed to convince mine to allow unlock w/ my sunglasses on as well.
Just make sure you do that improve face recognition in a ton of different light situation and with and without said glasses on....
I have been playing with it on my SGS 3 for the last month now, and I can say at first it was a PIA, but with using the improve face recognition function a bunch of times in different light situtations and such it is much better, it was easy for me get it going on the A2 since I have it on the SGS 3 and knew what to do to make it work well.
Just my 2 pennies.
Wonders if there's a max number of times the improve can be used?
every time that faceunlock fails to recognize me I stop where I am and improve it.. now it is getting very good.
I have an Asus Transformer and the front camera is better.. the faceunlock works much better too...
Another tip: clean the front camera (use your clothes or fingers) to get a sharp image on face recognition!

(Q) Replacing one camera LED with IR

I haven't actually tested the IR levels with the back camera yet... do you guys think an IR LED would improve night vision? Replacing one LED might be pretty cool.

Are you talking like how Sony has the night shot to record in 0 lux ( pitch dark )?
If so when a Sony camcorder goes into night shot the shutter speeds get slowed down a bit to achieve NS, and for SNS ( super night shot ) the shutter is slowed even more. So it could work for still images if you could disable one led to use only the infrared led as the regular led would overpower the IR beam and make it useless. But that's my theory because I used to to tons of ghost hunts with NS cams

I liked how the original Sony camcorder with "night shot" had an interesting quirk. The IR could be activated in daylight, and by doing so when you took pics of people you would be able to, in effect, see through their clothing. It was a bit of a scandal at first, Sony recalled all the camcorders. But of course, many people didn't return them. Subsequent models had circuitry to prevent the IR from activating in daylight.
@Fuzi0719
Really? Never thought this one exists. Could there be a possibility someone else is still selling something like this on ebay? This is one of my hobbies. Collecting things which were released but was meant not to be or should I call it rare items.

I think that article was Sony-paid FUD. I owned one of those cameras and I can assure you it revealed far more detail than they claim in that article. The heat signature of your body is very visible through the clothing, with a lot of detail in some cases. Let's just say that I could tell if a guy was circumcised or not very easily.
Yea pretty much the Sony Nightshot! If you look on YouTube there's a video by a Do-it-yourselfer named Kipkay that threw together a hobby box filled with IR LEDs and did a video comparison, and his is much brighter/clearer.
I guess one LED won't do it then.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using xda app-developers app
This is our camera showing IR light from a TV remote... so that means their is no IR filter(????) I figure if I string up 5 LEDs in series, I might get something useful. Ill order a bunch and see what happens!
My ideal dream is to power a strip of LED's using USB OTG support. So I can plug straight in through MICROUSB.

love the phone, hate the camera

I cannot put this beautiful phone down. My desktop background pops so much that it looks like I printed a picture and glued it to my screen. It is amazingly fast and responsive.. I am a little worried about scratching the ceramic back. Sure, it might be stronger than aluminum, but is it more scratch resistant too?
My only big gripe is with the camera, I have about 11 more days until I can return this to BB, and if the camera software doesn't upgrade and make this as good as my previous Nexus 6P camera, I will sadly have to return it to BB. Why isn't HDR default? Why does the flash always default to "on", even after turning it off?
When will the green model launch? That thing is sexy as hell and might be easier to find in a dark room.. I have never owned a phone other than black or gray before. But that might be my first.

Try the Google Camera port for now and if you still don't like it return it
If I'm counting correctly the 27th will be 14 days since I got this phone from Sprint... which is judgement day for me. Decisions... Decisions..

The google camera port basically makes the camera a non-issue for me. I still use stock for the monochrome photos though but seriously, just use your flash for low light photos and problem solved

Facial recognition fails more often than works.

Title pretty much says it. I even added two different faces angles for recognition. I'd go as far as saying seldom does it work.
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know of any thing to do to improve it?
Try taking a scan with a mask on
Face unlock on phones with just camera is not safe.
Since you can use a pic of yourself to unlock the device, so never use face unlock unless the device uses more advanced technology to scan your face.

Are you doing a scan with the phone straight in front of your face and another with the phone held about chest height?

Then you aren't doing it right. It's been proven with devices with just camera to unlock can be bypassed with picture of yourself.
Here is an example video of proof:

Yes, I did the two scans.
I am not expecting it to work when using a mask.
Sounds like most folks are not having issues with it. I will try a new pair of scans

Taking a picture and holding it in front of the phone isn't difficult, I even got the vibration when it didn't recognize the face. Have you tried it?

No, but to how unbox therapy did he had to move picture forward and backwards at the phone until it recognised the picture and then unlocked the device.
So make sure pic you got isn't to dark and has well lit face and that camera can see picture well, otherwise it won't work.

I've probably spent about 20 minutes trying to unlock it taking several different pictures with 3 devices and at least 50 total attempts and I haven't gotten it to unlock once. It may be possible on these but it seems like it isn't going to be very easy. Try it and see what happens.
Facial rec wouldn't be of any concern if only the Smart Location worked consistently. It fails more often that it works.
I saw a suggestion on older devices to put the pin on the location map in 4 places around the home. But the current softward doesn't allow that. At least I couldn't get it to work.
Then there's finger print unlock. That's a big pain too.
This issue is really annoying. The suggestions to fix never work. i.e. taking new pics, or high/low light pics. I've tried everything to no avail. (OneUI 3.0 Android 11, N986B)

Well, I though that photos do not work to unlock the phone, I have an Iphone and face id there works just with my face, and it is always in attention mode. So if I do not look on the screen it doesn't work. Seems prety advanced to me.
p.s I don't know about samsung

On iPhones its different technology for face unlock. They use infrared or some face scanner technology. While Android phones with software facial unlock by using normal camera isn't as secure than what Face ID is on a iPhone or an Samsung galaxy s9/note9 has got.
Agree, but it shouldn't be SO terrible. It works pretty flawlessly on Huawei P30 Pro, but then can't make it too tricky to send private details to the PRC
