SM-N9860 improvements - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
I've got the brand new SM-N9860 (Note 20 Ultra 5G) that is TGY/TGY, TGY. This is Hongkong version of the firmware. It lacks two features I used to - native call recording and network speed indicator at the top. I've migrated to CHC (Open China) version and got both
Also CHC version looks much cleaner - you can uninstall all that China software and it has no Google software as sell (no Google Play etc.).
How to do it (no root required, Knox is intact etc., but phone will be factory reset):
1. You need to downgrade from lates TGY to July BRI (yes, BRI) version of the firmware (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nge-csc-sm-n9860-ds-n20u-5g-hongkong-t4163363)
2. After BRI is installed and up, download the latest CHC (I used Frija - https://github.com/SlackingVeteran/frija, use "CHC" for CSC field)
3. Using ODIN (3.14.4), write the firmware (here some tips - https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...to/ath3-official-stock-fw-updateodin-t4143909), use CSC_... for CSC (not HOME)
Now I have the call recording and network speed indicator out of the box
Tested some sensitive apps: Android Auto - works fine (checked with a car). Google Pay - works fine.

Wait a minute....
Are you suggesting to...
A) Move from Latest TGY ROM (in my case ATJ1) to July BRI firmware ATGM.... right?
B) Now when July BRI (Taiwanese) Firmware is Flashed and phone is running. You are suggesting to download latest CHC (Open China) firmware and flash ONLY CSC (OF CHINESE FIRMWARE CHC) and not the rest of 2 files AP & CP??
Does a CSC of other region work with AP Firmware of another region if the phone model remains same (SM-N9860)??
Will it unlock native call recording and other features?
Will it update in future as well?
If it updates then will the CSC be updated aswell? And it remains CHC or revert back to BRI?
Please guide us through.
I am asking this because I already did migrate to CHC firmware two weeks ago and I didn't had to goto July BRI. I was at August TGY firmware and I simply flashed the CHC firmware and got Native call recording and that network indicator too but then there was heaps of bloatware and all Firmware actually was for Chinese people with everything in chines, samsung member, no Netflix, no samsung pass, many thing in Chinese, country name of phone numbers in Chinese, difference in phone number formats and many more. It was so irritating so I switched back to TGY.
Please tell us of you have some different experience or work around. I need my phone to keep updating as well.

A - correct
B - no, you need to flash all the components (BL, AP etc.). I had "TGY/TGY, TGY", now I have "CHC/CHC, CHC/TGY"
You can't update CSC only (ODIN will show the error and will not proceed)
With CHC you have all the OTA features. I'm sure that after the update you'll keep CHC.
Actually, the only drawback of the CHC I've noticed to date - "Yellow pages" tab and country name in the Phone app (but I prefer True Phone, so it doesn't matter). All the bloatware can be uninstalled (moreother - TGY installs Google apps, that I don't use like Photo etc.), keyboard should be switched to Swiftkey or Samsung. I've downloaded Netflix apk (from 4pda) and it works well. I see no single reason to switch back to TGY or BRI.
The only item to be checked left is Android Auto in a car (it could be a stumbling block).
If you like TGY, you can try the following trick - write CHC (it has OZL CSC - N9860OZL1ATI3), after that use SamKEY to change CSC to TGY (it should work with OZL, and doesn't work with OZS), after that use ODIN to write TGY (except CSC), and after that - revert back CSC from TGY to CHC using SamKEY. I haven't tried it, just an idea.

Thanks for the detail, my only and only requirement is native call recording. I am brewing with ACR with poor quality recordings, otherwise I love TGY

I'm sure it has been mentioned time and time again that the Snapdragon models of the N20U doesn't have esim activated by default. Only Samsung can activate it. They did not do it on the S20 Snapdragon series and I don't think they will on the N20.

I searched on numerous thread, but didnt find any information in regards to HK version, and i do need info for this specific model.
////////
All Galaxy S20 phones (S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra) have the required hardware built-in.
But in a few regions, and in a few carrier models, the eSIM support was disabled. For this reason, we did not include eSIM support as a top 5 new features of Galaxy S20.
So, Galaxy S20 is eSIM-capable. But it may be disabled in the firmware by a few distributors or carriers."
///// read more on https://gadgetguideonline.com/s20/esim-support-use-esim-on-galaxy-s20/
Based on this information i was trying to VERIFY does N20 with BRI or CHI have esim support !!!!
The Note 20 Ultra uses NXP's conbined chipset which includes...embedded...UWB, NFC, SIM and eSIM. And the drivers for eSIM are installed in the phones. Samsung has software deactivated the eSIM...

BRI, TGY, CHC do not support Esim as none of the snapdragon versions has esim activated, thanks to Samsung.

Confirming - no eSim support on TGY, BRI (October update) and CHC (September update)

Just to add,the HK models are dual physical sim not eSim. Folks chasing something that doesn't exist lol.

Hello to everyone,
I have followed Andriy_ 's procedure and now I am experimenting the good and the bad of CHC ROM. The only very annoying problems I am getting are with Google Maps continuously crashing after getting the right GPS position, Google Pay not working at the end of the certification of a credit card and one of my 3 bank's accounts apps saying that it is not compatible with my phone (Safety Net Check fails ("Basic integrity" and "CTS Profile Match")). Everything was obviously working like a charm with original (Hong Kong) rom. I think that there is no solution, maybe Google does not certify chinese ROMs....Any help?
Regards
Franco

You don't need to do step 1. You can flash directly to a CHC room. That's what I did before.

Yes, because this specific room is not google certified, a requirement to use secured google services. This is one of the reasons that made me go back to TGY/BRI. Also it doesn't have the Samsung Pass and you can't get rid of the Chinese yellowpage service in the phone app (unless you use 3rd party phone app as the default).

I have no issues with Google Maps and Google Pay works fine on CHC... Have you installed Play market?

Yes, downloaded from a well known and reliable APK repository (Google Play Store, Play Services and Framework)

I've installed Play market only. Maybe this is the difference?

CSC Changing Help

I have the G955FD on the BRI (Taiwan) firmware. I live in Australia, and really want to use Samsung pay. How should I change my CSC from BRI to XSA? I've seen varying information here and on other sites. I want to keep my Google Play as Certified, still have OTAs and without tripping KNOX. Essentially like a standard phone from this region. I don't particularly care about Dual-SIM, but it'd be nice to still have.
Here is my current software information: imgur(dot)com/a/197z5 <-- I can't post links yet, remove this if not allowed.
Thanks for helping

Hi mate
Without root there are not many options ..
First F and FD firmwares are compatibles ( same device!! exynos to exynos) , you can flash an F firmware into an FD or vice versa
you could try to change your CSC to your SIM card CSC first
Check here
On the thread it shows how to add your SIM CSC to your current CSC config , if it work you may end up with a configuration like BRI/BRI/XSA , in my case I got TPA/TPA/PCW , TPA was the software default and PCW sims CSC. I do not have Samsung pay so i do not know if that change will be enough to make it work. Back up you need to factory reset for this.
The other option is to flash a full XSA firmware ( use a G955F firmware) , read here how to do it
BACK UP before you do anything

Thank you very much! I'm now running XSA/XSA/XSA with a flash. Dual-SIM support is still there which surprised me. There were some issues with Odin, but I fixed them up after a while.

Great news mate!!
Firmware is 100% same for F and FD so you should not see any difference at all , I asume also you got Samsung Pay working.
Good job!
I did the same when I had s8+. flashed TEL (Telstra) SM-G955F firmware which I got off Sammobile and worked like a treat. Samsung pay, VoLTE, Wifi Calling, Spam detection in calls worked as well.
I upgraded to S9+ and tried to do the same. The flash process works fine but CSC doesn't change. I am stuck on AFG CSC. Apparently it cant be done on S9 as Samsung is imposing multi CSC format.
Well, you are lucky one to have S8+. Enjoy

That's unfortunate
I'm curious why you flashed TEL instead of XSA, XSA is the unlocked version and it still has WiFi calling, VoLTE etc. I have an ALDImobile SIM (which uses Telstra) but I installed the unlocked version to have minimal bloatware and the stock boot logo.

I tried both. First preference is always XSA but I tried TEL in anticipation that it may work

Is it possible to flash China SM-N9700 (CHC) with Hong Kong (TGY) / Taiwan (BRI) ROM?

One relative bought me a Samsung Note 10 from China. It's a very beautiful phone. However, it doesn't have Google Play Store, worst of all, the default search engine and location service is Baidu.
It seems the Chinese version of Note 10 has same Model number and specs to the ones for Hong Kong and Taiwan, so I tried flash the TGY and BRI firmware with Odin, but both failed when flashing "system.img.ext". Thanks for goodness, I was able to revive the phone with Odin by flashing it back with CHC chinese firmware.
Did I missed some important steps? Or is it possible to flash China SM-N9700 (CHC) with Hong Kong (TGY) / Taiwan (BRI) ROM?
Any advise is appreciated!
Thanks
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaahoooo!
Figured it our myself. It worked !!!!
The Chinese version of Samsung SM-N9700 is actually identical to Hong Kong / Taiwan version.
Here are the tips to rebrand it to Taiwan or Hong Kong version.
1. Download the official firmware of N9700 for Taiwan or Hong Kong (must be higher or same version of your device)
2. Boot into download mode
3. Use Odin to refresh, there are two CSC files in the firmware package, make sure to use the CSC_* file, DO NOT use the HOME_CSC* file it will cause failure on system.img.ext4 flash. Using the simple CSC_ file will wipe everything off your phone and put the phone back to the true factory state, make sure you backup your stuff if you want to keep anything on the device.
4. Enjoy the beautiful Note 10 with Google Play Store installed ))
!!! Warning, do not flash if you don't understand what I am talking about above!!!
Do you know if it's possible to install Android 10 beta on it ? Thanks
I have a n9700 HK me too

I don't think there is Android 10 BETA for N9700 model yet.
Personally I have no interest to test the BETA even if it become available.

Guess that your Chinese version is equipped with 5G. How does the change in firmware affect this? Is 5G still available after flashing?

No idea, there won't be 5G coverage in my city for at least a couple of years, by that time, the Note 10 will be definitely retired.

Question A525F (4G) native call recording

Hi,
I have A52 4G (A525F) with OLM (XME) firmware and would like to enable native call recording.
From reading Samsung forums I understand that ILO (Israel), THL (Thailand) and XID (Indonesia) CSC would allow native call recording.
The problem is that unlike for S20 etc, for A52 none of those CSC is included in OXM firmware, ILO is OJM and others are OLM, so it looks if I flash OXM firmware for A52 I would get nothing.
I don't care to pay for some credits with samkey, but the question is if samkey can set ILO CSC for OJM, not OXM firmware and if this would give me native call recording?
Or the only way available is to unlock the boot loader and root A52?
Really appreciate your help!
Thanks much.

If your bootloader is unlocked, you can flash another region's/country's firmware (with Odin). But changing to another CSC will force you to do a factory reset/wipe data.
Are you sure about native call recording for those CSC firmware versions?
I am on DBT (unlocked/unbranded German), and this does not have call recording.
On my previous Samsung phones (S9, S9 Plus, A50 and A51) I got a built-in Call Recording without any problems so I switched CSC to XXV. It was enough to flash Home CSC from Vietnam, and there was no need to reset to factory settings.
On my new A52, which had all the EUX CSC tags, that way doesn’t work.
I tried to flash only part of the XXV and THL firmware, and then the whole firmware and I couldn't get the built-in Call Recording.
I think the problem is that I download the XXV (Vietnam) or THL (Thailand) firmware, and after flashing it says: XME.
This should be addressed, so a way would be found to get a built-in Call Recorder.
EDIT:
I finally managed to get a built-in Call Recording. I flashed the INS (India) firmware, with Home CSC, so I didn't lose any data. All together it lasted 5 minutes and now Call Recording is working ...
My original CSC was EUX,EUX,EUX,EUX, now is: INS,INS,INS, EUX

My original CSC was EUX,EUX,EUX,EUX, now is: INS,INS,INS, EUX

Please explain a bit. Do you mean that you flashed :-
1) download and flashed INS firmware with INS CSC
OR
2) download INS firmware and EUX firmware then flashed INS firmware with EUX CSC
i'm sure many still wondering how to do this
thanks in advance

I flashed the complete latest INS firmware via Odin. I put HOME CSC, so as not to lose all my data and applications.
The flashing ended in a few minutes, the cell phone restarted and everything was as before ... it offered me several apps from India, but I refused. If not, they can be uninstalled later.
I live in Europe, I have Croatian SIM card... no problem.
Updates come to me normally and regularly, there have been 2 since the flash.
In the Phone application, in Settings, you can select Call recording
I just noticed that the XFE firmware also doesn't have call recording. My previous phone had it with the EGY firmware. Strange, why wouldn't it just be enabled by default?

Could you please and please take me through the steps in activating the native call recording on my Samsung A32 without losing my files. I'm disappointed Samsung didn't make this common feature available on their latest phones. Please help me.
Sorry, my English is bad for detailed instructions...
Is it possible to flash Home CSC alone in Odin?
Yes.
I now have all EUX and only Home CSC India (IND).
Everything works, I have a Call Recorder and I haven't lost any data when flashing.
You just have to use Home CSC from the same month as everything else (BL, AP, CP) is.

Ah, so BL, AP & CP must be flashed along with Home CSC then
I'm not sure. It's probably enough to flash only Home Csc, but I haven't tried ... I flashed only home CSC on Galaxy S9 and Galaxy A50 and it worked
Can anyone with the call recording option enabled confirm the value of the following by running adb shell settings get system on computer (or other device)? These are the values I got on my device (call recording option not available in call settings) from adb shell settings list system:
Code:
record_call_storage_setting_value=0
record_calls_automatically_on_off=0
record_calls_automatically_type=0
record_calls_notification_on_off=1
for eg, to get the values for the first one, type adb shell settings get system record_call_storage_setting_value (after enabling USB debugging and connecting device to adb of course). Or conversely, do adb shell settings list system to get all the values (can also rerun replacing system with secure then global to get other values).

So I tried it and can confirm that simply flashing the Home CSC file alone in Odin for a different region but the same software version installed on the device changes the CSC (as expected), no data loss and I was able to get call recording option too. Flashed INS Home CSC over XME for the record. Just a couple notifications on restart asking to install new apps.
The only issue with the Indian firmware is that it might come with a bit more bloatware than other country's firmware. Don't know for sure though.

As far as I know only Xiaomi with special ROM supports vowifi recording. This is why I abandonded samsung and went to Xiaomi .
At my Xiaomi with https://xiaomi.eu/community/ ROM it works.
Sorry Samsung you don't listen to your customers for years...

Question How change from Firmware SM-S9080 to SM-S908E

Hey Guys,
I recently bought an China Version SM-S9080 but I need to install some apps but I can't because some region incompability, I tried to flash the SM-S908E version but have no luck,
Any Idea what or how can I flash it, or any other option?
Thanks!
I'm having a similiat problem, see this thread: Link, so far with no success for switching from 9080 to 908E.
However, if you problem is just about some Apps, then it might be enough to switch the CSC on the 9080, here is an explanation on how to flash a new firmware.
The reasn why youo need a new firmware is, that for the 9080 there are different Firwmares for each CSC. You can find those firmwares over here: Link
E.g., if you are currently running the China versions with CSC "CHC" then you can easily install the firmware with "BRI" (Taiwan) or "TRY" (Hong Kong) CSC.
Those two later version e.g. have all the Google apps and you also have access to Google Playstore, so you can install other Apps that are blocked in China.
However, if you *are* already in China then please be aware that you need to have a VPN connection to make use of all these options.

It is not possible to change CSC without tripping Knox. You must unlock the bootloader to change the CSC.

Unlock the bootloader and use Odin to flash OXM firmware. OXM is multi-CSC, so you should be able to change region to India.
Don't forget you can use the Search function to look for solutions to questions that have been asked many, many times before.

If you unlock your bootloader, you can install any CSC you want, so you'd just download INS firmware and flash it using Odin.
Or, you can flash the OXM firmware and simply change the region to India, as I stated in my first reply.
Ok i got that now second major issue is that i cannot unlock my bootloader as my developers option is not showing oem unlocking
no need to unlock your bootloader to change the CSC, just use this application to do so

Can you suggest best US based csc with regular ota updates as i am not getting ota update on gcf....stuck on may security patch update....
Can GCF based devices get ota updates i read it in someone's post that they can be only updated via odin or sideloading
GCF gives more LTE and 5G bands support so maybe that's why your phone has it set on that. You can change it to XAA as it's bloatware free and gets regular updates.

Wanted to ask it just out of curiosity....there is no way to change my csc from USA version to Indain version....by any means?
I don't think this is possible... and that's why Samsung has different variants for different countries ...
Okkk....
But by any chance u get to know that it can be changed to Indian csc please do let me know it will be very helpful
Thinking of flashing this firmware update via odin....device model number : SM-S908UZKEVZW
Region:VZW
OP, Are you sure it is an "unlocked" version? Based on he last three charactors of the model# you provided says it is a Verizon branded phone. Yes, technically it was unlocked after 60 days, but since you are not connected to Verizon's network, that may be the reason you are not getting OTA updates.

Discover the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 256GB (Verizon) in Phantom Black (SM-S908UZKEVZW), the phone that lets you work and collaborate on the go in ways you never thought possible.

As for unlocking the bootloader, none of the US variants' bootloaders are unlockable.
I changed my csc code from GCF to USC and now in sim card manager settings it is showing only sim1 option and esim no sim2 option is available
