Verizon 5G and Pixel 5 - Google Pixel 5 Guides, News, & Discussion

So Apple announced their iPhone 12 yesterday and the very same day Verizon announces a wide (r) rollout of its fast 5G. Why is it that Apple rules the roost when it comes to mobile technology and that basically what they say goes? Yes, this is a rant. The same thing happened with eSim. Apple introduces it in January of last year (2019) and Verizon implements it immediately. It took a year for the Pixel 3a to finally enable eSim on Verizon. Why can't Google dictate hardware mobile technology like Apple can? That could be a stupid question but it still irks me. Lastly, on the VZW website huge promotions and ads for the iPhone 12 and nary a mention of the P5 with identical capabilities. /rant

Well Apple sells more iPhone on launch week than all the Pixel phone Google sells all year. So not surprising.
Also Apple have around 50% share of smartphone users in the US.
I think this year, both apple and android users are paying extra for 5G that have very little benefits.
That Apple keynote sounds like Version paid advertising.

Two words: Market Share

VZ mmw 5g is garbage and will likely be abandoned like fios. This LTE 5g sounds promising.

Not to make this an iPhone thread but does anyone know if DSDS will disable 5G as it does on the P5?

Top US Provider? (Please Rate)

Hey community,
I am currently not under contract with any provider…at the very least I want to give each provider a solid look before signing a new contract. Since I value the input of this community so much I am interested to see your thoughts. I don’t need help choosing a phone…also I am in the USA so for the purpose of this thread I am not interested in how the services would be rated worldwide.
Please add a vote to the poll…please don’t just pick the provider you are currently with but rather who you would choose if you had the chance…if anyone has relevant info please post it. My needs are simple…data and voice…coverage and customer service are very important. Let’s not turn this into a forum to bash providers…that is not my interest…if you have a chip on your shoulder please express it elsewhere…
I have added the top national carriers to the poll.
Thanks!
Well this thread was a BUST
You went with T-Mobile i'm guessing? Lol, I think you were right.
Oh hey, you posted that on December 11th, 1:43 and you reposted today on June 8th 7:43...
T-Mobile is extremely good if you live in a metro area...best call quality, good coverage, no dropped calls, fast data speeds (4-5mbps+ in some places)
At&T as it´s the only carrier that have HTC devices which work with 3G in México!
Tmobile has the best phones imho
Verizon tends to have the best signal
and AT&T is just a general all rounder
I currently have AT&T and aside from their pitiful phone selection and ludicrous data plan, i usually have good service

Funny...I actually have not updated my phone yet...kinda want HD2 but kinda want an Android phone too...I am draging my feet.
metro now owned by T-mobile
I went out today during my day off and seen what was out there to offer. Shopping for a family plan with at least 3 lines, I have a buddy and his wife where I stay maybe 1 week a month who haven't had phones and need them (have kids etc). I couldn't find even close to a better deal than what Metro T-mobile offered me in the store. First I'd like to say that going into a cell store is most generally pointless, because you will get a better deal 90% of the time going online to shop phone plans. However this was certainly an exception.
I was coming from Boost, and wanting to port my number over. Porting over from another company will usually get you a slightly better deal. They have a current (4 for 100) promotion at the metro/t-mobile dealer. That seemed to be a decent price for a family plan. We all have fairly new, decent phones already that can be carrier unlocked fairly easily. So I asked if I would need to purchase SIM cards which seems to be the norm, I was figuring 100 for the plan, then probably 25 a piece for activation/sim cards etc... Then i was kinda shocked.
She then said since I'm porting over from another carrier that I'll get a new phone (up to 240.00usd) for myself, AND each additional line. There will be a 15 dollar activation fee for each line.
So I'll be at around 180.00 out the door. That includes: unlimited talk, text, and unlimited data with no throttling. And the phones I have to choose from don't suck. I'm still deciding between.
LG Stylo 4 (we already have 3 in the house, they are decent midrange phones)
LG Stylo 5 (another gig of ram, slightly better glass, and android 9)
Samsung a10e
Samsung a20
Moto g7 power
Granted, all of metro's phones seem to have a ton of bloatware on em... but i can't pass this deal up because the best part is: NO CONTRACT
I'm probably going to be selling 3 stylo 4's on swappa

Apple and Google have the power to change the industry

The phone carrier pricing and phone selection in the U.S. is screwed up in my opinion. If you want the iPhone your stuck with ATT for now. If you want an Android, where do you even begin to look, so many options it is overwhelming for the non tech geek newb.
In my perfect world this would be great to see. Follow the plan that Google first announced with Nexus-One, but never happened, release the same identical phone on all 4 major U.S. carriers, only difference being the radios to allow them to work on each carrier. Then us, the consumer wins, we just choose the best carrier for the best price, and network in your town. Then there would be some major competition on monthly plans. None of this insane $100+ per month for a single smart phone unlimited. That is just insane, and Europe and Asia don't pay anywhere near that kind of pricing.
And I would like to see it done this way.
Every Christmas time, Google comes out with their hot new Nexus brand phone, will be the latest and "pure" OS, untouched by carrier bloatware. And release it for all 4 major carriers at the same time, and would be the exact same phone for everyone. Then the consumer chooses who they want to have for their service. Then in the Summer, Apple comes out with their hot new iPhone, with the best hardware for the time. And release that new iPhone across all 4 major carriers too, being the exact same phone, and again the consumer just decides who they want purchase service from.
Seemed like Google was so close to doing that last year with the Nexus-One...they did release it on T-Mobile first, then an ATT 3G version, and Verizon + Sprint were in a holding pattern, and pulled the plug. I bet the carriers did not like this idea, they knew what would happen eventually = major competition for the same phone, would have to lower their plan pricing, and they said NO !!!
Google doesn't set the prices. Plus why have the Nexus One on all carriers?
Verzion got the Incredible.
Sprint got the Evo
AT&T kind of sucks, but has Iphone.
Only way you can get the Nexus One was an online store.
Plus not like it matters too much anways. There are better ways to get the Nexus S, there are different devices out there that are plenty fast.

Sprint decides to invest all it has in the next four years - on iPhones

http://www.seednonym.com/2011/10/sprint-nextel-bets-its-future-on-yet-to.html
Risky business? You bet.
How is that risky? That's the best business move they've made in some time. The last moderately revolutionary device sprint had was the evo 4g and that's been awhile. They even got the overall worst of the wp7 devices. Sprint has become a joke and this really is their best shot at redemption. Honestly, of the big 4 I see the survivors being the ones that offer iPhones. As much as I hate it, T-mobile has become a joke which sucks with their awesome hardware and rate plans but they don't have the iPhone and being the smallest of the big 4, likely won't get it unless apple makes a last ditch effort at market share and that's only if t-mobile accepts it. T-mobile has always been the most 'indie' of the providers so I wouldn't put it past them to reject such a proposal. At this point, what I want to see is t-mobile behind wp7 and the other three backing iOS, everyone sells android, but there's no specific primary carrier for it because it's so loose you could have it running on a toaster. Att would still likely be getting as good, if not better windows phones as well, and lets face it, if you're using sprint or Verizon you dont swap out phones that often and i think that's left to the less nerdy who make more sense on ios. Eventually, ATT realizes they're offering nothing special and likely aren't getting all the great cuts the larger carrier (Verizon) is so they move to wp7 as a primary market which at this point will be wp8 or so and with the integration with home PCs coming in windows 8/windows phone creates an almost new market. IOS is tossed aside because they can only offer such things to a meager percent of the population who want to pay 3 times as much for the same hardware. Android and windows phone become the big competitors, and while android retains customization, WP has flawless integration which will be poorly copied with android apps but never duplicated. From there, it will be a matter of choice.
That's how I see the whole thing going anyway
Haha, thanks for the information! I don't live in the US so I don't that much information you see.
No.
No way Apple would sell out to that, because that would just make them lose profit.
Right now, all the iPhone users are on AT&T and Verizon, and lots of people are waiting for the new phone to upgrade, and do NOT want to switch carriers, so why would they risk losing sales just so Sprint can have the iPhone 5 exclusive for a few months? Not going to happened.
Sprint would be willing to do it, Apple, not so much. They don't need to be exclusive to one carrier, because every single carrier in the world wants the iPhone. AT&T got the exclusive 4 year contract because it was a new phone, iPhone is known by everyone now, Apple won't sell out.

Perhaps Apple would agree due to the fact that Sprint offered an agreement of purchase regardless of sale statistics? I'm not sure.

Samsung to launch faster Galaxy S4 smartphone

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/06/17/us-samsung-shin-idUKBRE95G05I20130617
Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co plans to sell a variation of its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone that will transmit data at nearly twice the normal speed, the head of its mobile business said on Monday.
J.K. Shin, also co-chief executive of the world's biggest technology firm by revenue, said the phone would be sold in South Korea as early as this month.
Samsung was in talks with several overseas carriers to take the phone, Shin told Reuters in an interview at Samsung's headquarters in Suwon, just south of Seoul. He declined to name the carriers.
"We'll be the first with the commercial launch of the advanced 4G version of the smartphone," Shin said.
The new S4 will use LTE-Advanced 4G technology, an upgrade from conventional 4G called LTE, or long term evolution. LTE-Advanced offers data transmission at up to twice the normal 4G speed. The phones will be powered by Qualcomm chips.
A movie download that takes 3 minutes with conventional 4G would take slightly more than 1 minute, Samsung said.
Samsung's shares have lost almost $20 billion since June 7 after analysts cut forecasts for Galaxy S4 sales by as much as 30 percent on industry data that showed the high-end smartphone market was getting saturated.
The same problem is hitting sales of the iPhone 5, made by Samsung rival Apple Inc.
Samsung's market capitalization is still a hefty $195 billion. Its shares closed down 0.2 percent on Monday.
Shin showed little concern about sales prospects for the S4, which hit stores in late April. The mobile devices division is the company's biggest profit generator.
"S4 sales remain strong. It's selling far stronger than the (Galaxy) S III ... and the new LTE-Advanced (4G) phone will be another addition to our high-end segment offerings that ensure healthy profit margins," Shin said.
Shin declined to provide forecasts for S4 sales. He said the new S4 would be slightly more expensive than the current one.
The South Korean firm hopes the addition of hardware offerings such as faster data transmission, along with its widely anticipated move to introduce models with unbreakable or flexible displays, will help it protect margin growth.
"As operators seek to provide more data-centric mobile services, I think this will become mainstream 4G technology globally in the coming years," Shin said.
Shin also said sales of Samsung's tablet products in the U.S. market jumped 3.3 times since it installed brand shops within Best Buy's stores in April, and is now considering expanding the format in Latin America and Britain. Samsung declined to name potential retailers.
EYES ON NETWORK BUSINESS
Having conquered the smartphone market that Apple virtually created with the iconic iPhone in 2007, Samsung is seeking to do the same in the network business with the booming 4G mobile equipment market, challenging bigger rivals such as Ericsson, China's Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks.
Many countries need to upgrade mobile base stations to handle not just 3G but also 4G, or build them from scratch to support 4G connections.
Shin said the network gear market was one of Samsung's fastest growing businesses, mainly thanks to 4G equipment sales which had been rising more than 30 percent a year since 2010.
The new phone would help this part of Samsung's business, he said.
"Such technology leadership will set the pace for the competition and help us become a major player in the network gear market," Shin said.
Samsung has won some 4G network deals from all major South Korean carriers, U.S. Sprint Nextel Corp and Japan's KDDI Corp and Hutchison Whampoa's British unit, but it needs to crack China to close the gap with traditional vendors in the overall gear equipment market.
Shin said there had not been much progress in Samsung's push to penetrate China's 4G equipment market yet, but it was increasing investment in the country.
China's three mobile operators - China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom - plan to spend a combined 345 billion yuan ($56.3 billion) this year on network upgrades. That includes investment in 4G, which multiplies mobile broadband speeds by up to five times for users of iPhone and Galaxy phones compared with 3G.
Many analysts believe Huawei and ZTE Corp - already big suppliers of China Mobile since only 10-15 percent of 3G network contracts went to foreign vendors - will be winners, leaving others to fight for smaller bits of the pie.
Samsung hopes to show Chinese clients that 4G networks with new technology can be built faster and with lower operating costs.

That's all great, but I have two concerns:
1. LTE (at least over here) goes up to 75 Mbit/s - why would anyone need more?
2. LTE options are not that expensive these days, but are capped at ridiculous limits (2 GB) - so I don't get the point. Okay, it's an investment for the future, but for now... no.
So what?
Gaming is the only thing where this extra power will be noticeable. But companies want to sell as many games as possible. So they will start supporting these extra functions when a lot of phones are shipped with them.
On the PC for example it usually takes years, until a new version of DirectX or OpenGL are actually used in games.

Samsung are really over doing the Galaxy S range to the point where soon it will mean nothing because of brand dilution.
I'm pretty happy getting over 53mb on Telstra LTE and anything more is just overkill.
I'll pass on this phone.

Why would it be unfair? The current version does not support LTE Advance, so in the only market so far that does (Korea), they are releasing a new one. It's like releasing an LTE Nexus 4 after the regular one, there's nothing unfair about it.
Now if specs will change from Exynos 5 Octo to SD800, blame the Exynos team that so messed up the 5410 chipset that they are stopping manufacturing it, so the LTE Advance gets the next best SoC. Again, nothing unfair, just the reality.
As per sammobile........ "The new galaxy s4 will support LTE-advanced and will be powered by qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 CPU that will make the already fast Galaxy S4, faster with up to twice the normal 4g speed and higher clock speed".
Samsungg has done it again just like the i9305. Dammit.... I wish this was the one that was released instead of the s600 if they really wanted to be king thats what they should of done from day Because no one yet had the s800 .. arghhhh...
But so far i think its only being released in there home country not sure about the rest if the world.

Well the UK won't get it that for sure, we only have one network atm that 4G & that still patchy.
Maybe 2015 we see the the S6 with advance 4G as standard, but there still no saying we have any network by then that support it, were pretty slow on the uptake in the UK.

The article is about network speed, not CPU power. Current LTE speeds provide WAY more bandwidth than is needed for even the most demanding online games.

My point still stands.
There is always newer and faster technologie as time goes on. Until they become mainstream it takes a while.
Last year they already sold SGS3 with LTE, but where I live, there is still no LTE in sight.

Yes, but you see, a car with 800 hp can't do anything more or better than a car with 600 hp. Except be marginally faster.
With a 100 hp car, however... that margin becomes great as the Great Wall of China.
The only thing this new S4 is is an investment into the future. It certainly won't make the I9500/I9505 obsolete or archaic.
I think that the 4g network will be able to handle this advance 4g im guessing here but I really dont think they have to change all that much with the towers again I think 4g advance is something like 3g to 3g +..... it wont be much to have to turn it on with current 4g (assuming)... my main point is the s800 was ready month or 2 before the s4 was released they should of just used the best of the best from the start then by the time s5 comes something better will be out

No 5G for T-Mobile AT&T or Sprint do I wait?

So spending a thousand plus on a phone that won't take advantage of the network doesn't seem like a good decision to me. Even the Verizon version with 5G is first generation. The Qualcomm chip x55 is due out in the next few months. The question is do I jump the gun and and get a phone that is at launch behind the times. I read an interview where the CEO of T-Mobile said they are waiting for a version with the x55 chip which will make it more compatible with their Network and give a better experience to the end user.
I'm leaning towards waiting instead of jumping the gun. I think Samsung should have waited to truly make the phone second to none.
I know I'm going to be pissed when no 5G version comes out for T-Mobile. I'm not willing to jump to Verizon to be on a first-generation network that is already out outdated

I upgrade every year, but I never pay full price. I sold a couple phones to pay for my 512GB Note 9, which I bought used. Well. It was used. But the guy just received it as an insurance claim, so it had actually never been used. I took all the factrou plastic off of it. But I only paid $700 for it in November of last year.
Here's how I'm getting the Note 10+ for basically free:
Sold my 512GB Note 9 for $585.
Bought a 128GB Note 9 for $400.
So I had a 128GB Note 9 plus $185 in my pocket.
Traded THAT Note 9 in on a Note 10+ and Samsung gave me $600 for it. (that's a $200 profit).
Samsung also gave me a $200 Samsung Gift card for reserving and preordering.
I signed up for a credit card that gives me $200 cash back, which I can apply to my cc bill, if I spend $1,000 in the first three months. I put the Note 10+ and some motorcycle parts on it that I wanted anyway, and have already spent $1,000. Cash back is on its way.
So I'll break it down:
Aura Glow Note 10+ $1,100
Sales Tax ~ $31
Trade in 128GB Note 9 -$600
Note 10+ purchase price $531
Cash from 512 N9 sale -$185
Cash back from CC -$200
Total cost of Note 10+ $146
So I have invested $146 in a new phone. But in September, I'll use my $200 Samsung gift card to buy the new Gear Active 2. It starts at $200, so it will basically be free. I don't need it, so I will sell it for maybe $175.
Note 10+ $146
Sell watch -$175
PROFIT $29
I am waiting for the note 10+ 5g to come out. I was disappointed again that verizon got the exclusive for it but i do wonder if its the x50 or x55. There are no specific specs that confirm it. Or maybe i just didnt look too closely.
Like you said, maybe the other carriers were trying to get x55 modem instead.
I will be really disappointed if the later note 5g doesnt come with x55 and it is the same x50.
At this moment, i highly doubt that they will put the x55. I am hoping that they will do though. I really want to use my 2 yr contract upgrade when the time comes.
For $1200 I'm waiting, either for a 5G model or if my current Note 8 breaks, I'll break down and buy the 4G version.

Oh I've read many articles saying that the Verizon version is using the older x 50. Verizon's business model is to show market dominance but I'm assuming and I feel they jumped the gun cuz I read they had all kinds of issues with their 5G service. The x55 will support multiple bands and multiple protocols. When T-Mobile and Sprint merge they're going to have three bands of 5G service. Apparently the higher the frequency the more obstructions will affect the signal strength another words buildings Etc. TMobile has a 600 megahertz band and Sprint has a 2.4 and I believe they both have a band which is similar to Verizon.
Verizon's just flexing their muscle trying to show market dominance. And it will probably work judging by the number of people that are pre-ordering. There's no exclusivity TMobile AT&T and Sprint just decided to wait for a better chip.

Verizon's just flexing their muscle trying to show market dominance. And it will probably work judging by the number of people that are pre-ordering. There's no exclusivity TMobile AT&T and Sprint just decided to wait for a better chip.

Samsung has already confirmed that the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G will come to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint once its temporary exclusivity period with Verizon ends. All three carriers sell the Galaxy S10 5G.

Yea i believe that.
Verizon had always that mentality that they are comfortable in their position and their customers would care less.
In the 5g service, they didnt take in account of real world physics.
They will be in trouble once tmobile and sprint merges. Their combined spectrum and technology is def much better.
My theory on merging complications is that att and verizon are trying to stop it behind the lines.

Oh I am sure they're coming out with the 5G model the question is will it be the second generation chip which is the Qualcomm x 55 not the x 50.

From tech republic:
Likewise, CNET reports that the*Galaxy Note 10+ 5G for AT&T and T-Mobile will use the second-generation Qualcomm X55 modem. The newer modem is anticipated to address power consumption and heat dissipation issues, though those models "will only be able to access their sub-6Ghz networks, not their millimeter wave service." Sub-6 GHz frequencies will not be able to deliver the headline-making speeds,*though will deliver more consistent coverage.

I'm not certain. I won't buy a 5G phone this year regardless of the chip. I was more referencing the statement that Verizon doesn't have exclusivity. Samsung claims they do. I opted for the Note 10+. I'd rather not have spotty 5G switching on and off destroying my battery. I will wait until it matures a bit.

I agree with you 100% I might even wait for the note 11 even if the Note 10 later on this year comes with the x55 let them work out the bugs I don't want to be the guinea pig with the phone that chews up batteries and has spotty coverage. I think T-Mobile AT&T and Sprint made a good move passing on the 5G variant. Verizon's just going to market the hell out of it making it seem like we're the only carrier with 5G phones that work when in fact you're using a first generation I go as far as to say beta testing 5G network.

Yeah, I'm not a real fan of being a beta tester when I have to pay 1380 dollars for the privilege.
Someone is selling the Korean 5G Variant of the Note 10 - supposedly LTE will work on ATT - but will the 5G work on ATT when ATT Launches 5G ? Just curious....

I think it depends if its international unlocked.
I never used international phones in the usa recently so im not entirely sure.
I think that each country or region has its own 5g bands. Korea uses diff 5g bands than the usa.

Verizon won't be in trouble when T-Mobile and Sprint merges. T-Mobile and Sprint customers will be in trouble. Its going to take years to combine the two networks and I expect pricing to increase as they try to be a premier carrier.
