Hello. A friend of mine really smashed his phone. The phone still comes on but I can only see the very top right corner. The model is SM-J260A, I don't know if it is a Dash or a Shine. He wasn't connected to a network. He used it with wifi when it was close by. There is no password to access the phone.
He does have pictures and important contacts that were saved to the phone. Not google. There is no memory card. The SIM card is empty.
The USB debugging is off. I can't see enough of the screen to put it into recovery mode in order to use ADB.
Connecting it to my PC is useless because my computer doesn't see it. At all.
I've downloaded and installed Samsung USB drivers. Device manager doesn't see it. File Explorer doesn't see it.
Can anyone give me advice or another direction?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Not sure if this is the right place for this, however;
My gf's laptop had a virus on it that I didn't know about, I plugged my Samsung Galaxy S in, and suddenly I have a ".scr" clone of pretty much every folder on my phone. I deleted a load of them, plugged it back into the computer and sure enough they came back.
Now there are literally hundreds of the .scr clones on my phone.
Is there a way to delete them all?
Also, if this is not a virus and a bug instead, do let me know ha =]
You should probably try to format it to get rid of anything that may be in there. I wouldn't keep any of the files as they could have been currupted.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Quick update;
This is the virus found on the computer: http://www.virus-encyclopedia.com/virus/Network-Worms/other/worms1626.html
Not sure what relevance it has to the SGS as I don't understand any of it.
Download and install Everything.
Start the computer in safe mode.
Plug in your phone.
Run Everything OR right-click the phone's data drive and run everything.
Type in ".scr" in the search bar.
Delete every instance of this file.
Plug your phone out of the laptop.
Restart the laptop and scan it with a decent anti-virus (MSE).
NEVER PLUG YOUR PHONE BACK IN THAT LAPTOP AGAIN.
For extra security, you can now backup most of your important files, in case it gets corrupted (though I doubt it). And then format the sd card.
Hey Sygeek, about to try this out now, thanks for the help!
Also, this is the only laptop in which I can use my phone with, what are the reasons of not plugging it back in ever? (Except the obvious possible reinfection).

Just do a scan and make sure your laptop's virus-free (with that particular price). You should be fine then.
I very much doubt, that the virus would harm your sgs.
But it could have possibly copied it self over as it recognized your android as mass storage.
Hey guys, sorry I haven't updated in the past couple of days.
I think it was recognized as mass storage device Dark3n, you're right.
I couldn't figure out that search everything program, I did everything I was told but it didn't return any results, so what I did was as follows:
1. scan computer and delete all recorded instances of a virus.
2. restarted computer.
3. plugged phone in as mass storage device.
4. used my antivirus software to scan the phone (as mass storage device).
5. it then went on to delete all 382 instances of the virus.
6. unplugged phone, restarted it (i don't think i needed to, but I did anyway).
7. plugged phone back in and wallah, no more virus.
There was nothing missing, nothing wrong with android or anything, it was just an annoyance I guess.
Thanks for your help everyone.
Ok, I've been at this for two days now. I'm trying to get an S4 to display on a computer screen so it can still be used until the owner can afford a repair.
The screen isn't cracked, but the LCD and Digitizer are completely broken. The phone still functions when connected via USB.
- side note, my phone is currently in the same condition but before it went down I had it rooted and put into debugging mode. I was able to accomplish this feat without an issue, from my phone.
Okay, so the phone I'm currently trying to get this to work on:
1. Isn't rooted
2. Screen is black and no touch response
3. Not in developer mode, not set for debugging
4. Computer can recognize phone via USB
5. Able to still install apps from the goggle play store via the website
Goal: get it to be able to mirror/display on a computer
I've seen posts on the internet stating everything from impossible to no it's possible but we won't give you the details.
These things are basically handheld computers, even without it being "rooted" i should be able to access it in some way from a computer to put it in debugging mode even if i have to program it in myself. Which is why "impossible" is something I cannot swallow.
Any tips, advice or a point in the right direction here would be appreciated. Thank you.
-currently im trying out this Mobile Go program even with the phone not in debugging.
-I feel like there has to be a way to force the phone into debug mode even if you cannot physically use the touch screen or see anything.

Greetings,
Thank you for using XDA Assist. You can ask the experts in the GS4 Q&A forum found here:
Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
Good luck!
I've been a long time lurker and never really made an account.
But recently my Nexus 5 stopped working.
get no display, But I can assume the phone is on because when I connect it, the holder on my computer opens up.
I assume there is something wrong with the connection. sometimes i can play with the daughterboard and the backlight lights up. but there is still no display.
The problem is that the phone is in PTP instead of MPT.
I don't care about the phone much as the pictures on it, because they are the last picture I have of a family member that recently passed away in an accident.
Even though the phone is rooted. when I load up Nexus toolkit, the phone is listed as unauthorized and I don't know how to pull any files off of it.
Can someone help lead me to a solution?
Thank you in advance.
You can backup your files by using adb pull.
Check this out.
Has USB debugging been enabled? Have any of your computers been authorized by the phone?
Hi, I have a Ul40 cellphone version 7.1.1. for years I have been downloading into my phone, then using a USB cable to transfer what I want into my old Dell PC.
Yesterday I hooked them up and my phone will charge but not transfer files. My PC doesn't seem to recognize it. I rebooted my phone, deleted cached files, etc.
I googled up the problem, new cable, same problem. One resource said to go to settings, storage & 3 dots, then USB connection. Instead of getting the option to use it as a mtp, it would only give storage clean up.
What do I do now? Is there something specific for my model? If I factory reset it will it go back to normal? At one point my PC said something about drivers. I downloaded a no ads app, it didn't seem to do a anything and wanted to add more stuff to my phone and/or PC.
Is it simply time to get a new phone?
Thanks, BA
OP...noticed there were 7 views but no reply. My tech skills are very limited. Sorry if I did not post this in the right place or something.
Did anybody else have this problem, how would I find it? Thanks.
I am very computer illiterate so I am hoping someone can help me here! My friend has a Galaxy A01 with a broken screen and he needs his contacts off of it. He didn't have it backed up in google or anything. I have his broken phone here. CAnt I just connect his phone to my computer and somehow retrieve his contacts off of it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No, you have to be able to unlock the screen in order for PC to connect to the device. Your screen is broken which means you can't unlock the screen. If they did not have anything backed up to Google then I'm pretty sure they also did not have USB debugging enabled. Between the screen being broken and USB debugging not being enabled, you are pretty much screwed with no way to retrieve anything from the device.
This is what happens when one takes things for granted or never considers that things can easily go wrong and overlooks the necessity of backing up important data to avoid the situation they are currently in.
Accept your losses and consider it a learning experience. In the future, make certain to back up important data.
Hi, do you mean your computer can detect your friend's phone via USB cable? If yes, try Coolmuster Android Backup Manager. Its free backup function can help you access to contacts on the phone and export them to the computer via USB cable. It's easy and safe. You just need to enable USB debugging on the phone. About the details, please search online. Hope this will be your help.
You may not able to get back contacts if you don't have a backup on Google. You can check the local backup. If you have taken local backup then, you can bring back his contacts.
