Will the phone get updates from Google or T-mobile?
I'm guessing neither. LG has a desktop app that they push updates through. Unless something's different with the G2X I'd assume they'll come through the LG app.
You could also get them from www.cyanogenmod.com!

Quoted for truth.
Hmm. So we could possibly be waiting for LG to do this? That is a potential deal-breaker for me. With pure Google experience and updates we are much more future proof.

You're looking at getting a Nexus S or Nexus One then. For those of us not willing to pay full price, and wanting better hardware, we have to deal with manufacturers instead.

I know, but this has more appealing hardware. I just don't get it if it really is LG pushing updates... Why not just let Google handle everything?
Yeah but the update has to go through tmo first before the release it, the have to make sure their crapware is in there.

What I'm saying is no phone out there but the Nexus S or Nexus One has AOSP Android. Every other phone has a version modified by the manufacturer. Google has nothing to do with these changes. The only one who can release updates is the manufacturer (or service provider if the manufacturer chooses to send the update to them first).
That's just the way it is.
Are you opposed to rooting your phone and installing custom ROMs? If you are interested in that, CM will be your best bet by far as you get the best of both worlds (CM had Gingerbread on even the Nexus One before Google did!).
If you don't want to use unofficial software, you should stick with the Nexus line. Even pure vanilla Android devices get updates through the carriers, that is how it is and how it always will be. Nexus phones are different as they are not sold through the carriers, just designed to work on them. They are managed entirely through Google which means updates come from Google.

I was under the impression that the vanilla devices (like the G2x obviously) was AOSP. Do you know what is modified on this version by LG? I know there is preinstalled software, but that is different than changes to AOSP.

LG's committed to before Summer. The O2X forum has them giving June as a time frame.

Just because they have the update for the O2x by June, doesn't mean the G2x will be ready. The two use different software, plus there are different expectations I think between the US market and European. I hope they come together, but I wouldn't be surprised if LG does the O2x first and then gets working on the G2x.
Bob from Wirefly.com said that he talked to someone from T-Mobile when he got the G2X for review and they said the 2.3 update was coming in one month. I'm not holding my breath, though.

It's not AOSP vanilla, but it's the closest you will get to it without buying a Nexus phone. There's lots of little tinkering to the OS on the LG2x. For example there's a "DTS" button in the music player to enable dts sound. Also, there's the T-Mobile motto when you drag down the status bar. There's a "tethering may incur charges" warning when you turn on wifi hotspot. There are different notification and ringtones put in. Etc etc. If you put this phone next to a Nexus phone, you will see lots of little differences beyond just the T-Mobile bloatware installed.

Interesting. Mine will be delivered tomorrow so I guess I'll see soon. I've had a Nexus One since release, so I'm sure whatever is different, I will notice. Thanks for the clarification.
Not sure where, but I read from one of the CM guys (I think, don't kill me) that it's not AOSP at all! It's actually that same O2X ROM themed to look like AOSP Froyo
So apparently, Samsung agrees with the masses who HATE the new Sound & Notification system Google has pushed with Lollipop. Samsung is rolling out an update bringing back the good old way of things (Sound/Vibrate/Mute). YAY!

Sadly, I see this as a way for VZW to lock us out of downgrading back to KK. I'm actually surprised it didn't happen with OA8.

That would be ideal for VZ, but is there any indication that's what's happening with this update?
Ya there is no indication of any of that in this update.... Just sounds like a grumpy reply to some potentially great news

So has anyone taken this update?
Edit: Never mind. See now its not out for verizon

BOB7 already came out a while ago....internationally. In fact, I'm on BOB7 right now because some Dev's ported it over to us Verizon people. Officially though, I have no idea if this will ever reach Verizon phones. I do know that BOC4 looks like it will officially be delivered to US Verizon S5's. Someone posted up a link to a Verizon thing about it (can't remember where it is here).
Getting a used Verizon Pixel soon as backup/google home/project fi activation unit. So I'm learning about the situations here. It seems although people are able to unlock it and flash to stock firmware, it's still not possible to get stock OTA after all... right? I know I can do everything I want with it as is, but I still prefer a clean system... So if total debloat is not possible, is there an app or anything like Package Disabler for Pixels?

Just go to apps and unistall the apps you don't want. They are not locked in there like the old days.

The updates come regularly, but are usually a couple weeks behind the standard update. There is a Verizon specific version of each monthly release... You can see them all on the Google download page. Curious to see how it goes with Android O getting released Monday though... Might be a bigger delay there. We will see.

Sit down for this answer it will knock you off your feet.
They are actually a few hours ahead. Both Google and VZ release on the first Monday of the month late morning. But since VZ is east coast they start dropping sooner.
Also, Google makes the VZ versions so they are available for download from Googles dev site....same time as the plain Google version. And its all different on this phone, the VZ version just has some radio and network changes. There is no bloat in it. You actually get that from VZ when you put the VZ SIM in it. I got it on my Google version when I put the SIM in it.
And its not much, just the basics. MY Verizon, Visual Voicemail. That kind of stuff.

Not that I'm worried about anything, but it seems like a lack of effort on T-mobiles part to keep up with these things.
I'm not sweating it. I'm hoping that we're able to get the international software like the 6T was able to.

Once you get your OP unlocked from T-Mobile you can get your bootloader unlock code from OP and switch to the firmware directly from OnePlus.
(Revised 3/2/21)
If by now, you haven't received this firmware update from your wireless provider, something is askew and you probably should start looking that. Other than that, if you're not already running on it, you've probably made that choice!
As with all software updates, it's never a bad time to either perform a new backup before commencing with the OTA download, or at least check on what date your showing for the last one (usually, you'll find your handset performs these daily, once every 24 hours). As for me personally, that's my cue to run my backup to my microsd card via the Smartswitch app!
The last friendly reminder I wanted to share witb some of our newcomers that have recently graced us with their presence, is to make certain you're at (or pretty damn close) to 75% charged on your new flagship! The way these new "beasts" we own "bleed-out" our batteries, it's not a bad idea to "up the ante" with the old school rule of having your battery at 50% or more before downloading the update! I saw this same topic mentioned on one of the other forums/channels the other day and thought it was some good advice? Eh, to each his/her own...whatever works for you!

I read Samsung already started rolling out out this update at the beginning of the week(2/15)
to include this handset. I'm TMB and that's a
no-go (so far) and Sprint hasn't rolled it out either.
Anyone with new Intel on this matter, please share as a small monetary contribution will be made available(jk)!

yep, saw that, but you're an Unlocked, Carrier Branded SM-N986U, not SM-N986U1. That's where my confusion came about until I figured it out looking at FOTA!
I know it's no cause for alarm (with samsung, it happens more often than not) but I didn't see a new build # assigned yet for XAA(as if they hadn't started one, but much more likely they just failed to update their system)!
However, for those of you SM-N986U1 users (like myself) seeing this dialog, we could be in for a little longer wait, meaning we may not have Our Update by this coming Monday (3/1), as a few of the websites I saw earlier were speculating!
(We will know more soon, I'm certain)!

**ONE UI 3.1 SOFTWARE UPDATE IS HERE!**
I'm on the unlocked SM-N986U1 connected to Verizon and still no update for me. I thought having an unlocked phone straight from Samsung would put me in line to get the updates first, but I guess not. I was one of the last N20U users to get 3.0, and now the same seems to be the case for 3.1. I saw articles talking about it being pushed out the Note 10's already.

I have bought two notes from Samsung directly over the years because I was under the impression if I bought the phones straight from Sammy I would get more features and faster updates. But as time goes on I see now that the unlocked phones are second class to Sammy. It seem to me like Sammy can't help but stroke off the carriers and bend to what they want.
