Amazon shopping app battery drain - Google Pixel 4a Questions & Answers

Started this morning, the Amazon shopping app had been draining battery excessively, as reported in battery settings. It says the app is running even though I'm not using it in the foreground. There is a notification that i couldn't swipe away. The phone is warm to touch, i uninstalled it for now. Anyone has the same problem? Thank you.

I'm not an Amazon hater but I rarely install their crappy apps after a few bad experiences. Browse the site instead. Request text notifications if tracking order progress is important.

Force stop the app, clear cache. Make sure it's up to date.
I use Amazon daily, and it's always at or near the bottom of the list for battery usage.

You could just bookmark it in chrome

I've never had any problems with Amazon. I recently started looking for kitchen scales, and Amazon came to the rescue in this search. I found a model that really suits me https://www.amazon.com/Vont-Beautiful-Measurement-Stainless-Batteries/dp/B08SW6F5SZ I have been thinking for a long time about which scales to take, different configurations, the accuracy of measurements, even differ depending on the error. The choice of them is huge, I am not strong in technology, so the choice was very difficult for me, but I did not regret my choice at all.

It's a busy little beaver... that should tell you something. Really you can easily live without it and access Amazon on your browser.
FB, WhatsApp, LinkedIn etc apps are never on my device, they are security risks and potential battery hogs.
You can try clearing the system cache and a network reset.

I've heard only bad things about the harvesting the amazon app does.
I don't close my browser down ever. tracking a delivery is basically refreshing the your orders / track delivery page.

It's very small but look at it's permissions... that explains why it chews up battery.

Is there something wrong with my battery?

Well I just switched to Android and I'm loving it! It's awesome. However I'm really having a problem with my battery. I got this phone on Sunday...and the battery life for me has been horrible for me.
I leave my phone on the charger all night. I have to leave for school, and I take my phone off the charger around 8:00am.
Throughout the school day, I'll check my phone a couple times. I probably send like 10-15 texts, and I take a few pictures at lunch. That's all I do, nothing else. By the end of the day (2:45) the battery is at 50%. I don't understand how a battery can be this bad, when it's in standby almost the whole day.
I have advanced task killer installed, and I have it set so all apps are killed when the screen is off, and it auto-kills apps. I turn off wi-fi at school since I don't get any, and my screen brightness is at auto. No live wallpaper either, just a normal still one. So I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I understand the battery isn't the biggest, but from what I hear everyone else is getting better battery life then me, and they're doing so much more than me.
Any help? Would be appreciate!
First things first, get rid of task killer. Also see what's syncing. Play with the settings a little. Battery is tiny for this phone. But with tweaking it does the job. Best bet is to get a second battery or an extended battery from the desire hd.
Why should I get rid of task killer? Everyone that I speak to that has android told me to get it. When I don't have it, I have all these apps running in the background like Asphalt 5, AT&T Navigator, Maps, and a bunch of crap that shouldn't even be running. I have pretty much everything syncing, does that kill the battery?
Taskiller was ok back in earlier versions of android. The apps aren't actually running they are stored in memory with no impact on CPU. Constant syncing is going to destroy your battery.
Davwman is absolutely correct about the task killer app. Do some googling on this and you will see that it creates more issues than helps.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Alright, thanks a lot! I fixed the syncing, and a message popped up saying that it will extend the battery life. I'm going to assume this is going to help a lot, since Facebook and my email was probably constantly updating during. I'll look into the task killer as well!
You should see an improvements in the following days as well as the battery is settling in.
If not, Id ask AT&T for a replacement of the unit for another one.
If you have any battery widgets I would remove those too. I had batstatt and it was destroying my battery!!!
The battery isn't too great... 1230mAH ... I did send an e-mail to HTC regarding replacement batteries and they said I quote..
Dear Sean,
There's absolutely a chance of extended batteries being made; plenty of our devices have them made for them. At this time I don't know for sure if we're going to have one, as that decision is made by a completely different department and the Inspire 4G has only been available for less than a week. If we are to have one available, you will be able to find it at shopamerica.htc.com. I hope that we have one available as I know how useful they can be.

You really need to turn off auto-brightness as well. That will suck up battery power. Just set your brightness to a reasonable level. I usually keep mine around 35-40%
also auto rotate and data always on could affect it
Look into a widget that will allow you to kill data when you don't need it. Switchpro is a paid app and will allow this but I'm sure there are free ones.
You will still be able to send and receive calls as well as sms.
This should help get more out of the battery life.
As previously stated you might also look into picking up a spare battery for when you need the juice.
Check amazon and ebay. Beware of anything coming from China.

This.
Everytime your screen adjusts, its using CPU. So turn it off, get rid of the task killer,- when you kill them, chances are most of them are starting back up and that's making it worse.
Flash/ or wait for a version with all of this horrendous bloat removed.
It will get better
I'm actually pretty happy with mine.
I'm at 15 hours off charge, exactly 20% battery left, 3 hours screen on time
turn off syncing. dont us gps or navigation programs. no live wallpaper. i use this phone like my old Tilt 2 and i get about the same amount of battery life out of it (1 day) and i charge it at night. now on my phone i have syncs running for email and facebook and what not i send and recieve about 30 - 50 txts a day. lots of email. photos for work, i DO have live wallpaper loaded so i think the battery is just fine. however yes i will want a bigger battery when this one dosnt accomplish a full day without a charge.. oh ya games will eat into your battery as well!

Battery Life Help Thread

Ok guys I have prbassplayer's blessing on this thread and he feels it may work so lets keep this civil and make it a helpful and definitive thread to help any and all users get better battery life. From here on this will be the only thread on battery life all others in q&a and general will be reported and hopefully closed. it is open to people in the skyrocket section on any rom and kernel combo. There are rules and standards that any who wish for help on this thread.
Rules
All requests for help must be in this format as this will help in speedy and decent recommendations.
1.Rom & Kernel Combo
2.How long you have been on said combo ex. 3 days and number of cycles will help considerably too.
3.Screenshots
1.Battery Graph
2.Screen on time
3.Better Battery Stats info (If applicable but not required).
4.general usage info as in how do you use your phone give us details into what you do through the day.
You can not suggest another rom.
this thread will not be turned into a best rom thread it is to help others get the most out of their current setups you may suggest other kernels but if you suggest another rom i will report your post and it will be removed.
My hope is that this will cut down on tons of threads and give everyone a good place to get help please guys lets make this section awesome like it used to be.
I think u should also ad to the op (nrm ) a few simple guidelines or places/things they can go and independently research. Not spoon feeding mind u, just a starting point. here are a few examples that come to mind:
1) Underclocking/governors
2) Undervolting
3) Wakelocks (pre-established thread anyone?)
4) Droidwall/background data usage & sync
5) CPU Sleeper & alternatives
6) Auto brightness controls (cm9, lux, etc...)
7) Wifi as alternative
8) H+ instead of LTE
9) Modem/radio choice
10) Sleep/display time outs etc...
And MOST IMPORTANTLY, avoiding apps like Juice Defender
I'll look into adding as we go thanks for the ideas bro

I'll start, because I just got the best battery I've gotten to date yesterday. WOO!
Note: I used stock charger to charge the night before, although no wake locks, i always restart in the morning. Dont know if it helps... I feel like it does.
1. CM9 Stable, InstigatorX 5.4.5
2. installed 2 days ago-ish
3. see attached.
4. Forgot to get a screen on time screeny... was like 2 hours. light useage. auto brightness
5. badass governor, used the cwm script to get both cores to be governed. 1.72/192
6. LTE/Wifi all day, baby. Mostly wifi.
7. there was a slight period of charge when i moved over some music. wasnt more than ~10 minutes of being plugged into my laptop.
8. exchange email on 15 minute syncing periods. Turned off push, as i can deal with the 15 minutes between emails... BEST. BATTERY SAVER. EVER.
9. gps off. didnt use it at all. I missed the key screen shots... I know. I only have this because i was bragging to my friend who's got a s3 on verizon and a sucky battery.
couple phone calls, probably 30 texts. it was pretty light usage these days. Color me impressed.
OHH! i have the nexus extended battery.

Not having bad battery life, but hey, it can always be better right!?!
First off, GREAT thread idea, it's a shame it hasn't really been utilized though. How about I start. I'm wondering a bit about how much battery I can save if I get rid of Google maps. Also, if you have any recommendations of a replacement for it if I do dump it. Even if I don't open the application the entire day, it is consistently in the top stats on my BBS reports. I'm not really sure of the effect it will have if I get rid of it though. I mean, if it is only going to get me another 40-60 minutes per charge, I don't know if it would be worth losing the convenient access to reliable maps.
Anyway, I thought I'd toss this out and see what everyone thinks.
I'm currently running Majicks Orthus One (quite happily I might add) and I've been on it for almost a week now. I generally don't use my phone too much during the weekdays while at work but, once I get home, the screen is generally on until I go to bed. On weekends, which is when I grabbed these screenies and BBS dumb, I am on WIFI most of the day, but I use my phone ALL DAY LONG even though I've got my laptop and rooted Kindle running CM10 sitting right next to me. LOL!
Other than the apps I've added (around 70 total), I've got it set up pretty much as if I just flashed it. By this, I mean that I haven't really done any battery tweaking. It's on badass gov by default, and I am utilizing the bln feature (I know it hates my battery, but I LOVE this feature). I get pretty good life usually (12-16 hours with 3-5 hours of screen on time), and I haven't really seen the media wake locks which are affecting others. Also, and I know I'm asking a ton (and maybe even being a bit of a battery miser considering I'm already getting decent time on my charges), but do you see anything else that should be a cause of alarm to me? Everything looks minuscule to me compared to Maps, but I know that there are many people who know much more than me when it comes to this stuff. So all thoughts are welcome.Without further adeau, here are some of my screen shots and BBS dump...
Thanks in advance! I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Great idea. I'll contribute as well.
I'm also on Orthus-One, and whatever kernel comes with. One change I made was to change the governor to Conservative. Not entirely sure what that does, but I thought I'd throw it out.
I've been on this ROM for 28ish hours, so today was day 1. I've rebooted a few times. Can't remember how many.
I don't know that I've done a whole lot to reduce battery usage. Today I was on wifi almost all day, but normally I fluctuate between H+ and LTE (LTE near work, H+ most of the drive home, wifi at home).
Brightness is set at a constant ~35% with auto brightness removed. I don't use my phone for anything other than answering calls in the car, so that suits me.
I don't play any games that would be battery intensive, and only watch videos (from sd) when it's plugged in. Rarely listen to music, but that's likely to change next week on vacation.
These shots were taken about 3 hours ago. There's been another hour and a quarter of screen on time since then. I used my phone a lot today, as you can see.
Also, I don't know if it makes a difference, but I took the case I had off of my phone yesterday, and it doesn't seem to get anywhere near as hot. Probably a coincidence, but I thought I'd mention it.
Since it was mentioned above, this is all on a Standard battery.

That's actually not half bad battery life. I noticed a few things, though. One is the NetworkLocationLocator wakelock. Leaving network location on will chew away your battery like that. If you can do without a location service more often than not, I'd leave it and GPS off. I actually think network location is less useful than GPS--GPS doesn't use *that* much more battery, and it's precise. With network location, if a couple of wifi networks near you have "_nomap" appended to the end of their name, you're lost.
The only other PWL I saw was Avast. Personally, I don't think any of the "anti-virus" apps are worth the time it takes to download them. They sit there eating up battery, when really all you need to make sure your phone doesn't pick up a virus or malware is common sense. Only install apps from Play, Amazon and XDA (third-party markets will often put bootloaders and other bad stuff in their apps), don't click anything on shady-looking websites, and leave USB debugging off unless you need it.
KWLs all look ok. BLN is murdering you, but if the feature's worth the battery sacrifice, more power to you.
Alarms look fine, but keep an eye on Facebook. It used a ton of network data for apparently only being active 28s (according to the PWL data). Do you have it set to use push notifications or refresh on a short schedule?

Not a coincidence at all. "Naked" phones run cooler than phones in a case. Shouldn't be by a ton (if it is, get a new case), but a case, naturally, restricts airflow, which allows more heat to build up. I had to stop using my Otterbox Defender for that reason--the phone was just getting too hot inside the case, and I was starting to be concerned.

Yeah, after seeing maps eating up so much power, I changed it to not automatically update my location. I was using it cause the wife is a bit of a worry wart and she heard a story from a friend that their husband was in a motorcycle accident not involving another car and wasn't found for about 12 hours cause he fell into a ditch off a country road. Now, she thinks that if one of us ever get into an accident, that latitude is going to save us. Lol! I get the theory behind it, but her iphone only updates it sporadically anyway so it's not really worth much. I unchecked all location services, and I'll just turn on gps when I need it and see how that treats me.
Anti-virus is more for if I lose my phone. I like the remote wipe feature, as well as the Web and app firewall. Plus, it doubles as a security blanket for me lol
BLN is a power monger, but I love being able to have that option so I deal with it.
FB is a pain in the butt in general, but I haven't found an app I like to use in its place so I've just dealt with it. I do have it set to push notifications, but I've read that you think it may be misbehaving even when it's not set to push data, so I may just dump it and try fast for Facebook or friendcaster for a bit to see if I can deal with one of those.
I appreciate you looking into this for me as you are pretty much the battery guru around here. I was a bit worried that no one was looking at this thread cause it wasn't really being utilized. I don't understand why, when everyone wants to open a thread for battery life, they don't seem to want to utilize the one sanctioned by our mod. But that seems to just be xda in general lately.

If you're willing to, freeze/uninstall Maps and use MapQuest and/or OSMAnd instead. Both eat up far less battery, and MapQuest has basically all the same features. I use Waze as well, but that's more for speed trap notifications than anything else.

Just an FYI, you can have the Avast theft protection app (the one they tell you to give a custom name to) on your phone without the full Avast suite. Eats up almost no battery, and can be set to wipe upon X number of failed attempts to sign in.

Friendcaster and Tweetcaster have both had great results for me. The Twitter app's biggest sin is a stray alarm that'll hold you awake for 10-15 seconds every so often. The Facebook app, though, is (I can only assume) downloading ad data and sending usage info back at set intervals, even if you have it set to refresh every X hours. I caught on when I had it set to never auto-update, but saw that it was still using mobile data.
As far as mobile protection I don't use antivirus but I have Cerberus for tracking wiping and the like

First problem is you're using juice defender. Imo, that app does more harm than good on ics. It also looks like the gtalk app is waking you up way to much. If you don't use it, I'd say to delete it or, at the very least, log out of it when you aren't using it. Maps, like with my last setup, is killing you. I'd recommend following tj benders advice to me and either freeze it, or delete it all together and try one of his suggestions for a replacement.
Also, we're you charging at any point during that cycle, running at 384 for over 3 hours suggests to me that you had either charged for a while, or ya got an app going crazy. That is, unless your screen on time correlation is similar. Without the screen shots Illnevertell asked for, I can't really tell much more.
If ignorance is bliss, you must be orgasmic. Don't let your pants get wet and use that search button.

Solved
My apologies for not having followed thread rules on my prior post. I had just come from another battery thread that actually wanted BBS in zip form as the only post.
My prior BBS dump showed that my culprit wakelock was Suspend_Backoff. Searching I found the following thread:
productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/chrome/rT0ewNsBx18/0_RqLGBQr70J
I unchecked "Enable Tilt Scrolling" in Google Chrome settings and recharged my battery to 100%.
I then left it on idle all night just like it had been when I generated the last BBS file dump.
As you can see the results are drastically improved. Went from losing 65% of battery in 5 1/2 hours to losing 25% in 9 hours. Also went from 5% deep sleep to 94%!
Still not pefect but definitely a significant improvement. Thanks for the great thread!
Spectre one thing is network location I would turn that off until you need it also that giant cliff dropoff I'm assuming was a reboot of sorts that went uncaught I know that for me I don't get reboots on jb I go to recovery and clear my caches first thing then I make sure to close every app as I'm done using it as far as bbs I'll leave that to tj as he is a wakelock god at this point lol

Google Maps, basically, is the answer. It's polling NetworkLocationLocator pretty constantly. If you turn location services off, you'll help yourself tremendously. I still recommend uninstalling Maps (usual disclaimer about uninstalling system processes) and using an alternate app like Mapquest, OSMAnd and/or Waze to clean up all of those Maps-generated alarms.
Beyond that, HD Widgets is definitely keeping you awake some, so you might want to change the refresh time on that. That being said, I can't imagine HD Widgets is doing too much damage to your battery life or people wouldn't use it.
Post up another BBS dump if you get a chance. Also, BBS dumps are a great way to tell if you've randomly rebooted (which, yeah, can chew through a ton of battery) because they'll differ from the "up-time" shown by your battery screen. Also, if you set your phone down at 9:00 PM and wake up at 7:00 AM, but your BBS dump says it's only been five hours since boot, you know you've got some random rebooting going on.

Qualcomm's BatteryGuru

I saw a new app in the play store from Qualcomm that's made specifically for Snapdragon SoC's like our phone has. It's called BatteryGuru. Just thought I would share the info.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xiam.snapdragon.app
Here's a short write up from Android Central:
Snapdragon BatteryGuru (Beta): is better battery life really just an app install away?
Qualcomm has seemingly out of nowhere released Snapdragon BatteryGuru, an app to help users with devices that have Snapdragon processors make the most out of their batteries. The app has some pretty lofty promises, and with support from the same manufacturer as your processor you'd hope that it would be able to help with battery life a notable amount.
So can Snapdragon BatteryGuru solve the battery woes on your new phone? Hit the break and see our results.
The Snapdragon BatteryGuru will only install on (you guessed it) Snapdragon-powered devices. Luckily with the popularity of the S4 Pro in the recent months, that's a whole lot of phones. I let the app have a go at improving the battery life on my stock Nexus 4. The tutorial when first opening the app gives you a pretty good idea of what the BatteryGuru plans to do. It explains that your phone has dozens of apps constantly syncing to the internet, sometimes unnecessarily, and it can help manage that syncing to improve battery life.
Once you exit setup, you'll see a notification hit your status bar indicating that the app is "In learning mode", and it will notify you when the battery savings start. The idea is that Snapdragon BatteryGuru will "watch" how you use your phone -- which apps are open most often, whether you use Wifi, etc. -- and adjust the sync settings of individual apps accordingly. After 2-4 days (ours popped up in 2), the app will let you know that it has learned all it can, and it is ready to save your battery life.
At this point there's actually nothing to do. The app will continue on its merry way, saving you battery without any user intervention. We would think that because this is an app made by the processor manufacturer that it would be able to offer more than the average battery-saver app, but we're not so convinced that this is the case. On the surface, it seems that the only thing BatteryGuru is doing is changing the sync interval for individual apps, which is always a double-edged sword.
We must admit that in our few days of anecdotal testing, the battery did seem to last longer on our Nexus 4 than it did before installing the app. The other thing we noticed is that we were not getting push email alerts from Gmail anymore -- which is not a good thing. Although I check my Gmail dozens (okay, maybe hundreds) of times a day, BatteryGuru still made the decision to lower its sync interval to save battery life. This is fine for an app like Words With Friends because I really don't need to know when someone makes a play that exact second, but for apps like Gmail and Google Talk, this isn't a good idea.
Thankfully, you can go into BatteryGuru's settings and manually override the interval it has chosen to sync for each app it has access to. The problem being that it's not exactly clear if this will always be the case, or if at some point the app will choose to turn off sync again. For the most important push notifications, I want to be completely certain that I'll receive them.
If you're someone that doesn't always need 100-percent push alerts for items like Gmail, Skype and Google+, and have a Snapdragon-powered device, then BatteryGuru can probably add a bit of a buffer to your battery life. If you absolutely need to have certain apps syncing right on time, then I'd be weary to completely trust this app to manage the sync intervals for you. Go give it a shot at the Play Store link above, and let us know how it works for you.

I checked it too and its a cool idea for sure! My only personal issue was that it requires location services to function, and I dont use gps in general.
Edit: nevermind, if anonymous feedback is disabled in its settings location services can be turned off and it will still function. Phone's in learning mode, ill report back once its set up.

If you check Better Battery Stats you will see that this app constantly wakes up the device to check the state of certain services. In one night (in learning mode) I got around 900 wakeups. It has been in battery saving mode since, and its woken my device up 388 times in one night and drains nearly 10%.
My device is better off not using an app that supposedly is supposed to save battery but actually drains more than it saves. Its ironic that every automation app claims to help make things easier and helpful, but in the end everything is worse.
By the way, I have the Galaxy S2 T989 (Hercules) so our devices are pretty similar.

It's not in learning mode anymore on my phone and it's not an issue when I look at Better Battery Stats. Current uptime is 12hrs 23min and it's been in Deep Sleep for 9hrs 22min. Consia (com.xiam.snapdragon.app.BatteryGuru) is listed as consuming 17sec on my partial wakelocks. That's really nothing.
Wait you guys need an app specifically to control sync intervals?

That's a minor, optional feature provided. The point of the the app is to regulate battery consumption based on usage, and we are experimenting with it because the manufacturer of our processor built the app.

Out of curiosity, how long did learning mode run for you?

I'm not retarded lol I'm well aware of the vendor and was able to read and comprehend the op.
What does the app actually do though aside from control sync.

Some apps using massive amounts of battery

Ive noticed that randomly some apps seem to get "hung" and use massive amounts of battery. I've noticed it with maps, paypal and chrome so far.
For example, I'll use the paypal app, exit and put my phone in my pocket, a couple of hours later I'll check my battery stats to find that paypal counts for 30% of my battery consumption, and continues to do so until I force close the app.
Has anyone else had this? I don't think its hardware issue since It's happened on both my first device which I RMA'd, and my replacement device. It seems to happen randomly.

That happened to me with Venmo. It showed up as like 40% one day after I made one transaction. I force closed it, and the problem went away.
Lots of people are having problems with Google Services, now. This thread had more info on that problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2519831

No one talking about battery life?

I couldn't see any posts about battery life but I have to say I am pleasantly surprised with how good the battery is.
I haven't faffed about with a million settings to try and optimize battery usage, just left everything the way they are and it just works.

If you head over to the real life review section I think it's called, you'll see some battery discussion. With that said, I'm right there with you, great battery life that I've not once since owning the phone for several weeks now had to charge up over the day. Everything is stock, only I've rooted for adaway. No messing with settings, no app restrictions, nothing. Just as it came out the box. I'm self employed in the construction industry, my daily routine when working is gps, 3 email accounts syncing, messaging, banking apps, browsing, camera, I even use QuickBooks app that has mileage tracking which basically, anytime I'm on the move it's forcing gps. Zero complaints.
