note 20 ultra and non root alternatives to adaway - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

I've been using rooted phones since the HTC Evo. I'm not sure if I will know how to act having this phone without root access. As many others have mentioned in other forums, my main reason for root currently is the ability to use adaway as it works great for all around adblocking. Seeing that they have the non root option which uses a DNS loopback, how well does this work?
I see DNS66 and Adguard as other options too but I have no experience with this style of adblocking. How happy am I going to be without root for adblocking?
I would purchase the HK model but the bands they list are missing many of tmobile's 4g LTE and 5g mhz's. Does anyone know if the HK model actually uses a different modem than the US and other variants? I thought on past phones they used the same modems then let the firmware define what to connect with (or I could be dreaming this up).

Use adguard
Yeah I don't get 5g on fi but my one plus pro 8 did though the speed was crap

blokada

I also use blokada

I have been using NextDNS and it works great.

Blokada for the win

I'm using adguard on my Note 10+ and my Note 20 Ultra. Using the non root version of adaway on my OnePlus 7 Pro and LD V60 and it seems to work relatively well.

I am using dns.adguard.com as my DNS server and this blocks all the in-app ads without any additional software.

Adguard for a few years now, very happy with it !

I use Brave browser. It has user selectable shields for each website and then remembers what you select. You can easily adjust them on the fly.
It blocks all the adds and trackers on Fox News...

Under more connection settings, I set my private DNS to dns.adguard.com and it works great. Blocks ads in all my apps. It doesn't slow down my connection at all.

If in US order from Microsoft. I just posted a thread with links.

What is the quickest, easiest and the best non root option you can immediately download and use on a chrome browser?

I've been using Blokada and honestly, it's amazing. The only thing it fails to block is youtube ads.

[Q] Thinking about Picking up an M8

I have really only used moto phones in the past so bear with me.
1) Will I be able to ROM the M8?
2) What is the difficulty in ROMing the phone compared to a Moto w/ safestrap?
3) Is there an app similar to moto hotspot or can HTC phones only tether? Can it be unlocked?
4) How will the 3 above questions compare / contrast to an S5?
Thanks!
-Justin
You can't ROM the M8 yet as the boot loader isn't unlocked.
Don't really understand #3 but there is a Verizon hotspot app. And by unlocked do you mean to use on other carriers?
Can't really answer #4 because the S5 isn't out yet

You can Rom the Moto Phones with locked bootloaders, just with ROMs that are derived from the factory one, no CM etc. So the M8 will be similar in this regard? On another forum someone was telling me the selling point over the S5 was that the bootloader will be unlocked. So I guess this probably requires a GPE phone then, and isn't much of a selling point for me since I cant use a GPE phone on verizon...
By unlocked I mean free hotspot, the moto phones come with a motorolla hotspot which is quite easy to hack / unlock for use (the hotspot does not work otherwise without paying for it).
Some people do have their hands on the S5, but I guess I can assume it would be locked down similar to the S4. Are Samsung phones locked down any differently than the HTC Phones or are all companies locking the bootloader on verizon phones now?
Thanks,
Justin.

Yes, there's a hotspot app. The hotspot app isn't anything unique to any given manufacturer. It's a part of the Android OS.
The question is, can you use it or not without paying. If you don't have unlimited data it shouldn't cost you anything. If you have unlimited data you have to pay as of right now. There isn't any hack to disable the Verizon check at this time. Won't be until we get access to the system partition.

Interesting, again coming from motorolla:
Teathering = single device can connect.
Wifi hotspot = multiple devices can connect.
But that's the way it has been in the past with my moto phones so please forgive me since I guess this has changed.

Is the hotspot app called Mobile hotspot?
On my motorolla with root I can use dSQLiteManager and flip a bit in the com.motorolla.android.providers.settings DB and enable the free hotspot. If I lose this ability with HTC M8 I guess I will have to look into another motorolla phone. Or at least I will have to hold off for now.
It's the same app as Moto has. It's an Android thing. And, yes, it's called Mobile Hotspot. All phones I've had up until now were Motos. It's the same thing.
However, like I said before, there is no hack for it yet. One of the first things I did when we got root was check for the entitlement check thing using sqlite and that entry isn't there anymore. From what I can find, it sounds like the newer Moto phones don't have it either. I did come across a hack for the M7 which involves editing an xml file but haven't tried it. My guess is you'd have to reboot to get it to take effect and given the way root works on this phone, the change wouldn't stick after you rebooted the phone.
USB tethering works fine though. However, if the hotspot is a must for you, you better wait or else plan on paying for it, at least for a while.

I mostly use it with my Android Nook HD+, so I don't think USB tether would work, but that's not worth $30 a month to simply use a larger screen. I would assume if there is no hack for the M7 their probably will not be for the M8 then. Thanks for everyones help.
There is one for the M7.

Well, that might or might not help. If the Nook can't see an adhoc network, it's no good in this case. I have a Xoom that wouldn't see one when it was stock. A lot of devices require infrastructure mode which the hotspot is. The Nook may or may not support adhoc. But like I said, some devices require it (infrastructure). I have a laptop that doesn't work with adhoc mode. So, it's not just related to mobile devices.

Is there a DEV that can create a flashable zip/mod for international roms on G900P

Hey guys,
I have been noticing, ever since the MM update came out earlier this year, development has slowed to a crawl for this phone. There are a few roms that look really nice, but are not really good as a daily driver, as some have missing functions such as Phone and Contacts, and other stuff is glitchy. But over on the international G900F forums they are overloaded with different great roms with tons of support and updates and all that good stuff. And looking at the difference between the Sprint G900P Galaxy S5 and the Unlocked variant (The G900F in particular) they have 95% of the same internal components, with the only difference being the Modem to communicate with the CDMA (Sprint) and GSM (every other carrier basically) Towers. This is the reason why the roms will boot, and everything will work perfectly hardware and driver wise other than picking up a signal for the Sprint Users.
So what I am asking is if there is a Developer out there who can compile a flash-able zip or something alike that includes the drivers for the Modem and sprint Libs. Or even if there is someone who has a background in this that could point me into a good place to start, I would be glad to do it. What does everyone think about this?
my question for you is why do you want this? I only ask because i was running MOAR 7.0 for my trip to Romania and Bulgaria this summer. I spent 2 weeks in a town 5 hours northwest of Bucharest and tons of town around Transylvania and a week down by the black sea in Bulgaria and my S5 was working perfectly on vodafone, never had an issue at all. Im domestically sim unlocked, but that shouldnt matter as the SSU apk should get you internationally unlocked and ready for use abroad. That being said, none of the international ROMs would give you an unlock for international or domestic use.

I think you read the question wrong (perfectly fine, i didnt really word it very well on my part). What i was asking is if there could be a universal patch to make the Sprint LTE and Messaging and all that good stuff work on an international rom. I think it is possible as there is currently something that is exactly that, except for Verizon (the G900V variant).

Oh, my bad. Well, sprint lte isn't going to work overseas. To get lte, you'll need to do quite a bit of finagling with an nv calculator, qpst and qxdm. You'll first need to fine out what bands the carrier you'll be using utilizes, get the nv figures that they run on and make some changes to the modem you have installed on your phone. That involves getting into the diagnostic port of the device and, well, there's a whole thread devoted to exactly that. Anyways, hspa+ will work without too much effort, and hspa+ is pretty dang snappy. Messaging will work right out of the box after registering on the GSM network(+1 to gsm ) MMS and data will work also once you've entered the correct APN settings. If you REALLY need lte, then you're relegated to some tweaking, but if you can live with 5 to 7 Mbps(which is all a phone really needs, unless you're tethering for a laptop or several tablets or something like that), then just do the hspa+ thing. I was happily able to tool along quite well on that streaming YouTube, Netflix, Google map navigating, etc etc without issue. The reason there isn't a universal fix is because it would take quite some doing to maintain an app to have all those apns and so forth, but that being said, the idoneapps apk does do that for the available gsm carriers in the states. I didn't use it abroad, but might be worthwhile to ask in their forums. The admin of that site "nodial" is an Android genius! Their app costs $35, and it won't add the lte bands, but if the lack of hassle is worth it to you, it couldn't hurt to ask him. He's on XDA also with the same nick. @Nodial, does your app do the APN fix abroad too?

Tmobile customer - Safe to buy Unlocked phones? New upcoming Tmo bands?

Sorry, I'm not too much in the know, but I heard there is some sort of new update coming in the near future that will improve various aspects of the S7 like better in building reception etc.
So what do I need to be on the look out for? This deal from Target is pretty fair on top of my 5% Red Card bonus. Would this phone work with whatever update Tmo pushes out to receive the full benefits vs a tmobile puchased S7?

Nope, your link is for the international version, which won't get VoLTE, wifi calling, or updates. You want either the 930T or 930u. Anything else won't work properly.
Edit for clarification - The upcoming changes for the S7 are for more advanced LTE functionality. The extended range/building penetration are already in place, it's Band 12 LTE. The international version you linked will receive data on this band, but you CANNOT call/sms on it, as it's a data only band. The only calling/SMS that can be done on it would be on VoLTE, which you will not have.
So yeah, you'd be getting a crippled phone with none of the advantages you want.
In the last week, the rom maker below got a Note 7 port working on a 930f with T-mobile VOLTE + wifi calling + video calling. Assuming you root and want custom roms, there is an viable option in the international model.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/development/rom-n7-rom-port-romcontrol-t3430358
That being said for the OP:
Why target, swappa is $200 less on either model.
The international model has no US warranty.
The international model is faster with a better battery life but is slighltly weaker playing games: having both for now, completely stock, the 930f is slightly faster feeling. On the other hand, it is like night and day to compare a custom/tweaked rom/kernel of a 930F to a engineering bootloader based 930t's stock rooted rom (the custom roms seem to remove video calls)
The US model (if root matters) has a root solution that can be negated in future builds.
The international model's root trips knox, unlike the US version, reducing the resale value.

Do OnePlus Phones Updates Require WiFi?

Hello, I would like to know if OnePlus phones get their updates via LTE or do they require WiFi?

Thanks in advance.

I think they will work without wifi, but you have to manually start the download yourself (it will not auto download, just tell you that an update is available). Not entirely sure about that though. If not you can always use the oxygen updater app (not official oneplus app!) to download the update over LTE and install it with the local upgrade option.

Thnx so much for taking the time to provide me with the info.
I hope the 9Pro is half decent because it sounds promising,
The 8T does not require WIFI to update...at least mine doesn't! I had the S20FE for awhile and it did not require WIFI either...I wonder why yours does? I also had the S10E and it DID need WIFI which was one of the reasons I dumped it! Personally I think it is NOT dependent on the phone, but rather on your wireless provider along with the particular phone.

T-Mobile Anyone Unable To Access Certain Websites

I have noticed this over the past several months and it is constant. Using multiple TMO Sims in multiple unlocked devices. Several websites will not respond when using cellular data. Those sites respond just fine when connected to WIFI on the same devices. Originally seemed to be a DNS issue but using T-Mobile DNS servers the sites seems to resolve correctly. Aside from not responding to web requests they also do not respond to ping either. My guess is that this has something to do with IPV6 but even when changing apn settings to strictly IPV4 the issue remains.
Do any other T-Mobile users have this issue? We have 1100 lines of service on several different unlocked devices all with the same issue. The easiest site to test this with is t-mobile themselves... T-Mobile.com will never respond when trying from cellular data. Also several MS Office online sites fail as well.

@stevecast2024,
Steve, I am on T-Mobile as well. Could you give me some specific sites you are having issues with ?
I would be happy to see if I am having similar issues on these sites.
Thanks my friend.
Sure. Thanks for the reply. Here are a few:
T-Mobile.com
Login.yahoo.com
wunderground.com
Sprint.com
The sites will simply time out. Work fine on wifi.
I also have noticed issues with some apps. For instance Zello, works most of the time but occasionally they shift login servers and we have to disable tls/ssl in the app in order for it to connect. Very odd. Unfortunately, that is a bit more difficult to troubleshoot.
Thanks
If you are on Android 10 and you have bootloader unlocked and rooted, then it might be Android 10 prohibiting you. I can't do anything on Firefox now.

I also have noticed issues with some apps. For instance Zello, works most of the time but occasionally they shift login servers and we have to disable tls/ssl in the app in order for it to connect. Very odd. Unfortunately, that is a bit more difficult to troubleshoot.
Thanks

OK @stevecast2024,
I have tried each of these 4 sites on:
1. A Windows 10 desktop using Chrome and connected using GB wired ethernet to a Cox cable modem.
and2. A T-Mobile branded OnePlus 8T (unrooted, bootloader locked) using Chrome and connected solely thru a T-Mobile 5G connection.
Note: both systems were connected using both ipv4 and ipv6
My results were as follows:
T-Mobile.com: Worked as expected on both systems
Login.yahoo.com: Worked as expected on both systems, however, the phone showed a more simplified interface compared to the desktop
wunderground.com: Worked as expected on both systems
Sprint.com: On both systems, redirected to T-Mobile.com, but then displayed a popup saying:
"Sprint has joined T-Mobile!
We're so glad you're here. If you're a Sprint customer, tap 'Continue' to access your account and more."
In short, I did not see any connectivity issues at all on these sites. I will continue to test these sites from different locations and at different times to see if I can recreate any of the issues you are seeing.
FYI: I am in Las Vegas and I have been VERY pleasantly surprised with the 5G coverage and bandwidth here so far.
May I ask where you are located ?

I'm really thinking it's this new BS with Android 10 and newer....

My phone has Android 11 and does not have issues with any of these sites. I wonder if it might have something to do with the 5G network upgrades in your area. Maybe a glitch was introduced in your area when the network was upgraded

Hmmm...I'd say you might just need to reflash the rom. If it still isn't working you then it might just be as simple as a defective phone.

Unfortunately, @stevecast2024 indicates he is seeing this issue on nearly 1000 devices of varying brands and android versions. That certainly doesn't sound like a defective phone
Thanks for testing. I'm on the east coast. Just outside of Philadelphia Pa. None of these devices support 5g but I wouldn't be surprised if the 5g upgrades may have something to do with the issue.
I will say I am beyond happy with the coverage we get from T-Mobile here. We bought the CAT S42 phones due to durability and their support of TMO LTE band 71 600mhz. The 600 mhz coverage is phenomenal.

Yes, before I had a 5G phone, my 4G LTE here was frequently band 71 and was also fast.
I was thinking, you could try connecting one of your phones to a PC and adb shell to the device.
You should then be able to try some command line DNS and/or TCP connections, narrowing down what is happening.
So yesterday our Sonim XP8s received an upgrade to Android 10. Now not only can we not access the specified websites and many others, but we can no longer use the ZelloWork application when on mobile data. As soon as wifi is turned off Zello disconnects and will not reconnect until wifi is turned back on. Errors in the Zello Log show Failed to read public key.
