[Q] Thinking about Picking up an M8 - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I have really only used moto phones in the past so bear with me.
1) Will I be able to ROM the M8?
2) What is the difficulty in ROMing the phone compared to a Moto w/ safestrap?
3) Is there an app similar to moto hotspot or can HTC phones only tether? Can it be unlocked?
4) How will the 3 above questions compare / contrast to an S5?
Thanks!
-Justin

You can't ROM the M8 yet as the boot loader isn't unlocked.
Don't really understand #3 but there is a Verizon hotspot app. And by unlocked do you mean to use on other carriers?
Can't really answer #4 because the S5 isn't out yet

You can Rom the Moto Phones with locked bootloaders, just with ROMs that are derived from the factory one, no CM etc. So the M8 will be similar in this regard? On another forum someone was telling me the selling point over the S5 was that the bootloader will be unlocked. So I guess this probably requires a GPE phone then, and isn't much of a selling point for me since I cant use a GPE phone on verizon...
By unlocked I mean free hotspot, the moto phones come with a motorolla hotspot which is quite easy to hack / unlock for use (the hotspot does not work otherwise without paying for it).
Some people do have their hands on the S5, but I guess I can assume it would be locked down similar to the S4. Are Samsung phones locked down any differently than the HTC Phones or are all companies locking the bootloader on verizon phones now?
Thanks,
Justin.

1) Eventually
2) Since we can't ROM it yet, we don't know
3) There's a thread about getting the built in tethering to work, look
4) How the hell would we know? The S5 isn't even out yet.

Yes, there's a hotspot app. The hotspot app isn't anything unique to any given manufacturer. It's a part of the Android OS.
The question is, can you use it or not without paying. If you don't have unlimited data it shouldn't cost you anything. If you have unlimited data you have to pay as of right now. There isn't any hack to disable the Verizon check at this time. Won't be until we get access to the system partition.

Interesting, again coming from motorolla:
Teathering = single device can connect.
Wifi hotspot = multiple devices can connect.
But that's the way it has been in the past with my moto phones so please forgive me since I guess this has changed.

Is the hotspot app called Mobile hotspot?
On my motorolla with root I can use dSQLiteManager and flip a bit in the com.motorolla.android.providers.settings DB and enable the free hotspot. If I lose this ability with HTC M8 I guess I will have to look into another motorolla phone. Or at least I will have to hold off for now.

It's the same app as Moto has. It's an Android thing. And, yes, it's called Mobile Hotspot. All phones I've had up until now were Motos. It's the same thing.
However, like I said before, there is no hack for it yet. One of the first things I did when we got root was check for the entitlement check thing using sqlite and that entry isn't there anymore. From what I can find, it sounds like the newer Moto phones don't have it either. I did come across a hack for the M7 which involves editing an xml file but haven't tried it. My guess is you'd have to reboot to get it to take effect and given the way root works on this phone, the change wouldn't stick after you rebooted the phone.
USB tethering works fine though. However, if the hotspot is a must for you, you better wait or else plan on paying for it, at least for a while.

I mostly use it with my Android Nook HD+, so I don't think USB tether would work, but that's not worth $30 a month to simply use a larger screen. I would assume if there is no hack for the M7 their probably will not be for the M8 then. Thanks for everyones help.

There is one for the M7.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699200

Well, that might or might not help. If the Nook can't see an adhoc network, it's no good in this case. I have a Xoom that wouldn't see one when it was stock. A lot of devices require infrastructure mode which the hotspot is. The Nook may or may not support adhoc. But like I said, some devices require it (infrastructure). I have a laptop that doesn't work with adhoc mode. So, it's not just related to mobile devices.

FoxFi Free Tethering App

I tried to download this but I got a message saying my carrier (at&t) doesn't support this app.
Is anyone able to use it on the AT&T One X or know of a similar app?
Or do I just have to download one of the available mods in the dev section?

Install MarketAccess. This app allows you to spoof other carrier markets. Spoofing T-Mobile 310260 should pretty much give you full market access.

No go for mine
I know this is an old thread but I'll try anything at this point. I've tried a bunch of stuff so far. I've downloaded a .apk that was supposed to remove ATT's block on the tethering which didn't work. I then tried to install CM10 which goes through all the install motions in TWRP and reboots. After reboot it sits on the CM logo forever never booting into CM10 so I had to restore it to stock. I've tried apps in the market and of course the Att lock blocks them as well. So I figured I'd try this one and it doesn't work on my HOX either.
All I can say is that ATT and/OR HTC have got this tethering thing all locked down this time. I had no problems installing CM or getting the hotspot unlocked on all my previous devices... Kinda regretting getting this HOX now. hotspot worked great on my Inspire and my HD2
I tried to install the FoxFi from the market but nothing showed up in the search results so I downloaded that market spoof which allowed FoxFI to showup..... Installed FoxFi and it activates the hotspot but when I try to connect with my Laptop it says it cant connect.
We are in a unique situation here and not really sure what to do to get my phone to act as a hotspot. Very Frustrating!
The Aluminum skin on our coach blocks most if not all campground wifi signals from coming in, yet my phone still has a good signal so I figured I could just use my phone as the device to get online while inside the coach. Can't sit outside at night, the skeeters will carry you off. Rains most of the day so it makes it very difficult to get online.
We've been with ATT for so long that the geico caveman is going to join ATT so we do not want to change our plan in anyway.. (We're grandfathered into a really old plan from like 7 years ago that is $40 a month...This new plan they want to sell us is $200 a month with the hotspot built in..... wowzers!
Any suggestions?

root your device, download sql editor lite and open, vendorsettings->settings.db and find entitlement check in that long list.. once you find it, change its value from 1 to 0.. now you can use tether..

[Q] T-Mobile Xperia Z3 Tethering - D6616 - No Root options

Does your T-Mobile plan include tethering? @lowfatcreamcheese
My plan does not include tethering.
Same situation here... Did you find a way to do it?
Am always on the go cause of work and school so WiFi tether is a must for me.
I think root is the only way you're going to have wifi tethering. I really like the phone but between QC issues and losing some root options like tethering I'm starting to wonder if I should have stuck with the galaxy line.
Okay guess am not getting it... I have the LG g3 and I was thinking of getting the z3 but WiFi tether is very important for. Thanks for me. Thanks for the reply

On the T mobile firmware, when you start the hotspot it checks for a brief second your account so some system app tells t mobile you're enabling it.
On my previous T mobile Xperia Z I used a generic firmware so the hotspot worked no matter if you have the hotspot service or not.
On my t mobile Z3 I have hotspot service so the tether works great via wifi, bluetooth or usb.
Typed on my Xperia Z3 while underwater.
I guess it's going to be moot in a month or so. TMobile sent me a postcard, looks like they're getting rid of grandfathered plans. I believe all plans minus maybe the prepaid ones have tethering now.

Probably wont know till we actually get the phone but I have heard FoxFi works for non rooted phones
bump +1
I believe wifi tether is Root only
This is probably the most important questions for me also. I still have unlimited data and use wifi tethering every day.
If we can get Foxfi, then I might actually get this phone. WiFi tethering with my unlimited plan is really my only "must have" for root.

I can confirm FoxFi works on a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6. It worked the first time I tried it, exactly the same steps as on an HTC Droid DNA (create certificate - one time procedure, enable security protection e.g. screen lock; I used the S6's fingerprint reader - one time procedure, turn on Hot Spot in settings menu - repeat procedure, and voila).
Cheers.

I can confirm that FoxFi works also.

5. Profit.
EDIT: I am on a grandfathered unlimited data plan through Verizon.

Yes I am on an unlimited data plan, sorry forgot to mention that. I'll edit my original message.
I'm on a UDP and can also confirm Foxfi works as it always does.
Does FoxFi work alright on a non-rooted S6 with the latest firmware?
I see that all these posts are from April or earlier....can somebody please confirm to me that this still works? That you can wirelessly tether to your heart's content on the S6 NON-rooted via Foxfi? I want to get the S6 but since the latest firmware can't be rooted I would be screwed UNLESS this still works....then I can look past not being rooted....at least for now.
I tether everyday for work and I am on unlimited data and my S3 is getting a tad.....old.

Do you have the free version or paid version of it? When you first installed it on your s6 did it ask you for a credentials password? I went to install it on my S3 to test it and it asked me for that and I have no clue what that was and couldn't get past that.....
Paid version and yes you have to do credentials. But with s6 if you have finger print unlock set up your all good to go.

So you are on the "AOF1" firmware and it works fine everyday, correct? I am just paranoid that I will get the S6 and then it will not work for me. I have to have working tethering for my work and I'm not about to pay Verizon more $.

I currently have the the stock version (5.02) on my Verizon Galaxy S6 and I'm affraid to do the software update. I'm currently using Foxfi with no problems, however I'd like to do the software update. But.... I'm hearing Foxfi may not work with the software update for those who have unlimited data with Verizon.
So I have two questions:
1) What android version are you currently running?
2) And, do you have unlimited data?

Disable Carrier Tether Check - Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan

Hi guys, I am still on original Verizon unlimited plan rocking my trusty Nexus 6P. I am thinking about upgrading to Pixel 3XL if I can get tethering working.
Is it likely that we will be able to disable Verizon tether check? I don't have to do anything on my 6P and and I am happy with stock image.
Anyone here on gUDP tethering with Pixel 3XL?
Thanks Charles
You can do it, but you'll need to be rooted and be able to edit the build.prop file.
If you purchase the phone from Google, it's pretty easy. However, I am assuming you will probably buy from Verizon. There;s nothing wrong with purchasing from Big Red. However, rooting the VZW variant will be extremely difficult unless an exploit is discovered.
Build.prop add: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Done and done.
Requires root, text editor and save.
Reboot and your golden.

Man how much do they have you guys paying on that now? Think my bill was like $120 a month. Ended up being so much cheaper just getting internet service at my place and adding my line to my family's plan, just paying them. We still have tethering. "Unlimited" but I think they slow you down after you reach a certain amount of data. Haven't noticed that. It's been fine for the occasional use when not home. Plus the speed increase with cable or fiber, Verizon doesn't compare.
When there's a plan that allows me to use 40GB with my phone as hotspot without slowing me down I might consider switching plans. I have fast internet in the house so that's not a problem. Right now there is no other plan that would work for me.

The build.prop mod should still work, but there's a second step in adding the settings put global tether_dun_required 0. See my post here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3-xl/how-to/how-to-native-tethering-rooted-pixel-3-t3858662

I'd love the pixel 3 but how easy is it to root and to the build.prop edit? I used to do this stuff a while ago but I bricked my a vzw s7edge a few months ago and am scared now lol.

They are both incredibly easy to do and there's multiple guides and probably some video guides on how to root. Once you root you need a build prop editor add the following line net.tethering.noprovisioning=true reboot and profit. will this same method work on the regular pixel 3?

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro Verizon hotspot?

Hi, I'm looking at buying a unlocked xcover pro and using it on the Verizon network. I can't really find much info on this phone. It looks like they are 100% unlocked(not sure on the Verizon variant) and you can unlock the bootloader right from settings.
My question/dilemma is will Verizon block my hotspot on the device as I do not pay for the subscription. I am on the old unlimited grandfather plan and have been using the hotspot for wifi for years as I travel a lot for work.
I'd also like to know if it's possible to install a custom Rom on this, and if so which one? I've been looking but there's nothing I can find specific to this phone and I'm pretty inexperienced with this stuff.
I currently use a verizon lg v20 that has been unlocked with custom Rom/firmware and I was able to get around the subscription hotspot lock with it.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Small world. I am also considering the Xcover Pro and currently running the V20 with a custom ROM.
Looking forward to replies to this post.

I just got the phone today....got it powered on, turned on hotspot right away. It seemed to be working fine. Got a bunch of apps installed and stuff and was streaming videos on my laptop. After a good hour or so I got disconnected. Re-connected and got the verizon hotspot verification error. Well ****....
Went to check out how to unlock the bootloader and the OEM unlock option is missing in the dev options like everywhere online says it will be.
Had to run to town. now im back and just went to try hopspot again and its been working a good 20 minutes or so. Im typing this on my laptop that is connected to the hotspot, but im pretty sure I will get knocked off again. Not sure what to do now.

I dont know what would happen if I updated the OS on it, but I'm not going to try it. Hope this helps any1 looking to buy one of these. I really like the phone.
