Apps blocked in the Android Market by AT&T

I know that AT&T blocks customers from seeing certain apps in the market. I tried searching. Is there a list of these apps somewhere or does anyone the specific type? I know tethering apps are one area they want to keep us away from.

Dont know if this still works but it did ....... Turn your wifi off, put phone in airplane mode, then turn your wifi back on (leave phone in airplane mode so your not connected to the ATT network) and the ATT blocked apps will show up.

Couldn't you just take you SIM card out? Using WIFI to connect to the market ofcourse

So based upon what I'm reading, the only apps being blocked by AT&T are tethering apps?

No there are a few others that are blocked. Some music apps, video apps and such.

I tried pushing Amazon App Store to my phone today, downloaded the file fine from the text from Amazon. Once I tried to load the file from my downloaded folder on my phone, I got the AT&T blocked from apps other than Market message...

If you have the adb installed you can side load it its how I have swype on my inspire and teamviewer most of the apps I use I had.to side load like that

I got Swype installed as well and I love it.

I think AT&T is able to tell if you are tethering. Which is what they also did with Jailbroken iPhones. So be careful not to get the plan added on automatically if they find out.

What plan are you talking about... The $25 2g... There is a way around the the spying of ATT... Just flash a non inspire base Rom.. like any of the 2.3 roms will work

Seems like its much easier to activate airplane mode, than to remove the sim card.

Just be careful when tethering, even if you check usage you can still go over and not know it! AT&T can tell by data usage as well. I agree on the Non Inspire 2.3.3 ROMs

Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me with my friends inspire at&t, they want to get wifi tethering and also unlimited data usage , (don't we all) can someone help me with this...
I have a Evo rooted myself but need help on Rooting the Inspire and putting a good rom on it...

Under Settings>Applications, check the Unknown Sources box or whatever it has that mentions untrusted/unknown sources.

As for the unlimited data, no idea. There was a thread here about using an iPhone 2g but I'm not sure how valid it is.

[Q] Direct carrier billing

non-rooted my touch 4g slide.
The option to direct carrier bill t-mobile is not an option. Is this affecting anyone else's market?
also I upgraded her market to 3.3.12 and tried but still no DC billing. really don't want to do the credit card option.
I have it on my phone (see sig), but mine is rooted and I didn't buy any apps before I rooted.

I've always seen carrier billing as an option, even now I just checked.
I refuse to use it, though - I always use gift cards. The visa-vanilla ones are my preference, they are designed for online purchase and set-up is a snap.
I don't like the idea of using a real credit card, and attaching to my carrier bill is a headache I don't want to deal with.
Just a thought that may help ya out.

I haven't been able to get carrier billing working on mine either, I've tried both with stock non-rooted, rooted stock, and finally with bulletproof 1.0. In all the roms I had tried both old and new design of market. I've heard rumors that clearing data for market and starting the market with wifi off and 3G/4g connection (not 2G). So far that process hasn't worked for me.

Not true about the primary. I can go on any of my 5 lines right now and get direct carrier billing. I just checked on my g/fs phone and my business phone.

I had same prob but I fixed
1. Clear cache in recovery (if not rooted clear market data in system/applications/etc.)
2. reboot
3. start market with wifi connected but mobile network turned on
4. goto paid app checkout and direct carrier billing should appear every time

you might also try changing your settings with t-mobile... Make sure you don't have a block on downloads and what not.

I forgot to ask, what market are you all on? I just tried the stock market that comes on the phone (2.3.4) and the above worked.....so then I updated to 3.3.12 and the above method does not work.....

I downgraded to 2.3.6 still didn't have carrier billing, but was able to force it by editing the billing database with sqleditor. There are a couple fields that need to be changed from false to true. I've been doing that for a year now, but the new market doesn't use those databases anymore.

For a year? I guess you have another phone model? As the doubleshot has only been out for about 5 months....
And now I can't get direct billing on either version of the market.....clearing and rebooting worked once for the old version but now only c.c. comes up, so effin frustrating.
May endup doing like we do for the PS3,(like above) just get a rechargeable visa or something....

I honestly can't say. I upgraded her market to 3.3.12 andthen downgraded it like 5 times in a row trying to get it to work.....left it on the stock market (2.3.6).
She went on the internet android market on the phone and it showed up there, so she checked her app and it wws there too, then.

[Q] Help with Roms and PS3 Tethering

Hey Yall, long time XDA follower and user (HTC Shadow2007), first time "really" posting.
I, for the love of GOD, cannot find out just why I'm not able to use any of my rom's built in tethering for my T-Mobile branded Sensation 4G. I been reading up on T-Mobile US's hidden APN on their network which disable's certain traffics. (Yes I know about spoofing UA Strings for desktops/laptops but this seems to be different, like they are disabling my connection to the PS3 only. In other words, it will find the AP (not ad-hoc) and but not allow for an internet connection.
Lately, I've been switching between CM9 stable(main) and Elegancis (Blitz_3.0.0) roms. I haven't superCID'd but I didn't think that it would've mattered because I don't think that I'm using an non-T-Mobile US build (it wouldn't work either way).
I wanted to stick it CM9 but for whatever reason it would allow me to update some market apps so for that reason and well as the tethering issue I've switched to Blitz's rom.
My kernel version may actually be outdated (even thought I don't think so)

The first flashing that I did was Revolutionary HD 6.6.7 (i think). It worked fine but had problems as well (not perfect ). I want to change my data plan to the T-Mobile nationwide unlimited 4G plan and save me $35 buck a month to tether my PS3 to my phone. (I can do it now.) To test to see if the rom would allow me access to tethering to my PS3, I switched my wife's sim card and mine to simulate the plan and the phone without having the plan active on my account and it's a no go. I switch the sim cards back, it works just fine. Now she can tether via her phone and via mine (if sim cards are switched) to multiple computers and to the wii.
IF ANYONE HAS THE ABILITY TO HELP, PLEASE PLEASE DO! :crying:

Well it worked one time a week ago with my wife's sim with WPA2. Since then I had already reverted back to CM9 which was my main rom until ... yesterday when I went through the process of putting all the applications from titanium backup on blitz's rom. I was going to change my plan till tomorrow from the $65 10GB tethering (before work discounts) to the $30 Unlimited Internet (before work discounts). I can try it with it being "open" later today but, i honestly don't think that its the problem because when I use my SIM card (the one with tethering enabled by T-Mobile) it connects with or without encryption.
Any ideas? Any roms that you know of that have wifi hotspot (not ad-hoc only) enabled by default? I looked into Grogg88 solution but, at this time it looks to be enabled in Elegancis' roms now anyway or am I missing something?!

I have always tethered my tablet to my phone.
It worked both open and secure on Sense ROMS.
When I switched to CM 10, I could only connect with open. (but ,at least it works,which is all I care about )
I have not tried anything like a PS3,so ,I do not know what else to suggest.
Have you tried an app from the market?

I understand! I have tried barnacle, wifi tether beta 3.2 (having trouble even getting to work), um... foxfi with and without additional supplimentary application, none of those actually give an Access Point, none ad-hoc (which the PS3 can only connect to). Hell I even have try usb to computer tethering (via bluetooth, wifi, and wired connections), create a computer "MiFi" hotspot and tried to get my PS3 to connect to that Access Point to no avail. Like I said though, all is good with my sim card but if I use my wife's which has Unlimited Nationwide 4G data service to test her data feature on my phone, past that 1st time I tried it with Blitz's rom last week... and the 2nd/last time I tried... this morning... its a no go.
I don't know what they are blocking my PS3... can they see its MAC address!? I can't imagine that the can really "see" it? Everything else works just fine on her phone tethering to it. Desktops, laptops, tablets,.... my 4 year old son's wii! IDk
I just want to not worry about data shortages (going over 10GB limit) and play Borderlands 2.... GOD IS THAT SO WRONG.
PS. I'm switching home internet providing... that one I had sucked (great speeds60mbps, too high $65-70monthly)... but I'm waiting for a deal in the area.
I'll try open though later. If you know anyone else to ask... tell them to please come to this thread!

I have really only used moto phones in the past so bear with me.
1) Will I be able to ROM the M8?
2) What is the difficulty in ROMing the phone compared to a Moto w/ safestrap?
3) Is there an app similar to moto hotspot or can HTC phones only tether? Can it be unlocked?
4) How will the 3 above questions compare / contrast to an S5?

You can't ROM the M8 yet as the boot loader isn't unlocked.
Don't really understand #3 but there is a Verizon hotspot app. And by unlocked do you mean to use on other carriers?

You can Rom the Moto Phones with locked bootloaders, just with ROMs that are derived from the factory one, no CM etc. So the M8 will be similar in this regard? On another forum someone was telling me the selling point over the S5 was that the bootloader will be unlocked. So I guess this probably requires a GPE phone then, and isn't much of a selling point for me since I cant use a GPE phone on verizon...
By unlocked I mean free hotspot, the moto phones come with a motorolla hotspot which is quite easy to hack / unlock for use (the hotspot does not work otherwise without paying for it).
Some people do have their hands on the S5, but I guess I can assume it would be locked down similar to the S4. Are Samsung phones locked down any differently than the HTC Phones or are all companies locking the bootloader on verizon phones now?

Tethering is not the same as hotspot though... So is there a tethering app or a hotspot app?

Yes, there's a hotspot app. The hotspot app isn't anything unique to any given manufacturer. It's a part of the Android OS.
The question is, can you use it or not without paying. If you don't have unlimited data it shouldn't cost you anything. If you have unlimited data you have to pay as of right now. There isn't any hack to disable the Verizon check at this time. Won't be until we get access to the system partition.

Interesting, again coming from motorolla:
Teathering = single device can connect.
Wifi hotspot = multiple devices can connect.
But that's the way it has been in the past with my moto phones so please forgive me since I guess this has changed.

Is the hotspot app called Mobile hotspot?
On my motorolla with root I can use dSQLiteManager and flip a bit in the com.motorolla.android.providers.settings DB and enable the free hotspot. If I lose this ability with HTC M8 I guess I will have to look into another motorolla phone. Or at least I will have to hold off for now.

It's the same app as Moto has. It's an Android thing. And, yes, it's called Mobile Hotspot. All phones I've had up until now were Motos. It's the same thing.
However, like I said before, there is no hack for it yet. One of the first things I did when we got root was check for the entitlement check thing using sqlite and that entry isn't there anymore. From what I can find, it sounds like the newer Moto phones don't have it either. I did come across a hack for the M7 which involves editing an xml file but haven't tried it. My guess is you'd have to reboot to get it to take effect and given the way root works on this phone, the change wouldn't stick after you rebooted the phone.
USB tethering works fine though. However, if the hotspot is a must for you, you better wait or else plan on paying for it, at least for a while.

I mostly use it with my Android Nook HD+, so I don't think USB tether would work, but that's not worth $30 a month to simply use a larger screen. I would assume if there is no hack for the M7 their probably will not be for the M8 then. Thanks for everyones help.

Well, that might or might not help. If the Nook can't see an adhoc network, it's no good in this case. I have a Xoom that wouldn't see one when it was stock. A lot of devices require infrastructure mode which the hotspot is. The Nook may or may not support adhoc. But like I said, some devices require it (infrastructure). I have a laptop that doesn't work with adhoc mode. So, it's not just related to mobile devices.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro Verizon hotspot?

Hi, I'm looking at buying a unlocked xcover pro and using it on the Verizon network. I can't really find much info on this phone. It looks like they are 100% unlocked(not sure on the Verizon variant) and you can unlock the bootloader right from settings.
My question/dilemma is will Verizon block my hotspot on the device as I do not pay for the subscription. I am on the old unlimited grandfather plan and have been using the hotspot for wifi for years as I travel a lot for work.
I'd also like to know if it's possible to install a custom Rom on this, and if so which one? I've been looking but there's nothing I can find specific to this phone and I'm pretty inexperienced with this stuff.
I currently use a verizon lg v20 that has been unlocked with custom Rom/firmware and I was able to get around the subscription hotspot lock with it.

I just got the phone today....got it powered on, turned on hotspot right away. It seemed to be working fine. Got a bunch of apps installed and stuff and was streaming videos on my laptop. After a good hour or so I got disconnected. Re-connected and got the verizon hotspot verification error. Well ****....
Went to check out how to unlock the bootloader and the OEM unlock option is missing in the dev options like everywhere online says it will be.
Had to run to town. now im back and just went to try hopspot again and its been working a good 20 minutes or so. Im typing this on my laptop that is connected to the hotspot, but im pretty sure I will get knocked off again. Not sure what to do now.

Were you ever able to get the hotspot working?

Yeah. Been using this for about a month now. Have not updated the OS on it yet. Only had the issue 1 time where it asked for a Verizon subscription and then I rebooted a few times and has been working since. I use it every day.
I dont know what would happen if I updated the OS on it, but I'm not going to try it. Hope this helps any1 looking to buy one of these. I really like the phone.
