What is the communities views on this? Should I Root or stay stock?
I used to root every android phone I buy but, not this one. Rooting method got a little complicated after project trouble. I even bricked my phone twice. Also there's no game changing benifits of rooting this phone. Stock os is perfect.

Rooting is dead simple and I came from nexus/pixel phones where it was just as easy.
Personally, I'm always going to root for some features I get from EdXposed, but mainly for substratum and custom kernel.

My 7 Pro has been rooted from day one.
I rooted right out of the box, can take update and I'm running Xposed and Gravity Box.
Rooting requires booting with the correct twrp boot image.
You then flash Magic and boot.
Once booted you flash the twrp zip, then Magisk again.
No issues.
There are threads here for both.

is there a way that i can root my thunderbolt without having to wipe it clean? everything i seem to find sayes that it will be complete wipe.
Nope. you can try and back up as much as possible but a total wipe is required.
In time is it possible to have a true one click root to root the phone. I am still learning everything it takes to do a root and this phone seems more difficult then some other phones. My buddy just rooted his fasinate, and it was easy as can be.

It's possible that there might be a 1 click that wont have to wipe data. But unfortunately to exploit the backdoor that allows root currently you need to revert to an old RUU.
What are you worried about regarding having to do a complete wipe?
I do full wipes all the time. Whenever I switch a ROM or even upgrade a ROM I do a complete wipe. What is it you're worried about losing.

Very smart. Once you get the root fever though...
The Thunderbolt was my first Android as well and I did the same thing you did and made sure I had as much knowledge as I could before I rooted. I used the root on mac walk through and it worked perfect. Now I am flashing roms and kernals like it is going out of style. I even bricked the phone loading a rom the wrong way but with the knowledge I gained using bootloader to root it was an easy fix. Once you get the hang of it, it gets really easy.

Well that's good to know thats what I will be doing over the weekend. I have everything backed up and apps really don't matter. I just want to have more control over my phone. But I don't know if I want to wait a little longer till more roots are out or what. I really like this phone, and it becoming a brick does not sound fun

Same here. Just wiped to load ROM Update.
There is alot of apps out there that will backup all your data without being rooting

There won't be any more "roots" that will come out. They are all done the same way. The only way you will get support is by doing it the manual way. Using a 1-click is more dangerous than doing it the manual way. (no one knows when/if unrevoked will come out with one for this phone) I highly suggest doing it the manual way.
Great to hear someone say that they are reading up and learning about it before they do it. We are finally getting some smart people to this forum

You didn't brick it...that would mean no possible recovery.

I came from windows mobile and so I also was averse to wiping cause it takes so long to setup thephone again..but not on android.titanium backup is awesome and can restore you back to normal super fast. dont fear the full wipe

thanks everyone
it took a long time
went to youtube to get all the videos on rooting
here is the link for anyone who wants it. it will help step by step to root the thunderbolt.
forgot to put the links in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKPSe12YDxQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc6EMdPpF6o&feature=related
i came from a blackberry where there was no backing up and no playing around uner the hood. this left me very scared to rooted my thunderbolt but after two weeks of owning it i made the jump and did the easy root took a little bit of time but worked great now i jsut need to convince myself to flash a new ROM
you only have to wipe and lose everything the initial time of rooting. after that point, you can backup everything when you want to switch ROMs and try things out. so you only lose stuff the first time.
I am very new to the android world. my question is about the version of Lite'ning rom I should use?? My understanding is that I need not to have a rooted phone to use this? Good mine ain't rooted. Here is a pic of everything I think will help.View attachment 837063 Sorry about my literacy or lack of it.
You have to be rooted to run any custom rom.
download SuperOneClick and root your device, then install the ROM.
I'm actually scared to root because of the 'bricking' thing. I know nothing about this stuff. Will I mess up?? what to do after, if successful, etc.
Do the research. You can't run a custom rom if your not rooted. If it worries you so much maybe you should stay stock. Custom roms are not for everyone. There are risks and there are bugs that dev try to fix but each device is different and if bugs happen you need to be able to find and work out fixes for it.
Those that just root and flash without knowing what they are doing are bound to be mad when they brick their device.
Rooting is pretty easy but I would avoid flashing a new rom if your worried about rooting as it is more difficult and you need to be very sure what your doing first.

You mean i can root my phone and keep the stock rom?? The reason for me wanting to do this is the Bloatware that is installed on it. Will I be able to get rid of them??

Yes just root the device and buy Titaium back up pro and you all good to go.
You can do it without TIBU pro but it just makes it easier
Hi everyone, I used to love rooting and installing new ROMs about 4 years ago, back when most apps would work with no trouble.
I'm looking to get into it again, but after hearing apps like snapchat don't work, it's making me think it's not worth it. I use snapchat for business purposes, so it's pretty important to me personally.
Is their a way i can successfully root and install a ROM on my device while being able to use EVERY app (banking, snapchat etc) without no problems on the HTC U11?
U11 user only, thank you
First would be to unlock bootloader from HTCdev.com
Once you unlock, install the latest TWRP recovery. Then your ROM of choice. All are pretty much rooted and easiest is with Magisk root. I don't anything about SnapChat not working on custom ROM. It works as do many apps while rooted.
Magisk Root has Magisk Hide which hides root status in any App you need. Android Pay, Bank Apps. I don't hide Snapchat from Root and it works.

For U11... https://twrp.me/htc/htcu11.html
Bootloader must be unlocked, then use fastboot or twrp manager

Thank you so very much!!!
I was just looking over the instructions for the bootloader, holy cow that is very involved. I don't remember it being that hard not do. i guess i won't be rooting today. but thank you again.
I only picked up my NP last week and after a couple of days it updated to 8.0 / Oreo, So all my research and prep for a root & flash has been thrown up in the air.
Are there any major changes anyone knows of that might make rooting, custom bootloader & rom flash problematic?
i did really like the old leanback launcher UI and the update is way too fussy for my liking, and i'm not even going to comment on the lack of catch-up content for UK users. If ever a device needed hacking, this is the one.
cheers in advance
Honestly im pretty sure you could just flash magisk through twrp with the 8.0 zip. Im pretty sure it would work
thanks for the reply, i'm dithering as i'd hate to lose the chromecast feature and have yet to find a rom which has it mastered and working.

Magisk root and TWRP work just fine. You won't lose any functionality, but that's with the stock images.
Is there a way to get back without a computer? I lost root after the forced update. Think I'm still unlocked boot loader got the icon at boot up but have no twrp recovery anymore or root sadly I miss 7.1.2 after the update it crapped the nexus player
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I don't believe so. You'll need a computer to run adb to downgrade.
An easier method is to use the Nexus Root Toolkit which will input all the commands for you. You just point and click.
I ported twrp for the Asus Zenfone max plus m1.However I don't have experience on how to test it or if I did flash it,how to restores stock recovery so I haven't tested it yet.I would like some people to test it for me.After or if it is successful and I get confidence in porting these things I might try to port a rom or too for our device.or try to port a kernel.as our current kernel is kind of old.
Hi, i would love to test it.
But still can't root it after Oreo update, even with the tool provided by Asus .
Tried kingroot also didn't support.
I could test it. Although, I really need a method of root first.
Anyone knows a method in which you could root it without a custom recovery? And yes, I've heard of Magisk, but I'd rather avoid that until it's the last option. Thanks!

Wait why do you need root to install a custom recovery in the first place? I haven't tested the twrp file I made and also I lost it, so I might have to recreate it. Sorry for not being active for awhile, I was busy with school

Sorry for the long period of inactivity
I've been away from xda for awhile sorry y'all. I had to focus on studies and I didn't check xda for a bit. I can't seem to find the twrp file that I ported with a online method. I never tested it, and it's likely it wouldn't have worked as the previous post shows. Someone has built twrp for our device. Bless them. As for the root question. It's possible to unlock bootloader on our Asus Zenfone max plus m1 and then use the patch boot image method by extracting the boot IMG from the firmware and then patching it with the magisk apk/ app and flashing it with fastboot flash boot patched_boot.im.
