I only picked up my NP last week and after a couple of days it updated to 8.0 / Oreo, So all my research and prep for a root & flash has been thrown up in the air.
Are there any major changes anyone knows of that might make rooting, custom bootloader & rom flash problematic?
i did really like the old leanback launcher UI and the update is way too fussy for my liking, and i'm not even going to comment on the lack of catch-up content for UK users. If ever a device needed hacking, this is the one.

Honestly im pretty sure you could just flash magisk through twrp with the 8.0 zip. Im pretty sure it would work

Magisk root and TWRP work just fine. You won't lose any functionality, but that's with the stock images.
Is there a way to get back without a computer? I lost root after the forced update. Think I'm still unlocked boot loader got the icon at boot up but have no twrp recovery anymore or root sadly I miss 7.1.2 after the update it crapped the nexus player

I don't believe so. You'll need a computer to run adb to downgrade.
An easier method is to use the Nexus Root Toolkit which will input all the commands for you. You just point and click.

Hey everyone. I was wondering if some here with a HTC One can point me in the right direction. I am looking to finally take the plunge and permanently root, flash a custom recovery, backup my stock, and install a new custom rom on my Verizon M8.
This is my first HTC device playing with, I have always had Motorola stuff and am pretty familiar with the process on those, but this HTC stuff is still a little blurry. S-on/off, CID, MID, RUUs????
I have been reading these forums for quite a bit and still a little unsure about what the steps would have to be. I am currently on the latest stock VZW temp rooted with the new weeksauce basically just to have tethering via a 3rd party app (Wifi tether router). I actually really, really like the stock Sense 6.0 UI and this phone is pretty much perfect all around.
What I want to do is, permanently root, install TWRP as that's what i've used on Moto and my Sammy Tab, backup my stock system so I can go back, and then install a custom ROM. Can TWRP on this do more than one ROM slot and run dual roms? What if everything gets jacked up and I have to go back to complete out of the box stock? How is that done with HTC? I think with Moto it was like an .FXZ file or something like that and you boot the phone into download mode and just flash that file from the computer and you're back to 100% stock. Same with Samsung using ODIN.
I'm also not sure what ROM I want to try, so I am open to suggestions there too. I would like to maybe try a pretty clean Lollipop ROM with good battery life and very stable. Would that be the GPE?

First you need s-off/unlocked boot loader to perma root..also there is multi ROM support for this device. An if you want to return to pure stock cause something got messed up then you download the ruu an use fast boot via pc to flash your ruu.zip it will wipe your whole phone an return you to out of the box. if your looking for a sense Lollipop from. Santod has a nice ROM an you can also check out the ROM by andybones is also runs very nice an has themes an mod support. If you like GPE then there is one of those also for our device.

And also, as I understand it, the Sunshine method of achieving the two may or may not work on 4.4.4 either, kind of a 50/50 shot??? So I guess at this time it might just be worth it to wait until either the new sunshine is released or Verizon pushed the 5.0 update out and see what that is like.

Firewater is dead....sunshine might work you can download the app for free an run it to see if it will work with your device is free too. Then if you want to run sunshine that's when you pay the 25...so I would advice against taking anymore ota till you r able to s-off.
Just goot this device rooted! Just gonna test the script a few times so there isent any bugs and i will upload it!
EDIT: Systemless Root methods like Magisk resets after root(I Think SuperSu works if u tweak dm-verity in the kernel). But using system-root both breaks saftynet and is boring
So im gonna try to edit the boot img to work with magisk or SuperSU even if the bootloader is locked.
If none of theese things works there is a way to Re-root after each reboot but its ofc much easyer just to edit the boot.img or unlock the BL
EDIT 2: I will also try to reverse engineer the bootloader to try to find a weak point where we can unlock it, for easyer rooting and creating custom roms
EDIT 3: Also forgot to mention xposed works because you dont "need" root. If anyone want xposed just reply in the thread and il upload the script "as is" even though it resets after each reboot, but root works perfect have tested multiple apps.
And as i said before, before i release the root method publicly i want to check if its the BL who "resets" the kernel like on some HTC devices or if its a simple dm-verity problem , if it is the dm-verity thing its easy to fix.

There must be another way to get a rooted ASUS P027. I tried much but don't have any success. I think that there is a way to push some files manually to /data/local/tmp. Setting right permissions using adb. Finally executing a root-shell-script from one of many should do the rest. Problem is not to get the files inside the system, you have to do it again after each reboot.
I'm a bit nervous to modify bootloaders and flash them on the go with no oem support. If some support for this device comes available from ASUS it should be a lot easyer to do.
I cant upload photo's till i'm no longer seem like a robot. I also got some kind of root on my P027. only for a moment. After reboot it is gone.
I can't wait for that!

I bought the ASUS Zenpad 3S 10 [P027] off Amazon on Saturday on a flash sale for $265, knowing it didn't have root, and that's a shame because it's a beautiful & buttery smooth tablet.
Today, as I was pondering boxing it up for a return, I figured I'd look for myself once more for the hell-of-it, AND BOOM! I found this thread!
So where are we guys? I'll test it for ya or whatever! So friggin' pumped ROOT has been established! Dare I say -Vanilla Oreo ROM with onscreen softkeys??? YEAH!
Really looking forward to this! I don't mind getting my hands dirty, but just waiting for the script I'm very happy to have stumbled upon this thread, can't wait to have root on this tablet!!
Fortunately we will get to see the script. I own the P027 since auust 17. A very good hardware. But without root its only worth half. So, me too is awaiting the script but so far I guess we still have to wait. Til now, no root app works (iRoot, Kingo, e.g.) Very sad because I think that once we rooted it and get rid of all the OEM bloatware, this tab may rocks a lot more.

I got root and xposed. But I don't have a way to get it in that device
At my next post will I upload a photo or link of my own (semi) rooted P027. The Magic of rooting a device which is unsupported is far away from easy as flashing chainfire's zips or something possible using Odin or what. Most likely if there was a custom recovery for the P027 root would be easy because of all possibilities you have.
I've tried a lot of other ways to get in to try modify something in that locked system. It is hard to get there without losing patients! I also lose social networks I belong to. Even if days counts 48 hour instead of 24, root wasn't there with the success I had hope to. Sometimes only after manually redirecting some files with adb and manually setting right permissions to every file. It becomes possible to get accessing "su" in terminal app. Only sometimes, after each modifying something, you're device needs to reboot for applying that modification. At that point you lose everything before you can use it.
If someone can post latest boot.img I will try to patch it with Magisk. If that is possible it will get easier to activate systemless xposed. A few weeks ago on note 8 launch day... It took at least 1 hell of a day before root came available on xda. Also twrp and custom roms are available.
Hope soon to make it happening for real.

You know, after you rooted your cell phone, you will lose the warranty on your cell phone.
With Odin Install official TWRP 3.2.3-0. In TWRP > Wipe>"Format Data" and follow the instructions in screen. After you flash latest "no-verity-opt-encrypt zip" and "RMM Bypass zip". Reboot System.
In TWRP flash MCK-Oreo_AB_BRI1_v2.0.1.zip kernel.
In TWRP flash Magisk 17.1 or Magisk 17.3 Beta. Reboot System.
After Reboot System, you install Magisk Manager 6.0.1.

If your phone has already TWRP installed and it is working fine all you have to do is download Magisk (latest stable version) and install the .zip from TWRP. It is very simple and after that your phone will be as smooth as it was (8.0 on the a8 is super smooth compared to 7.0 IMO) and the only drawback is that you will have a notificacion always shown saying that the phone has been modified and you should reboot your phone. I did as the guide on this sub said and to get rid of this notificacion you need to disable something from samsung services when you first boot your phone after a clean install, but I think I disabled all af them and I'm still getting the notificacion.

so it's as smooth as it is now eh? yes because I'm enjoying the speed and smoothness of Oreo on this device- actually I've never had nogat experenice since I just got this device all updated.
coming from s7 active its much better- I only wish the camera was little better- S7 STILL beats the A series... in low light and stabilization. DIS isn't as bad though but OiS is much better
how do you remove that notification? I haven't done it yet... I'm wondering if tripping knox is worth is on such a fresh device
also on download mode my phone says "FRP lock: off" and "OEM lockff" and my bootloader is unlocked... so i wouldn't need to flash the RMM bypass files then wouldn't I?
excellent! looks like were good now! broke device's knox and set it all back to normal within afew hours! pretty smooth
only hiccup was installing twrp from the beginning... apparently the patched version of Odin just doesn't work... we had to do a lot to get root on s7 active and sadly it sucked...

From my point of view, I can tell you that the speed and smoothness is very good on a rooted Oreo, and you can boost battery life it to satisfaction.
You can do so much more on a rooted phone, and make it all go away if root is disappointing. Do exactly what is described in the previous replies when rooting your device and it will not go wrong.
With the outstanding MCK- kernel root on Oreo works perfect.
Over 50% of people here have not followed directions and get locked out.

I have wrote how I did many times and their directions on rooting just follow directions and you will be fine.
Works great. Threre'a a csc zip that gets a few nice things and all... well a lot of the usual perks like vanced and better theme options/mods.
But it is a lonely device. No roms, xposed not yet available, and no access to FM on w variant to name a few.
Xpose does work I have used it before only issue slower boot up time.

Oh really? I was being lazy i guess. I downloaded from Magisk and did the TWRP flash. When i swam up to shore and ran the installer it said it wasn't able to fully function so i poked around... did not find anything so easily. Unity installer works mighty fine i must say.
Guess i will go look until i get it going.
Kinda thought it was weird since my A5 was the same API.

hey guys I've since rooted when I was at WLS3BRJ1... SUPER Smooth and fast... the only thing I COULDN'T work in was native call recording.
the battery has gotten a bit worse over the months but its still strong, maybe wanted to update the base to the last android 8 but I'm not sure if I want to mess with it its so excellent in software. whats the last month of android 8?

Just got a pixel 4 but would be tempted to root the pixel 2 while it's still got some life in it.
Got a few quick questions as to what has changed recently. Would be using magisk to achieve root after installing twrp. (Unless this is old hat and something else is the method of choice). Probably will have to unlock bootloader can't remember if I ever did it on the pixel 2
What's the procedure for monthly updates can they be done via ota or do I need to bring adb into it?

secondly, to root this, boot twrp and flash magisk. if you are on android 10 you will need to patch the boot image from the factory image of the version you are on with magisk and flash it to your current boot slot.
thirdly, if you are on android 10 and rooted, you will get otas. anything lower and you will need to adb sideload otas.
IMO the rooting party is pretty much over. I also returned to xda after many flashes years ago. For the Nexus, the great Beanstown dev provided monthly flashes for your custom recovery, but it looks so much more complicated today, to the point it's not worth the effort anymore. I'm sticking with stock till the '2 dies. The risk of unlocking the bootloader and getting root is simply not worth the headache as evident in the Q&A posts. So for now, for my much wanted rootness, I resort to debian linux on the desktop, a command line, and the luxury of typing sudo!!

But before unlocking bootloader and rooting should I accept all updates first during the initial setup?

Oh, i forgot as i dont use TWRP anymore.
Yes TWRP only works on Android 9.
However you can't install it like in the past time. You can only boot it via fastboot. You need to do this everytime you want to use TWRP. However when i tried it in past times it did not work well afaik, a full backup did not work at all.
So yeah try it with Android 9 first.
But with all the google backups nowadays i dont have the need for a nandroid (twrp backup)...
Especially as you can just reflash the stock image with deleting /data.

The very first thing to do is minimal setup so you can enable developer settings and allow bootloader unlocking. That's a sticky setting, so then you can update, factory reset, etc. before actually unlocking the bootloader and rooting. Especially important if you're US/Verizon (don't put your SIM in until bootloader unlocking is enabled).

Thanks. So I read the two rooting threads I referenced above. I have always used TWRP in the past, but seeing it not supported in Android 10, I am considering skipping that. Do you think TWRP will support Android 10 in the future? I am a little nervous making changes without a backup. My plan would be to stick with a rooted stock at first than consider migrating to a custom ROM. Any recommendations are appreciated. Phone will be delivered tomorrow.

No , I think most people use a TWRP backup because it restores you to a specifiic point with all your apps, user settings and your data in those apps.
Thats why i used it in the past times. Setiing up a phone in the past could be really time consuming and frustrating.
But nowadays, if you use the google backup (in Settings > System > Backup) (and the whatsapp one for messages - thtas the only messenger i use, but every other popular messager has a backup feature now) setting up the phone takes maybe 10 mins when i flash the factory image, it even gets my homescreen layout and my wallpaper back, also my settings. Apps which support that also keep their settings.
In the past i allways had a custom rom, because stock rom sucked. But with the Pixel theres no reason for me to use a custom rom anymore.
About root, i rooted my phone since i first used android, ca. 2010. But now I really dont need it anymore, so i just keep things stock.

I dont think TWRP will be supported in the futur on A10. Google locked up /system and some other partitions the TWRP team needs to find new solutions but there id not much hope.
Did you buy your phone unlocked? If yes, the worst part you should be worried about is losing you app data from some apps. You cant really brick your phone. In the worst case you just need to flash a factory image.
You should know that rooting your phone will probably break google pay and banking apps. May i ask what did you want use root for?
I dunno, I really like Lineage OS, but it just feels like a downgraded stock rom.. (I used it before all the time on all phones before getting a pixel).
Also, for every update (monthly) you need to patch your boot.img, flash it, and the apply the update. Its some work which i dont think is worth it anymore.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I am coming from a MotoG3 (rooted stock), a 2015 era phone. So a lot has changed. I really have not seen a mid range phone I really liked, so I jumped on the P3a when I heard the news they were being discontinued.
I use root mainly for Adfree, SD-Maid, and Titanium Backup. I used to use Cerberus until the developer reneged on a lifetime subscription. I don't mess with the system apps much, but I do keep a few apps frozen except for the times when I seldom need them.
Magisk is the best way to root your phone as it still passes the SafetyNet check and google pay and banking apps continue to work. There is an excellent thread here on how to do it.
[Guide] How to root the Pixel 3a with or without twrp & take OTA updates once rooted
Every month, I "uninstall" magisk (which really just restores the original boot files) and sideload the latest update, then I install the magisk-patched boot.img and my phone is rooted again.
To be honest, I don't miss twrp at all. adb and fastboot are all that's needed. The backup in android 10 is perfectly sufficient.
This phone is practically impossible to brick. I love my Pixel 3a, except for the one problem I had when the bottom speaker died and I had to have it repaired under warranty at the local ubreakifix in less than an hour.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I am coming from a MotoG3 (rooted stock), a 2015 era phone. So a lot has changed. I really have not seen a mid range phone I really liked, so I jumped on the P3a when I heard the news they were being discontinued.
I use root mainly for Adfree, SD-Maid, and Titanium Backup. I used to use Cerberus until the developer reneged on a lifetime subscription. I don't mess with the system apps much, but I do keep a few apps frozen except for the times when I seldom need them.

Yeah, I had that phone too It was pretty good for its time. I even replaced the screen once, but its really complicated on that phone... To your needs:
Adfree: you can setup a custom DNS server (i think it was adguards one) in the settings menu which will block all ads, so no real need anymore for adaway or root for this. Just google a bit.
Titanium backup: I does not work so well is what i heard and like said nowadays most apps backup over Google backup. With Android11 it will get even harder as /data partition is even more protected now. Not really worth it imho.
Froze system apps: Pixel Android is really barebones. The few apps which i dont need (like Google Music/Video PixelBuds app etc) you can just disable them in the settings. This will freeze them, its like uninstalling them, they wont show up at all.
SD Maid is great but only rooting it for using it, is not worth it. You can clear the cache of the apps which hoard a lot of data by yourself. Also, when you uninatll an app, it asks you if you want to delete your userdata as well. The phone takes care of the rest.
Cerberus: If you keep your bootloader locked, when your phone gets stolen, nobody can access your phone. Even if they reflash it, on first boot it will ask to login to the gmail last time set up. Theres no workaroud. Google aslo has a find my device thingy, wher you can track or delete your device remotly.
I would suggest to use your phone unrooted for some time, and if you really need to root it for something, you can still do it.

@bejunk Just a not to say thanks again. I took your advice and did not root. However, I did flash with GrapheneOS and then re-locked the bootloader. Time will tell if I like it.
