root on Oreo for A8- how easy is it and does it work properly? - Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) Questions & Answers

hey, I have an A8- its smooth and fast. I'm liking it a lot.
I unlocked the bootloader... getting tried of being not rooted. While I don't mind stock android I want root access.
how easy can it be done? do I HAVE to format? can I go without? how smooth and battery is it with it on?

You know, after you rooted your cell phone, you will lose the warranty on your cell phone.
With Odin Install official TWRP 3.2.3-0. In TWRP > Wipe>"Format Data" and follow the instructions in screen. After you flash latest "no-verity-opt-encrypt zip" and "RMM Bypass zip". Reboot System.
In TWRP flash MCK-Oreo_AB_BRI1_v2.0.1.zip kernel.
In TWRP flash Magisk 17.1 or Magisk 17.3 Beta. Reboot System.
After Reboot System, you install Magisk Manager 6.0.1.

If your phone has already TWRP installed and it is working fine all you have to do is download Magisk (latest stable version) and install the .zip from TWRP. It is very simple and after that your phone will be as smooth as it was (8.0 on the a8 is super smooth compared to 7.0 IMO) and the only drawback is that you will have a notificacion always shown saying that the phone has been modified and you should reboot your phone. I did as the guide on this sub said and to get rid of this notificacion you need to disable something from samsung services when you first boot your phone after a clean install, but I think I disabled all af them and I'm still getting the notificacion.
I'll add a screenshot to show you the notificacion. Sorry my phone is set in Spanish.
A8 ROOT NOTIFICACION htt p s://dri ve.goo gle.com/file/d/13GY6rd9N6BeGtoE iARcylghlA15tjmZN/view? usp=sharing

so it's as smooth as it is now eh? yes because I'm enjoying the speed and smoothness of Oreo on this device- actually I've never had nogat experenice since I just got this device all updated.
coming from s7 active its much better- I only wish the camera was little better- S7 STILL beats the A series... in low light and stabilization. DIS isn't as bad though but OiS is much better
how do you remove that notification? I haven't done it yet... I'm wondering if tripping knox is worth is on such a fresh device
also on download mode my phone says "FRP lock: off" and "OEM lockff" and my bootloader is unlocked... so i wouldn't need to flash the RMM bypass files then wouldn't I?
excellent! looks like were good now! broke device's knox and set it all back to normal within afew hours! pretty smooth
only hiccup was installing twrp from the beginning... apparently the patched version of Odin just doesn't work... we had to do a lot to get root on s7 active and sadly it sucked...

From my point of view, I can tell you that the speed and smoothness is very good on a rooted Oreo, and you can boost battery life it to satisfaction.
You can do so much more on a rooted phone, and make it all go away if root is disappointing. Do exactly what is described in the previous replies when rooting your device and it will not go wrong.
With the outstanding MCK- kernel root on Oreo works perfect.

Over 50% of people here have not followed directions and get locked out.
Easy phone to root.
I have wrote how I did many times and their directions on rooting just follow directions and you will be fine.

Works great. Threre'a a csc zip that gets a few nice things and all... well a lot of the usual perks like vanced and better theme options/mods.
But it is a lonely device. No roms, xposed not yet available, and no access to FM on w variant to name a few.

Xpose does work I have used it before only issue slower boot up time.

Xposed does work, just read the Xposed research topic my friend!

Oh really? I was being lazy i guess. I downloaded from Magisk and did the TWRP flash. When i swam up to shore and ran the installer it said it wasn't able to fully function so i poked around... did not find anything so easily. Unity installer works mighty fine i must say.
Guess i will go look until i get it going.
Kinda thought it was weird since my A5 was the same API.
Lazy.
Thanks

hey guys I've since rooted when I was at WLS3BRJ1... SUPER Smooth and fast... the only thing I COULDN'T work in was native call recording.
the battery has gotten a bit worse over the months but its still strong, maybe wanted to update the base to the last android 8 but I'm not sure if I want to mess with it its so excellent in software. whats the last month of android 8?

I ordered a boost mobile galaxy J7 on a payment plan from above link. Is it the same J7 that is here or is there 2 versions of the J7 like a 2015 version and 2016 version. Also whats the steps to root, and is there a twrp recovery for it. Also where can I get a copy of stock rom tar for it. Thanks.

There aren't any root methods or recovery for it yet, & as far as I've seen there isn't a stock tar either. The Boost model doesn't seem to be recieving as much support as the other variants.
What about kingroot just to do a partition backup of the stock recovery then unroot and see if someone could make it a twrp recovery and if there's no recovery there's a chance chainfires flashfire might be able to make a backup and flash supersu without a recovery. Im just not sure what could be done to fix a bootloop as for flashfire the system need to be booting and on for it to work. Also i think flashfire only works for with supersu unless thats changed over time to work with any superuser app. There's some root methods I just saw for pc like one click root it says it works but I'm not sure. I think if I can pull this recovery partition there's a chance for twrp but I can't do nothing until I get the phone. Hmm the phone is still new 2016 model for boost mobile so hopefully in time it all works out.

I've tried Kingroot but there's no root strategy... it asked me if I would like to disable Knox but I didn't allow it to so I wouldn't know. I'm honestly only trying to root it so that I can unlock native tethering/disable Boost's hotspot limit.
You wouldn't know how to bypass that by any chance, would you?

I am not 100% sure on that one. I know I am going to try to bypass it too cause I need my wifi on the go for my tablet.

This one here says they got root on 6.0 there's a few steps which has to be taken. I'd try it once I get my phone. Im not sure if its a official verison or unofficial version but a couple people said it worked.

Looks like sprint launched the j7 as well so if development happens for sprint it will also work on boost mobile and virgin mobile. Sprint usually has all its galaxy's the same way just different software for all 3 carriers.

Heres the stock recovery and stock boot image for boost mobile galaxy j7. Im having trouble using clockworkmod recovery builder online. When i go to click build recovery it just hangs there and says session took too long then fails.. Would anyone know how iam supposed to fix this error iam getting or is there another way to make this stock recovery a custom recovery which is a odin flashable tar. Reason is cause ive tried every root method i could find and they all dont work so i was hoping that flashing supersu through recovery would. I also think a systemless root with a modified boot image would work. Im not sure to build the boot image or recovery. A little help would be appreciated.
i have ported twrp from the other variants and it flashes with odin fine but it just wont boot if someone would like me to upload so they can take a crack at it llet me know, i just cant figure out why it wont boot
I like boost mobile if they keep making phones as nice as this j7 ill stay with them. Im on the $55 unlimited high speed data plan which i upgraded to auto pay which saves me $5 a month. So for $50 a month i have unlimited high speed data and a nice Galaxy J7. Im new to boost mobile and not regretting switching from tmobile.

Life itself ??
I dont see whats up with the camera reviews on this phone online. Iam able to take actual pretty good pictures with the front and back camera. I like the flash on the front camera how its like a flashlight which is on and can pickup your face when theres no light and takes alright selfies. I know its not 50 mega pixel camera so i cant expect it to be one but it gets everything done i need. And the battery life is pretty good as well. Im on facebook and google play misic and youtube all day and it doesnt take to long to let it charge fully as long as your not power using it during charging... it charges faster when its turned off and plugged into the charger.. i got nothing but good things to say about this phone i have a note 2 as well and it wasnt even as nice as this phone specs wise. I mean id hate to flash a rom and only get a couple hours battery life each charge i could live without a rom cause this phone is just that nice to me in my opinion..
I've ordered this phone (SM J700P) and am waiting for it to get here. So far nobody has indicated that there is a working root or a custom recovery for it.
http://www.smartphonerankings.com/samsung-galaxy-j7-sm-j700p/
I'm pretty sure it's also known as the J7 (2015) and the 2016 version is a little less long but not on Boost.
So it looks like this phone will be used as stock for at least a few months. Maybe before the end of the year someone will develop a root for it.
Since I posted the questions here, I ran across this how to on rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-j7/how-to/video-root-samsung-galaxy-j7-sm-j710f-t3401790
I am going to give it a try and see how it works out. It may very well work, so it is worth a try.
Thank you all for your responses, and I will let you know if I have any success with this method.
I like boost also, but I have not dealt with them for about a year, as my last cellphone is sleeping with the fishes, an S4. My assistant ignored my request that he not give my cell number to the employees and he gave it to everyone, so I threw it in the lake where I was fishing and went without a phone for a year.
Life can be very peaceful without a cellphone.
.
Facebook was nice enough to make me a beta tester which i thought was nice of them to pick me as a tester for both apps..
They can't pay me enough to put a facebook app on my phone.
They are already to invasive about what you do, and where you go on a PC, so the last thing I want is spyware on my phone.
http://www.androidauthority.com/become-a-beta-tester-for-google-app-on-android-650117/
Link to be a google app beta tester im now a beta tester for google as well.. theres not much else to do right now on this phone so have a little fun. Note theses beta versions arent supported by the devs on custom software so their not going to fix anything even though the features work... especially google they want you stock... so have fun and remember your feedback is important..

Seems fairly straight forward getting root and xposed up and running, if anyone has any info', good or bad using root and xposed on red prime 4, perhaps this is the thread, please state which rom you are using etc etc.
I always had Samsungs before, root and xposed worked perfectly on each, seems it's not quite as straight forward perhaps on this phone.

Thanks below to member Ardrift for the link and info'
I have uploaded the files to google drive. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B9SW1On-CcCac09VTzd5TW5kcnc?usp=sharing First you have to install the apk, then you can download the zip from the app, or just flash the zip that I've included in the folder. It's the same as If you downloaded the latest miui version from the app.
Using the xposed links above, running on 8.2.1, with super su https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&r...kSiKyUIbkp6Is7kZQ&sig2=nDsK9Xa-mZPzLXoVrHAqcg
phones running sweet. I tried 2 newer super su though had issues with no mtp connection, though with super su 2.6.5..... working a charm, can confirm lucky patcher (latest version) so far has worked flawlessly, no bootloops or lags...
(post write up, found this rom juice hungry after a week or so, with xposed then went epic) must be xposed I thinking.
.
Using eur rom 8.1.3 (after trying global x 2 and epic)
Not using to many apps, phone set up to save battery, cpu on power save etc.
Again my phone battery life sucks big time, seem to spend ages to charge, and depletes in a day.
I have perhaps 10 or more xposed apps, which I like for mods, though feeling maybe miui not really suited to xposed as it's a modified xposed.
Thinking this is the cause of battery drain. Anyone members thinking the same?
I am not using magisk on this rom, though have used it, using the modified version with thanks, though thinking no thanks to using it and uninstalling and perhaps reflashing the rom, or trying another.
Thanks in advance for help re this. Sick of battery drain.
Had similar amount of xposed apps on J5 and battery was ok/good.
Is miui not good with xposed for battery? , Despite the fact it does work

As i told you before that do not use Xposed on This Device ? its draining the battery too fast. so what you have to do is that just install a new ROM from Start and then Root it Using Majisk, and then Greenify. you will enjoy the battery Life then.

How do you install Majisk if you already have root with SuperSU?Do you have to uninstall first SuperSU and install Majisk after? There isn't any good info about making the replacement. Also why Majisk is better than SuperSU and what is the difference?

Well if your device is already rooted then it's ok but why is it important to replace SU with Majisk. So because SU binary are out dated and if you update it, then you will loose the MTP connection with the PC. And only charging work. You cannot communicate with the your device through PC. If you want to go to Majisk over SU then just unroot from SU menu and the install Majisk and then download the latest binary and then reboot device to TWRP and flash the binary and you have done.

I already had the problem with mtp connection even without updating SuperSU.I solved that by adding some lines on build.prop but i don't like this solution. It's very strange that SU binary is outdated, what are these SuperSU updates do then?Anyway, thanks for the answer!

Many people are dropping SU due. To them being sold to a Chinese company that is not trusted. Same reason Xiaomi is still not liked by dev.

[ROOT][MAGISK] For Asus ZenPad 10 3s[P027]

Just goot this device rooted! Just gonna test the script a few times so there isent any bugs and i will upload it!
EDIT: Systemless Root methods like Magisk resets after root(I Think SuperSu works if u tweak dm-verity in the kernel). But using system-root both breaks saftynet and is boring
So im gonna try to edit the boot img to work with magisk or SuperSU even if the bootloader is locked.
If none of theese things works there is a way to Re-root after each reboot but its ofc much easyer just to edit the boot.img or unlock the BL
EDIT 2: I will also try to reverse engineer the bootloader to try to find a weak point where we can unlock it, for easyer rooting and creating custom roms
EDIT 3: Also forgot to mention xposed works because you dont "need" root. If anyone want xposed just reply in the thread and il upload the script "as is" even though it resets after each reboot, but root works perfect have tested multiple apps.
And as i said before, before i release the root method publicly i want to check if its the BL who "resets" the kernel like on some HTC devices or if its a simple dm-verity problem , if it is the dm-verity thing its easy to fix.
More info:
Flashing kernel, system, recovery works because the only partitions that are protected are the BL and FRP partions but not for long
So far:
Magisk: Works
Bootloader: Locked
Saftynet: Passes

Wow, finally there's a method to root. I own the device since august and I really want to get it rooted due to all bloatware I want to uninstall and to install 3rd party apps.:good:
super thanks to you me too and thanks to you I could root the tablet with all s is unnecessary thank you for your work:good::good::good:
Cant wait
Wow.... time is ticking to bring root to the P027
I can't wait for an update on this.
There must be another way to get a rooted ASUS P027. I tried much but don't have any success. I think that there is a way to push some files manually to /data/local/tmp. Setting right permissions using adb. Finally executing a root-shell-script from one of many should do the rest. Problem is not to get the files inside the system, you have to do it again after each reboot.
I'm a bit nervous to modify bootloaders and flash them on the go with no oem support. If some support for this device comes available from ASUS it should be a lot easyer to do.
I cant upload photo's till i'm no longer seem like a robot. I also got some kind of root on my P027. only for a moment. After reboot it is gone.
I can't wait for that!
Will it come out soon..... so excited ^_^

Ok guy's where do we stand on root as of 5pm Wednesday 10.04.2017 ??
I bought the ASUS Zenpad 3S 10 [P027] off Amazon on Saturday on a flash sale for $265, knowing it didn't have root, and that's a shame because it's a beautiful & buttery smooth tablet.
Today, as I was pondering boxing it up for a return, I figured I'd look for myself once more for the hell-of-it, AND BOOM! I found this thread!
So where are we guys? I'll test it for ya or whatever! So friggin' pumped ROOT has been established! Dare I say -Vanilla Oreo ROM with onscreen softkeys??? YEAH!
Really looking forward to this! I don't mind getting my hands dirty, but just waiting for the script I'm very happy to have stumbled upon this thread, can't wait to have root on this tablet!!
Fortunately we will get to see the script. I own the P027 since auust 17. A very good hardware. But without root its only worth half. So, me too is awaiting the script but so far I guess we still have to wait. Til now, no root app works (iRoot, Kingo, e.g.) Very sad because I think that once we rooted it and get rid of all the OEM bloatware, this tab may rocks a lot more.

Can you go ahead and upload the script for those of us brave enough to try it? Thank you for all your hard work!
I got root and xposed. But I don't have a way to get it in that device
At my next post will I upload a photo or link of my own (semi) rooted P027. The Magic of rooting a device which is unsupported is far away from easy as flashing chainfire's zips or something possible using Odin or what. Most likely if there was a custom recovery for the P027 root would be easy because of all possibilities you have.
I've tried a lot of other ways to get in to try modify something in that locked system. It is hard to get there without losing patients! I also lose social networks I belong to. Even if days counts 48 hour instead of 24, root wasn't there with the success I had hope to. Sometimes only after manually redirecting some files with adb and manually setting right permissions to every file. It becomes possible to get accessing "su" in terminal app. Only sometimes, after each modifying something, you're device needs to reboot for applying that modification. At that point you lose everything before you can use it.
If someone can post latest boot.img I will try to patch it with Magisk. If that is possible it will get easier to activate systemless xposed. A few weeks ago on note 8 launch day... It took at least 1 hell of a day before root came available on xda. Also twrp and custom roms are available.
Hope soon to make it happening for real.
hi I would buy this tablet but wanted to understand root situation. can you run the root on this device? you can install Rom?

At my next post will I upload a photo or link of my own (semi) rooted P027. The Magic of rooting a device which is unsupported is far away from easy as flashing chainfire's zips or something possible using Odin or what. Most likely if there was a custom recovery for the P027 root would be easy because of all possibilities you have.
I've tried a lot of other ways to get in to try modify something in that locked system. It is hard to get there without losing patients! I also lose social networks I belong to. Here is the boot.img from WW_V14.0210.1709.27: https://mega.nz/#!4bQExBTB!5fyivXxvP4aYAxCDjsYRJ1X7o1wMXYGBLf1TO0ns-z4
I downloaded the WW_V14.0210.1709.27 firmware from ASUS Support then unzip the package to get this file.
Hope it will be helpful to you. I am really looking forward to root this device!
Thank you for your hard work!

Android Oreo root Question

I only picked up my NP last week and after a couple of days it updated to 8.0 / Oreo, So all my research and prep for a root & flash has been thrown up in the air.
Are there any major changes anyone knows of that might make rooting, custom bootloader & rom flash problematic?
i did really like the old leanback launcher UI and the update is way too fussy for my liking, and i'm not even going to comment on the lack of catch-up content for UK users. If ever a device needed hacking, this is the one.
cheers in advance
Honestly im pretty sure you could just flash magisk through twrp with the 8.0 zip. Im pretty sure it would work
thanks for the reply, i'm dithering as i'd hate to lose the chromecast feature and have yet to find a rom which has it mastered and working.

Magisk root and TWRP work just fine. You won't lose any functionality, but that's with the stock images.
Is there a way to get back without a computer? I lost root after the forced update. Think I'm still unlocked boot loader got the icon at boot up but have no twrp recovery anymore or root sadly I miss 7.1.2 after the update it crapped the nexus player
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I don't believe so. You'll need a computer to run adb to downgrade.
An easier method is to use the Nexus Root Toolkit which will input all the commands for you. You just point and click.

what are the interesting things I can do after rooting my op6?

After leaving Samsung, I did not root my phone as never felt the need for it, as I used root for battery mods and roms.
So can anyone tell me that what interesting mods I can do after rooting my phone?
You can install custom ROMs which have extended features for your phone like changing what buttons do, having an always on display show different things, have shortcuts mapped etc. Custom kernels can manage your phone better whether you like more battery or more performance. Then you have magisk modules come in that can add further functionality and then Edxposed, F-droid the list goes on and on.
You can get rid of ads in your apps.
You can have modded youtube without any ads and other stuff.
Tons of stuff
i root because a few mods:
Viper4android
Call Recorder - not available in my country.
EdXposed with gravitybox - for little customizing
Youtube Vanced
i also root because i had oneplus 5 before which was not rooted and one day i messed up and couldnt get it to work again. i really tried everything - if i was rooted i probably could have fixed my op5.
How do you install new updates then?
Once the updates are out you can install them directly with your phone as you have been doing with any other phone.
The only thing is that after every update you have to root again your phone as the update 'delete' the root.
Nothing major, don't worry. Trust me, us, once you root you won't be able to have your phone unrooted anymore ?
If you are in doubt I suggest you to root it once and then, after a new update you can decide if root it again or not ?
If ur not willing to walk the mile of getting knowledge, dont root
You can use it to teleport to another dimension.
Jk jokes aside you have full control of your system and can do all kinds of modification which how you modify will make it awesome or perform worse.

I have rooted my phones for years when I used Samsung devices.
Samsung had issues with battery and performance so that time I had rooted my device.
But since I am using op6 I am so satisfied with the performance and battery, that's why I never rooted my device.
Now I am bored and want to try few mods, so I will root my phone.
I have never used magisk root method, and as I said it's been almost 2 years I rooted device, so I'll be happy if someone can guide me in detail and best root method, I am currently on latest fw android 10.
Thanks in advance!
I do agree with you about Samsung, that is why I passed to oneplus few years ago, the only thing I do miss is the camera quality.
A part of that, you'll be happy to have your phone rooted (Magisk is amazing!)
I suggest you the section of this forum GUIDES, NEWS AND DISCUSSION; once there you'll find the guide titled "OnePlus 6: Unlock Bootloader | Flash TWRP | Root | Nandroid & EFS Backup !!"
It looks more difficult than with Samsung but it isn't at all!
Good luck man and welcome to the Dark side

Thanks for the info, I checked the forum.
Kindly help me to understand few things -
Do I need to install Twrp tp install Magisk?
Will I lose any apps like snapchat?
You can root your phone also without installing the twrp (if you are not intended to deep mod your phone). I'd suggest anyway to install the twrp.
Yes, magisk is needed it can be compared as the supersu but with extended feautures.
If I don't mistake (I did unlock my bootloader on my 1st day I owned the oneplus) all data will be wiped and yes... You might loose your data.
If you can make a backup of your photos, videos and any extra file on a PC and after the unlock and root procedure you can restore them.
All other app can just be downloaded again.... ???
for people mentioning about adfree & background youtube, this can be done in a virgin phone also. just install the vanced apk.

I guess I'll be doing this on next weekend. I'll post query if I have any doubts. Thanks!
I find that making phone calls with this device seem to be the thing that most people do

Follow this guide
h***s://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-install-twrp/
Double check all the adb instructions before confirming them and check that you have all the right files necessary for the operation. (start your pc terminal as administrator)
