Launchers and gestures problems - Google Pixel 4a Guides, News, & Discussion

Pixel launcher has the annoying search bar on its home screen which is irremovable.
Nova launcher is arguably the best for customizability. But there's something that ticks me off when using Nova. Whenever you open recent apps the transition isn't smooth as with Pixel. It has a small hiccup.
(See https://imgur.com/a/lewvZu3 for what I mean)
I tried almost every launcher on the market and they all had the same problem.
So I contacted Nova's development team to give them my feedback. This is what they had to say:
"Hello,
PLEASE READ THIS RESPONSE IN FULL!
You can read Google's official statement and our statement about the issues you and anyone else using Android 10 and Android 11 are experiencing. Please take note that Google admits to this being broken on their end of things and that a fix will be coming in a future update to Android(Stated March 2019.).
However, it's now well over a year later and there are still many issues with full system gestures and 3rd party launchers on both Android and Android 11. These issues will remain for the foreseeable future as Google has no plans to completely fix their full system gestures.
This includes things such as the CLOSE ALL/CLEAR ALL button not showing up when you access the Recent Apps screen. As well as a delay of being able to tap on app icons when returning to the home screen from another app, from viewing the Recent Apps screen or anything similar.
These problems will still be there when Android 11 is released in its final form as Google has made it clear it's not going to fix/change things any time soon.
Please understand, there is absolutely NOTHING WE CAN DO TO FIX OR CHANGE THIS IN ANY WAY! Contact Google or your device OEM directly with these issues as contacting any launcher developer isn't the correct thing to do and isn't going to accomplish anything.
SAMSUNG USERS: Samsung has enabled full system gestures to be enabled within 3rd party launchers with their One UI 2.5 update. This means you can enable those gestures, but things are still very broken, especially when it comes to animations and how smooth the gestures work. This is NOT something Nova, or any other 3rd party launcher can fix. Only Google can fix it.
In the end, none of this is something we(Nova) can fix or change in any way and neither can any other 3rd party launcher for that matter. It is ultimately up to Google and only Google to fix full system gestures completely. Though they have made it clear that full system gestures will remain broken even with the final release of Android 11 and likely well beyond that.
We understand that this statement was made during a beta version of Android 10. However, as is stated in the below URL, this issue will remain broken even after Android 10, and now Android 11, is released in its final form. What this means is that Google knew well ahead of time that they had no plans to fix this until much later so it's still a relative issue today.
GOOGLE'S STATEMENT:
https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2019/07/android-q-beta-5-update.html
OUR STATEMENT:
https://help.teslacoilapps.com/faq/gesture-navigation
As of the December 2019 Security Patch from Google, you can now enable full system gestures within 3rd party launchers. However, please note, there are still a lot of issues with the gesture system such as animations not working, Close All button not showing up and several other things. This is not something any launcher developer, including us here at Nova, can fix or change in any way.
This is still all up to Google to fix at some point in the future and to get things working 100% the way everyone expects them to be.
If you experience any issues at all while using full system gestures, it is highly suggested that you contact Google directly and/or file bug reports with them directly so that your voice can be heard by them directly.
ACTION LAUNCHER'S FALSE CLAIMS: Action Launcher made an announcement back in late December 2019, is actually misleading and 100% incorrect. They are referring to the back swipe edit zones and similar stuff. Full system gestures are completely controlled by Android and not something a launcher can just suddenly add support for or change in any way.
If you actually try to use the full system gestures in Action Launcher, you'll see they are still as broken as they have been and will remain that way until Google fixes things themselves."
Edit: uploaded an animated gif of the example but XDA converted it to a still image, so I had to upload on imgur.

I'm using Nova as well. Have you also had an issue when swiping up and holding to access recent apps, the apps fill the entire screen instead of showing the smaller preview window?

Just updated to A11 beta and the bugs are gone. It's working smoothly now.

The gestures work fine if you're willing to root and use QuickSwitch with a supported launcher. (No third party launchers support A11 with QuickSwitch yet though)

Search bar can be removed and more options.
See this thread
Just make sure you get the right files for A10, I have not tested on A11 yet.

I noticed their website has a Fastboot file and an OTA file. Will the OTA still require wiping my device or will it install over the top of the May 2019 update?

No just downloaded and sideloaded OTA and it updates without wipe. The only new features I don't see implemented is the new gesture system, it is still using pill style from Android P.
And this which is odd to me.

I saw it on Telegram first. I believe @63c posted something about it. I had read an article a few months back that said Pixel's would be getting beta this way but super surprised to see mata firmware on the Play Store. It's really bizarre to me but I guess it makes perfect sense when you consider how hard Google tries to be like ?

Anyone's check VoLTE after flashing 10.0 ??
No volte for me, (f*ck!)
just a note, cts is broken in q beta. you wont be able to use any safetynet apps like google pay or pokemon go or some banking apps.
It's here but not the most stable. Some apps and games don't work. Pixel Launcher crashes in startup, a few launchers I've tried don't work at the moment.
Working fine here. No app problems or crashes yet (but I'm only a few hours in).
My thoughts:
"Full gestural navigation" is difficult to use. The pill is too small to grab, and it makes app switching difficult.
Sometimes the nav bar comes back when full gesture is on (in the keyboard, for example). Pressing the back button will click on both the back button *and* whatever was behind it (an app in the launcher, for example)
2-button navigation (like Pie) works as it always has.
The app switcher draws below third-party launchers like Nova and Action Launcher. After about 1 second, the launcher disappears and the app switcher is accessible. Makes for a very buggy experience. I assume this is to allow launchers to perform an animation during the transition, which simply isn't implemented yet.
Dismissing notifications can only be done by swiping right now. Swiping left sets the preferences for notifications from that app.
How do you enable full-screen navigation? I am not seeing that option under settings.

Just wanted to mention, you don't have to initiate the gesture from the pill, whether you're swiping up to go home or swiping right to switch apps, you can do it from anywhere on the "navbar" for lack of a better term.
Edit: For the full gesture system.
Can anyone say how long it took from downloading the Essential Q App to actually receiving the OTA upgrade to 10 beta3

I opted in via the beta app before I went to see a movie, when I came out I had OTA notification, so within 2-3 hours. Some stuff pretty broken, so I would only recommend using if you're a developer or don't need this phone as daily driver.

This is a second phone for me and when I saw the new beta 3 phone list I turned it on and downloaded the app., approximately 9am Eastern. I hadn't used the phone in 3-4 months so there was a waiting notice to upgrade to the lastest Android 9 security patch. I hoped it would ignore it and go on to Q but of course no luck. The security update ran ok but no Q so far?? Don't have a sim in it presently, hope that doesn't stop the Q update over Wifi.

Anyone tried Key, Chase or Citi banking apps?
FYI I had several apps crashing: Gmail, Outlook, Amazon Prime Video, and Amazon Shopping.
The fix was mentioned on Reddit but if you have opted into the beta for the Android System Webview you need to opt out of its beta in the Play Store, then disable and reenable Android System Webview.
So any apps that rely on Webview can probably be fixed that way

Vertical recent apps Android 10?

Is there any way to get vertical recent apps on Android 10 open beta? The horizontal recent is pretty much useless as it only shows one app on the screen.
Normally you install another launcher (Apex Classic as an option) and you have it (back).

Hmm try using an alternative launcher and freezing/disabling the oneplus launchers
If freezing / disabling is what it takes, that is a pity for bon-rooters. That would really be customer unfriendly. I hate this whole gesture based thing because I use my fix gestures since 2014 when I started using Apex launcher. It would mean I need to reprogram my brains.
Freezing also breaks gestures
Perhaps soon it'll be introduced:
Here's hoping anyway!
I disabled the horizontal recents in pie.
Now after the update to 10, I don't have recents at all.
I reinstalled the oneplus Launcher. Still no recents.
Any ideas?
Is there any solution for this, the recent apps on the oneplus 7 pro is just horrible
Although the 7 pro is a brilliant phone, Oxygen isnt that great : I come from a Samsung with goodlock and i have to say that i am disappointed at the lack of options in oxygen.

Not that I know of, unfortunately. I've actually just forced myself to get used to it....
There is no vertical recents provider in Android 10.
I have looked all over the playstore for an app that can do something like this but sadly nothing.
As an alternative i am using Jina sidebar and sort the apps there by last used.
Everyone complains about samsung's UI and raves about oxygen, but now that i have it i feel very much opposite
Oneplus 7 pro hardware is fantastic certainly for the price i paid for it, but the software leaves a lot to be desired. Sadly the country i live in has no possibilities for returning your purchase, otherwise i would run back to samsung.
Come on oneplus, make some software !
Any updates on this matter ?
When hell freezes over I'll get used to this stupid horizontal app switcher
If at least I could remap that button to one of those third party recent apps, but not even that.
Once ago (android P) I could freeze the default launcher, and things went back to normal. Now, if I freeze the launcher, nothing comes up.
I think back then the default provider was replaced by an alternative provider, which I would gladly download again if I remembered the name. Something with "quick" on it.

3rd party launchers - recents tab

I'm currently on Android 10 and reluctantly sticking with the pixel launcher. When I use Lawnchair or Nova I get the the recents tab as sort of an overlay over the homescreen. This happens a few times a day and the only thing I can do to get rid of it is to reboot. This is wicked annoying. Has anyone experienced this and/or know if there's a fix?

I've not experienced this ? although I am using Lawnchair with QuickSwitch on a LC build that supports Q as a recents provider, but I've had no real issues regarding the weird recents overlay stuff.

I also experience this with Nova launcher. I am really missing the clear all button. I am guessing some compatibility issue with the pixel launcher. I typically freeze or delete the stock launcher, however when I froze it I lost the ability to open the recent tab at all.
Im using Evie launcher. Its simple, but does what I want for my Pixel 3A.

I don't use gesture navigation, rather I prefer the old-style three-button system navigation (System settings -> System -> Gestures -> System navigation -> 3-button navigation). I'm not sure this suggestion will help you but it was offered to me through the Discord support site:
After a reboot go into Nova Launcher's settings and scroll near the bottom. Click on "Set Default Launcher". The normal Android prompt asks if you want to "Use Nova Launcher as Home". Tap "Always". It will appear as if the Nova Launcher Settings window is re-drawn. Back out of Nova's settings.
Now when you tap on the square recents button you'll see your recent application list in a manner which is similar to Android 9. Even though you told Android 10 to always use Nova Launcher, after each reboot you'll need to follow this process to get the three-button navigation to work in Nova Launcher the way it traditionally has. So this isn't really a fix but a circumvention for how Android 10 and third-party launcher software work together.

I sent an email to Nova about this and this is on Googles side according to them. They sent this back
Hello,
You can read Google's official statement and our statement about the issues you and anyone else using Android 10 is experiencing. Please take note that Google admits to this being broken on their end of things and that a fix will be coming in a future update to Android.
We understand that this statement was made 2 months during a beta of Android 10. However, as is stated in the below URL, this issue will remain broken even after Android 10 is released in its final form, which was September 3rd, 2019. What this means is that Google knew well ahead of time that they had no plans to fix this until much later so it's still a relative issue today.
Google's statement: https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2019/07/android-q-beta-5-update.html
Our statement: https://help.teslacoilapps.com/faq/gesture-navigation
What this means is that Nova, nor any other 3rd party launcher, can fix or change this in any way at this time. This issue is 100% on Google's end and Google is the only ones who can fix this issue. Their entire statement is below. Please note that the statement was from some time in July 2019, but it still pertains today and will continue to pertain until Google includes a fix for it in an upcoming release of Android 10.
PLEASE READ OUR SIGNATURE BELOW
If you didn't do so this time, please always use Nova Settings -> Contact Support to contact us as this provides us with a ton of useful information that can and will help us help you quicker and better. When doing so, please make sure the supportdetails.txt file remains attached to your email.
Answers to your questions are often found in the FAQ's so please read them prior to sending an email to possibly find your answer without having to wait for a response: https://help.teslacoilapps.com/faq You can also always access the FAQ's via Nova Settings -> FAQ's.
Yeah, looks like I'm stuck with the Pixel Launcher, which is not too bad really.
I knew Android 10 gestures don't work with 3rd party launcher, but now recents is buggy as well... Almost as if they tied the recents in with the launcher.
Don't want to sound like I'm ranting, but... My Huawei had these gestures since Android Pie (EMUI 9) and it worked properly from day one. Just saying...
I'll have to wait.

Android 10: three button navbar with alternate launcher, no recent apps

Hi there,
I use an alternate launcher (Nova Launcher). After the Upgrade to Windows 10, the recent navbar button (the one on the right) is not working any more. The running apps are not shown and I only see the background image. The same is true when using the Microsoft Launcher.
When I switch back to Xperia Home, the button is working well.
This looks like a bug to me. Is it working for anyone?
Best regards

Just use the stock home launcher because after android 10 update all previous launchers won't work, or at least will have bugs... wait until this launcher have support for android 10. that's it!
Microsoft Launcher
Yeah I tried Nova but it was too much like everything else. Yes I'll admit I was sceptical but I find this MS launcher fits my requirements and is really responsive and doesn't kill the battery. Give it a go.
I read from a few news sites stating that this "not compatible with third party launcher" problem is Google's fault. Even many Pixel phones still suffer from it. Basically you'll need to wait for December security patch and other launcher developers starting to update their launcher to support android 10 to be able to use third party launchers with 10's navigation gesture and recent app.
What I ended up doing is rooting and installing the Magisk QuickSwitch module. Then install OnePlus Launcher (apk is posted here on XDA) and set that as the recents provider in QuickSwitch.
At that point you can use any launcher (Lawnchair in my case) and disable Xperia Home via a debloater app (also available via Magisk).

Make Android 10 Gesture Navigation compatible with any Custom Launcher (NO ROOT)

One of the major talking point is the lack of Android 10 gesture support for various custom launchers. Some launchers might have incorporated these gestures on their own (but they are quite few in numbers). Here, i would be giving you an ADB command through which you could make these gestures compatible with any custom launcher on any Android 10 device (including our very own Moto One Action).
Code:
adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural
After executing the above code, the Gesture navigation will still be grayed out as before, but will have been selected and enabled. Moreover, hack by no means is perfect, and occasional gesture issues might happen every now and then (as far as my opinion goes, I am ready to forego these small hiccups in return of something great, but the choice is ultimately yours).

A10s gestures already support 3rd party launchers since 11.2019. I was also shocked to find out they're still getting disabled after I updated to 10. I guess Moto software team haven't updated their base yet, Wich is absurd. Or they're doing this intentionally in order to make users use their own gestures... ?

Currently, Android 10 Gesture Navigation is incompatible with 3rd party launchers on non Pixel devices. I read that it checks to see if the launcher is your default system launcher before allowing Gesture Navigation. Would the following process be an effective workaround and make Gesture Navigation compatible with a launcher of my choosing?
- Root phone
- Install 3rd party launcher
- Set 3rd party launcher as system app and change permissions accordingly
- Remove stock launcher and it's backup APKs
- Restart device
I have an ROG phone 2 with Android 10, but I really don't like the stock launcher and I also don't like having the navbar on screen.

Currently and exactly from November 2019 this isn't true. Google have updated their repos even the one for aosp to support 3rd party launchers.
It's a matter of choice by the manufacturer company to update their base in order to support it.
