Make Android 10 Gesture Navigation compatible with any Custom Launcher (NO ROOT) - Motorola One Action Guides, News, & Discussion

One of the major talking point is the lack of Android 10 gesture support for various custom launchers. Some launchers might have incorporated these gestures on their own (but they are quite few in numbers). Here, i would be giving you an ADB command through which you could make these gestures compatible with any custom launcher on any Android 10 device (including our very own Moto One Action).
Code:
adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural
After executing the above code, the Gesture navigation will still be grayed out as before, but will have been selected and enabled. Moreover, hack by no means is perfect, and occasional gesture issues might happen every now and then (as far as my opinion goes, I am ready to forego these small hiccups in return of something great, but the choice is ultimately yours).

A10s gestures already support 3rd party launchers since 11.2019. I was also shocked to find out they're still getting disabled after I updated to 10. I guess Moto software team haven't updated their base yet, Wich is absurd. Or they're doing this intentionally in order to make users use their own gestures... ?

It's on Google, not on Motorola. Remember Moto One Action is an Android one device

Currently, Android 10 Gesture Navigation is incompatible with 3rd party launchers on non Pixel devices. I read that it checks to see if the launcher is your default system launcher before allowing Gesture Navigation. Would the following process be an effective workaround and make Gesture Navigation compatible with a launcher of my choosing?
- Root phone
- Install 3rd party launcher
- Set 3rd party launcher as system app and change permissions accordingly
- Remove stock launcher and it's backup APKs
- Restart device
I have an ROG phone 2 with Android 10, but I really don't like the stock launcher and I also don't like having the navbar on screen.

Currently and exactly from November 2019 this isn't true. Google have updated their repos even the one for aosp to support 3rd party launchers.
It's a matter of choice by the manufacturer company to update their base in order to support it.

3rd party launchers - recents tab

I'm currently on Android 10 and reluctantly sticking with the pixel launcher. When I use Lawnchair or Nova I get the the recents tab as sort of an overlay over the homescreen. This happens a few times a day and the only thing I can do to get rid of it is to reboot. This is wicked annoying. Has anyone experienced this and/or know if there's a fix?

I've not experienced this ? although I am using Lawnchair with QuickSwitch on a LC build that supports Q as a recents provider, but I've had no real issues regarding the weird recents overlay stuff.

I also experience this with Nova launcher. I am really missing the clear all button. I am guessing some compatibility issue with the pixel launcher. I typically freeze or delete the stock launcher, however when I froze it I lost the ability to open the recent tab at all.
Im using Evie launcher. Its simple, but does what I want for my Pixel 3A.

I don't use gesture navigation, rather I prefer the old-style three-button system navigation (System settings -> System -> Gestures -> System navigation -> 3-button navigation). I'm not sure this suggestion will help you but it was offered to me through the Discord support site:
After a reboot go into Nova Launcher's settings and scroll near the bottom. Click on "Set Default Launcher". The normal Android prompt asks if you want to "Use Nova Launcher as Home". Tap "Always". It will appear as if the Nova Launcher Settings window is re-drawn. Back out of Nova's settings.
Now when you tap on the square recents button you'll see your recent application list in a manner which is similar to Android 9. Even though you told Android 10 to always use Nova Launcher, after each reboot you'll need to follow this process to get the three-button navigation to work in Nova Launcher the way it traditionally has. So this isn't really a fix but a circumvention for how Android 10 and third-party launcher software work together.

Thanks I'll try that. So far it seems to work. I used to just go into settings and pick there default home there. Fingers crossed!
The Clear all works with nova launcher when using 2 button navigation but not 3 button.
I sent an email to Nova about this and this is on Googles side according to them. They sent this back
Hello,
You can read Google's official statement and our statement about the issues you and anyone else using Android 10 is experiencing. Please take note that Google admits to this being broken on their end of things and that a fix will be coming in a future update to Android.
We understand that this statement was made 2 months during a beta of Android 10. However, as is stated in the below URL, this issue will remain broken even after Android 10 is released in its final form, which was September 3rd, 2019. What this means is that Google knew well ahead of time that they had no plans to fix this until much later so it's still a relative issue today.
Google's statement: https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2019/07/android-q-beta-5-update.html
Our statement: https://help.teslacoilapps.com/faq/gesture-navigation
What this means is that Nova, nor any other 3rd party launcher, can fix or change this in any way at this time. This issue is 100% on Google's end and Google is the only ones who can fix this issue. Their entire statement is below. Please note that the statement was from some time in July 2019, but it still pertains today and will continue to pertain until Google includes a fix for it in an upcoming release of Android 10.
PLEASE READ OUR SIGNATURE BELOW
If you didn't do so this time, please always use Nova Settings -> Contact Support to contact us as this provides us with a ton of useful information that can and will help us help you quicker and better. When doing so, please make sure the supportdetails.txt file remains attached to your email.
Answers to your questions are often found in the FAQ's so please read them prior to sending an email to possibly find your answer without having to wait for a response: https://help.teslacoilapps.com/faq You can also always access the FAQ's via Nova Settings -> FAQ's.
Yeah, looks like I'm stuck with the Pixel Launcher, which is not too bad really.
I knew Android 10 gestures don't work with 3rd party launcher, but now recents is buggy as well... Almost as if they tied the recents in with the launcher.
Don't want to sound like I'm ranting, but... My Huawei had these gestures since Android Pie (EMUI 9) and it worked properly from day one. Just saying...
I'll have to wait.

Android 10: three button navbar with alternate launcher, no recent apps

Hi there,
I use an alternate launcher (Nova Launcher). After the Upgrade to Windows 10, the recent navbar button (the one on the right) is not working any more. The running apps are not shown and I only see the background image. The same is true when using the Microsoft Launcher.
When I switch back to Xperia Home, the button is working well.
This looks like a bug to me. Is it working for anyone?
Best regards

Just use the stock home launcher because after android 10 update all previous launchers won't work, or at least will have bugs... wait until this launcher have support for android 10. that's it!
Microsoft Launcher
Yeah I tried Nova but it was too much like everything else. Yes I'll admit I was sceptical but I find this MS launcher fits my requirements and is really responsive and doesn't kill the battery. Give it a go.
I read from a few news sites stating that this "not compatible with third party launcher" problem is Google's fault. Even many Pixel phones still suffer from it. Basically you'll need to wait for December security patch and other launcher developers starting to update their launcher to support android 10 to be able to use third party launchers with 10's navigation gesture and recent app.
What I ended up doing is rooting and installing the Magisk QuickSwitch module. Then install OnePlus Launcher (apk is posted here on XDA) and set that as the recents provider in QuickSwitch.
At that point you can use any launcher (Lawnchair in my case) and disable Xperia Home via a debloater app (also available via Magisk).

[APP][6.0+]Launcher Ops

Original Post (6/29/2020)
So, Your in the market for a new launcher app replacement? GCA Launcher? Lawnchair? Nova Launcher? Action Launcher? Pear Launcher? So many choices? Maybe your that guy/gal who switches launchers for certain profiles or environments. A question remains as you make your choice, is their an easy way to switch to my favorite launcher and is there a way to manage them more easily than what the android os provides? Well, I may have an answer!
(Edited 5/25/2023)
(Looking back at the op above from 2020) That was the question almost 3 years ago. How can we take a core feature of android and manage it? We answered it. In 2023, new questions came to the confront us. What launcher apps are safe to use, what launcher apps are legit and not cloned? Do they have ads? Why does it need access to my storage? Why is it connecting to the internet? We explored those questions and came up with a solution this year.
In June of 2020, XDA Developers had this to say about No'Me, https://www.xda-developers.com/nome-launcher-manager-switch-multiple-launcher-apps/
My Vision for No'Me changed as well as the angle for my vision of this app. First off, the name needed a rebrand. Second, No'Me needed a rewrite... And I had a few tricks up my sleeve.
I'd like to introduce No'Me's biggest update in 2 years. Welcome Launcher Ops! Launcher Ops is a next generation Launcher App Manager and Analyzer. There are 2 main features Launcher Ops focuses on.
Firstly is management, allowing users to quickly switch to and from different launcher apps quickly using the Companion app, Launcher Quick Tile, and it's brand new launcher switcher interface! Launcher Ops now allows users to switch the default launcher app programically without needing access to the android settings. This works by tapping into a relatively new api called Role Manager. The Role Manager API is not available on all android os and could possibly be blocked on some heavily skinned firmware and if it isn't available, will fallback to our original method of switching Launcher Apps. Launcher Ops will also create App Shortcuts inside of its Launcher icon of any Launchers it's discovered to quickly launch them or allow the user to pin a shortcut to their homescreen.
Secondly, This is the main new feature of Launcher Ops existence today, Deepsight. Deepsight is a brand new feature developed to allow users to Analyze and Inspect their current homescreen app or one they plan to use. By using Deepsight on a launcher, Launcher Ops will identify the following...
-Any agressive or high risk permissions accessed
-If it has Ads
-If it uses Google services or has micro transactions
-Is the launcher up to date and use the latest android SDK?
-Does it have the correct permissions set to operate correctly
-Identify how many Permissions, background services and activities are running or accessible
-Identify if its a clone or related to launcher3 in any way
-View it's activity list to see what and where and how
-View to see if it will support quick switch from Magisk to see if it has access to overlay services
-Grade it's overall analyzes by checking all of the above as well as any sketchy pings like messy labels, excessive activities and services running in the background and dangerous permissions
As a side bonus, Launcher Ops will also compare all the launcher apps installed and identify which ones are using high risk permissions.
Another bonus to Launcher Ops? It's powered by OPEN ONE UI. A smooth and easy to understand user interface that mimics Samsungs ONE UI for all with some custom views in the mix.
With as much work I put into Launcher Ops this year, I did lock some things up to a License requirement.
*Requires a License
-Permission Querry Tab
-Discovery Tab
-Permission Details Tab in Deepsight
-Overlay Support Tab in Deepsight
-Grading Details and specifics of flags causing grades to decline or increase
I hope you all enjoy Launcher Ops and find a use for it to discover clones or launchers that need to be questioned.

Your welcome
Publishing a hotfix for an embarrassing bug where No'Me tries stating certain builds of Lawnchair is not supported by Quickswitch so that will be up soon.
Just published an update on Google Play and already live on Labs (probably last one for awhile unless i start getting feedback)
-Fixed a bug that would crash the app if backing out of a donation or selecting a new one
-Updated the logic for the launcher manager menu actions (Sometimes, wrong actions were available for system launchers)
-Updated modules and libraries
Screenshot demoing usage of Quick Switch module active
It doesn't allow me to switch to the OnePlus Launcher. I also have Lawnchair (default), Nova and AutoTools installed which work.

Nice find!
What I miss a lot when switching launchers is a way to import configuration from previous one. Is there a plan to implement this functionnality?
Thanks!

Most of the premium launchers should already offer an import feature (for compatible configurations) but some launchers may not be compatible with previous configurations and its a gray area. For example Nova launcher configurations are not compatible with my launcher (GCA) so users are offered an opportunity to start fresh.
Another blemish is apps cant access shared preferences from another app without root and i dont really wanna walk into that territory.
If a launcher stores something in its private directory or its res folder , i could essentially find it and list it but not all launchers work that way.
If anyone is encountering a force close as soon as the app opens, please let me know. Seems to be an issue for some users
End of the year patches have been published this week. These patches included the following changes
-Android 11 optimization (style changes and maintenance)
-Pre Android 10 maintenance (Android Shortcut Manager fixes, Style and general fixes)
-A fix to the Launcher list inflater (Progressbar would not show properly)
-A fix to launcher icon rendering (Context not properly initialized)
-A fix to the launcher list receiver (When putting the app in standby or exiting may cause crashes)
-Shortcut Manager not properly generating the shortcuts correctly
-A fix to the donations list
-Updated dependencies
-Updated Kotlin plugin
-General cleanup
Im not sure if the updated changes to Magisk affects how Quick Switch works and the compatibility with No'Me so if you run into not accurate info on the Quick Switch properties, let me know as I do not have an unlocked device anymore.
Thank-you for using No'Me!
wow, 7 Months... it's been awhile.
Some important news coming soon. No'Me is getting its android 12 ready update soon. In this update, The user interface will be polished up to fix some issues we discovered along the way and fix some things that just don't sit well. The app will be integrated with Monet library (Android 12 theme backport" so everyone can enjoy a really nice and up to date interface! The Manager tab will be cleaner and provide some extra info for users on their daily launcher. The settings tab will be alot more cleaner and allow detecting root and magisk alittle more in depth (this is used to determine if Quick Switch capabilites for the launcher is TRUE). They'll be a few new toggles to help manage switching easier. The manager tab will have a cleaner interface as well that's more up to snuff to standards of material design while playing a bigger part for newer features.
Along side the release, an open source variant will be released on my github to allow the community to possibly add onto the launcher manager to make it better or hold the key of adding the manager app to custom roms. I've held onto this app for to many years and it's time to move onto bigger things.
a preview of No'Me's material you update
A pre beta of the Material You update has been published on Google Play! A few bugs to work out but should be resolved in the next few days

Launchers and gestures problems

Pixel launcher has the annoying search bar on its home screen which is irremovable.
Nova launcher is arguably the best for customizability. But there's something that ticks me off when using Nova. Whenever you open recent apps the transition isn't smooth as with Pixel. It has a small hiccup.
(See https://imgur.com/a/lewvZu3 for what I mean)
I tried almost every launcher on the market and they all had the same problem.
So I contacted Nova's development team to give them my feedback. This is what they had to say:
"Hello,
PLEASE READ THIS RESPONSE IN FULL!
You can read Google's official statement and our statement about the issues you and anyone else using Android 10 and Android 11 are experiencing. Please take note that Google admits to this being broken on their end of things and that a fix will be coming in a future update to Android(Stated March 2019.).
However, it's now well over a year later and there are still many issues with full system gestures and 3rd party launchers on both Android and Android 11. These issues will remain for the foreseeable future as Google has no plans to completely fix their full system gestures.
This includes things such as the CLOSE ALL/CLEAR ALL button not showing up when you access the Recent Apps screen. As well as a delay of being able to tap on app icons when returning to the home screen from another app, from viewing the Recent Apps screen or anything similar.
These problems will still be there when Android 11 is released in its final form as Google has made it clear it's not going to fix/change things any time soon.
Please understand, there is absolutely NOTHING WE CAN DO TO FIX OR CHANGE THIS IN ANY WAY! Contact Google or your device OEM directly with these issues as contacting any launcher developer isn't the correct thing to do and isn't going to accomplish anything.
SAMSUNG USERS: Samsung has enabled full system gestures to be enabled within 3rd party launchers with their One UI 2.5 update. This means you can enable those gestures, but things are still very broken, especially when it comes to animations and how smooth the gestures work. This is NOT something Nova, or any other 3rd party launcher can fix. Only Google can fix it.
In the end, none of this is something we(Nova) can fix or change in any way and neither can any other 3rd party launcher for that matter. It is ultimately up to Google and only Google to fix full system gestures completely. Though they have made it clear that full system gestures will remain broken even with the final release of Android 11 and likely well beyond that.
We understand that this statement was made during a beta version of Android 10. However, as is stated in the below URL, this issue will remain broken even after Android 10, and now Android 11, is released in its final form. What this means is that Google knew well ahead of time that they had no plans to fix this until much later so it's still a relative issue today.
GOOGLE'S STATEMENT:
https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2019/07/android-q-beta-5-update.html
OUR STATEMENT:
https://help.teslacoilapps.com/faq/gesture-navigation
As of the December 2019 Security Patch from Google, you can now enable full system gestures within 3rd party launchers. However, please note, there are still a lot of issues with the gesture system such as animations not working, Close All button not showing up and several other things. This is not something any launcher developer, including us here at Nova, can fix or change in any way.
This is still all up to Google to fix at some point in the future and to get things working 100% the way everyone expects them to be.
If you experience any issues at all while using full system gestures, it is highly suggested that you contact Google directly and/or file bug reports with them directly so that your voice can be heard by them directly.
ACTION LAUNCHER'S FALSE CLAIMS: Action Launcher made an announcement back in late December 2019, is actually misleading and 100% incorrect. They are referring to the back swipe edit zones and similar stuff. Full system gestures are completely controlled by Android and not something a launcher can just suddenly add support for or change in any way.
If you actually try to use the full system gestures in Action Launcher, you'll see they are still as broken as they have been and will remain that way until Google fixes things themselves."
Edit: uploaded an animated gif of the example but XDA converted it to a still image, so I had to upload on imgur.
I'm using Nova as well. Have you also had an issue when swiping up and holding to access recent apps, the apps fill the entire screen instead of showing the smaller preview window?

Question New to the 12S Ultra had some questions

So I just received met 12S Ultra yesterday here in the USA. I ordered from Giztop.com They pre-installed google services so no issues there.. I have a T-Mobile sim in the phone and seems to be working.
Questions....
First I installed the "Google" app and it worked yet now it has disappeared on my screen and I can't search for it either though its shows installed on the PlayStore.. Any ideas and is it possible to have the Google news feed show up when I do a swipe right like you can in most phones. I am coming from IOS so bare with me.
Are there any good launchers that can mimic a stock android experience without having to root the phone etc... I want something simple.
I did order the Xiaomi 12S Ultra case and think its great add protection to the camera module.
Lastly does this phone have a screen protector that is installed already by the factory
thanks
It will run if you just select bootloader can be unlocked in dev settings. Install Nova launcher and select google integration.
It would not run without Nova ( china bans google) and Nova wouldnt run without the bootloader switch.
Thanks for your help. I did what you said yet after I installed Nova Launcher I cannot set the Default Home Screen to Nova Launcher. Gives me error message
Something about third parties mistune verified by MIUI..
Sugestions ?
As I said, switch the allow bootloader to be unlocked in dev section. You can then install. I'm sure that's all I did but while in the menus, ensure security settings are allowing 3rd party apps etc.. my dev settings attached.
Thanks I will double check
Also how can I change the play store to the default when I try to select google integration in Nova it takes me to the Xiaomi store
Lastly is there anyway to keep gestures when using a third party launcher right now it says gestures are not supported using third party launcher’s
You need to select Nova as the launcher from within Nova Settings, not the phone settings.

I successfully installed the Google Integration app.
In regards to "System navigation" is there anyway for Nova to use Gestures at this point. Right now it will not let me switch to Gestures...
Finally if and when Xiaomi does release a "International" version of the 12S Ultra will it possible to install that ROM instead of the Chinese version?
Not sure about the gestures but yes, you can change ROM, if they do and they say that they not currently due to shortages.
The Xiaomi EU group will be adding Thor (12s Ultra ) to their released ROM collection. Pop over to their forum for more info when they release their version. You will need to unlock your bootloader (168 hour wait between starting and actually unlocking the bootloader) and flash the ROM using fastboot (and format) if there is no TWRP when they do.
Once flashed, it will behave as if the bootloader is locked, so everything works. They release a stable and a weekly (or beta) version of nearly all supportable Xiaomi phones. You will need to decide which version you want as you cannot change without a further format (due to partition differences between them).
It is based on the Chinese releases but fully useable by all. More info about what their ROMs contain can be found on their ROM release. Hope it helps, I'm not try to teach you to suck eggs but I don't know your level of knowledge.
@Sathelp thanks for all your help.
Hmm what I really need is Android Auto to work though I am not sure this will ever happen.
I know just enough to be dangerous I guess.

The 11ultra has now a version of stock android. It is in its infancy but as 11ultra had a global release there was more chance that someone would develop one, where the 10 didn't and 12ultra doesn't look like a global release.
Users do have Xiaomi EU working with android auto and this because of the full implementation of the Google framework so there is hope yet for you. Just keep browsing the Xiaomi EU group forums as well as here.
