Correct me if I am wrong, but the single sim U11 unlocked phone will work on any gsm network correct? I need to replace mine and I'm seeing phones on eBay that say they are unlocked but will only work on AT&T and T-Mobile but will not work on Verizon which is what I have. This doesn't make sense to me because I have used my phone with Verizon and T-Mobile. I know the U11 never had CDMA support and I thought the US released phones were all the same.

The U11 has some issues with Verizon and getting VoLTE enabled I believe. Other than that and missing some bands, should be ok on Verizon

OK, was there a Verizon specific model? I honestly don't remember if there was when I bought it but I know I plugged my Verizon sim in and it worked and at one point I briefly used T-Mobile and it worked with that as well.
There is not a Verizon version so the unlocked US version is probably what you got. As long as you order that, it will be the same phone

If you look at the thread you referred to, no one actually says that they got the phone and it was unlocked. Two people say it is unlocked, but don't state how they know.
Also, I asked about Sprint, that thread is Best Buy.
It comes unlocked. I popped a T-Mobile SIM in and was good to go

As have I. I started a thread before my Nexus from sprint was delivered. Then after I got it I tried a att straight talk sim and it worked without issue

Amazing, that is a first!
I have scoured the net but find conflicting answers. Is the Tmobile version of the Nexus 5 locked down to T Mobile? I know the Play Store version is unlocked (as with all Nexus devices obviously), but what about the carrier versions?
As far as I know they should be unlocked.

first of, questions go into the q&a section, not general http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477886
2nd, you must not have searched too hard, lol.
3rd, its the exact same phone(16gb) that you buy at the play store or tmobile. all they do is sell it, they do not add any software or bloatware to it.
they are all carrier unlocked. you can buy it at tmobile and use it on att if you want.
The T-Mobile rep told me it's locked to T-Mobile I found out later it's not lol

I bought mine from Sprint, and it is unlocked. Also, since the N5 is cool like that, it even works 100% with AT&T and T-mobile (which I use now, same phone)

Thank you both. This is exactly what I was hoping. I was curious about the Sprint version as I currently have them, but don't want to be tied to them because they suck and plan on switching to Tmobile or AT&T but don't want to buy a phone if I don't have to.

Hey all,
I'm looking to import a M8 and I was wondering if the Verizon version is unlocked. I know Verizon list it as a global phone so I would like to know if I would be able to use it in my country. My local carrier supports the 700 LTE band. I'm also wondering if the device is indeed unlocked if I would be able to use LTE with my local carrier. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This. It is Sim unlocked, there's a thread somewhere about people trying it out on various carriers.. But you're better off just buying an unlocked model, as there seems to have been some inconsistencies with the Verizon model and GSM.

Hey guys.. i ordered my sprint s8+ and it will be here the 21st. I'm thinking about buying one with an unlocked bootloader and sending this one back. It has to work with sprint cdma. Anyone know where i can get one or what model that would be ?
Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk
No chance any international phone will ever be whitelisted by sprint. You have the hardest carrier to use unlocked GSM phones with. Sprint is CDMA and has a system of adding only the phones it will allow into its network

So the only way to get a unlocked boot loader is to pay full price for a international phone.

^ This. This is also why most of the phone reviewers, in the US anyway, have either AT&T or T-Mobile, as they're both use GSM. All unlocked phones sold in the international market are GSM, so you can basically plop in your SIM and you're good to go.
Verizon and Sprint are much trickier as they both use CDMA, which unless I'm mistaken, it's only in the US market. And with their whitelist system, even if you have the correct bands for their networks, it still might not work.
Lol that sucks being that I'm with Verizon. Ah well no root and roms. As long as it works great factory I guess I'll be okay.

Yes and it won't work on Sprint or Verizon.
There are 5 different versions of this device on HTC's site:
64GB: AT&T, T-Mobile & VZW
Unlocked: 64GB & 128GB
I plan on using it solely on Verizon, but I also plan on unlocking the bootloader and rooting it. Is there any reason I should buy the VZW-specific version instead of the unlocked one? Are they all the same? How dumb is this question?

It's not a dumb question. I haven't been in the HTC game for some time, but if the different carrier softwares are anything like Samsung with the S9. The Verizon one will have VOLTE, while if you use the unlocked model on Verizon you may not have VOLTE, WiFi calling etc.

There are no carrier variants with the U12+. The unlocked model will work on all carriers except Sprint and they only sell the unlocked version.

I think they're still unlocked versions even though they are separated. I agree though it's confusing and not best way to do it.
They are all the same phones. They are just trying to save time for those who want to make sure their phone is specific provider-certified ie VoLTE/Wi-fi Calling works - with these variants listed there's no need for explanation.

Unfortunately, it will not. I've chatted with them on their website twice to make sure, and they told me both Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE will not work on AT&T no matter if you choose the one marked AT&T on their website or unlocked. They also told me it's all the same phone. I think they did it that way, so people who usually don't buy phones outside of the carrier store will feel better about it.

You: If the U12+ isn't being sold by the US carriers, why do you list 3 different models for the 3 carriers? is there any difference between those and the unlocked version?
Nathalie C.: No problem. To answer your question, the phone only comes with the unlocked version. The list of carriers that you see over it's only so people can know which ones are the main carriers the phone supports.
You: Ok thanks. So when you select one of the 4 models, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Unlocked... It's all the same phone?
Nathalie C.: Yes. That is correct! If you choose any of those, you'll select either way the unlocked version.
You: What about using carrier specific features like VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling? Will the unlocked be able to do that or just the AT&T version?
Santiago G.: The U12+ sadly does not support wi-fi calling trough AT&T's network, same goes for VoLTE.
---
^^ that's a shame. Would have been nice if it did. Thanks for clearing that up ??
So, is this going to be similar to the process with the HTC 10? All variants were the same phone, just different firmware and software per carrier.
I'm also getting the unlocked version as I did with the HTC 10 and wanting to use it on Verizon.
Does anyone know if it is as simple as putting in your SIM and activating the unlocked U12+ and it works, or will we have to RUU to Verizon's software for the U12+ and proceed that was as we did with the HTC 10?

No... From my understanding, it's all the same unlocked phone, so no matter what carrier you have, the phone will work with whatever SIM card you put in it.

I understand that much, but our HTC 10 phones were all the same as well...hardware wise. But you HAD to flash the carrier software inorder to get the phone activated AND all the features offered by said carrier. That included the advanced calling features. VoLTE ViLTE and WiFi Calling for Verizon.
I guess it's just the waiting game until we start getting the U12+ in the US and everyone starts trying to activate them on Verizon (unlocked variant in particular)

Exactly only the Sprint Variant for the HTC11 was different. I just switched to T-Mobile and only had to flash the Unlocked firmware and insert new SIM. I have VoLTE and WiFi calling. Im pretty sure the same will be for the U12+. Except it will already be US Unlocked, new SIM and it will be ready to go.

the HTC 10 had a Verizon specific ROM, the U11 & U12+ do not. The U12+ only has a Unlocked model with only 1 ROM (x.xx.617.x), wifi calling wont work on Verizon. Like others stated, it doesn't matter which button you click on when ordering, you get the Unlocked model. They only do that so people know their carrier is supported.
