Looking for s8 plus with unlocked bootloader. - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hey guys.. i ordered my sprint s8+ and it will be here the 21st. I'm thinking about buying one with an unlocked bootloader and sending this one back. It has to work with sprint cdma. Anyone know where i can get one or what model that would be ?
Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk

No chance any international phone will ever be whitelisted by sprint. You have the hardest carrier to use unlocked GSM phones with. Sprint is CDMA and has a system of adding only the phones it will allow into its network

You'll have to leave Sprint for any chance of that.

So the only way to get a unlocked boot loader is to pay full price for a international phone.

^ This. This is also why most of the phone reviewers, in the US anyway, have either AT&T or T-Mobile, as they're both use GSM. All unlocked phones sold in the international market are GSM, so you can basically plop in your SIM and you're good to go.
Verizon and Sprint are much trickier as they both use CDMA, which unless I'm mistaken, it's only in the US market. And with their whitelist system, even if you have the correct bands for their networks, it still might not work.

Lol that sucks being that I'm with Verizon. Ah well no root and roms. As long as it works great factory I guess I'll be okay.

I love mine even though it's sprint model. So much nicer then that nightmare iPhone I had. Lol

Maybe an answer to the locked bootloader...

I personally feel that AT&T locked the bootloader and will probably release a secure kernel in the near future to try and get a few lucrative government contacts. I'm not sure if you've all read that Samsung finally has the first Android phone that has passed the security tests by the Pentagon clearing select models for government and military use when it is knox enabled. Currently only one model is approved, the s4. So that being said I dont see them ever unlocking it.

Locks were meant to be picked and that's all I have to say about that.

Does the t-mob one have lte? If not then it's different hardware.
Why anyone would think AT&T is going to unlock the bootloader anyway? You think it's done by accident and they're going wake up one day and realize it, push an update, and the world will be a happy grand place once again?
It's locked and will stay locked until the hack is released to the public. Anybody looking for AT&T to unlock it, please say hi to the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and Santa for me. OK.

I bet when unlocked, roms will be interchangeable.

The T-mobile version supports basically every GSM radio plus AT&T and T-mobile LTE bands. ROMs will be interchangable as is the case with every Samsung phone with the same hardware on both carriers..Skyrocket/GS2, GS3, Note 2...
So what is the purpose of this discussion? Get a TMobile Phone, get it unlocked and then use your ATT Sim? This has been discussed in numerous threads already. It is an option but you will pay more, buying the phone outright, and getting it unlocked.

I really don't think the US government is going to buy Canadien versions of a phone. And the OP may be on to something. There are currently Android phones in use by the US government. Verizon models...with locked bootloaders. This could be a move by AT&T to secure a very large government contract.

Hmmm, is there any difference between LTE Dual band and LTE? Sounds like I might get the T-Mobile version then. I could always craigslist the AT&T version.
AT&T: LTE: Bands 1/4/7/17; HSPA+/UMTS: 850/1900/2100MHz; GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz
T-Mobile: LTE: Bands 1/2/4/5/7/17; HSPA+/UMTS: 850/AWS/1900/2100MHz; GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz

Jesus with the exception of a few adults who understand what I was inferring, you can all piss off. It was my theory and one of the messages I got confirmed it. So, buy your unlocked export or a tmo phone but the next "update" if they really do want to break into the government market will release the secure kernel with SELinux not in permissive mode but enforced. I wasn't whining, I don't care. This phone will be my daily driver. I can use my note2, xperia z, htc hox+, nexus 4 or Galaxy nexus if I want to play. Was just an insight. As far as rally against AT&T.... Good luck.... 20000 govt and state contacts or 500 whining kids... time to find a new carrier for you. Verizon has been doing this for years.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
i do not think this is the right reason of lock bootloader,
almost all carrier provide the contract phone with low price. but people always bought it and flash the rom or root it to remove the service or application of carrier in the phone, (althoug most them will be useless for us),so they demand manufacturer to lock it.

[Q] Galaxy S5 Sprint unlock for international GSM?

Hello. I am considering buying an S5 with a BAD ESN to use it internationally with a GSM network. I know a workaround exists for the S4 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415587 ), but did anyone try to do something similar with the S5?
Thank you.
waiting for the same.
Did you try it, out of USA?
Waiting for the same
unlocking
i am also looking for that. i have 2 pcs of sprint galaxy s5 in italy
I'm getting a great deal on eBay for a Galaxy S5 on Sprint. It has a clean ESN, I checked it, however I dont know if the phone is unlocked. Will I be able to pop in an Indian GSM sim card into the phone and use it without any restriction?

galaxy s5 sprint unlock
I have been a sprint customer for 7 years, but i don't think that matters. I got my galaxy s4 internationally unlocked by sprint last year 2013 on December. I just upgraded to the galaxy s5 on April 11, now im traveling outside the US and i called sprint and asked them to unlock it. They denied my request, so i called again and asked if i could change my phone to a different line to unlock it, since the other line has never been unlocked. "BTW you can only do it once year on a line" so they said yes. So i was thrilled so when i called them back they said not to worry that i didn't need to switch my number over. So they unlocked my galaxy s5 it just needed to get approved and i had to wait 24 hours. Not a big deal. Just call them again and ***** at them and say you need the phone unlocked that you need to use your phone. They will eventually override it. I had 2 submit 2 different cases but it was worth it. good luck

Network Unlock T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8+ SM-G955U ?

I'm seeking the best and a official way to Network/Service unlock my (T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8+ SM-G955U) ??? I know it's a new device and I've already used up my 2 request for the year, so calling T-Mobile to Request the Unlock isn't gonna happen for those two reasons alone..
I'm inquiring about any other real working methods?
I got my S8+ from Samsung (T-Mo version) and when I opened the T-Mo unlock app, it said it was already permanently unlocked. I was really surprised.

Odd, my wife got hers from Samsung as well (she got an S8) and it is locked as well. When I look at the unlock history, it shows the unlock history of my old V20. Is it possible my phone isn't unlocked and it still sees my unlocked V20? I used a new sim card that came with the S8+.
Are they all unlocked maybe? 955U?

I had to call TMO and request an unlock for the Device Unlock app. I got the approval within 10 min. Now I have a fully unlocked Samsung S8+
There's plenty of unlocking services online, u just have to pay the price, but if your phone is truly a g955u it should be unlocked already, do you have tmo bloat on your phone? Most likey you bought a tmo phone on the Samsung site vs buying the g955u model which comes unlocked
Called Samsung and they said to call t-mobile. Oh well, this is going to be fun.

If unlocking is that important for you without paying, maybe you should return for now and wait until they sell the real "unlocked" model or better yet buy the f model! If I had tmo I wouldve in a heart beat but not so compatible with att volte
Well, we all see how they treated the S7 edge US unlocked version. It still hasn't got Nougat yet.
The international F version doesn't have wifi calling for t-mobile. Wifi calling is great feature to have foe international traveller. Also, warranty will be an issue as well.

Does the unlocked version support Sprint?

If you get the unlocked version from HTC's website, does it support Sprint, or will they have different radios? I tweeted HTC and they said that the unlocked version will NOT support Sprint.... But if you look on there website at the radios then I don't see an issue, they are the same as the unlocked version.
Here is a link to the website for the radios.
http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-u11/buy/#!color=black
And the unlocked radios:
http://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-u11-unlocked/
I also asked if I were to get the Sprint version would that support all other carriers (ie. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon), I did not get a response from HTC.
I will say this would be absolutely ridiculous if the Sprint version is dumb down and doesn't support the rest of the world. I honestly would think about switching if this were the case. I just want to be on a GSM carrier that I don't have to worry about "if my phone will work" on this network. Annoying.
BTW I say this because I travel a lot, so having 1 phone that works everywhere would be the best thing in the world.

out of the box, the Unlocked ROM would not support Sprint, but the hardware is the same between the unlocked & sprint, so technically you could flash the Sprint ROM on the unlocked model. The problem is the unlocked IMEI would not be whitelisted. As far as the Sprint model supporting the GSM carriers...yes it would, provided the sim was unlocked...or you could flash the unlocked ROM.

OMFG THANK YOU! This makes way more sense now. I have been all over the Internet looking for an answer. Well at least I know the actual hardware is the same.
I feel like having to deal with hoping that Sprint will support the unlocked devices IMEI wpuld be worse then buying the Sprint flavor.
So I have 2 easy options then.
1. Buy it from Sprint at full price and do not extend my contact. Then have them unlock it which they can't say no to if I have no obligation to them.
2. Buy it from HTC but in the Sprint version. But I have to figure out if it is unlocked. I think it is. It looks like it is on there website.
Man I hate how buying phones and carrier plans work in the US. I wish we would go to an overseas model, and almost every phone is unlocked. Then you just decided what service you want yourself. So easy to just walk in a store and get service with whatever phone you want.

Ah that is very handy, I might look into doing that. Thank You.
However, I do think I am going to purchase the phone at full price anyway as that is what I was planning on doing, but this is good to know. At least the hardware is the same and I wont be locked down by Sprint. I should just buy it direct from HTC I think.

Yeah, it is cheaper to buy from HTC at full price especially with the $50 off code.. Plus you could make interest free payments via PayPal credit if you wanted to

Ya I was thinking the same thing. But its weird on HTC's website if you select the Sprint version it doesn't have the color black. But if you go to sprint they do..... facepalm.
Also I spoke with Sprint yesterday to see if they would tell me if the unlocked one works, and they refused to even check. They wanted the MEID of the device, which I don't have, and I told them I don't have it until I buy the phone online and have it shipped to me. So this is annoying.
Also I just ran across this article on Android Central that the Verizon version dose not have CDMA radios. Now that makes me wonder about the Sprint version.

I swear this is a headache. Just go to Sprint and buy the dang thing, then either unlock it myself or have them do it. Just have to suck up the extra $50.

Ya I guess you are right on that. I don't even want the things, I suppose I could just sell them. But I know myself and i am bad a selling electronics even if I don't want them.
Oh and went to Sprint's website today and I could not even click on the HTC U 11. I hope they didn't stop pre-orders. Or I could just till the device comes out I suppose.
If I buy the Sprint version from HTC. Can I still have Sprint unlock it?

last time I checked the device had to be active for 3 months before they would unlock, but not sure if anything has changed....but like I said earlier, it's not difficult to unlock yourself

Edit: Cancelled my pre-order and confirmed with 2 people on the support staff that they will not be shipping until mid-month.

Hey guys. Kinda bad news. HTC (Germany) just told me after telling me this morning my unit will ship today that it will ship on the 8th of June.
I asked why they didn’t contact me and sent me an email telling me it is delayed. They just told I am expected to contact them in order to know my shipping date. A bit ridiculous.
I sincerely hope they don’t have hardware issues.
Well if it’s the same as with my pixel xl then we all have to wait because HTC cant keep its production up with the demand.

For anyone buying the Essential Phone outright to use on Sprint, beware.

Do NOT activate the phone directly after getting it from Best Buy/ Essential, as it'll lock your device to Sprint. They won't be able to unlock it in Sprint, or by using Sprint tech support either. I went to a Sprint store, and was told they cannot unlock in-store. I was then told to contact their support number, and was transferred 8 times to the highest level of tech support, which ended in them telling me there was absolutely no way to unlock it. So, I was forced to take it back to Best Buy, and have to wait till Wednesday for it to arrive. Apparently Sprint sims will lock to your phone if it's taken to them directly and activated, so I'd suggest putting in a VZW sim and then activating the phone on Sprint. Don't make the same mistake I made.

FreedomPop uses Sprint network. So, before saying not true, it'd be better for someone who tried other network other than Sprint network including MVNO to confirm.

Lol you want screenshots of Sprint causing my phone to become locked? I can throw up pictures of my receipts of buying a UNLOCKED Essential phone, and then it becoming magically locked when my Sprint sim was inserted in it. It also rejected AT&T AND T-Mobile sims. Why would I fabricate a story of my phone becoming locked? The Sprint store reps told me this is something that happens a lot, along with Best buy employees telling me they had this happen before. Only reason I posted this was to make sure this happened to no one else. The only way this just happened to just me is if Essential accidentally shipped a locked Sprint phone out that was packaged like an unlocked phone, and I was just unfortunate enough to receive it. Or maybe I just imagined spending an hour and a half speaking to Sprint reps trying to unlock my phone and the about phone section and activation status on my phone are just bogus.....
Some more details that might be useful for buyers:
1. In store pickup seems to make the phone lock to Sprint, even if the first time you turn it on its with a different SIM inside.
2. People have reported Essential phone being unlocked if you choose delivery instead and use another SIM on first turn on of the device.
What kind of analogy is this.. putting VZW sim then activate to Sprint.
Picked-up mine and its unlock. No mumbo jumbo
To be clear, OP is saying (I think) if you first turn on phone with sprint sim and activate it, it will lock to Sprints SIM.
If you first activate it with a different sim, you will have no problems with any sim, including sprint.
Has anyone bought an unlocked phone and first activated it with a Sprint Sim?
My question is.. Why would you buy the Sprint variant outright? Why not buy the unlocked modem from best buy, amazon or essential? Its cheaper too.. Then put your sprint sim.

I didn't. I bought an unlocked one from Best buy and took it directly to Sprint to get it activated. When they did, it carrier locked my device, and I was only receiving Sprint updates... Either Essential shipped me a locked Sprint phone, or Sprint locked it when I activated my phone that I owned, which is illegal.
It's easy to see what variant in Fastboot. It will show Variant - Sprint if it is flashed with Sprint software. Are you sure Best Buy didn't just accidentally grab a Sprint model by accident?
When you get your new one power up by holding down Volume Down to get to Fastboot and check the Variant tag.

Isn't the bootloader unlocked so you can just flash a new rom? Did the Sprint SIM lock the bootloader?

I can flash LOS but I still remain carrier locked. In fastboot it shows I am using the Open-US variant, but my device is locked to Sprint. So frustrated right now.
What if the variant just says Sprint?

I bought unlocked at Best Buy. Variant is Open US in bootloader. I don't use on sprint, so I wouldn't know if it locks. Best buy does sell unlocked.
in Fastboot mode check the variant and it should say "OPENUS"

Then why does it say I have the OPENUS version in the bootloader, and why does my receipt say I paid for an unlocked essential phone? Before making allegations, inform yourself.
